My collection 006:
My feather collection!
I could be considered a sort of a bird enthusiast. So naturally I collect pretty bird feathers I find on the ground. Here's what I have so far:
Heres mischellaneous feathers that wouldn't fit in the album, a lot of them are from Canada geese and pidgeons, there is few from pheasant birds, maybe some from ravens or crows and there is one thats from an owl (my sibling found a dead owl in the field and took a feather from it and gave it to me):
Tumblr media
Here's few swan feathers, I will probably insert a darker paper behind them so they can be seen better:

Pheasant bird feather:

I think these are also from pheasant but I'm not shure:

Probably a magpie feather! As you can guess, my faveourite in the collection. I think it's a magpie feather because it has an iredecsent hue along the upper half of it:

Some mischellaneous feathers, mostly from pidgeons:

Aand last, but not least, raven feathers:

I think I have crow feathers somewhere too.
I have more pics, so maybe I make a part 2 of my feather collection.
(disclaimer: yes, these have already been off of the bird when I found them, or the bird was already dead, I did not pull feathers off of live birds).

Wishing every non-human collector who sees this luck in finding bones, feathers (ones that are allowed to be collected), and shiny rocks and crystals :]

So, the laws regarding the collection of feathers were put into place for a reason. When bird feathers were used in fashion, hunters would kill endangered birds for their feathers. Now, it's nearly impossible to tell whether a feather is one that was naturally molted or one that was taken from a poached bird. To combat poaching further, the law was made intentionally very broad (more info on the law here and here).
Of course, it is very difficult for the game commission to crack down on every single case of hobbyist feather collecting, which is very common. It is possible to stay within the bounds of the law while collecting feathers (see links above), but so long as you aren't actively exploiting the birds or selling the feathers you've collected, you're fine. Just don't let anyone who works for the game commission or fish and boat know that you collect feathers that may be illegal
AITA for collecting bird feathers even though it's illegal?
basically, i've been obsessed with birds and their feathers since i was 4 years old. that's when i started collecting feathers that I found in the wild. i did it for a very long time, but recently, i found out that collecting bird feathers is illegal. at first, i thought the law was just about not killing birds just to collect their feathers, but then i found out the law covered just collecting random feathers you find in the wild, too.
and... that made me pissed. i still think the law applying to just harmlessly collecting bird feathers that you find on the ground is stupid, so i still do it. it's not like i don't respect birds. i would never ever hurt a bird for feathers, and i would never take feathers off a dead bird because that feels extremely wrong and disrespectful to the bird. i just have a deep fascination with birds and the beauty of feathers.
but part of me feels really bad for continuing to do it. i know laws that exist for animal protection are good, so maybe i really am in the wrong for knowingly violating it, even though i'm 100% against killing birds just because you want to have their feathers? i know this isn't the typical sort of thing submitted on ur blog, sorry if it doesn't really fit the theme but... is it wrong for me to keep collecting feathers off the ground even though i know it's illegal? am i an "asshole" for it?
What are these acronyms?

What's most amazing about people who hate that birds are dinosaurs is that, without the discovery of birds being dinosaurs in the 1960s, none of y'all would have ever actually cared about dinosaurs
the history:
dino craze in 1800s. people thought, birds are very similar to these guys. Dollo fucked it up, made a bad theory, and people stopped thinking that
Early 1900s, dinosaurs deemed sluggish, stupid, pointless evolutionary failures. most people not really into dinosaurs anymore. this continues until
1960s: Deinonychus discovered. suddenly, dinosaurs interesting again: vibrant, lively, warm blooded animals. Also... birds might be dinosaurs?
from the 60s through the 70s, a slow buildup of dinosaur culture - both in crappy stop motion movies, but also in children's books and other media
80s cladistics revolution shows birds are living dinosaurs, though not without flaws. documentary after documentary is made, causing the major dinosaur boom of the late 80s and early 90s
the peak of this boom are the A&E and PBS documentaries, which both outright state birds are dinosaurs
cartoons like land before time and other dinosaur content keep coming out too, especially at the end of the 80s and the earliest 90s
the book jurassic park, referencing the birds are dinosaurs thing, is written in the late 80s. in the early 90s, is adapted into one of the greatest blockbusters of all time. now dinosaur interest is MAINSTREAM.
jurassic park isn't the start of the dinosaur boom, it is the apex
90s becomes the decade of dinosaurs, with tons of new discoveries, television shows, documentaries, and other programming
1996 first feathered "nonavian" dinosaur discovered. birds are dinosaurs is the closest thing we have to proven phylogenetic fact
1999 walking with dinosaurs premieres, revolutionizing the dinosaur-documentary genre.
early 2000s becomes the age of Period-Type Dino-Docu-Dramas
velociraptor is determined to have feathers
suddenly, dinosaur mania starts to die in the later 2000s
even though discoveries keep happening and we learn so much in the 2010s, the 2010s becomes a very regressive time - a sort of reactionary response to the birdification of dinosaurs and the dinosaurification of birds. the height of this is jurassic world
we may be in the middle of a dino-docu-drama revitilization thanks to prehistoric planet. stay tuned on that one
like, everyone was fine with the birdification of dinosaurs up and until they looked "feminine" on the outside, because of feathers.
It's just all such transparent misogyny and homophobia and people who react against feathered dinosaurs or birds being dinosaurs are just... so transparently parroting conservative talking points
Anyways, yeah. without birds are dinosaurs, you wouldn't have jurassic park. Sooooo

Copying this from a friend on discord
Bird safety alert for NORTH AMERICA:
Coming from a feather collector; please avoid picking up any bird feathers you find on the ground until the bird flu thing is over. Its typically a very safe hobby, but flare ups of bird flu mean no picking up feathers.
If you absolutely MUST have that sweet-ass belted kingfisher retrice, wear gloves when retrieving it, and clean in warm soapy water ASAP. Bird feathers are naturally hydrophobic, so be sure to take your time and clean in between the barbs on the underside.
But seriously, the bird flu isn't just limited to chickens. Wild birds are the primary vector.
Please add if there's something missed

"Hello there," Poseidon drawls with a lazy grin, watching Odysseus weave through the water.
"Hey," Odysseus 'breathes', slowly winding himself around the god's neck. He stretches above Poseidon's trapezius and leans into the finger Poseidon moves to scratch at his head.
Poseidon slowly moves his finger from Odysseus' head to behind his ear, smiling as his little monster leans in, fins rippling and something rumbling in his body akin to a purr. "So," The god scritches harder to see Odysseus lean in more, face scrunching with an open smile and hands comfortably held limp in front of his chest. "What are you doing here?"
Odysseus hums, distracted; Poseidon slows down letting his little monster think, laughing when Odysseus whines at the stop.
Odysseus stretches again with a low groan; " Everyone iss bus- hm, occupied," he mumbles, lazily waving his hand; he's gotten in the habit of avoid words with an 's' sound, due to his snake tongue like this. He settles down onto Poseidon's trapezius, cushioning his head with his arms.
Poseidon pets the top of Odysseus' head. "Hm. And I'm your last option?" He teases.
"You're the one all the way under the ocean," his little monster murmurs, nuzzling into the god.
And yet you still came here. Poseidon sighs, fond. He runs his fingers from Odysseus head to his back before going back to his paper work. "I should be done in a bit."
