After Tumblr's backend migration to Wordpress, will the entire content of all half of billion blogs will be deleted??

Answer: Hi, @garotaviciada!

It’s important to note here that this is just the engine running the site, and there will be no changes to the front-end. So no—we’re not deleting content. All of Tumblr’s blogs, and the content on them, will continue to be served, both at the blog address and in the apps. There will just be different tech running under the hood.

Perhaps the simplest way to say so is that, besides a bug or two here or there, how you know and use Tumblr will not change at all. We hope this helps clarify things.

I bet the reason the nested replies UI is so ugly is they're saving space to add reactions too. That's my conspiracy theory for today. 🧐 I'm onto u tumblr... I see the future......

WAIT actually no what if they added up/downvotes for replies instead. Introducing a ratio effect to a previously ratio-free site. The replies are traditionally the underfunded petting zoo of tumblr after all. Lotta laugh potential there.

Of those two options, I think reactions are slightly more likely because upvotes/downvotes seem kind of antithetical to how engagement works on this site? But who knows, tumblr does what tumblr does lol

Honestly, though, I'd wager the devs just aren't particularly good at UI work and/or simply don't have the *time* to do UI work (since staff is so tiny these days). The spacing on the new reply panel looks to me like they plopped in the reply button icon, and then maybe spent a total of 5 seconds trying to adjust the padding in the CSS code before giving up lmao. Given this site's propensity for spaghetti code, it's also possible they *tried* to fix it, and had a contradictory style somewhere they couldn't find slfjddsl.

Basically, the layout has a lot of spacing that looks more to me like unnecessary padding rather than space for additional elements. Personally, though, I think tumblr should add exactly one (1) react button, and it should just be the tumbeasts from days of old

About a year ago, WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg mentioned that Tumblr would support the Fediverse, but there haven’t been any updates on this since then.

While the Fediverse is an interesting idea, I believe Tumblr should consider supporting AT Protocol instead. With Bluesky being the fastest-growing social media platform and the only one currently using AT Protocol, implementing this on Tumblr would not only provide strong competition but also make it easier for users to move between platforms.

This could help prevent monopolies and promote decentralized social networking. Are there any plans for Tumblr to adopt AT Protocol, or could this be considered in the future?

Good news! While it is still on the list, the Tumblr to WordPress migration will definitely unlock ActivityPub for Tumblr! In fact, one big reason for the migration itself is to get us into the Fediverse. When that’s done, we’re in.

The migration is still a work in progress, as we’ve previously detailed here, but we can say for sure that it will include support for WordPress’s existing ActivityPub plugins. We hope this comes as good news.

Joined Substack recently, and they recommend the same thing, but the difference is that substack is full of writers claiming they want to be friends and look at other people's work and form genuine connectoons and a community of other writers, but really what they want to do is say "that sounds really interesting! I'll have to check it out" and then grit their teeth because the person replying to them didn't instantly subscribe to them and become a fan but rather was trying to make conversation (or let's be honest, promote their own work). Substack wants fans, not equals. It wants commenters and engagement, but not people you would talk to, which is how you make engagement happen.

I guess the difference is that Tumblr seems to be a conversation between friends rather than an entertainer looking for an audience. That's what I think makes Tumblr work in ways the others don't.

I keep meeting artists who complain that Tumblr Is Dead then when I check their blog they've made four posts in six months and all of them were self promo lmao. Influencers whining that "tumblr is useless for engagement" tells me every part of the problem, like sorry you can't just show up and farm this userbase for clicks by waving buzzwords around the way you can on tiktok.
