“Who?” Blake looks to the front where the hostess stand is occupied by the closer, tidying up and locking the front door. “Oh no, that poor thing is always so jumpy. I’ve had to fight some battles against some wiley customers up there.”

Get between people and their food, anything can happen. Blake has learned that very quickly after getting into the serving industry. She doesn’t have much to complain about despite that. It’s fun, she gets to socialize, and most people are friendly.

“I look forward to it, lovebug. I love visitors when I’m working.” She loved having a visitor to help her tidy up her work too. She is finding that out very quickly as Felix begins to run through the silverware quick enough she’s already behind by four roll-ups. “Woah! You’re going to make me look bad! Slow down!”

Felix wouldn’t. Not when that determined, competitive streak came out. Blake had faced it too many times in her teenage years. Every academic award she went for, any achievements or clubs she wanted to head, nearly every accomplishment she aimed to strive for, Felix had been there. Her biggest obstacle, and through that, he’d been her biggest rival.

In many ways, he inspired her to challenge herself, but then she definitely hated him.

It’s funny now how all that had become water under the bridge, and she’s sitting here in the Sea Shanty Shack, laughing in a silverware roll-up race. One she's so clearly lost.

"Alright, rockstar. Considering a job as a waiter? I feel like you and I could run this place." Blake grabs the bin to stack their roll-ups in so they can finish up. "But then you'd get all the high tippers, so maybe not. I got bills to pay."

"I wouldn't have blamed you if had yelled," Felix reassured with a chuckle. "I think I also gave your co-worker over there at heart attack when I came in. I'll be back during work hours another day though. I want the whole 'Blake Michaels: waitress' experience."

His smile softened and became impossible fonder when she kissed his forehead, which he gladly tilted his head down to lean into for a second. He'd missed this kind of easy affection; part of why he'd needed a break from work was that he moved so often that he found it hard to make connections that were actually worth cultivating. But Blake had already been in his life for so long — for what felt like multiple different ones sometimes — that she was stuck with him. That constancy, even when they were mostly long distance friends for so long, sustained him.

"Breakfast for dinner it is," he said, nodding decisively. He directed his attention to the cutlery quickly focusing on how to optimize this whole process she was showing him. He followed her instructions and placed his first roll to the side with the rest, then quickly grabbed another one of each and looked at her challengingly. It'd taken them so long to become friends because Felix was a competitive moron — clearly, some things never died. "Race you."

He barely gave her time to reply before he was rolling, grabbing, rolling, counting up to fifteen in his head every time he set one aside.

It wasn’t totally clear whether being given one of the newer recruits as a patrol partner was a vote of confidence in his abilities to teach them right, or designed to twist the knife with a reminder that nobody was going to make sure he got his preferred assignments anymore. Either way, he was sure as hell he was about to find out. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d shown someone the ropes, and it couldn’t be that difficult. Unless the guy was going to come over all precious or rebellious on him. He didn’t have the time or the patience for that, and it wouldn’t end well. Okay, they had all morning, but he was not spending all morning spoon-feeding a newbie.

He was already finding himself exhausted enough by 3pm these days without that added workload. The sooner it started, the sooner it’d be over, folks always said. He just needed to make sure this guy was on the same page. Sinclair - Felix, the rota said. Found himself wondering if that was a relative of Doc Sinclair’s. If it was, he’d probably have to try harder not to be an asshole. “Sinclair! Look sharp, man. You know what you’re doing out there, or are we gonna have to do Patrolling 101?”
