On a planning and fettling day*, ready for a couple of weeks in Keswick, and daydreaming. I’m hoping for easy still summer weather like the first image, atop Graystones with perhaps the most obvious handrail feature around for the descent. Looking at the long range forecast though, more likely is the compass and care winter is coming weather I got on Skiddaw five days later. Higher up, there was well under 100m visibility and sleet in that mist.

Both are fun though, if you know what you’re doing.

Thomas was staring up at Minho, staying completely still in his arms. His eyes had that usual lovesick gaze as his mouth threatened to part in awe at just his existence. He was constantly admiring him, sneaking glances when he wasn't looking and holding it when he met his eyes. He was the only one allowed to run his fingers through his hair, a much better and happier thing to do with them than flip people off. Even years later, his stomach would twist in giddy excitement when they touched, shivers trailing up his soul like an addictive rush.

He found him everywhere. If Minho was relaxing on the shore, he’d find him. If Minho was sitting on the edge of the cliff, he’d find him. If Minho was hiding in their hammock, he’d find him. Half the time it wasn't even on purpose. His heart would take over his legs, and he’d end up with his lover.

Everyone knew they were together. Not because they announced it or they were full of PDA. It was as simple as the way Thomas would look and talk about him, his eyes lighting up and voice warm and full of life.

Every morning, Minho awoke to an adoring face and arms around him. Sometimes he was given soft kisses as his hand was being held. In some way, he was woken up with love.

He never expected this. Ever. Even when he was hit with waves of jealousy in the Scorch as he watched Thomas and Teresa stand close, smiling in ways he wished he was being given, he never thought anything else would come of it. He never thought anything ever could. After all, he wasn't one for feelings anyway. It was easier to keep them buried down and pretend they didn't exist. After three years of watching Runners he trained die from his hand in banishment, it was easier to stay numb. It didn't matter if that meant denying himself feelings of love.

He thought of Thomas when he was captured. He had no choice but to face his demons, including all his harsh emotions. They hit him hard, crashing down like tsunamis. Every type of pain, fear, guilt, and care started to haunt him. Still, he expected nothing.

He never expected Thomas to hug him tightly.

He never expected Thomas to sit under the night sky with him to help him feel better.

He never expected Thomas to whisper that he loved him.

He never expected Thomas to kiss him.

He never expected Thomas to fall way harder than he ever could.

Apparently engagement can be driven by photos of yourself* in posts. So, here I am atop Hindscarth a couple of days ago. Though I’m just a shadow of my former self after some pretty unpleasant health issues. Though I have been gifted an awesome abdominal scar**.

Decent test of my current fitness levels, properly fit I’d expect to get from Little Town car park to the top of Hindscarth in around 60 minutes***. Took me 90 by my watch; probably actually only about 80 given a nav cock-up in the valley, letting a very nervously descending group past on the scrambly bit group and stopping for photos. Diabetes behaved itself too, which recently is a surprise. I’ll take that given the first quarter of the year.

*not sure myself; I’ve a voice for mime and visually am best suited for radio …

**which a very inked friend suggests I have a little graffiti added to leave it looking like a snake - I’m a three score years old Jew, but very tempted.

***useless info unless you’re familiar with the northern lakeland fells, so - about 5km, 500m ascent up easy scrambling, farmland and steepish runnable ground

Favorite episode from dbd?

My favorite episode is probably Episode 7. It's just such an emotional rollercoaster, from start to finish. There's the staircase scene, the Simon scene, the flashback to when Charles first met Edwin, and so, so much more.

The acting in this episode absolutely blew me away — specifically George Rexstrew's performance as Edwin — and the scriptwriting was absolutely phenomenal.

The cinematography was breathtaking and incredibly clever. I loved the way that they shot the different scenes in Hell, angling and twisting the camera to evoke whatever emotion was intended. There were so many different nuances and details that were added into this one episode — so much so that I'd probably have to make a post about about each one separately.

One scene in this episode that I think is thoroughly underappreciated is the scene with Simon and Edwin. This scene meant so much to me, as a queer person, especially as someone who's gone through a crap ton of internalized homophobia (although I can't say I've sacrificed any of my classmates to a demon over it). Seeing something like that portrayed in media in a way that was so real and raw was insanely meaningful to me.

I feel like this small subplot of the show perfectly represents how the show blends fantasy and reality. Dead Boy Detectives is a supernatural show with supernatural characters. The main characters are ghosts, their friend is a psychic, and they're constantly under the threat of an evil witch. However, the show tackles so many real life issues (issues such as homophobia, racism, and domestic violence), and they do it with a level of grace that perfectly balances fiction and reality. The Simon scene perfectly demonstrates this.

I also appreciated the way that the showriters went about dealing with Simon's internalized homophobia. Generally speaking, when people suggest that homophobes themselves are likely queer, they mean it as a joke, or an insult. "You're homophobic, so you must be gay," and they'll simply laugh at the disgusted reaction — which is, in it of itself, simply another provocation of homophobia. Dead Boy Detectives, however, went at this from a different angle. Because yes, homophobes themselves can be queer — internalized homophobia does not discriminate, ironically enough — but Dead Boy Detectives took this narrative and flipped it on its head. They took the common trope of the homophobe being secretly in the closet, and further delved into what that truly meant for everyone involved. They explored the destructive reality of internalized homophobia for someone like Simon without, at the same time, undermining the struggle and torment that Edwin was put through. And the fact that they did all of this in the span of just 10 minutes is absolutely mindboggling to me.

Episode 7 had a little bit of everything, and I loved it so so much <33
