João Cancelo /Fermin Lopez

“Where’s João’?” Fermin shifts from side to side. Robert will know but he’s inviting himself to get the disappointed dad face. He knows he’s acted like an asshole.

Robert spares him a lecture and not much of a look, “right next to the godawful racket.” He waves his hand to the portable speakers that give the impression of a jumble of cords even thought they should be wireless.

Fermin turns to them but only sees Felix. “Other João.” He sighs. Robert can be a passive-aggressive asshole, but Fermin has taken twenty minutes to work himself up to this, he kind of wants to get this part over so he can give his speech to João. He kind of wants that to be over so he can hopefully get taken to bed and worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

Something he should have realised earlier.

Robert looks up at him then, he doesn’t look annoyed through so much as confused. “What other João?”

Fermin huffs, he’s a second away from stamping his foot, he knows he’s been petulant and like the child João accused him of being. But he’s trying okay? He’s trying now.

“João Cancelo?” Fermin does his best to sound reasonable. “I want to apologise okay Lewa? You don’t have to be his guard dog.”

Robert looks up at him, even sitting he takes up space, and he focuses all his attention on Fermin. He can feel himself get close to tearing up. He knows, he knows okay? He screwed up and blew the last couple of weeks of them being together. But he’s going to make it up to João. As soon as he finds him.

He’s been to his place that’s closed up, his locker is empty. His car isn’t in the lot but he’d planned on having a few drinks after the last game according to Pedri. According to Pedri he’d planned on getting hammered.

“Why on earth would I be his guard dog?” Robert sounds genuinely confused.

“I know I was a dick Lewa,” Fermin takes a breath. “And I know you didn’t approve of us dating. But I want to speak with him and preferably not in front of the whole team.”

Robert takes a sharp breath “when in the hell were you dating João Cancelo?” His voice rises and Xavi looks up from his intent conversation with Gavi. No one else paying them any attention.

“We told you it was more than just sex, Christ Robert, we’ve been over this! You know he cares about me so do it for him if not for me okay?” Fermin runs his hand through his hair. Hopes the wobble in his voice is hidden busy whatever noise Felix is generating.

“What the fuck you’re sleeping with Cancelo? When did that start? How did you even meet?” Robert stands up, even barefoot in the locker room , he towers over Fermin. The beer bottle he was drinking from threatens to tip over and Xavi is watching them sharply.

Fermin blinks back the tears of frustration that are rising. “Come on…”

Xavi’s smooth voice cuts them off “Robert? What’s wrong?”

Robert turns to the man who is no longer their coach. Fermin feels a stab of regret he hasn’t felt with that. To upset by João’s loan ending. He feels a keen loss and Xavi is still here. He can’t even imagine what it will be like to come to the first training session without him.

“Did you know about Fermin and João?” Robert sounds accusatory.

“Have you two had an argument?” Xavi sounds amused. He’d always pretended he didn’t know what was happening, but Fermin guesses it doesn’t matter now.

Robert looks thunderstruck “you knew?”

Xavi looks between the two of them. “Knew what? Felix is right there, I’m sure they can make up before the end of today.”

“João Cancelo!” Robert hisses the words out. “Has apparently been sleeping with Fermin!”

It’s Xavi’s turn to look startled. “Since when?” He turns to Fermin “he’s ten years older than you!”

“Nine,” Fermin knows he sounds sulky. “And it’s not just sleeping together. Come on Lewa you already threatened him. He thought you had gotten over it. Given us your blessing or whatever.”

“I would have blessed him with my fists if I knew he was sleeping with my underage teammate!” Robert sounds outraged.

“Since when do you know João Cancelo?” Xavi sounds as confused as Fermín feels.

“I don’t!” Robert’s voice is rising and more of the team are looking at them.

“I’ll find him myself then!” Fermin is over it. Everything. This season, Xavi leaving, Gavi being injured. João not picking up his phone since after the game after Fermin flounced and gave him the silent treatment for two weeks.”

Xavi soothes Robert mourners how he’ll deal with it and steers Fermin out of the room. His voice when he starts speaking is gentle and he he asks “how did you meet?”

Fermin wipes his eyes. “At training?”

“Yes but when?” Fermin looks up at Xavi. “What don’t mean when? The start of the season? Xavi come on. I know I have been a dick to him but I want to make peace with him okay? Just tell me where he is, I might have blown anything else but I have to make him know I don’t hate him!”

Xavi leans back on the wall “I didn’t even know that you knew him until five minutes ago. And I’m confused why you think I would know where he is. On the way to Wembley for the final is my guess?”

Fermin can feel his face screwing up in confusion. “What final?”

Xavi sighs “I’m not sure what you are trying to achieve Fermin. But you have kept this quiet enough that I didn’t even know you were seeing him. But, unless you know about an injury I don’t ,Real are getting ready for the champions League final.”

Fermin wobbles, his stomach feels queasy and whatever it feels like, it must look worse because Xavi looks alarmed and pushes off the wall and holds him by the shoulders. “Fermin? Did he,” Xavi voice gets even softer, “did he force you in some way? Was it something to do with a Classico game?”

Fermin shakes his head. “We were practically living together. I screwed up. When the loan wasn’t made permanent I told him it was just a fling that he didn’t mean anything to me.” His voice sounds weird even to him. “I fucked up. Told him from the car park after training I wished it never happened. I blocked him. Ignoring him in training. Made Lewa run interference. And he just accepted it in the end. Said I was too young and he should have known.” Fermin can feel his voice break. Joao has sent him begging messages at first, pleading to be told what was wrong. But after a few days it flipped to anger and then dismissal.

Fermin had been blocked back. It’s why he couldn’t reach out to him privately.

Xavi pushed him back by the shoulders slightly. “I’m not sure what I can do to help Fermin. I can reach out to some acquaintances at Real, but did anyone there even know?”

Fermin looks at him blankly. “Why would you ask anyone at Real?” A horrified look crosses Xavi’s face.

“Fermin,” his voice is low, urgent, “you said you wished you never met him? Where did you make the wish exactly?”

the pattern i notice the most is how i typically use one or both character names in the opening line. and also that there's some kind of main call to action that jump starts the scene. the only exception to that is 2 (trent/lucho) and 8 (ben/mikel) which are more internal thought. im actually shocked that wasn't a more common theme.
