FFXIV day 9: 'lend an ear'

“Leave her,” Estinien says. “Your words cannot reach her now.”

Elilona says, “No.”

The wind hurls flecks of snow between the spires, over them all. Ysayle stares past them into the greyness of the clouds, unreached. Elilona is no more movable than the mountains. Alphinaud chews his lip as he looks between the three, too newly wise to interfere and not wise enough to ease the way.

“We have not the time to wait for her to gather up the pieces of her shattered faith,” Estinien says, folding his arms.

“You go on ahead,” Elilona says, softly, calmly. There is something shockingly fey in her eyes, liquid gold in this stone-and-steel place. Lightning crackles distant and purple over the hills. “I can catch up with you.”

“But —”

“I’m not leaving.”

For a moment there is only the wind and Ysayle’s shaking hands. Then Estinien turns on his heel and with one leap clears the worn stone steps. Alphinaud looks to Elilona first, and she unbends enough to give him a single nod. He leaves slowly, at first, looking back, and then breaks into a trot when his feet reach the base of the stairs.

Elilona sits on the windswept ground and pulls a sewing hoop from the depths of her coat.

For a long time she sews on the mountaintop, while the wind bites her fingers white and clumsy. She lets it, picking out the hem of another coat. The result doesn’t matter now.

Finally Ysayle turns her head. “You should go after them,” she rasps, dry and rusted. Elilona looks up.

“Should I?”

“Yes.” Ysayle tries to smile. It’s a failure and a shaking one, her shoulders still hunched against the truth, but it’s a try. “I’ll… I need…”

“I understand.” Elilona lurches to her feet, graceless for once. “Are you… if I can…”

“This war can’t go on like this. That much is still true.” Her voice is thin with it. “I cannot… I cannot go with you. But.”

“All right.” Elilona takes Ysayle’s hand in both her own, swallowing Ysyale’s fingers. She presses her forehead to her own knuckles and breathes in, and out, and in. Ysayle’s breath hitches like a sob.

“I’ll look for you,” Elilona says, and lets her hand go. Ysayle nods.
