"ok guys we really need you to dial back this whole deep emotional bond thing you've had going on because it's making specifically me nervous so the plan is now you're going to go on dates and be antagonistic. like an old married couple. also arguing is considered flirtatious in cardassian society but we're ignoring that lol. just fight and now garak we're going to put this child in front of you and there will be absolutely zero romantic tension between you but we're going to frame it like there is and also she has a crush on you and it's going to define like 80% of her character motivations from now on because women aren't people. perfect. good. good. also outsiders aren't allowed to see dead cardassians and shri-tals are only for family members lol but julian you're going to be part of both of those things. it's all very heterosexual."

Izuna x Tobirama au in which Izuna or Tobirama is kidnapped by the others clan and held captive but Tobirama slowly comes to the horrifying realisation that izuna is a yapper
(RELATED TO THIS POST IN WHICH I TALK ABOUT AN HC THAT ALL UCHIHAS ARE SECRETLY YAPPERS BUT ONLY TO LIKE, ONE PERSON)
See, now Tobirama doesn't know about the whole "there's only one person they'll be comfortable yapping to" and he thinks that this may be some weird tactic to get information out of him.
Like Tobirama, kidnapped in enemy territory. He's thinking through every situation possible. He could get out. Except someone with equal power to him just walked through the door, he closes his eyes and looks away, as long as he's looking away they can't get him. He knows who he is just by the way he walks, the way he breathes and the way his heart beats.
Ba-bum, Ba-dum.
He stops approximately a metre away from him.
Ba-bum, Ba-dum.
He crouches down, getting eye-level with Tobirama.
Ba-bum, Ba-dum.
Tobirama would not submit. No matter the torture he be put through by the Uchiha before him. He had danced with swords in the midst of the evanescent flames with Izuna, he felt the burn of the fire and the cool sweat dripping down his temple. He knew all of that Bastards tricks, how to counter them and how to block them.
Ba-dum, Badum.
Izuna opened his mouth to speak, pausing for a short moment to collect his thoughts. 'I will not yield, I will not yield,' Tobirama chanted to himself silently, mind racing he of every angle he could go at this. He knew Izuna well enough to know what his counter would be. But he knew Izuna would be thinking of ways to counter his counter attack.
"Do you know the breed of dog that's native to the mountains in the East? The small ones with the fluffy coat."
Ba-dum Ba-dum Ba-dum Ba-dum Ba-dum Ba-dum.
"...What?"
Oops went on a bit of a writing spree whoopsie daisy's!!!!
But ANYWAYS you get the jist. Tobirama sits there really really confused while Izuna talks his ear off. Like Izuna cannot physically control himself from the yaps. Like their convos are 25% Izuna angrily insulting Tobirama for some sort of information and 25% is him Snarkily yapping about anything that interests him and 50% willing him to open his eyes in silence, like way to close to Tobirama's face. (It's a scare tactic, obviously!!)
Tobirama is originally upset confused and pissed off till Izuna brings up Madara. Tobirama is like "This is my chance im gonna learn all their weaknesses" Izuna complains about how Madara idk is way too strict with routines or something and Izuna was just a little tiny itsy bitsy bit late and he got chewed out. Its not like Izuna did it on purpose‼️ Usually he's very punctual (kind of) but a bunch of suitors kept bothering him‼️ oh uhmm btw bc he's like 19-20 (he was like 24 when he died i think) now and bunch of people of the clan want to get married to him bc Madara has made it clear he won't be taking any wives and threw them all on Izuna, anyways isn't it so rude for Madara to be mad at that like its his fault anyways that Izunas late and omg you'll never guess what he said during training too.
So Tobirama has technically picked up some good information but not really like what he was expecting? He knew that he'd have to read between the lines to try and actually get any actual info that would help him but he just really doesnt know what to do with what he was told. Like he didn't want to know that Madara keeps getting into arguments with the lady that trades fruits in the North East East centre of the Uchiha district over how 1 watermelon should not cost 26 apples. But uhh... its nice to know??
At some point Izuna storms into the room and yells at Tobirama cause Izuna assumes that Tobirama has used that weird idiot fucked up brain of his to make a jutsu that forces Izuna to yap. Like, Izuna can be a little yappy sometimes but it's never this bad and NEVER to a prisoner what did that bastard do to him‼️‼️
This whole time Tobirama actually assumed that it was some stupid tactic to make him talk, but apparently Izuna is under as much stress as he is. Well, not really but he's in an amount of stress that is not insubstantial
I cant think of anything else for this one someone do it for me!!!!
OR if we go the Senju kidnapped Izuna route it could just be Tobirama trying to get information from Izuna and all Izuna will talk about is random bullshit that's kind of relevant and maybe a little helpful but like only really specifically. Like the Senju are totally prepared to fight that one Uchiha with the three ponytails who snores, not loud, but really squeaky like.
They think Izuna is just immune to intimidating tactics but in all reality they're working, but working in a way that he's like "If I'm being interrogated cruely here then what's happening to the Uchiha what if they're all dead omg oh no omg" he just misses his home and he doesn't know if Madara or the clan is okay without him there he is literally in the worst state of his life and when hes anxious he starts to yap and its especially bad when he's with Tobirama. Like the words are just flowing out neither he nor Tobirama can stop it. Like at some point Tobirama isn't even trying to use scare tactics anymore he just sits there and listens to Izuna anxiously waffle about literally everything. Like just when Tobirama thinks he has spoken about literally everything that can be spoken about but somehow Izuna just keeps talking.
And like at some point Izunas throat is a little raw bc he has been speaking non stop for like two weeks and he's trying desperately to keep quiet, he's like spaced out multiple times and not realised what he's been saying for all he knows he's told Tobirama all of his clans secrets and hes getting more and more anxious and just when Izuna manages to stop his 1 hour rant about the bird that used to follow him around and shit on his food there's just like a minute of silence that Izuna desperately wants to fill with the rest of the story about the bird (He still has yet to tell Tobirama about the bird somehow projectile shitting onto lamb he had yet to trade, but bc of the crap on the meat nobody would take it and he swears he heard that bird laughing he KNOWS it!!!!) And he's tweaking trying to keep quiet, till suddenly Tobirama starts talking!! He's lowered his guards!!
Ofc Tobirama isn't going to like tell Izuna all of the clan secrets, but he tells a short tale about Hashirama gambling his shoes away to a six year old child and having to walk home shamefully while Tobirama stared on in silence. Izuna, who has only seen Hashirama in the most serious of circumstances, almost crys from laughter (his vocal cords are DYING) Izuna, after getting a drink of water then tells a story about Madara getting a squirrel tangled in his hair, and not noticing the crying critter for about 5 hours. After this event there was then a game among clansmen, "How many things can we put in Madaras hair before he notices" Tobirama thinks this is hilarious of course, and the both of them bond over their brothers being absolute fucking idiots.
And in like a meeting where everyone wants to know what information Tobirama is getting, and he, who is still on a high after sharing a good laugh with his prisoner, tells everyone about the game. Now- they have word that there will be a battle in the land of ice quite soon, (why? I don't know why are you asking me) and Hashirama feels all left out,,, he wants to stuff random crap into Madaras hair too!!!!
Madara, of course, is so not happy about this WHERE the hell is his brother he is tweaking the fuck out and this battle will be the one where Hashirama dies. The clan has literally been in the worst panic ever since ever and nobody is okay. Even the mean fruit lady looked upset!! They have seventeen different invasion plans and all of them are gory and very sort of glass half empty situation. Like everyone genuinely believes Izuna is either dead or dying and has been traumatized on every level.
Hashirama however has different plans (apart from the plans to put feathers in Madaras hair) see he's a smart lad and he's noticed that Tobirama is a lot more chipper than he used to be. And being the good brother is, he spies on them both. And it was heartwarming!! I mean it was a little mortifying hearing his beloved brother and Izuna laugh at the time Hashirama tried to cut his own bangs and absolutely tear him to shreds but after he got over that he was absolutely giddy!! They're just like Him and Madara were back then frfr!! This could be their chance for peace!!! I mean, out of all of them Izuna was the one who was the most against a peace treaty!!! He doesnt seem too against it now seeing as he's comfortable enough to have general banter with Tobirama!!! Oh well they're quiet now, wait no they're not, holy shit are they making out wait what no maybe its not like him and Madara uh oh maybe he should leave this feels a little private um. Uh..
I don't really want to think of the details on how Izuna actually gets out cause that sounds boring so like Hashirama probably assured Madara all is well or whatever and said some talk-no-jutsu shit to calm Madara down and bring him to some peace grounds or something and get Tobirama to get Izuna back. Which Tobirama doesn't want to do but despite Tobirama being funny and interesting and so cool Izuna really really wants to see his brother and clan mates again and he will chew through Tobirama if it means getting home.
Anyway I'm thinking the war ends with like Izuna getting sent from the Uchiha to marry Tobirama as like a peace offering or smth. The Uchiha are like really sympathetic towards Izuna like "Oh we're so sorry it had to be you this must be so hard for you I saw how you were like totally interested in the women of the clan" and Izunas like "Ikrrr its so terrible I'm sooo totally sorry i couldn't marry any of the girls of the clan boooo :("
Happy ending, TobiIzu are together, Izuna can yap freely, bc of the newly opened trade paths the price of watermelons has lowered to 14 apples, Madara has multiple caterpillars in his hair and almost all of both of the clans have lost respect for Madara and Hashirama and now treat them as those silly guys and not powerful political figures.

the day he died, john who was both a father and a god to the boy he'd raised in his image, told dean he might have to kill the brother he'd raised as his own son, who he'd protected his whole life, whose health and wellbeing he'd placed above his own since he was barely old enough to reach the kitchen counters.
and for the next fifteen years dean went to such extremes to avoid ever having to see sam die at his own hand or someone else's that he sold his own soul and helped an angel trick sam into saying yes to possession and killed death itself.
and then.
and then.
dean faced god.
and he told god, "the whole cain-and-abel thing. us dead. whatever. i'll kill sam. sam will kill me. we'll kill each other. okay? you pick. but, first, you got to put everything back the way it was. the people, the birds. cas. you've gotta bring him back."
and honestly i still feel very calm and normal about that after thinking about it for the past three and a half years

Do you think that Isabella has always thougth that Ray was planing something while asking all those rewards (and not using them a lot). I feel that she knew that he was going to do something just before his shippement but thought she could handle it. Maybe she was even sure that he was the one to push Norman and Emma to go to the gate this day (the reason she called him a traitor later). That he planned to escape with them since 6 years. Even the night of the escape, before all starts, she still felt that Ray could do something to not be eaten by demons (and she was so right even if she didn't thought that he would do THAT).
I wonder if a little part of her, that she didn't want to acknowledge, was hoping that her son could do what she couldn't and could escape the same fate than Leslie. Because a part of her would have be broken to give her own child to demons.
And i'm sure she was relieved to know that Ray survived his 12th birthday. Even if she couldn't know if he was still alive until his return almost 2 years later (even if Peter Ratri would have take pleasure to tell her that her son was dead)
I agree with the first paragraph since Isabella confirms as much in her monologue at the beginning of chapter 33:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her not suspecting Ray was willing to sacrifice his own life for the escape is a major component of their plan.
I wonder if a little part of her, that she didn't want to acknowledge, was hoping that her son could do what she couldn't and could escape the same fate as Leslie.
This I disagree with, but it's largely pedantic around the use of "hope" because Isabella's entire modius operandi at Grace Field was based on her killing the hope she entertained in the months between discovering the truth about the house and her shipment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TPN Light Novel 2: Moms’ Song of Remembrance - “The Starry Sky and Leslie’s List” Chapter 9 | Chapter 25)
She's fully entrenched in upholding the farm system because going at this from Emma's perspective—that escape is possible and there is a world outside of Grace Field for humans—stands as an affront to everything she's given up, and it's a terrifying and enraging concept after two decades of knowing the truth.
At the same time, it also breaks up the monotony of her life at the house, and one of the many bonuses of reread/rewatching the series is seeing how she alternates between amusement at potentially the first challenge she's had in years and rage and jealousy at her children's earnest conviction in their plan when she had been so thoroughly denied the same at her age.
And it isn't enough for her to just stop their escape. In one of the most harrowing scenes of the arc, she goes to Emma at her lowest point to convince her to accept the same fate as all the moms before her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 31)
Essentially copying my tags from this post, but regardless of whether you believe Isabella genuinely loved the children in her care, framing this as part of an entirely selfless act for the sake of ensuring Emma's survival is disingenuous. Isabella's worldview was on the line too, and even if she would choose to dismantle the farm system if it was within her power to do so at the time, it didn't change the reality she was born into and lived for years.
Tumblr media
The sooner Emma accepted that, the sooner they could both return to an illusion of peace.
I don't regard Isabella as a reliable narrator when it comes to Ray in the second light novel, and while I do believe his death would be conflicting for her (illustrated in her "has it been twelve years already? Or twelve years at last?" line in chapter 33), I also believe she treated it as a forgone conclusion that she viewed with a mix of detached sadness and relief. The tragedy of him having his life cut short like so many children before him mitigated by no longer having the living, breathing reminder of the worst violence the farm system inflicted upon her in her daily life, and the brief, wistful musings of what their life could have been like in a kinder world when all that was left was the memory of him that could become fonder with distance.
Because a part of her would have been broken to give her own child to demons.
This I also agree with, but I think we're coming at this from different angles since I don't see it as her being broken by the loss of Ray as an individual she's nurtured and witnessed growing into his own person, but rather as being confronted with the aforementioned acts of violence she endured at headquarters and how much of herself she had to sacrifice to the system in order to survive, a reminder that she will never truly be free under the demons, no matter how deep she finds herself in the fantasy of the house.
And I'm sure she was relieved to know that Ray survived his 12th birthday. Even if she couldn't know if he was still alive until his return almost 2 years later
Agreed, and it's something that surprises her at first and makes her reflect on her treatment of him over the years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TPN Light Novel 2: Moms’ Song of Remembrance - “The Starry Sky and Leslie’s List” Chapter 9 | Chapter 25)
She spent so much time convincing herself she held no maternal affection for him because of what he uniquely represented to her, but after being humbled by him and the rest of her children, she accepts what she did to him and all the reasons why she did it, from the ones that could be construed as noble to her selfish and petty ones.
Tumblr media
It's why she chides herself for even wondering if he would sing the lullaby she passed down to him outside of Grace Field's walls. How vain of her to wish what it represented to her unto him when it served as a reminder of all she denied him.

Flame - Herb - Sun - Spark?
Keyword: Energy
Key Concepts: magic, healing, society, the spark of life, torad, cooking, sustenance, vitality, prosperity, harnessing power, expansion
Color: liath - grey
Tree: leamhán - elm, caorthann - rowan
Bird: lacha/lachu - duck
Art: luamnacht - pilotage
Agriculture: loman - rope
Metre: Laíd - poem / Laíd lúascach - rocking
Tumblr media
Bríatharoghaim
lí súla
"lustre of the eye"
- would absolutely point to the flame meaning
- it could also be a reference to rowan berries (star inside?)
- Meroney says it could also be translated as "color of the eye", backed by one gloss that states "on account of the color of the berries" (the other says "beauty of its berries"), which backs a flame meaning, as rowan's berries are a fiery color
- also the color of flame reflected in eyes???
- cáer means berry OR red-hot mass of slag and metal
- OR it could be a reference to the sun as the eye in the sky
- The Evernew Tongue refers to the light and color of the eye as coming from the sun and stars
- phrase used in the Imramm Brain to refer to the Otherworld
carae cethrae
"friend of cattle"
- does fit rowan as it is used to protect animals, and cethrae can mean animals generally, or herds/flocks.
- also likely a reference to plants/herbs/grass
lúth cethrae
"sustenance of cattle"
- harder to explain from an arboreal perspective, but herb makes perfect sense. possibly this is why elm was added, cattle eat elm blossoms
- could be a more oblique reference to how cattle were a symbol of wealth, and therefore status
- if the sun is related to Luis, plants would make sense via photosynthesis
The name "Luis" is derived either from luise/loise "flame" or lus "herb"; from the PIE root of leuk- "to shine" or leudh- "to grow," respectively. Or possibly, as I believe, it is an allusion to both words.
Loise can also figuratively mean "glory, splendour, fame, brilliance" or "prosperity, worldly splendour." While lus/luth can mean either herb or vegetable enterchangeably. Other possible meanings are "swarm" or "great many" [cite].
My personal understanding of Luis is that it encapsulates an understanding of "energy," "vitality," and "magic." Using fire to transform metal was seen as a magic in-and-of-itself, and herbs are very commonly used in spells and healing. Magic harnesses energy and potential, using it to work towards your own gain. Not only are witches capable of working magic (and symbolically tied to flames and rowan), but so are healers, using herbs for healing potions and magical poetry to declare intent.
Rowan
Rowan trees (caorthann) being associated with Luis further develops this idea. It was widely known that rowan was powerful in the hands of good or evil. Near Bealtaine, livestock would be thoroughly checked for signs of magic, often a rowan twig, which would be removed and replaced by a rowan twig or cross of their own. Rowan could be used for witchcraft (meaning: destructive/stealing magic), or for protection against those forces. Rowan branches or crosses were hung over the thresholds of Gaelic homes, placed there during Bealtaine for protection from the turbulant nature of that time.
Rowan berries were said to be the food of the Daoine Maithe, and eating them was said to add a year to a person's life. The berries of the Quicken Tree of Dubhros gave the satisfaction of rich food, the exhilaration of wine, and protection from sickness or disease when three berries were eaten, encapsulating both sustenance and life-energy. If a 100-year-old person ate of the berries, they found themselves suddenly 30-years-old. There is also the rowan tree from Táin Bó Froích ("The Cattle Raid of Fróech") whose berries prolonged life and healed sickness.
Rowan seems to have had very strong and old connections to fire in general. Rowan spits were used for roasting meat over a fire; Cú Chulainn was offered dog meat cooked on rowan rods, which lead to his doom. Keeping some rowan in the house was a known protection against fire. St. Patrick was said to chase and defeat a fire-breathing monster named Caorthannach (derived from the Irish word for rowan). Rowan wood was commonly used for the sacred fires used to cook ceremonial cakes and the teinn'-éiginn, a sacred fire created from simply friction that was protective against many maladies, including the Evil Eye. In Forbhais Droma Dámhgháire ("The Siege of Knocklong"), on both sides of the battle, druids ritually made fires of rowan, speaking incantations over them to influence the other side. Divining the outcome was done by gazing into the smoke and flames.
This all seems to point to rowan being a symbol of energy, power, and life.
Herbs + Flame
Mixing the meanings of flame and herb point to the burning of herbs as a fumigate (tied to cleansing and protection magic), and more broadly, to cooking food. First off, fumigates were used for banishing negative entities, and for healing the body. It could even be said that the color for Luis being liath, "grey," is an allusion to the smoke arising from the burning of herbs. The genealogy of St. Brighid has a reference to "luaths-luis," stating "it will not harm me." Luath is either "quick, fast" or "ashes," so this could also be a reference to fire turning things to ash.
Not only does herb + fire = ash or smoke, but the combination also commonly releases scent. The Abrahamic God saw the scent of the burnt offering as the actual sacrifice. This could possibly point to an older symbol of energy spent.
Secondly, Fire is how food goes from raw to cooked, unlocking different and more nutrients, giving us energy to develop our brains, and therefore, society as a whole. J. F. Nagy has a strong working hypothesis about raw food being linked to the Otherworld and cooked food to this world. Luis could point to the methods we used to cook ourselves out of the Otherworld and into this world, as a creation of society.
This concept can be further developed through the idea of the "spark of life." Toradh is both an Irish and Scottish Gaelic word (torad in Old Gaelic) that means "fruit, produce, effect" or "result, profit." This was the essential aspect of offerings that the Sidhe (or other spirits) consumed. It was seen as unhealthy to eat food that had the toradh removed from it, hence why offerings were never to be consumed after being offered. If toradh is the essential "goodness" within food, or the effect of food, it stands to reason this would also be the part of food that energizes and brings life to the one that consumes it. Boiling this down, toradh is the spark of life.
Sun
Cú Chulainn's Bríatharogham is lí súla, meaning "lustre of the eye." There are many possible interpretations of this phrase, but one I've never seen discussed is relating it to the sun. The word súil means eye, and is often used when referring to the Evil Eye, a belief connected to the magical power of the eyes. The word súil comes from the proto-Celtic pluralized word for sun, most likely pointing to a belief in the sun as the eye of the sky. In Tenga Bithnúa ("The Evernew Tongue"), a medieval Irish tract about the mysteries of the universe, specifies that the matter of the sun and stars is what makes the color and light of a person's eyes. All of this seems to point to an esoteric meaning baked into the Bríatharoghaim of Luis, that the greatest flame of all, the sun, is inherently linked.
So many herbs were meant to be harvested at Midsummer to have their full magical effectiveness. This is likely because the sun is giving the plant energy. Maybe the flame of Luis is the sun, seeing as there is an obvious inherent link between sunshine and plants. I'm sure they understood photosynthesis, or at least that the sun is necessary for plants to grow.
It's easy to see how the concepts of the sun, fire, vegetation, and the magic qualities of both eyes and rowan could all be linked in the medieval Irish mind. Each of these symbols all inherently relate to life, and the energy that keeps the flame of life flickering.

Ode to Cerulean
Fairest of Crayola's hues Most monumental of her blues The color most enchanting From the pack of sixty-four
Brighter than the summer's skies Yet not distracting to the eyes It's elegant and regal And it makes the spirit soar
Good for flowers, skies, and dresses The presence of it always blesses Ev'ry picture that contains it How we wish to use it more
But since the pack has only one We must be sparing with the fun And guard the treasure closely Keep it always in our store Art requires colors fine So as for fav'rites, it stays mine I'll keep it always on me Honor it forevermore
