Financial Liberty vs Statue of Liberty
As a person in their mid 20s, my money problems are very frustrating and a lot of it stems from being a graduate student in one of the most expensive cities in US: New York City. A few months ago friends of mine were visiting from out of town, and of course as a good friend, I had to give them an insider look into the city. What was frustrating throughout their trip was how financially unable I was to partake in the events.
My friends wanted to go to all the usual tourist spots: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, an array of museums, landmark department stores and regular restaurants etc. But the entire time of their trip, I kept mentally thinking: "I hope they don't ask to take the boat ride tour of the Statue of Liberty"... "I hope they don't want to go to an expensive restaurant or museum" or "I hope they don't want to buy passes to go to the observation deck of the Empire State Building"... I felt bad for thinking this way because they had come to NYC to visit me, but at the same time, I knew I couldn't afford the expensive places they wanted to go to and the expensive activities they wanted to do.
I think at the end of their stay, my friends finally realized how expensive it is to live in a place like NYC and that (1) paying my undergraduate loans (yes, I'm still trying to pay them off 5 years later with the ridiculous interest rate hikes), (2) paying inflated rent prices for my tiny apartment, and (3) paying for my basic human necessities come first on my list, not a stupid ticket to the Statue of Liberty.
