Arsonist's Lullabye (Hozier) This is the Desolation song to me - not just because of the fire motif, although that’s a great bonus, but because it talks about the impulse to destroy in pursuit of your goals, even at the cost of your personal relationships. The narrator keeps thinking he’s found ways to escaped his destructive urges, but they won’t leave him alone, and he (metaphorically and literally) burns everything down around him: “When I was a man I thought it ended / When I knew love’s perfect ache / But my peace has always depended / On all the ashes in my wake.” The refrain is also very quintessentially Desolation: “All you have is your fire / And the place you need to reach / Don’t you ever tame your demons / But always keep ‘em on a leash.”
