Citizen Journalism: the Archaic Rules Remixed w Millennial Freedom of Expression.
Despite the controversy the Academy of Art University has misfortunately acquired, this is an institution dedicated to their mission. Students who have the skills, the talent, the freedom, and the intuitive guidance to full on achieve the dream jobs that are hard to find. Personally, I have created ideas that I have only dreamed about before. Schools inspired by AAU’s hands-on and industry professional aid have been making a killing with modeling the perfect candidates for jobs. On the other hand, that contributing factor plus, a family owned business, that is sticking to their guns. Although, this controversy is more than just hear say; the attempt to strip us of our rights has begun:
Find an issue that affects me as a student, commonly. Whether in the field or gathering information for stories.
“Student Media Law” is the first-hand experience American students have to exercising their rights granted by the first amendment. Although, limitations are thrown when students begin to use their creative minds publicly. What is known as the Yea ruling supports school’s legal liability to avoid censoring content created by students. In the case of Yea v. Town of Lexington when a student sued his public high school for limiting his first amendment rights. Regardless of how the students message was “told” or delivered, his peers withheld from commenting about the matter. Thankfully the court was solely in favor of the student’s decision to deem the ad appropriate or not.
Alongside this ruling, the students that attend schools like AAU and participate in assignment like ours; obtain more self-awareness than any other adolescents on all media platforms. Therefore, revealing that there is a code of conduct when it comes to the first amendment’s rights. There is no doubt that the Vines or Instagram videos that majority females post for likes or retweets are 75% indecent. When I started paying attention to who I followed and vice versa, gave me a since of responsibility of my character. I know now that I have to represent myself on and off the screen.
One demonstration of negative use of our media rights and privileges is when the different types of themes of entertainment is protected as well. Thus causing more than just administration but government officials to intervene upon other person’s safety. Especially, during school hours or activities that make these freedoms as concern to elders. In a personal situation, I’m sure if an idea from my younger creative mind were to make headlines under the exposure of Academy of Art University’s spotlight, that was also criticized by the public, would cause an issue.
Depending on the circumstances, if what I created was for an assignment or for my own personal gain; I, as well as my fellow peers, most likely would fight for the right that the first amendment grants to me. If I chose to attend a school, and even participate in citizen journalism then there is no censorship. Although, despite my pride; I know that there is a code of conduct in society in general that government elders wish to keep around.
