I had fish gasping at the surface of the tank very suddenly. This can be attributed to low oxygenation, chlorine poisoning, or ammonia poisoning. My first order of business was a water change. This would lower ammonia levels, introduce more oxygen, and if I fully dosed the tank with dechlorinator with the new water, solve the chlorine issue. It seemed to work.

Within 2 hours they were gasping again. I run a water test. Ammonia is at 0.02ppm which is below average (incredibly good). I can rule out ammonia. Everyone on reddit and fishlore insists its ammonia and dismisses my new belief its an oxygenation issue as a misdiagnosis. I increase surface agitation and introduce more new water. Things get better for another 2 hours then decline again.

Begin further study. Warm water holds less oxygen than cold water. Bacteria rapidly consumes oxygen if starved by low water flow. Plants consume oxygen if the light is too low. I adjust accordingly, lowering temperature, cleaning the filter (HARD), increasing flow, increasing light. This buys 6 hours of no gasping. Certain its an oxygen issue. No one online agrees.

Discover dechlorinator metabolizes oxygen. I’ve been genuinely shooting myself in the foot by following the advise of others.

Remember hydrogen peroxide breaks down into oxygen. Read about hydrogen peroxide use in aquaria. Its a safe-ish disinfectant that does not work well because of how rapidly it breaks down into oxygen. Begin dosing my aquarium with 2 tbsp of hydrogen peroxide every 5 hours. Everything goes back to normal. This was roughly 48 hours of troubleshooting. Through this I lost 1/3 of my fry, and 2 shrimp which is shockingly low for an issue that lasted 48 entire hours

Fish tank troubleshooting is so hard I swear. When its running fine, the chemical and bacterial balances are whatever but as soon as there’s a crisis I have to become a chemist real fast

someone on fishlore linked to their betta care guide website asking for input on accuracy, and 1. yes there are inaccuracies 2. the research is lazy and 3. on closer inspection its a page on a larger website designed to sell the bettas they’re breeding from bedraggled petco fish, and some of the resulting fish for sale are literally described as deformed. and you tell them this is a problem and they tell you to stop poking around the website if you don’t like it.

even. bigger. oof: they list all their fish on the site, and have twelve living now. the five “past bettas” are described as having died from:

“Died from an unlucky, sudden bloat”

“Died from Dropsy”

“Died during the course of an Ich treatment - likely from a secondary infection (Popeye)”

Seeing some misinformation in the tags, thought I’d clear something up (you can cross reference, online forums like fishlore can be especially good) and then just add some burble

- the ‘gallon per inch’ rule of thumb when it comes to fish tank sizes is pretty much useless, ignore it (you can’t keep a foot-long fish in a 12 gallon tank)

- seriouslyfish.com is the best site to find tank size/group size/habitat type/heat settings for fish.

- added to that, neon tetras should be kept in groups of 6 or more, and thus should be kept in a tank bigger than a 5.

- most corydoras species too need tanks of at least 20 gallons, and while they also follow the 5+ rule, I don’t think I’d keep them in groups of less than 8 ever again. smaller species like c. pygmaeus, c.habrous and c. hastatus can be kept in a 10 gal, but length is always more important to these guys than height.

- goldfish are probably the most abused fish in the hobby, with bettas coming in a second. even fancy goldfish require larger tanks, and the common goldfish like you’d get at the fair can grow to over a foot long

- bettas should be kept in a 5 gallon tank standard, some people say 3 gal minimum, and 10 gallons is even better. Remember that these fish breathe air via the labyrinth organ and need an inch or so of humid air above the watersurface that they can access.

- sponge filters (an airline powered by an air pump and fed through a sponge) is the best kind of filter for betta tanks. rough filtration can tear a betta’s fins, which can lead to fin rot and death. (also, you can use one large air filter and use an airline splitter to run multiple sponge filters for multiple tanks, making it much cheaper than individual hang-on-back/canister/internal filters)

- note as well that the filter’s main purpose is to hold the nitrifying bacteria for the tank. you should ‘cycle’ your fish tank before you put anything living in it (you can find out how to do this online) - I’m forever annoyed that pet shops just say ‘leave the tank for three days then put a fish in’ because no. Also, fish-in cycling is cruel. don’t do it.

- bowls are bad because of the curved surface of the glass, but also because there is less surface area for gas exchange at the top; oxygen stones via an airline can improve gas exchange (sponge filters also do this)

- fuller-finned bettas, like double-finned and dumbo bettas, can also manage in smaller tanks (3 or 5) better than the more streamlined bettas like plakats and dragon bettas. I’d hesitate to put a plakat in a 5, but I’d be happy with a dumbo in a 5. They’re also more susceptible to fin damage with aggressive filters.

- YMMV on betta temperament. Some of them will allow other critters in their tank with them, others will hunt snails and peck at their antenna when they dare to come out, so keep an eye on any neighbours you put in with your betta to make sure they aren’t suffering

- likewise, if you have your bettas in a communal set up, make sure that the other fish aren’t fin-nipping the betta - remember that bettas generally swim slower and are less agile than smaller fish like tetras or barbs. choose your other fish carefully.

- rough decor can tear bettas fins; if you aren’t sure if your plastic decor is suitable, try the ‘stocking test’ - if it snags or ladders a pair of stockings pulled over the decor, it could do the same to your betta

- the ‘bettas live in small amounts of water’ thing comes from the fact that they can be found in small divots of water in rice paddies; the issue with that is, the water levels where they’re found rise and fall seasonally, so while they can live in small amounts of water for a little while (thanks labyrinth organ!) they are also used to living in more suitable bodies of water.

- there ARE fish that can live in 3 gallon tanks; killfish are an example that come to mind, however, most of these fish are delicate and more suitable for keepers with a little more experience.

- remember that you need to do water changes to handle the build up of nitrate’s in your tank (the ammonia levels caused by food matter and fish waste will be neutralised by the nitrites and they in turn by the nitrates, which need to be removed via water changes) and 1 gram of pollution in 3 gallons of water does more damage than 1 gram of pollution in a larger volume - this is why larger tanks are actually better for beginners; a 20 gal is a good size to start with

- if you REALLY NEED a tiny tank (0.5 to 3 gallons), you may have more luck looking at reef tanks/saltwater. check out pico tanks on the reef fish forums. the learning curve there IS steeper, you have additional levels to maintain (salinity for example, others if you want to keep stony corals) but you can keep certain types of anenome, coral and even some tiny invertebrates in pico tanks - no fish though

- if you’re in the US, you’re lucky enough to have the ‘dollar per gallon’ sale at Petco, which, I’m told, is exactly what it sounds. I hate you (I don’t, I’m just seething in jealousy)

- folks in the UK, diversa on eBay have good prices for basic ‘glass box’ tanks, but I’ve had them deliver shattered glass to me before, so keep an eye on that.

- in the end though, the best piece of advice I could give is to do your research before you buy, and to research on forums. Don’t trust the word of websites* giving careguides, read as many posts from as many keepers about the fish/set up you want as possible, and then make your decision (because if you thought fan discourse was drama, wait until you see the arguments about tank sizes)
