In 1951 Le Corbusier embarked on his „aventure indienne“, his Indian adventure, to design and build Chandigarh, the new capital of the Punjab. On February 20 he boarded a flight to Bombay together with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and on February 23 the two met up with the players to be involved in the project: Maxwell Fry, engineer P.L. Varma as well as government official P.N. Thapar. At the time of their arrival at the designated site of the future capital it was a wide plain dotted with numerous villages and lush vegetation. On the same day Le Corbusier began writing and drawing in his so-called „Album Punjab“, a notebook he would continue to fill until March 11 and which today represents a unique source to the events, ideas and impressions preceding the design and construction of Chandigarh. The „Album Punjab“ has recently been published for the first time as a facsimile by Lars Müller Publishers and is accompanied by a volume written by Maristella Casciato providing additional context to LC’s commission, unpublished photographs taken by Pierre Jeanneret during the trip and a day-by-day synopsis of the notebook. Already the first entry tells of Corbusier’s deep interest in the existing landscape and villages, their scale and density as well as the daily life going on. At the same time he also began to search for solutions regarding water supply, spatial approaches to climate control and air circulation in residential buildings as well as he sketched a road system for the future capital and its capitol complex. Consecutively Le Corbusier elaborated these initial impressions and sketches and delved into the local architecture, the spatial organization of traditional houses and already drew planimetric arrangements of low-cost housing units. In terms of the overall urban planning LC harked back to the Pilot Plan he developed for Bogotá together with José Luis Sert. A pressing issue that also came up during the trip were construction costs and the high cost of wood which made the use of concrete even more appealing. In view of the far-reaching insights the book provides it is an important addition to the literature on Le Corbusier and highly recommended!

Fanfic Menu Challenge
"By all accounts, Miss Madison, you're in perfect health."
Margo was an engineer, not a doctor. Looking at the x-rays and blood test results, it did appear as if she was fine. But Margo knew her body. She knew when something was wrong. In the small doctor's office of the flight surgeon, she crossed her arms and stared him down. "Check again."
It had started exactly three months ago. At the time, Margo thought it had been stress: Lenara Catiche had been announced as the new director of Roscosmos, with her predecessor, Sergei Nikulov, nowhere in sight. Polite enquiries to Star City had remained unanswered. The concern over Sergei had led to many sleepless nights, many uneaten dinners. But Margo had put her concern to one side: she'd see him at the next IAC conference, no doubt; he was probably working on something top-secret, like the Mars mission or a probe to Ganymede. Nothing to worry about.
But then she'd developed a cough. Pain in her chest. Pain in the small of her back. The second she'd coughed up blood in front of Emma, Margo had been booked in for a litany of medical tests.
The flight surgeon sighed. "Miss Madison, I'm sorry but according to every test we have, there is nothing wrong with you. You're in perfect health. Blood pressure is a little high, but—"
"—so what causes the pain? The coughing up blood?"
He shook his head. "I'm sorry, Miss Madison. We can run some more tests but they'll come back exactly the same."
Margo was used to getting answers. Used to working the problem and finding a solution. She left the flight surgeon's office unsettled, uncertain as to what was happening in her own body. Margo had made it off the elevator and three other paces before she was hit with another wave of pain, as if she was being kicked in the side. Brutal blows rained down upon her body and she clutched the wall for purchase. An arm suddenly held her, anchored her. It was only when Margo had been ushered to her office did she realise it was Aleida.
She knelt in front of Margo. Her mouth fumbled for words. "Are you–are you okay?"
Margo nodded, once. "According to the flight surgeon, I'm fine."
"You've been coughing up blood." Margo's gaze snapped to Aleida's. She shook her head. "I saw you, once, in here. It's only me and Emma that know. Are you sure you're okay?"
"I honestly don't know." Margo leant back against one of the chairs in her office. "I could do with a drink. Brandy?"
"Sure."
It had been a while since she and Aleida had just sat and talked. Aleida had been so occupied with the Mars mission; Margo had been overwhelmed by what had happened in London, the engine designs, now all this. It was good to talk: to hear bout Javi and Victor and Octavio. Margo filled in a few gaps that Emma hadn't divulged, with the latest addition of the flight surgeon's findings. According to him, there was nothing wrong with Margo Madison. Margo thoroughly disagreed.
Aleida rolled the glass between her palms. "Can you go see a specialist?"
"I can find someone but if the press got hold of it? Undermining my own flight surgeon?" Margo sighed. "But I looked at the scans, Aleida. The blood tests. The ultrasound. There's nothing there."
Aleida paused, thought, then laughed to herself. Margo stared at her, wondering what about her condition was so amusing. She eventually divulged what she found so funny. "No, no, it's not funny. Not at all. I was just thinking of this friend from high school, Lara; I crashed on her couch for a while. She was obsessed with fables and fairy tales – the really old ones where people were turned into sea foam and wore iron shoes. She told me all about this story where these two people were meant to be together and they were torn apart and the only way they knew the other was still alive was because they could feel the other person's pain." Aleida took a mouthful of her drink. "It's ridiculous, I know. Just trying to work the problem and my brain went there."
Margo stared at the bottom of her brandy glass. Fairy tales and fables. Ridiculous. But she thought about Sergei's disappearance from Roscosmos. She thought about the noose around his neck in London and how, in that moment that had felt like an hour, she had struggled to breathe. It was insane. She wasn't a fairy princess who needed a kiss from her true love and Sergei wasn't going to climb a castle wall or fight a dragon or wake her up from a glass coffin. Margo had rarely indulged in the idea of romantic love, let alone the concept of soulmates. But—
"What if it was true?" Aleida laughed again until she saw the sombre expression on Margo's face. "What if the person I love is being tortured on a daily basis by the KGB and I can feel every single time they hurt him? What do I do with that?"
Oh God, Sergei. What are they doing to you? To us?

DC 1956: Showcase: Finally, the good stuff
This is Showcase #4, the comic book that created the Silver Age. Welcome to the Gutters.
Tumblr media
DC Showcase was created as an anthology series to try out concepts that could eventually be developed into full series, and by god did it sell some concepts. At least sixteen new characters were created for DC Showcase and probably a dozen more were spun out into solo titles after their appearance in this book. Not all of them were hits, but the Flash was a success to the point that it changed the whole superhero genre.
The original Flash was created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert. His name was Jay Garrick, a student who gained superhuman speed in a lab accident. He had a sick winged helmet and a respectable career, both solo and in the Justice Society of America, and then faded once the superhero boom died down. In the 1950s, Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino produced what they considered to be a "revision" of that concept.
Tumblr media
The origin story feels like a remix of the original. In the Golden Age, Jay Garrick was just a guy who got superpowers by the combination of taking a nap in an unventilated room full of chemicals and the healing power of cigarettes. He was a scientist just as an excuse to get him into a room where the superpower generator was. That was pretty common in the golden age and early silver ages, where a character's professional life was just an excuse to facilitate superhero adventures.
The new Flash, Barry Allen, is a scientist first. He's not just somebody who occasionally does science, he is a man with the worldview of a scientist and uses it as the basis for his character. He's far more a scientist than Clark Kent is a journalist or Bruce Wayne is a parasite on the working class. He still gets splashed by thousands of chemicals and decides to just walk it off, but that's because this was the 1950s.
Similarly, the character's origin is also expanded on with a greater degree of realism. For the time, at least. "Lightning struck my shelf of every chemical" is pretty hokey today, but it is marginally more realistic than the golden age version. It's also surprisingly more of an evergreen origin than premises based on radiation, genetic engineering, or quantum mechanics, which seem to always need to be updated every few decades.
Tumblr media
Another aspect of Barry Allen's character as a scientist is that he is naturally skeptical of what he sees. He has a rationalist viewpoint, and if he encounters some extraordinary phenomenon, he will go towards the simplest possible answer before leaping towards any comic book solutions. "Seeing weird shit after getting struck by lightning and covered in chemicals? ...yeah, that makes sense, actually, I'm lucky to be alive. Good thing this plate of franks and beans will sort me out."
Tumblr media
Barry doesn't clue in to the fact that superpowers are happening until he literally sees a bullet moving so slowly that it takes the width of the page to get anywhere. I just want to applaud the artwork in this issue. Not only is Barry drawn with the most ridiculous "gee golly willickers, what in the name of midwest conservatisim is heckity happening here?" faces whenever his speed vision kicks in, but the way the panels indicate the extreme time dilation in the flight of the bullets is just perfection.
Tumblr media
Another great aspect in this comic is that Barry doesn't just decide to become the Flash out of the goodness of his apple pie American heart. He's in a world where Jay Garrick's flash is just a comic book character, and he's a fan. He's of the right age where he might have been reading the old comic books and pretending to be the flash, zooming around the yard with a saucepan on his head. This comic is one of the first books to blatantly fish for the nostalgia market.
Tumblr media
I also want to talk about his costume for a minute. I'm actually more a fan of the golden age look. The way the red is broken up by the blue and the helmet with little wings that make him look like Hermes, those are just so good. They probably could have kept it. But the golden age version just looked like ordinary clothes, and this Flash has a costume that is unmistakably superheroic.
Personally I would love to see the process that Carmine Infantino went through designing this character. Nowadays, it's absolutely iconic but it goes against the grain in a lot of subtle ways. For example, he's athletic but has the body of a runner, not a solid wall of beef. He doesn't wear a cape or big superhero underpants, the design is almost minimalistic, but what elements are there are stylized to reinforce the concept. He wears a mask, but the eyes and mouth are open so that he looks friendly and cheerful but not intimidating. A design like this must have taken dozens of attempts to get right.
Tumblr media
The story for this issue is surprisingly good, considering that the antagonist is called the Turtle Man and his gimmick is being the Slowest Man Alive. Turtle Man himself is a remix of a Jay Garrick foe called the Turtle, and they have the same gimmick. It's not just that they're slow, it's that they're careful, meticulous even. Turtle Man counts on the Flash moving too fast and getting in over his head. One of his plans is just to paint a picture of himself on a wall and letting Flash run straight into it, and it works.
I mentioned in one of my other posts how sometimes it feels incongruous how physics applies to superpowers. Like how Superman can literally dig a hole to China, but can't use any of his powers to get rid of all the dirt. Brandon Sanderson once wrote that a character's limitations are more interesting than their abilities. If you have somebody who can do a million impossible things well, like Superman, any limitation you impose is going to feel artificial. If one power has a limitation, surely they have another power that can negate it.
Flash works better as a straight up Superhero, because he can't do a million impossible things well, he can do one impossible thing very well. If you shoot Superman with a bullet, he doesn't worry at all, but Flash can't just let that bullet bounce off of him. If you fly away from Superman, he can just fly after you, Flash is stuck on the ground until he works out a clever solution.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this story basically invented the silver age. The narrative beats for the Flash's superhero origin are still the same beats being used in origin stories to this day. There's a philosophy at work to ground his powers in real science, to the point that the comic even includes a fun little edutainment page about how relativistic velocities increase mass and cause time dilation. Most importantly, the character of Barry Allen is a genuine character with heroic attributes and realistic flaws that can drive him to adventure or get in his way. It's a very sparse characterization compared to what would come later, but it's a world apart from other heroes who exist as props to hang a cape on.
Anyway, that brings us to the end of 1956. I think I need to take a minute and reassess how I'm doing things. I've already read these comics before, so this is mostly a refresher from my hypothetical notes, but it's definitely taking a toll on me. It doesn't help that this is a very slow moving era for comics. You could pick up a Superman issue from 1949 and 1959 and they would read largely the same. Hopefully things pick up soon. Until next time.

What's it like traveling with their child? Are they good on planes or do they cry? Where would they take them?
Seated in the tub, let’s go!
It’s adventurous, depends on age ofc. First months driving - constant crying and one of dads has to be on the backseat (usually Jan, so he talks to the baby and they fall asleep later). Thankfully, soft noise of driving engine will make the baby sleep in seconds, esp on longer drives outside of Ljubljana.
First of all, I don’t think they would fly with parents so early. But, on the plane they will usually sleep with occasional cry „ati/papi, give attention”. The older the toddler is, the more solutions dads will find to entertain the child. (We all know, treating Nace’s tattoos as free coloring book is the main solution here, so at the end of the flight the sleeve will be magically colorful). I don’t imagine the child getting iPad so early, maybe when they get a bit older they would get one hour on Nintendo Switch.
The last question - basically everywhere, where they want to spent quality family time. First of all - driving around Slovenia and wherever in the car’s reach. If needed - flying to uncle Jere (with mandatory North Pole trip!) or auntie Alessandra (or basically anyone from ESC23 family). I don’t think the child will be dragged on tours - when JO is touring, daycare/kindergarten+staying at family’s is a must.
Tldr; adventurous family, wanting to show their child how beautiful the world is.

When the SR-71 was getting low on gas, its crew members pressure suits started to warm up. So aboard the Blackbird the fuel was used as a heat sink. Here’s how.
SR-71 Blackbird crew members have said that they sometimes came down looking for a tanker, not so much because they were running out of gas but because their gas was getting too hot.
My Dad, Colonel Richard “Butch” Sheffield, SR-71 Blackbird Reconnaissance Systems Officer (RSO), wrote in his unpublished book “The Very First” that when they were getting low on gas in the SR-71, Blackbird crew members pressure suits started to get a little warm up. By contrast bringing on new fuel cooled them down. Aboard the SR-71 the fuel was used as a heat sink.
Everything about the SR-71 was complex yet incredibly engineered, so they have to find a way for the Blackbird to deal with the enormous amount of heat generated by its high-speed flight.
‘Flying at over Mach 3 is a thermal problem. Everything is too hot, including any air you slow down to interact with the vehicle. You are trying to make the vehicle (and the pilots inside) survive for hours in a pizza oven, while they are getting cozy with two 500 million BTU/hour flamethrowers,’ Iain McClatchie, an aviation and turbine engine expert, says on Quora.
When the SR-71 was getting low on gas, its crew members pressure suits started to warm up. So aboard the Blackbird the fuel was used as a heat sink. Here’s how.
Tumblr media
‘When you look at a graph like this, your first impression might be that the vehicle is this glowing hot thing slicing through the icy -52 C air at 80,000 feet. So naturally, you think of the air as cooling the airplane down.
‘Not so much. The air has to change to the vehicle’s speed to touch the vehicle, and that requires work. That work heats the air. At Mach 3.2, the stagnation temperature of the air is 740 F, which is hotter than every (labelled) point on the above graph! (The nacelles around the engine afterburners, unlabelled, are in fact hotter than the air around them.)
‘I know, it seems unbelievable. Use this handy graph and see for yourself.
When the SR-71 was getting low on gas, its crew members pressure suits started to warm up. So aboard the Blackbird the fuel was used as a heat sink. Here’s how.
Tumblr media
‘Basically, the shocks from the airplane heat the air around it, but the vehicle itself cools the air in contact with it down. Once the airplane passes by, all that disturbed air tumbles to a stop, leaving a path of hot air through the upper atmosphere.
‘So back to life in the pizza oven. The basic solution is (a) leave most of the airframe hot and make it out of stuff like titanium and stainless steel that are strong when hot, and (b) start with a large amount of cold fuel, and then dump heat from critical areas into the fuel before burning it. When decoupling from an aerial tanker, half the SR-71’s weight was fuel.
‘A special type of kerosene fuel, JP-7, was developed for the SR-71 to be good as a heat sink. It boils away at 285 C at 1 atmosphere pressure, which is the upper end of the kerosene range. When the plane tanked up at 30,000 feet, the kerosene might start below 0 C. At speed, it would be used to cool the avionics and cockpit, and by the time it arrived at the engine it would get up to 177 C. It was then used as hydraulic fluid for the various engine actuators, primarily the variable geometry nozzle. By the time it got to the fuel injectors it had gotten up to 316 C (but wasn’t boiling because it was at several atmospheres of pressure). At cruise the burner cans were at 330 kPa (about 3.3x the pressure at sea level), so the fuel still didn’t boil as it left the nozzles but the droplets would have evaporated very quickly.’
When the SR-71 was getting low on gas, its crew members pressure suits started to warm up. So aboard the Blackbird the fuel was used as a heat sink. Here’s how.
Tumblr media
McClatchie continues;
‘JP-7 is mostly a mix of hydrocarbons centered around C12H26 (dodecane). The graph above shows the vapor pressure of dodecane as a function of reciprocal absolute temperature. That makes it a bit hard to read. 0.0024, for instance, is 417 Kelvin which is 143 Celsius. Liquids start to boil when their vapor pressure is greater than the ambient pressure. I’ve labelled the boiling point of dodecane at 2900 Pa, which is the absolute pressure at 80,000 feet, and 13000 Pa, which is the minimum absolute pressure in the SR-71 fuel tanks. Note that the dodecane component of JP-7 starts to boil at 162 C at sea level… quite a bit less than the advertised 285 C which is actually when the stuff boils away completely.
‘The flash point of JP-7 is 60 C. The fuel was held in tanks whose walls were formed of the skin of the vehicle. Since fuel vapor against the top skin of the vehicle would be well over 60 C during cruise, if air was allowed in any ignition source in the tank would cause a deflagration and destruction of the vehicle. Instead, nitrogen gas from a 260-liter liquid nitrogen dewar was used to pressurize the tanks. This would have mostly been an issue during descent, when the ambient pressure rose and extra gas was needed to fill the tank ullage space.
‘But nitrogen gas fill was not enough. The fuel was heated in the tank by the bottom surface of the vehicle, just as water in a pot is heated by the flame on a stove. In this case the fluid was over a meter deep in the tank and consequently took longer than a pot does to boil. At ambient cruise pressure the fuel would have begun to simmer in the tanks at 116 C. By pressurizing the tank to 10 kPa over ambient, the tolerable tank temperature rose by 33 C. This temperature limit put a time limit on how long the SR-71 could stay at cruise before it began to lose fuel to boiling.
Blackbird Pilot explains why the SR-71 had to refuel right after takeoff (and it’s not because it leaked fuel)
Tumblr media
‘The fuel pumps in the tanks raised the fuel pressure so that boiling was no longer a problem once in the fuel system. The limit of how much heat could be absorbed by the fuel was rather set by it’s coking temperature — the temperature at which the fuel begins to deposit varnish on the interior of whatever plumbing it is in. I don’t have a specific number on JP-7, but it must be higher than 316 C. There was another experimental hydrocarbon blend developed, called JP-900, which resists coking up to 482 C. This was intended for a higher speed vehicle that was never built.
‘They were not able to get the wind tunnel behavior to match the actual behavior of the airplane. Kelly Johnson speculated that this was because during cruise, the fuel sitting against the lower skin of the fuselage and inner wing kept that portion of the airframe cooler than the upper skin. This caused the vehicle to bow from the differential temperature expansion, which would have made the wings slightly anhedral and would have made the vehicle unstable in roll.’
McClatchie concludes;

‘Heating of the fuel while in the tanks caused yet another problem. As I said earlier, the engines can take the fuel at a maximum temperature of 177 C. So as the fuel in the tanks heats up, it’s ability to absorb heat on the way to the engine decreases. Flight crews have said that they sometimes came down looking for a tanker, not so much because they were running out of gas but because their gas was getting too hot.
‘Using fuel as a heat sink is common in fast jets. The Concorde did it, the F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, and F-35 do it, and probably all other supersonic aircraft.’

How to Find Amazing Flight Deals for Your Next Vacation
Discover expert tips for finding cheap flights. Learn how to use comparison tools, be flexible with dates, and leverage BNPL to book your dream trip on a budget.
Planning a vacation is an exciting experience, but the cost of flights can often feel like a major hurdle. The dream of exploring a new city or relaxing on a distant beach can quickly be overshadowed by the search for affordable airfare. Fortunately, with the right strategies and tools, finding budget-friendly travel options is more achievable than ever. It's all about knowing where to look and how to approach your booking process to maximize savings without compromising your travel dreams.
Be Flexible with Your Travel Plans
One of the most effective ways to save money on flights is to be flexible with your travel dates and even your destination. Flying mid-week, for instance, is often significantly cheaper than flying on a Friday or Sunday. Similarly, traveling during the shoulder seasons—the periods just before or after the peak season—can yield substantial savings on both flights and accommodations. If you have a general desire to travel but aren't set on a specific location, consider searching for deals from your home airport to anywhere in the world. This approach can open your eyes to new, exciting destinations that are also kind to your wallet. An actionable tip is to use flight search engines that have a 'flexible dates' or 'explore' feature to easily spot the cheapest times and places to fly.
Leverage Flight Comparison Tools
In the digital age, you no longer have to visit each airline's website individually to compare prices. Flight comparison websites and tools do the heavy lifting for you, aggregating data from hundreds of sources to present the best available deals. These platforms allow you to compare prices, layover times, and airline ratings all in one place. When looking for the best deals, using a service like cheap o air can help you sort through countless options to find the one that best fits your budget and schedule. Remember to check multiple comparison sites, as some may have exclusive deals or partnerships with certain carriers. For more travel guidance, the U.S. Department of State offers comprehensive information for international travelers.
Consider Alternative Airports
Major international airports are convenient, but they often come with higher price tags. When booking your flight, it's worth checking if there are smaller, alternative airports near your destination. Flying into a secondary airport can sometimes save you hundreds of dollars. While it might require a slightly longer drive or a bus ride to your final destination, the cost savings can be well worth the minor inconvenience. Many budget airlines operate primarily out of these smaller airports, so including them in your search is a key strategy for uncovering hidden gems in airfare. A great tip is to use the 'nearby airports' feature on flight search engines to automatically include these options in your results.
Embrace Modern Payment Solutions
Even with the best deals, the upfront cost of flights can be a significant expense. This is where modern payment solutions like Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) can make a world of difference. BNPL services allow you to book your travel now and pay for it over time in smaller, more manageable installments. This flexibility can be a game-changer, allowing you to secure a great flight deal when you see one without having to pay the full amount immediately. It helps with budgeting for your entire trip, from accommodations to activities. Reputable sources like Forbes have covered the growing trend of using BNPL for travel, highlighting its benefits for modern consumers.
Finding the Right BNPL Service
When considering BNPL for your travel expenses, it's crucial to choose a provider that aligns with your financial goals. Many services come with interest charges or late fees that can add to the overall cost of your trip. However, some innovative apps are changing the landscape. Gerald, for example, is a BNPL and cash advance app that offers completely fee-free services. With Gerald, you can book your travel and pay for it later without worrying about interest, service fees, or late penalties. This approach ensures that the price you see is the price you pay, making it a truly transparent and budget-friendly way to manage your travel costs. By using a service like Gerald, you can enjoy the financial flexibility to book your dream vacation today while staying in control of your finances.
