Fluffbruary - Cat (The Witcher TV)

Somehow and very unexpectedly, a cat snuck into my story at 2:30 in the morning and insisted on being written.

This is the beginning of Chapter 13 (sorry, the rest of the chapter has not been written yet) of "Earned Loyalty", guess Cahir and Gallatin deserve a little fluff after all the whumpy adventures from the previous chapters. For all the cat-lovers among my readers 🐈‍⬛

He wakes up to not only his shoulder aching dully where the arrow had hit him, but also to a strange feeling on his lower legs. Something heavy that is pinning them down. It radiates warmth, though, and he feels damnably cold, almost on the verge of shivering. The warmth is welcome. But what is it? With an effort of will, he forces his eyes open. It is pitch dark in the room. He listens into the silence of the night. Somebody is snoring loudly in the adjacent room, probably one of his soldiers. He can hear a soft, whimpering sound from there, too. Must be one of the children who is having a nightmare. He cannot even blame them. Being held hostage by a band of enemy soldiers must be traumatising and inspire all kinds of bad dreams. Maybe he should not have threatened to wring their necks? They have no way of knowing he would not do anything like this, at least not unless directly ordered by the White Flame. But the White Flame would not order atrocities that cruel unless it is absolutely necessary. Here, it is not.

Suddenly, when he carefully shifts his legs just a little, there is another sound. A low kind of humming. It is not coming from next door but from the foot end of the bed. Slowly, Cahir tries to sit up just a little. It hurts to move his shoulder but he is curious. His eyes have adapted to the darkness by now as much as simple human eyes can and it is possible for him to make out some rough shapes in the moonlight that shines in through the half-open window. There is a big dot of deepest darkness on the blanket where his lower legs and feet are. The sound is coming from there. A big black cat. It must have come in through the window. Maybe it is used to sleeping in this bed and does not care that an injured enemy soldier is occupying it tonight instead of its usual people? The purring is strangely soothing and with a soft groan, Cahir lies back down. A real bed with a mattress, clean blankets and soft pillows. He has missed that. And a fluffy, warm cat on top of it. While Gallatin and his men have to watch and take care of the hostages. They will not get much sleep, let alone in a bed. Maybe having got shot is not that bad after all ...

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

When Gallatin enters the room to check on Cahir as quietly as only an elf can do it, his eyes grow wide with surprise. In the flickering light of his candle, he can see a pair of big golden eyes stare at him. A huge black cat is lying curled up on his deeply asleep friend's feet. It must have snuck in through the window. Gallatin's lips curl into a smile. This is cute. He puts the candle onto the nightstand and sits down on the edge of the bed. The cat yawns and stretches extensively when he starts to ruffle its silky fur. Then it begins to purr so loudly, he is almost afraid it will wake up Cahir. And the young Nilfgaardian commander needs all the sleep he can get after having lost quite a bit of blood. But the injured knight only moves his head a little sideways, in the direction of the elf. Shit, with the candlelight illuminating Cahir's dreamy face, he would have real difficulty to decide who is cuter if he was asked, the cat or the man. Feeling a sudden, strong urge to not only stroke the purring animal but to also run his fingers through the human's curly hair, he stands up quickly. No, he definitely should not do that. 

"Gallatin?" Cahir asks drowsily, roused from his sleep by the elf's abrupt movement. "Anything the matter?"

"Ssh, go back to sleep, friend," Gallatin says, "everything 's fine and under control, don't worry."

"Good," Cahir mutters, closing his eyes again. "'m c-cold," he then adds miserably, shuddering in his semi-sleep.

It is not really cold in the room, a little fresh maybe from the draft from the window. Must be the extensive blood loss, Gallatin assumes. Or is Cahir developing a fever? He walks over to the window and closes it. The cat will hopefully tell them when it needs to get out. Cats are usually quite good and insistent at making their people aware of what they want. Then he returns to the bed to feel Cahir's forehead. It is clammy and cold, not hot. No fever, but his friend has started to shiver badly. 

"Alright, move your lazy, frozen bum over a little," Gallatin says, taking off his boots. "But careful, don't scare the cat."

The cat looks up irritatedly when Cahir stirs to make some room but it does not seem to mind much. It sits up and starts to lick its paw while waiting for the elf to get under the blankets. Still purring, it then leaves its place at the foot of the bed, comes closer and curls up on the pillows right between the two men. It must be used to two people lying under the duvets together - this is a marital bed after all. Gallatin snuggles his face into the cat's fur. Having this fluffy black barrier between them is quite fortunate. Without it, he might have been tempted to do something that he certainly should not. Not while Cahir is injured and hardly conscious. Well, most probably not ever. For it could easily destroy their friendship. But sharing a little warmth with a sick comrade should be okay, Gallatin suspects.

The cat purrs contentedly. It appears to agree.

Here are the final chapters :-) The fic is now complete! Thank you to Fluffbruary's lovely readers and thank you to the @fluffbruary deities for another fun ride via their much-appreciated work on behalf of fandomhood :-) Sherlock and John manage to liberate the correct file about Angel, and as a result Mrs. Hudson strikes an extraordinary bargain with the two runaways in exchange for the details of their escapade. Plus: it turns out there's still a bit more to learn about secrets beyond Angel's creation -- from Mrs. Hudson to John and Sherlock about the essence of secrets, from Sherlock and John (as overheard by Mrs. Hudson's driver), and from Mrs. Hudson, in her last letter to Mr. Thatcher.

Look at me, a wants-to-write-but-blocks-themselves-because-the-first-letter-I-type-down-has-to-be-perfect-fanfic writer.

I've been hoarding various prompt lists like whumptober and fluffbruary. I even snatched myself one of those ironstrange bingo cards in hopes I could fill one of prompts in a year. But now half of the year is over and my card still empty.

I feel like a failure 😞

ah, you've come to the right place. abandon your perfectionism, all ye who enter here. this is a land of unedited drafts, fics written in a haze of hyperfixation, caffeine highs and/or mental breakdowns. i've mastered the art of "good enough".

remember- writing is messy! the process is messy, and the product can be messy too. in a sense nothing people write is ever truly 'finished'- there's always room for improvement. that's how art works, in my humble opinion. try to find enjoyment in the process, not the product. as the artist, your own work will always seem imperfect. but that doesn't make it any less valuable.

it might help to know how i write most of my fics. maybe my method isn't your style, but i'll walk you through it anyway since it might help.

sit down to write. or write standing up. where isn't important. what matters most is you've got an idea or a prompt or an anything that makes you want to write.

word barf. this is the very rough draft phase. throw out everything you know you want to have happen into the doc. try not to read over what you're putting down (the messiness of it all can be daunting). mine often are made up of unfinished sentences, half-baked scene ideas, 'they do x and then y", mixed with some finished portions. if you get stuck, you can always come back, and you'll already have a little something on the page :)

splice and dice. this is where i put my scenes in their order (if they weren't already, it rly depends on what you're writing. sometimes it's linear, sometimes it's not). biggest thing i use this phase for is working out where i need transitions between scenes, where i need to expand my "x then y" bits into writing, and and where i can just put a empty line with a "-" in the center to indicate a new scene.

flesh it out. i get stuck here a lot. this is the step where you weave your scenes together, write your dialogue, fill in your placeholders. it's okay to just skip parts and come back to them. some parts, if they're really giving you trouble, can just be removed entirely. you're the writer- it's up to you. choose your battles.

(optional) editing. sometimes i just don't even bother, especially if i know i'll hate reading what i've written (if this happens to you, it's best to skip the editing! a few mistakes are no big deal. i find it easier to just throw it to the wolves (readers), who are usually very nice and rarely point out mistakes. they're not picky). sometimes editing is just a quick pass for typos. but you can also get into it a little more, really go elbow-deep, and edit to improve things like flow, pacing, tone, and other boring stuff. totally unnecessary, though. if you hate this step? skip it.

it took me maybe a year to feel comfortable enough to post something i'd written. and it's okay, too, if you don't feel comfortable posting anything. you can never post it. or you can do it anyway. sometimes i say to myself, "i want to read more of this specific ship/trope/situation/dynamic/whatever" and i make it myself. they say to write what you want to read, and that's even more true for fanfic. there are people out there who want to read the same things as you. sometimes you gotta look your fear in the eyes, quote Freddie Mercury and say, "I'll fucking do it, darling."

having said that, this might be most important- it's okay if you never post anything you write. fanfic is something we do for fun- there is no failure. the most important thing is to enjoy yourself. there doesn't have to be any finished product- just enjoy the process.

i hope this wasn't too ramble-y or anything. my brain works in strange ways, so this might be totally unhelpful. who knows! but i'll post it anyway, in case it is.

Hey, guys, it's Hyp!! Thanks @lacrow for tagging me and sorry for taking so long to do this, but time is an illusion and it really doesn't feel like 2020 is over even four months in, so let's jump in for some fic appreciation!!

5 - state-sponsored pajama party

I'm not doing it in any special order, so I'm just adding it as I feel needed and I really wanted to start with this little thing!! SSPP was written and posted on the first days of our Discord server so it really brings back memories that go beyond the brainstorming for the writing. Those who are closer to me in the community know that I'm a history nerd, so it's not a surprise that I would write something with real dark aspects of the cold war in which SXF is presented. But I still made it fluffy because fluff is the way to mend all the angst~~

4 - so cold it feels hot

Dear gosh, this fic is an experience lmao'' Crow's secret santa gift was A Ride to make, not only for the pressure of doing something for the ultimate fandom Dad but also because I put all the fluffiness on my bag to this gift. The first part is especially dumb but lowkey steamy and I loved writing it, so it really deserved to feature on the list!

3 - unseen tenderness

Now it's time for my forgotten WIPs oops

For an AU with only one chapter posted, one would assume I don't like it that much, but that's a complete lie. I love the concept of medium Anya and I really, really want to go back to writing more of it. It's just that life and plot bunnies keep getting in the way and I end up neglecting existing works, which is a real shame, really. But fear not, because yhese ideas aren't abandoned!... I'm just busy ;w;

2 - wrong turns (may lead us back home)

This is kinda old but I feel like people still hate me for it lol' So yeah, my take on the Bad End AU. Most of the writers around have their own idea of how it would look like and I take pride in mine to say that, at least, no one dies here. Yep, I know it's not the biggest flex, but whatever. Looking back now, I think there were things that I could have done better to make it closer to what we would see in the manga, but I still really enjoy it. Working with character developments and how certain events mold their personality is one of my favorite things while writing and I love how it was aplied to teenage Anya here. It's just too bad I had to separate Twiliyor for it ;-;;;

(I have plans for a follow-up, but again, me busy and lazy)

1 - forged papers and other discrepancies

The last and my all-time fave is one more for the neglected AU list, which I feel deeply guilty because the Papers Please AU is my soul. I love working with both canons to write this, while also expanding the created universe with fanon countries (Lacrowia citzens, where are you at?!). It is a gloomier and more serious work than the usual fluffy angst, but it's one of my attempts to show the potential of world-building in a manga like SXF. The politics, the history, the characters; they all deserve so much more depth than we as a small fandom can do (though we are smol but prolific af). With bigger fandoms come bigger problems, but I think it's the price to pay so this universe can get proper attention ❤️

That was all for the highlights of 2020!! The past year was really amazing in terms of fandom content and I'm grateful for having known so many great artists, who are still doing their best in 2021 (Fluffbruary was awesome and AUpril totally is going to be a bang as well, be prepared!!). I'm not tagging anyone this time because I really feel like an annoying bug to make them reflect on last year's works when we're in motherfreaking April from all the months, but!! If anyone who sees this want to shout out about their prides in 2020, feel free to tag me and I'll spread the word myself, because y'all deserve the love.
