realized i never showed off my Mindhacker OC. oopshie
his name is Marigold <3 he's fucked up sick in the head FORMAT is protecting him from himself. they know he's a BUG owner, but they don't want to lose their precious, genius doctor, so they stay silent. we'll see how long that lasts.

i do think that the main reason 更生 in 更生対象 (kousei taishou, reformation target) was translated as reformation instead of rehabilitation is, of course, that "reformation" has "format" in it.
however, a thought i had recently is that the word "rehabilitation" would not fit in the context of mindhacks. rehabilitation usually implies a kind of prolonged care to help a patient get better, gradually. mindhacks are the opposite - they are instantaneous. they don't fix the problem, they erase it entirely (what com_z was talking about by the way). just thought this was interesting enough to post about it

I SWEAR ON MY FAVORITE SONG
THAT MINDHACK IS GOOD, CHAPTER 5 JUST GOT RECENTLY RELEASED, BUT I NEED MORE
HOW FORMAT ACTS TOWARDS MC/DOCTOR, THE START OF THE GAME, OUR FIRST PATIENT, THE SECOND, THE THIRD.... EVERY CHAPTER GOT ME WANTING EVEN MORE
The background of the characters, what led to their crimes, what WE do, how WE reshape THEM, every dialogue, every action, every interaction, all designs, all the music, EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT IN MY OPINION.
I WANT TO MUCH TO RANT ABOUT IT BUT IM LEAVING THE EXPERIENCE TO YOU, I SWEAR MIMDHACK IS GOOD
"MindHack! Good for the body, good for the soul!"
(MARKETABLE PLUSHIE ANON QUESTIONING IF IM SICK OR IM JUST HAVING ""ALLERGY"" FROM BEING TIRED(spoiler, I been like this for days already))
gbifff OKAY ILL TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT MAYBE ME AND MY SIS WILL PLAY IT LATER NOGNG we play all games together <3
(PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR OMG??)

once again thinking about how well the first three chapters of mindhack are structured in the context of the reformation targets.
unid introduces the player to the game - he starts acting aggressive, which shows that the facility treats dangerous criminals and gets the player in the mindset somewhat; but then it becomes clear that most of his crimes are mild and that the greatest crime he commited was an accident. and, well, that he became the way he is because of childhood trauma. all of this puts seeds of doubt into the player's mind. he is also used to show how mindhacks work - with him having the most successful recovery (for now at least).
ivrig is the token relatable character - he is the youngest and has by far the easiest problems to relate to - all of that jazz about envy, college, not being seen for who he is. i think this is one of the reasons i see him being popular among younger fans who might struggle with the same issues. basically he is there to make the player doubt mindhacks even more, as the player learns how utterly miserable his mental health is. and then he gets completely broken because of a hack... as someone who's known this game since 2021, that twist deeply surprised me, because the game was always advertised as "reshape criminals into happy people!". not lying when i say i did not see that twist coming!
then there is sino, who introduces the player to the concept of BUG variants and talks a lot about the fatal error. through their words we also find out more about the sweep operation 10 years ago. so basically, once the player got acquainted with what mindhacks are, vodkademo? throw in a character to infodump some important lore. obviously doing such infodumps wouldn't have worked in chapters 1 or 2. and the medium of hacks changes for this chapter - doctor hacks destroys a soul inside a floppy disk instead of a soul in a physical body. adds some variety to the story.
i feel like small observations like this definitely expose realkey as a powerful writer who knows how to structure their story. yeah, mindhack is a short VN. but that's not a bad thing in the slightest. they just cram all of the important shit in and don't leave any long expositions or filler episodes.
i'm unsure how COM_Z fits into this progression yet. they definitely tell even more about the lore, and especially about FORMAT, who the player proooobably has grown suspicious of by chapter 4.

hello peer! i am here to use askbox for some other deed than asking
1. sorry if my directly referring to Rebecca as she/her has made you uncomfortable or something. i deleted that tag silently and i will pay more attention to the usage of pronoun
2. as i remembered there sure is a blog about translation that mentioned Rebecca considered themself they/them but is okay with any pronoun but i couldnt find it rn. im fully aware and support Rebecca as nb but i assume it's okay to use other pronouns
3. felt like notifing you that i seem to always drawing Rebecca in a more-feminine-than-official way (idk if you noticed it). very much hoping you don't mind that
that's all i want to say to you. sorry again for any unhappiness, if there is any. have a nice day!
hello there!!!
I don't know where to begin. i guess i am super surprised to get this ask, because i wasn't referring to anyone in particular when i made that post. whenever i post something i am usually just speaking out loud, sharing thoughts. for a while i wasn't even aware that my #peer mindhack tag is visible in the #mindhack tag. but when people I didn't know started liking my posts i realized "well then, i guess my brainrot was visible to everyone this whole time?". so I'M SO SORRY if you had to read any of that 🥲 ..
i am more careful with what i write in the tag now.
second of all, when i said "gendered words", i only referred to gendered nouns, i.e. words like girl/boy, woman/man, queen/king and so on. basically, nouns that have a gender connotation. pronouns can be completely separate from nouns for some people.
what I'm getting at, is that in that post i wanted to joke about the fact that even format was called a woman or a she (the japanese word can mean both depending on context) by the devs, but rebecca only got gender neutral nouns. i distinctly remember that before the dev blog confirming rebecca as nonbinary was released, there were no hints at her gender except her feminine name. that is so cool to me, because this means that she was nb from the start!! thus, for me personally, it feels wrong to use gendered nouns, considering even the devs avoided the usage of them (though i guess it's easier in japanese). everyone else is free to use whichever words they want! a lot of nb people would be fine with gendered nouns, i myself am fine with most of them. and to begin with, captain is a fictional character, so anyone is free to do/headcanon whatever they want.
by the way, that blog says "rebecca views herself as nonbinary she/they, but is fine with any pronoun". so using she is completely fine. i mean, even the characters in game use that pronoun, haha.
(and i am also aware that some cultures don't even have a developed concept of a third gender, and that not all fans will be able to recognize rebecca's identity in the first place, and it is not their fault because they didn't choose where they were born. imagine living in russia, couldn't be me am i right?)
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding... i really like your art when i see it on my timeline, and reading your thoughts. and knowing that there are other english-speaking fans is always nice. I don't mind the way you draw rebecca either, it's a nice stylization. you are not in the wrong in the slightest. i was moreso just speaking aloud, and i tried to explain my point of view in this reply.
it is true that i can sound aggressive or defensive when i talk about nonbinary fictional characters, so i understand if my posts sound like that. but i believe that my opinion, in the end, is just an opinion, even if i express it in a forceful way, and it shouldn't impact other people's way of living. do whatever you want, i will continue to like your art and posts either way. i hope you have a nice day too.
