Nautilus Cenoceras inornatum Fossil – Lower Bathonian, Jurassic: Burton Bradstock, Dorset, UK – Alice Purnell Collection – COA
This exceptional fossil belongs to the extinct species Cenoceras inornatum, a nautiloid cephalopod from the Lower Bathonian Stage of the Middle Jurassic, approximately 167 million years old. It was discovered at Burton Bradstock, a renowned fossil-rich site along the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, UK.
Cenoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid, related to modern-day nautiluses. These marine creatures possessed a coiled external shell and are often found in marine sedimentary rocks. Unlike their ammonite relatives, nautiloids such as Cenoceras inornatum had simpler suture patterns and a central siphuncle for buoyancy control, allowing them to navigate the ancient seas with ease.
This fossil is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, known for its meticulously curated and scientifically significant specimens. The fossil has been expertly prepped and cleaned, revealing the details of its chambered shell structure—making it a desirable specimen for collectors and fossil enthusiasts.

#2498 - Crassostrea ingens - Giant Oyster
Tumblr media
A giant oyster species, with shells exceeding 30cm in length, that was abundant in shallow seas around New Zealand 2.5 million years ago. Despite the age, many of the fossils still have a reddish-purple mark where the adductor muscle was attached.

5.5" Dorsetensia complanata Ammonite Fossil – Middle Bajocian, Jurassic: Sherborne, Dorset, UK – Alice Purnell Collection – COA
This well-preserved fossil is a prime example of Dorsetensia complanata, an extinct species of ammonite from the Middle Bajocian Stage of the Jurassic Period, dating back approximately 170 million years. This specimen was discovered in the fossil-rich strata of Frogden Oborne, near Sherborne, Dorset, UK, a location renowned for its contributions to British paleontology.
Ammonites, ancient marine cephalopods, were free-swimming molluscs related to modern-day squid and cuttlefish. They possessed a coiled external shell divided into chambers, which they used to control buoyancy in the ocean. Dorsetensia is characterised by its moderately compressed shell and distinct ribbing, making it both scientifically and aesthetically significant.
This particular specimen is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, a historic compilation of high-quality fossil material. It has been expertly cleaned and prepared, ensuring the detailed morphology is clearly visible—ideal for collectors, educational display, or scientific study.

Ammonite Fossil Coaster Pattern!
Tumblr media
Finally got the pattern to a nice state, so I'm posting it as promised! This pattern should be easy for anyone with an understanding of double crochet and upwards types of stitches! Feel free to use, and if you really really like it you can drop a few buckaroons in my kofi here, but again this is free! I don't feel comfortable charging money for any patterns I make, at least not yet lol.
I even learned how to make a cute fancy pdf for it!
