CURRENTLY READING: MARCH 2025
Voyage of the Damned by Frances White
Full disclosure, I don't expect to enjoy this. I might even end up doing a live blog of it, considering the synopsis online says it's a tiktok book. I didn't actually choose this book, when you subscribe to Illumicrate you can't skip the first box and this was my first box. Regardless it IS pretty and I do have someone to give it to when I'm done, so I'll give itthe best chance I can.

Everytime something happens in France in a comic, I realize how little researches comics writers do. And like, if they are this bad with my western country, how bad it is with third-world countries they talk about???
In Nightwing (2016), Raptor is from a circus that was near Paris during Mary Grayson's childhood, so more than 40 years ago at least.
In this flashback, they accuse the mayor of Paris of having given leprosy to the romani and of keeping away the meds they need. Already, with our healthcare's system, it's hardly possible, as they would be able to go to a hospital to get the help they need. Do they think "public healthcare" means the state has a direct control on medication, because that's not the case at all. The French gov control the money put into medication, how much is bought, but a mayor has no power over this. I just don't understand how something like this could happen. You can totally write a racist medical scandal in France, but makes it make sense with our system.
But also, Paris didn't have a mayor until 1977, so if it's before 1977, impossible. And, Paris' mayor from 1977 to 1995 is JACQUES CHIRAC, who was the PRESIDENT after. They wrote a story implying that a French President kept medications away from sick people, was discovered and was still elected President. And, yes, the French government is far from good and they have deeply harmed the romani, but like, maybe don't write shit like that. (Also, Chirac was really against the war of Iraq, and stood up against the US, which France is still paying the price for to this day. So I don't really like an USAmerican to criticize Chirac. Like, we can do it, others can do it, but not USAmericans, y'all have done enough) I'm pretty sure that wasn't the goal of the writers. No, what happen is that they didn't do researches about Paris' mayor and so, wrote that shit.
This may be inspired by the contaminated blood's scandal in the 80s-90s, which was worst in France, but no mayor was found guilty, it was doctors who knowingly contaminated patients with a deadly illness. And the French government was held accountable, even if they had no hand in it, as a matter of principle.
I understand it's a fiction, and they didn't literally wrote "Chirac did this", but it's kind of clumsy. (Especially because of everything I wrote earlier about Chirac's politics and how the US is still punishing France for being against killing civilians and destroying Iraq. France was doing the right thing, and the US worked so France would go back in line and treat Arabs like shit. Do not think western countries are free from the US' imperialism)
And in no way I'm saying that you cannot write France being awful, I know my gov's crimes (rn, they have deported homeless out of Paris for the Olympics, the President is refusing to acknowledge the left won the elections and to take a leftist prime minister so we have no prime minister since mid July and fuck democracy I guess, they support Israel's crimes against humanity, and are behaving like the colonizers that they are in New-Caledonia, sending the armies against the Kanaks that have not enough power on their own land), I'm just saying it should at least be believable enough to work. (Easiest way: make the cops racist. Boom. Also, French cops talk like vilains, it's insane.) And also, not about someone touchy like clumsily painting badly a president that was punished by the US for doing the right thing.

#my fanfiction recommendation column
forget (me not) by atergIo
james t. kirk / s'chn t'gai spock
Finding TOS fanfiction that I would actually like turned out to be a much bigger quest than I could have imagined... There are many reasons for this, but apart from my subjective preferences and how I personally perceive TOS (which rarely coincides with the views of others), TOS is actually an interesting multi-layered thing that is more difficult to work with than my fav AOS (where objectively there are fanfics that work much better with the source material than the reboots themselves), and I often just rewatch episodes or read meta-analyses. But there are a few things that are truly wonderfully subtle and remain fond memories in my heart.
This was the first TOS fanfic that I really liked and which will be the first TOS-thing in this column, and it's really, really good. It's a small, very intimate, ending-explanation episode of the events after Requiem for Methuselah (probably one of the best episodes for thinking about "what happened next" because it was very ambiguous). And it's a really great interpretation of the events after that, one that works well with the original and stays very much in character. A kind of quiet, tender watercolor sketch.
As always, a few (almost non-spoiler) quotes:
Spock was different tonight. As if something was haunting him, something lingered at the edges of his edges; a reflective slant to his brow, a reserved set to his mouth, a rigidity in his frame. Jim could not ease the tension in his face with a questing finger to the divot between his eyebrows, would not dare touch Spock so intimately, and so he tried to ease it with his words.
A guilt derived from its lack, a conscience that was doubly burdened.
At times this closeness almost hurt, knowing that it was not a reflection of the kind of regard Jim wished for most of all, but simultaneously was cherished as the gift it was. To be allowed even this much of the man Spock was, was something he could not have foreseen, was more than he could have dreamed when he came aboard the Enterprise for the first time.
Spock finally looked at him. And it was somehow worse than when Spock had not. His eyes were tortured in a way he had rarely seen and never liked, this twisted proof that his friend felt just as deeply if not more than himself.
McCoy sighed again. "Maybe it's just bitterness. And frustration. Seeing him turn away from this, stubbornly thinking he has to handle this by himself. Watching him inflict more pain upon himself instead of asking for help. He's as bad as you.”
"And- you have to know that you're irreplaceable." The "to me" went unsaid, but he hoped that Spock had heard it regardless.
"My first officer. My best friend." And almost lover, his mind provided unhelpfully.
Spock was his most impossible desire, and to not desire him, impossible.
"Spock, what difference?" His hands gripped Spock’s arms. Spock's eyes opened and Jim froze, shocked into stillness, letting go without realizing. The brown depths held such sorrow, and such grief, and such- longing. "She could have you," Spock whispered, "if only for a moment, she could have you. Choose you. As I never can.
Was loving him so painful, so undesirable? The hurt morphed into an anger he could not silence.
Jim fought the urge to let his thumb caress the sharp jaw bone laying underneath skin. There's nothing I want more than your love, he wanted to say. Spock's breath hitched, and Jim swallowed, knowing Spock had heard that thought.
The coolness of Spock’s skin against his was calming; the cheekbone beneath his thumb smooth and sharp, the softness of the hair at his forehead ticklish. He had rarely seen Spock's eyes so close, the soft creases of the lightly colored lids, his long eyelashes that Jim now wished to count. He inhaled as Spock exhaled, exchanging breaths easily, naturally, with the sort of synchronization that felt both cultivated and predestined. Each second that passed he shamelessly took in a part of Spock, adding it to a mental mosaic of this moment.
Even the things we regret or don’t particularly like about ourselves are part of us. They provide us opportunities to reflect and grow, when given enough time and patience.
“It is a thirst. A flower, dying in the desert.” A brief moment of freedom- of humanity- thought, hope, aspiration, emotion, hers. A mere moment, a fleeting dream of choice. Now, there was only despair, heavy, pulling him down like an anchor into the blackness of the sea.
Rayna’s fingers first touched Jim’s lips, and then her own. With an innocent gesture that was surely coincidentally analogous to something so longed for, his hopes were cruelly crushed anew- “Impossible. Impossible from the beginning”- always, always impossible- “I can’t love her… but I do love her”- excruciating pain, numb jealousy, habitual after so many years, dulling his senses to the pain- “She loved you, Captain”- a small, sad smile, empathy that would swallow him whole- his hands on the piano, while her hands were - a scatter of images, a ferocity of feeling he had never felt.
I know, Spock started simply, after an odd spike of suffocating sadness that Jim registered as coming not from himself but Spock, because she loved you. Because I love you. And I would rather be forgotten than cause you pain.
He didn't want to forget- he wanted to remember Spock, always, no matter the price.

Y'all are so STUPID it goes beyond just hate.
