that new wikipedia picture for rudolf made me curious about the rest of the website it came from (i recommend this website if you like the habsburgs at all. there's sooooo much) and i'm finding such treasures that i have never seen before. i'm just putting them here

"queen elisabeth in hungarian coronation robes," painting from 1899 by Emil Wünsche, oil on canvas . i've been looking for coronation paintings/pictures/anything for a whileee so this was such a cool find.

on the topic of Wünsche's paintings, there's this one of franz joseph from 1899 as well:

and another FJ, this time a lithograph. correct me if i'm wrong, hungarian speakers, but i do think both the hungarian and german say "your majesty, franz joseph I, king of hungary." i like the horse here + there's no known artist.

and i just have to show this very pretty portrait of FJ as a young man, dated 1851 by Leopold Kupelwieser:

Franz Josef to Wānaka

The drive from Franz Josef to Wānaka should only take about 4 hours, but you know me - I managed to almost double that for my travel day. I got on the road shortly after 10 AM, making my first stop at Bruce Bay for some coffee and a lemon sugar crepe. The scenery was beautiful and the coffee and food hit the spot, but gosh those sandflies. This keeps happening to me where I have the bug spray with me, but I forget to put it on? So I got a few bites while I ordered my coffee and crepe, then as they were making it, I ran to the car to apply the repellant so that I could actually sit and enjoy the view.

After stopping at Bruce Bay, I headed to do the Munro Beach walk. It's a 1.5 hour return to get to the beach, where I ended up sitting and soaking in the ambiance for about 45 minutes (while I let my shorts dry from venturing too far into the water!).

From the walk, I hit scenic point after scenic point. Here are a few of the highlights: Knight's Point Lookout, Ship Creek, Roaring Billy Falls, Thunder Creek Falls, Fantail Falls, Lake Wānaka Lookout, and Lake Hāwea Lookout. I stopped at the Blue Pools, too, because some folks have said it's still worth walking even though the bridges to see the actual pools are closed. But once I got there and saw that it was another hour return, I decided to skip it. It was already 5:30 and I had been on the road for quite some time! Maybe once the bridges reopen, I'll come back this way.

Once I finally landed in Wānaka, I put my things away in the hostel and headed out to find something for dinner. I got a burrito from this food truck and, even though I was really careful eating it, I still managed to spill some grease from the wrapping on my fall of the patriarchy shirt :( Here's hoping I can get the grease out! I ate dinner down by the lake as the sun went down. It was a stunner of a day!
