Freya struggled to keep herself together after the arranged marriage with Odin. It was a slow drain, taking away little by little at first without anything being noticed. Freya didn’t even realize what was happening until it was too late.
Her arranged marriage, as much as she hated it, was for her people. She wanted to protect them, and if this was the only way (as much as she despised Mimir for even stating the idea) she had to do right by them, no matter the cost of her own identity.
The first grip of her identity came when she had only her Aesir outfits. She went from the wild clothing of her witch wear in Vanir to glamorous dresses and gowns, and warrior armor of Asgard. It didn’t bother her at first, she knew she had to appear as a queen but what she didn’t realize what that this wasn’t a melding of two people; this was about Odin slowly converting her and taking away everything of Vanir within her.
Then came the name change. It started as a cute nickname from Odin within the privacy of their room, but then she realized others were calling her Frigg and Frigga. She tried to express her name was Freya, but when Odin called her Frigg in public, it was what everyone called her. She lost her name at that point. Odin glamorous her with all sorts of Aesir gifts. Trinkets like Circlets for her head, necklaces for her neck, adoring her wings with metal blades and armor of gold. After centuries of this, she no longer fought against it. Even for a time, she enjoyed it a little. Being spoiled by her husband made her smile, she liked the way he gave her little gifts, never asking for anything in return.
She had no idea that it was an ultimate agenda for something more.
There were fewer and fewer guests from Vanaheim, her brother never visited anymore, and her people refuse to period. And she hadn’t realized that even she wasn’t going much of anywhere anymore. More often than not she was adored and loved by the Aesir and the Valkyrie, but she didn’t see a true change among the realms. A small voice in her head told her that none of this was right, things weren’t changing. She knew she had been played, and yet she still tried to bring change between the Aesir and the other realms.
The birth of her son was yet another thing that stole her identity. It wasn’t the birth of her son or her son, but the fate of prophecy that lead her to react in fear and paranoia. Freya had been teaching Odin Vanir magic, hoping if he saw the magic and learned it he might respect her people more, but soon she saw him using it for terrible purposes and knew she had made yet another mistake. And worse when she refused to teach him her ultimate magic tricks, he reacted poorly to it. He turned verbally and physically abusive, and after dealing with such terrible conditions she finally stood up with what she had left.
She took herself and her sword and left, but Odin punished her for it and ripped her warrior spirit and her valkyrie wings from her, locking them in her homeland and then imprisoning her on Midgard.
That was the point she lost everything. The last hint of her identity was her Vanir sword Thrungva. But she had no will to wield it, so it rested on her wall, her memory and hope that maybe… maybe one day she would be whole again.
Freya lost everything when she became Queen of the Aesir due to the abuse of Odin and the manipulations of prophecy and more. Being stripped of everything left Freya broken, and it took years before she felt the ability to stand up and fight again.

Vanir’s fashion and attire are vastly different from that of the Asgardian. Vanaheim’s climate influences the kind of clothing worn by the people and often accommodates the heat and warmth of the planet.
The fabric often used in the making of clothes in cotton, bamboo, silk, and linen. these materials are very breathable and provide comfort and covering. It is also very lightweight without weighing down the person wearing it. Most fabrics are made with cotton and bamboo for everyday life, while silks are often left for special occasions such as festivals and events at temples or weddings. Linen is often seen used for bedding and other uses such as carrying food or items as it’s not only breathable but also has a waterproof capability.
When it comes to fashion, it’s not uncommon to find Vanir wearing clothing that does not cover much skin and allows for air to come through in slits and open spots. While some cultures would see this as promiscuous and unmodest, it is not to the Vanir people. The warmth of the planet is something that must be handled and allowing breezeways through the cloth they wear allows for comfort and less sweating. The more clothing you wear, the more you sweat and dehydrated one can become.
Their fashion is also very flowy, with dresses that breeze in the winds, and very few items are tight fitting. Puffy pants, open wide-end pant bottoms, or loose clothes are all normal fashion. Again, this is a means of comfort and functionality rather than looking to show off.
Another aspect of Vanir culture is the thought of shoes. Most Vanir do not wear shoes, as they are highly connected to the earth, and having shoes it’s disconnecting. In fact, it’s a sign of disrespect to enter someone’s home with shoes on as you are claiming you do not wish to connect and bond with the people of that home. sometimes shoes are called for based on if you are traveling, but these shoes are typically open toes sandals that can be tied around the legs. The shoes should only cover the base of the foot and not much else. The Vanir can feel cold and heat, but they have a sort of immunity to things such as frostbite or foot rot.

Freya’s most noticeable tattoos are visible on her arms, like interweaving wraps that extend from her shoulders down to her wrist. Around her wrist is a long black wrap and then a line down each finger (across her palm) where her fingers are covered in black. and a couple of ring-like lines that connect to the lines. These tattoos were a ritual done to connect her deeply to the realm of Vanaheim and draw her magic and power from it. She’s the only living person connected to the realm after the death of her parents and why she is the most powerful wielder of magic.
However, the tattoos that aren’t seen are the ones covered by her tunic robes.
She has a tattoo on her back that extends from her neck down to the bottom of her back. It’s known as the vegvísir or known as the Compass. Each point has a purpose, these eight mean protection, direction, stability, finding one’s way, making the right decisions, being in control, safety and guidance. She gains the tattoo during the Aesir-Vanir war, after the death of her parents in hopes to do the right thing for her people and to protect them. It extends over her entire back, as she wants to ensure every point of her body is guided in the right form and direction.
She has a small runic tattoo on either side of her ear. The rune is the symbol of Algiz, for protection and support as well as leader and justice, the runic Ansuz.
Her legs also have matching tattoos, which are a reflection of the changing of the moon. From one crescent to the other up her lower legs. She also has some symbols against the top of her foot and on either side of her feet as well.
The last tattoo she has is on her sternum down to her belly button. It looks decorative, but if one looks closely one can find different runic symbols within it as well. The runes of Protection, change, Strength and warrior, Patience and reflection, and more. All these symbols are placed on her to remind her what she fights for and what she protects.

Freya had no idea that Odin was working on a path of creating his Valkyries, not just the ones that had incorporeal forms. All the current Valkyries, minus Freya, have all passed into the afterlife and are strong spirit deities. The thing that Odin was missing what Vanir magic, deep old magic that could bring the Valkyries into Physical Form while retaining their hugr.
Valkyries’ souls are split but in a way that allows them to exist. Their Hamr (physical form) is sacrificed and gives them their wings that rest upon their back. It also allows them to travel from realm to realm. Without their Hamr, they have limitless travel. And then their Hamingja (luck/natural strengths) merge within the Valkyrie Council. All the valkyries have their Hamingja combined to give strength to all of them. This part of the soul is usually passed down to family, but for the Valkyries, it’s what allows them to have enhanced strength and power as they all share these powers.
This is why Sigrun, for example, can use all the powers of the other Valkyries! Most Valkyries prefer to only use a few skills and focus on them, but they are all interconnected.
Valkyries retain their Hugr and their Fylgja (Mind and direction/essence). Valkyries do not forget who they are, this hugr allows them to still feel emotions and have free will. They judge based on what they see in each person. Their Hugr can see other people’s hugr and judge them according. And their Fylgja allows them to travel. While releasing their Hamr allowed limitless travel, their Fylgja allows them to still have direction and purpose to know where to go. They don’t just wander, they know where to go and how.
Odin had the struggle to create his Valkyries because forcing a Valkyrie into their corporeal form is using a form that does not belong to the Valkyrie. This is why the corrupted versions of Valkyries have metal wings and unusual skin tones. They are not themselves. By forcing a Hamr upon the Valkyries, it blocks out their Fylgja. They don’t have limitless travel anymore, and it hinders their purpose. It’s also why the Valkyries became mad and enraged and lost their purpose. Odin had to put a leash on the valkyries, so the curse bound them to Odin and they were forced to listen to everything he said.
Freya had the key that Odin needed to create Valkyries in physical form and even make new Valkyries. Freya uses Vanir Magic, drawing from the very essence of old magic. It took time and patience because Freya would not curse the Valkyries as Odin had done. The first thing she had to do is find a way to give them a Hamr that would corrupt their souls. Part of this is Freya allowing the magic to flow through her, and blending her own Hamr. In a way, she found a way to ‘clone’ her own Hamr and grant it to the Valkyries. The second part is that the Valkyrie had to welcome the Hamr into her soul which requires trust, loyalty, and hope. Odin could never produce these three traits at all. The third part is the hamr of a bird. Each Valkyrie has a choice of what bird they bond with. The hamr of a bird symbolizes freedom and the ability to fly wherever they wish: they are not bound and therefore can have a Hamr without corruption.
The Hamingja is still shared among the Valkyries, even in corporeal form, and that does not change.
This is why Odin could never produce the results of uncorrupted Corporeal Valkyries because he does not have the strength of Vanir magic or the loyalty of the Valkyries.

When Odin took Freya’s warrior spirit and her wings, he did more than just take away her ability to fight and defend herself. He literally ripped her soul to pieces.
The four parts of the soul are Hamr, Hugr, Fylgja, and Hamingja (form, mind, direction, and luck respectively). Odin had ripped Freyja’s Hugr and Hamr from her. Her Hugr was her warrior spirit, and by taking that, it had fractured a part of her personality. Her spirit was broken, and she wasn’t whole because of it. This is why when Baldur died, she could not see reason or passed all the rage for nearly three years. She wasn’t whole and couldn’t see past all that rage.
The other part that Odin stole was her Hamr or her form. Now, Odin didn’t steal all of it, she could still shapeshift into a large falcon, but he had taken a piece of it, her Valkyrie wings, which match that same warrior spirit. Odin wanted to strip her of her most valued possessions: as the goddess of war and as the Valkyrie queen (as it was one of the few things that truly made her happy in Asgard).
Without these, Freya wasn’t whole. While Freya was calm and quiet most of the time in solitude, she also became bitter and snippy. She lost a part of herself that gave her direction, that guided her. She was a kind and thoughtful goddess, fierce and powerful. Yet without her form being whole and her mind, her personality, Odin had essentially stolen what made Freya, Freya. Not only had he damaged her this way, but it also allowed him ultimate control over her; a reminder that he holds what truly makes her beloved by all.
Once reunited with the parts of her soul, she can see past her grief. This doesn’t mean that her grief ended, she had a lot of healing to still process, but it was like being able to finally see through the fog of grief and rage. Her emotional and mental self isn’t whole, but her soul was whole once more and she could finally see.

Freya’s tattoos are intricately linked to her use of Vanir Magic. When she is first seen in Midgard, her tattoos are barely noticeable. The dark markings along her shoulders, spanning down her arms to her fingertips, are faded. As if they had dulled from too much sun. She rarely used her magic anymore when she was bound to Midgard, due to feeling guilty about the magic she not used only on her son, but teaching Odin how to use Vanir’s magic as well (which he ultimately used against her).
So her tattoos faded over the centuries, dulled and barely noticeable as the veins that carry her blood. But when she starts to use her magic more, her tattoo colors rekindle. They start to darken again.
The purpose of this is that Freya’s tattoos are made from Vanir Magic. When she first started to learn magic at a young age, her mother taught her that magic is more than just a tool: Magic is felt. It lives within us and is drawn to the certain. When it came time, she had a specialized tattoo tool from the very roots of the Yggdrasil tree, Vanaheim, and Jotunheim crafted that edged the magic onto her skin. It was more than just a symbolic tool, these were the life force of magic and her planet. She was connected to the source of magic, and in turn, became one of the most powerful wielders of magic to this day. This tool can only be used once, as the roots, as the tattoo is made, become dust and fade into the tattoos. The reason this feat had not been performed ever again was that these roots all had to accept each other and accept the one who was going to wield the magic. Freya went on a journey, across the two realms and then in between realms, and had to seek the acceptance of each living root. The roots of these trees can see into the soul of a person and god, into their possible futures, and decide whether or not to grant such power.
Freya is the only living being who has earned acceptance. And now that Jotunheim can no longer be reached, such a tool can never be crafted again.
So based on this information, the fading and darkening of the tattoo are like a tree. When a tree dies, it starts to fade, turning white. But when a tree is alive, its roots and bark are dark, and it’s alive. Her tattoos reflect her use of magic; when she doesn’t use it, the markings fade, but as she uses magic, her markings darken.

The death of Freya’s parents happened during the Aesir-Vanir War. Freya rallied with her father against the forces as they started to attack Vanaheim, and Freya was determined to do anything to protect not just her family and her brother (who the Aesir had harmed and taken away her fun-loving brother from her) but invading her peaceful homeland and killing the innocence was enough to bring the Goddess of War to the forefront.
Njörd and Nerthus, God of seas and Goddess of the earth, both stood against the Aesir and were deadly warriors in their own right. It’s where Freya gained much of her battle competence, as her father taught her all her skills in fighting with a blade and bow, and her mother taunt her with how to fight with her magic.
But what made the war even more personal to Freya (even though it was personal already!) was the death of her mother first. Nerthus was aiding a neighboring village under raid from the Aesir army. They were peaceful and trying to escape when the Aesir attacked. The attack came by surprise, their intel had not been updated and so Nerthus had to fight for her life. She fought against Modi and Magni, who in the end overpowered her and killed her.
It wasn’t too long after that her father was attacked in the dead of night. His last actions saved many of his soldiers, who he sent to Freya’s temple, a strong front on the land, but he stayed behind to provide cover. He fought long and hard, but even he fell to the Aesir’s overwhelming force.
Freya had to keep her brother safe, as he was in no condition to lead, and with her father and mother dying in the war, it left her as the leading Commander and Queen of the Vanir. It was a title thrust upon her and she took up her sword and continued to fight against the Aesir. She fought with ferocity and strength and her tactics are what kept the Aesir back and the war always at a stalemate.
But the cost of the war pained her, and it’s why she hated to Marry Odin. Odin, the leader of the Aesir, commanded and invaded Vanaheim for no other reason but because he wanted it. The man who commanded the forces that killed her mother, her father, who tormented her brother, and destroyed her realm.
Yet despite all her anger, all her rage, she conceded to marry him, weighing her options. Continue war and watch mothers and fathers die in the war and children orphaned, to watch innocent people dying at the hands of these invaders.
Or, she could marry the King of the Aesir, prevent more bloodshed and loss, and protect her people and her realm. She took no pleasure in her decision, and despite her selfless choice, it haunts her to this day that it didn’t do anything to protect her Realm.

Freya use to steal the souls of children from Odin’s grasp without him knowing. When she learned about Odin’s true purpose of Valhalla, and how he only allowed warriors into its realm and would even send the souls of children to helheim and the Raven Keeper to be turned into ravens for his own uses. Freya immediately sought out to protect these souls. She couldn’t save everyone, but she still tried to do the best she could. So she would take a basket of strawberries, and would take the souls and place them into these strawberries.
By doing this, she protected the souls of the children and called out to her feline companions. These two cats were given to Freya by Thor as a gift. whenever she had the souls of children, she would call her cats; Bygul and Trjegul. These two large felines would take the baskets of strawberries back to Fólkvangr where the souls of the children would find peace rather than suffer under the rule of Odin as his ravens.

The art of naming among the Vanir is unique to their culture. As it is known, Freya has multiple names and some rarely spoken by most.
Last names often end with either -dottir or -son depending on if the child is a son or daughter. Among the Vanir, it was often the first name of the father that became the last name of the children, for Example Freya was known as Njörddottir, however its not unusual for a child to take the last name of their mother if the father is not present or the father was neglectful in the family.
Then there is the family name; this name is only spoken among the family and those that hold the heart of the Vanir. Freya’s true name is Nað, which is only spoken by Freyr. However, her parents often use the name; its the name she was given at birth and her true name. However her second name known as the common name, the one she was called by most of hte time is Freya. This name is used by anyone from aquintances to even close family and friends.
Vanir residence do not have middle names, they have their true name, their regular name, and then their last name.
Freya, however, has a couple of other names that are not related to her Vanir lifestyle. She has taken on the name of Vanadís when she is in her Valkyrie form. the name is often spoken with fear due to her skill and power as a Valkyrie and anyone who spoke that name often did so if they were in need of help. Freya refused to be known as Frigg, so she tried to ensure that a name as a Valkyrie would be one that could not be corrupted or lost. She struggled to hang onto any identity.
Another name of hers, Frigg, is a name she deeply despises. It is her Asgardian name, forced upon her by her husband. She was known as Frigg of the Aesir; removing her entire Vanir name in every form. This is a name she disowns and will not respond to. She finds it insulting and she hates it.

Freya has three forms she can take in terms of shifting.
The first form, that everyone is aware of and associates with Freya, is her falcon form. She is a brilliantly colored falcon of red, orange, brown, and white. While she is a falcon, she is as large as an eagle and has no impediments to human speech in this form. This is the form she primarily takes and her Valkyrie wings resemble the wings of her falcon.
The second form, less likely known of but some do know of it is her wolf form. With a coat of brown, orange, and off-white rusty color, she finds this form more useful in battle. When Odin locked away part of her spirit, she lost access to this form as well. She often used this form when she was around her brother, as she first shift to it in protectiveness with her brother. Her size is twice the size of a normal world, standing about six feet tall to her head.
The last form, which is known to no one except Freya and a few privy to the information is a raven form. Freya isn’t too fond of the form thanks to Odin and his corruption of Ravens to use as spies and tools (and murdering children to have his spies) so she rarely uses it. When she does, it’s to spy, though not against people but against her enemies. She keeps the knowledge hidden, wanting one to know she can shift into a raven. The size of her raven form is normal in comparison so she blends in with other ravens and birds without suspicion.
Below is pictures of Freya’s forms (with references to size)

The torment Freya witnesses is some of the inner guilt and self-loathing she experiences. During the search for the Norms, they taunted her with memories of old, and her inner darkness that she believes exists. During the scene, we see Frigg Illusion (Not Freya, but specifically stated as Frigg) refusing to let Freya near the Baldur Illusion.
And then, in the end, Frigg states that no one harms my boy, but me. What Freya is witnessing is her guilt manifested in front of her.
The reason she is seeing Frigg and not Freya is because it was during her time in Asgard as the Aesir Queen, Frigg. This is when she was a broken soul, her entire identity stripped, and she had nothing left; the only things that brought her joy were the Valkyries and son Baldur.
She sees that time of her life, As Frigg, an Aesir goddess, is what destroyed her boy. Her brokenness, her darkness at this time, is what killed her boy. While her rage and anger had been directed at Kratos for so many years, deep down she blames herself and believes that she is the reason for the death of her son. And it terrifies her to admit it, and to see it in these visions, in person, literally broke her in half because she is seeing her own worse nightmares and fears come to life.
She is the monster who killed her son and in turn destroyed herself. She is the monster just as Baldur said she was.

Freya is often called referred to by Your Majesty, My Queen, and Goddess, though these titles Freya often tries to convince people not to call her that.
The title she had among the Vanir was the Commander, she was a leader but she wore no crown. In fact, she refused the idea of wearing a crown because the people did not need a queen or a ruler. They have scattered clans and chieftains and in the towns and cities people lead based on their experience and the loyalty of people. there was no need for crowns in this kind of society.
When she became Queen of Asgard, she still did not really take to the title well. She does not like feeling as if she is above people, as if her crown makes her far more important than anyone else.
Despite no longer wearing a crown or being the Queen, people insist on still calling her that and she doesn’t understand why. She wears no crown, she claims no title, and yet still people insist to call her this. She’ll often state to just call her Freya, no Queen, No Majesty, not even Lady or goddess. Just Freya.
What Freya doesn’t understand is that she is the leader the people need. The fact she wants to wear no crown is why people see her as their Queen and leader. She will always request to be called Freya, but she has earned the loyalty and respect of people to command such respect despite not ever asking for it.
