Thought I had after reading a bunch of headcanons from @16woodsequ

I think the greatest tragedy of Steve Rogers' life is not the pain he suffered as a child, or the abuse from his father, or the grief of losing people or the tiredness of always having to fight.

The greatest tragedy of Steve Rogers' life is everyone around him knowing him, but simultaneously also ignoring him. Yes, Captain America is famous, he's admired/hated (depends on where you're standing). He's talked about often, asked for advice and leadership, he gets privileges too.

But no one really knows him. No one knows just how hurt he is. How *lonely* he is. How distrustful he is. How anxious and scared he is. No one bothers to find out either.

There's a reason he wanted someone with shared life experiences. Nat may try to get to know him, sympathise with him. Sam - bless his soul - tries his best but even as a veteran himself, he can't really understand everything about Steve Rogers, because a) he hasn't witnessed Steve's entire life, and b) Steve is extremely reserved, both by nature and out of trust issues.

As for everyone else, his teammates aren't nearly close enough to him, and everyone else simply doesn't care.

Everyone knows Captain America but not a single soul knows, or cares about Steven Grant Rogers.

Except...

Except for maybe that one boy who stuck with him and fought off the bullies and patched him up later. The boy who grew up with him and watched him grow up while tackling everything life was throwing. The boy who later on became the man who followed him into the jaws of death (quite literally). The boy who, as far as Steve knew, was now at the bottom of an abyss in the Alps. The boy who he had nothing left of, except dog tags and his own faded pencil sketches.

The boy whose name was James Buchanan Barnes.

Tony accidentally stumbles onto the fact that Steve isn't holding things together quite as well as he makes it look. As awkward as it is at first, Tony's been there, and he finds himself reaching out to him.

But the more he tries to push past Steve's walls the more he realises just how deep his issues go. And they all seem to be pointing in one direction.

Should he really be surprised to find SHIELD is at the root of it?

My Thoughts: in sequ we trust when it comes to steve whump!! poor steve is all messed up from shield's abuse and has a list of psychological/emotional issues longer than his pre-serum ailments, and the way it shows is SO SO SO detailed and devastating and believable, and tony being tony is trying to mend what's broken. this is being updated every thursday until it's done and there's so much meat in every chapter that even if you don't usually read wips, this is 100% worth following along 🥺

My Thoughts: i love rereading this fic and it hits the spot every time <3 it starts in the shawarma restaurant post-battle of new york and doesn't shy away from how tony gradually goes from ""disdain"" to adoration and steve adjusts slowly and fits in better with the team, and there's flirting and steve is so sweet and tony gets so gentle with him!! and the focus on food is executed so well i want to eat the whole fic

Oh, what he would do to listen to Bucky talk about the future as if it was the coolest thing in the world once more.

Steve shakes himself of that thought, knowing what always happens when he starts thinking too hard about Bucky.

That was yesterday, and even though Steve doesn't really need more than four hours of sleep because of the serum, he is exhausted.

He shook his head. “No, I nicked myself. And then, I, uh...” He looked at the finger wrapped up in gauze. The whole thing felt phenomenally stupid now. “I wanted to see if I could make it stop. I didn’t mean to make it all stop.” 

Steve rolled his eyes and started cleaning everything up. “Can you, like, make it go again?” he asked, gesturing at the bloodied bandages. 

Eddie stared at his fingers. “I dunno,” he mumbled. “Maybe.” He tried to concentrate, but his head hurt. 

Steve grabbed the stool and gestured for him to scoot over. With a little bit of maneuvering, they got him sitting in the tub, on the stool, and he leaned over to put his head between his knees. He heard the water in the sink running and the next thing he knew, there was a cool washcloth pressed to the back of his neck. He shivered and pushed it away. “Too cold.”

“Sorry, man,” Steve said. “You looked like you had a headache. This usually helps with mine.”

Eddie looked up. “Yeah, sorry. It’s just...” Another full-body shiver ripped through him. “I’m a mess right now.” 

He nodded and went back to the sink. Turning on the hot water tap, he held his fingers under it until it warmed up. “Let’s get you cleaned up, then. Come on.” He grabbed a towel off the rack and draped it over Eddie’s shoulders.

“No, man, it’s fine,” he said, trying to push it off. “I’m just going to get your nice towels all gross.”

“I’ve got a washer and bleach, Munson. It’s fine.” He pulled the towel back into place and crouched down in front of him to wash his face.

Younger Steve/Older Partner? Yes! Double yes! Love it!

Older Steve/Younger Partner? I'll give it a try if it's by a known and trusted author, or it has an interesting premise.

Codependency: -8

Not my thing at all. I don't find it cute or sexy or romantic. I'll overlook mild codependency if the rest of the fic is intriguing, but if it's prominent enough to be tagged it had better be a dark fic.

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: -3

Generally no. Can be okay if Steve is the object of possessive behavior (especially from Tony), but possessiveness often reads as abusive to me and not in a fun way.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): -3

I'm not opposed to an opposites attract dynamic, but in my experience a lot of stories that emphasize it are just forcing the characters into stock fan tropes no matter how poorly they may fit. MCU Steve is just not a particularly cheerful and sunshiny golden retriever, guys.

Fun! Must we always fall in love? I especially enjoy Steve & Nat or Steve & Thor friend sex.

I'm not saying nope because I could maybe tolerate it if I dislike the "loser" in the triangle. But it's almost a nope. I just feel bad for the one left out? And am usually annoyed at a love triangle to poly triad situation.

I am open to unrequited love though. Give me a happy couple and someone who needs to learn to let go of their one-sided crush, as long as no one is demonized for their feelings (or lack thereof).

Poly, open relationships: 0

Depends 100% on the ship. OT6 and SamSteveNat are delightful. Some other combos are tolerable for a good story.

Mostly not my jam though. why do you guys keep shoving Bucky into ships where he's not needed?

Part of the draft of one of my fics from my Devil Town series

The Hydra guards are still under the impression that his metal arm is incapacitated. Good. He steps over the thick electrical cords from the Chair, which now lay disconnected and dead on the flooded floor. The Chair itself has been smashed apart, broken pieces scattered across the room. He hoists himself up to sit cross-legged on the control station. Water falls from his boots in small rivulets, dripping quietly to the floor. The lone emergency light paints the room a dim red. “I have eyes on the Asset,” a guard says from the entrance of the room. “Keep it there. Do not engage unless you have to,” a staticky voice says over the guard’s comms unit. He continues to sit placidly on the control station, metal arm limply hovering over the control panel. “Stay there, Asset. We have you cornered,” the guard announces, his voice quivering slightly. He’s afraid of the Winter Soldier. He should be. Bucky does as he’s told and stays. Not because he has to follow their orders anymore, but because they’re falling right into his trap.
