Bear With Me (Jewelry Thief Nightmare) 

A pothead teenager is one thing. A grown ass man who never stopped is another. Once I moved out of my parents’ house, there was nothing holding me back from being perpetually high. I convinced myself that I’m a better musician, and that my brain makes better creative associations when I’m stoned. Weed didn’t seem to be slowing me down, so I kept smoking it for fifteen years on a near-daily basis. Not too long ago, a doctor referred me to a state-funded mental health clinic, so I went for an evaluation. The practitioner, to whom I poured out my soul to, told me that the problems I described sounded like symptoms of cannabis dependency, and that I would have to complete a rehab program before seeing a psychiatrist. I left feeling disregarded, and despite my best intentions, I never followed through with the rehab. Now that I’m nearing a year off the sticky icky of my own accord, I see that the practitioner’s diagnosis wasn’t too far-off.

本日はGeorge Clintonからの繋がりで、米国よりをごBootsy Collinsを紹介していきます。

Bootsy Collins(ブーツィ・コリンズ)とは、1951年米国オハイオ州生まれのベーシスト・シンガー。

8歳の頃からギターを始め、14歳からスタジオミュージシャン活動を開始。15歳の時に組んだバンドがJame Brown(以下：JB)が所属するキングレコードの目に留まり、多くの大物ミュージシャンのバックを務める。

1971年JBのバックバンドが待遇改善を求めてストを起こした際に代役で彼のバンドが呼ばれ、リハなしにステージを成功させたことで、JBのバックバンドを務めて、ファンクソウルの頂点に。彼のベースが入ったことでJBのサウンドでベース・リズム隊がメインに躍り出て、ブーツィーの在籍時代に、「セックス・マシーン」(1970)、「スーパーバッド」(1970)、「ソウル・パワー」(1971) などの大ヒット曲を多く生み出した。(このあたりはJBの映画Mr.Dynamiteで詳しく描かれてるので興味ある方はぜひ！) だが重なる薬物使用と、タキシードではなく、サイケ重視でやりたい時期も相まって、規律に厳しいJBに解雇される。

以降はデトロイトに移住し、自身のバンドを活動をする中で、スピナーズからも声がかかり、結果P-Funkに加入。以降はファンカデリックでもジミヘンの真似で歌うなど、歌手としても注目を浴びる。 1980年以降はソロや、キースリチャーズ、久保田利伸の作品にベース参加、また歌い手としてもSnoop Dogや、Victor Wootenの作品に参加。他映画音楽や、ベース奏者向けオンライン大学の解説など、今もなお現役として活躍する伝説のミュージシャン。

本日は、そんなBootsyの楽曲の中から、スラップ奏法の始まりとも言われる1975年の名作「Chocolate City」をお届けします。
