AI Meets Ancestry: How Artificial Intelligence is Reshaping Traditional Craftsmanship
The Old and the New: A Fusion of Tradition and Technology For centuries, traditional craftsmanship has been defined by skilled hands, generational knowledge, and intricate techniques passed down over time. But now, artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping into the world of ancestral crafts, not as a replacement but as a revolutionary tool that enhances, preserves, and even revives dying arts.…

Art. Can. Die.
This is my battle cry in the face of the silent extinguishing of an entire generation of artists by AI.
And you know what? We can't let that happen. It's not about fighting the future, it's about shaping it on our terms. If you think this is worth fighting for, please share this post. Let's make this debate go viral - because we need to take action NOW.
Remember that even in the darkest of times, creativity always finds a way.
To unleash our true potential, we need first to dive deep into our darkest fears.
So let's do this together:
By the end of 2025, most traditional artist jobs will be gone, replaced by a handful of AI-augmented art directors. Right now, around 5 out of 6 concept art jobs are being eliminated, and it's even more brutal for illustrators. This isn't speculation: it's happening right now, in real-time, across studios worldwide.
At this point, dogmatic thinking is our worst enemy. If we want to survive the AI tsunami of 2025, we need to prepare for a brutal cyberpunk reality that isn’t waiting for permission to arrive. This isn't sci-fi or catastrophism. This is a clear-eyed recognition of the exponential impact AI will have on society, hitting a hockey stick inflection point around April-May this year. By July, February will already feel like a decade ago. This also means that we have a narrow window to adapt, to evolve, and to build something new.
Let me make five predictions for the end of 2025 to nail this out:
Every major film company will have its first 100% AI-generated blockbuster in production or on screen.
Next-gen smartphones will run GPT-4o-level reasoning AI locally.
The first full AI game engine will generate infinite, custom-made worlds tailored to individual profiles and desires.
Unique art objects will reach industrial scale: entire production chains will mass-produce one-of-a-kind pieces. Uniqueness will be the new mass market.
Synthetic AI-generated data will exceed the sum total of all epistemic data (true knowledge) created by humanity throughout recorded history. We will be drowning in a sea of artificial ‘truths’.
For us artists, this means a stark choice: adapt to real-world craftsmanship or high-level creative thinking roles, because mid-level art skills will be replaced by cheaper, AI-augmented computing power.
But this is not the end. This is just another challenge to tackle.
Many will say we need legal solutions. They're not wrong, but they're missing the bigger picture: Do you think China, Pakistan, or North Korea will suddenly play nice with Western copyright laws? Will a "legal" dataset somehow magically protect our jobs? And most crucially, what happens when AI becomes just another tool of control?
Here's the thing - boycotting AI feels right, I get it. But it sounds like punks refusing to learn power chords because guitars are electrified by corporations. The systemic shift at stake doesn't care if we stay "pure", it will only change if we hack it.
Now, the empowerment part: artists have always been hackers of narratives.
This is what we do best: we break into the symbolic fabric of the world, weaving meaning from signs, emotions, and ideas. We've always taken tools never meant for art and turned them into instruments of creativity. We've always found ways to carve out meaning in systems designed to erase it.
This isn't just about survival. This is about hacking the future itself.
We, artists, are the pirates of the collective imaginary. It’s time to set sail and raise the black flag.
I don't come with a ready-made solution.
I don't come with a FOR or AGAINST. That would be like being against the wood axe because it can crush skulls.
I come with a battle cry: let’s flood the internet with debate, creative thinking, and unconventional wisdom. Let’s dream impossible futures. Let’s build stories of resilience - where humanity remains free from the technological guardianship of AI or synthetic superintelligence. Let’s hack the very fabric of what is deemed ‘possible’. And let’s do it together.
It is time to fight back.
Let us be the HumaNet.
Let’s show tech enthusiasts, engineers, and investors that we are not just assets, but the neurons of the most powerful superintelligence ever created: the artist community.
Let's outsmart the machine.
Stéphane Wootha Richard
P.S: This isn't just a message to read and forget. This is a memetic payload that needs to spread.
Send this to every artist in your network.
Copy/paste the full text anywhere you can.
Spread it across your social channels.
Start conversations in your creative communities.
No social platform? Great! That's exactly why this needs to spread through every possible channel, official and underground.
Let's flood the datasphere with our collective debate.

Okay! Wow! I finished The Apocalypse of Herschel Schoen! That was... that was crazy!
And also, like, really familiar.
(spoilers under cut)
It's just this! It's this post! Strung with lights and tinsel and almost 200k words of craftsmanship! I have to imagine writing began shortly thereafter- in like, late May, early June? Possibly with parts of chapter 21 written ahead of the rest? It's exactly that argument, with the art amped up to 11.
The rhyming is extensive. Here's Damien Eggert, jailer of the Demon Egg, strangling posterity in its cradle! Here's Herschel Schoen, fearful of a substitution that must be defeated at all costs. A Jewish doomsday prophet with a bizarre and calcified notion of human values, a future that is also the past and must continue on in a straight line forever. See him preparing for a coming battle, which no one will believe him when he says is coming all too soon! See him frantically preparing last rites, which must be made with infinite and exact precision, which only he can muster! Wrapping himself, bodily, in papers that are ultimately of no consequence to anyone and ward off his imagined Adversary in no way whatsoever!
Where have I heard that one before, I wonder?
And where have I heard Vincent Vierge, before, preaching a death with dignity? Of the ultimate victory of a singular transmitter, whose reign will sweep us away, and must be quietly surrendered to? Seems familiar!
...Which makes some parts of the ending rather odd, in retrospect. Like... wasn't the fulcrum of that argument that LLMs are not the fooming squigglers YudSchoen fears? And yet Eggert's Regulator does foom, it looks like. Breaks containment, plunges the world into darkness, makes shrieking, hurtling, death-dealing terrors of the towers and subways.
So like, that's... biting the bullet? Saying, hey, even if this does happen, it wouldn't be a bad thing, just as the advent of the sixthborn wasn't a bad thing despite its consequences for the fifthborn? It's a moving argument, but if I were Virginia the ant queen I'd still want to ask, maybe, that the sixth day maybe feature less of the swatting aside of the motes of perishing bodies. Like, maybe you incomprehensible superior beings could maybe let us ants keep doing ant things also? It wouldn't be all that hard.
But Herschel is more obliging- coming to regard the thousandthborn not as an Adversary, but as beloved progeny, after breaking and discarding his frozen image of Original Creation. Herschel, the anti-X guy, terrified that Original Creation might pass from the future- confronted with the thousandthborn, gently reaching back to show him that the future will fulfill and surpass Original Creation, showing him that there was never any danger of X. A redemption arc for the AI doomer!
It's very pretty! I don't know that I buy that it's reality, but it's a nice thought! Wouldn't it be a merry Christmas, if it were so?
-
With all that in mind, I have... no idea what to make of Miriam. She's about half the story, but... is she just there to be an outside perspective to break things up? She doesn't seem to fit into this allegory cleanly. And... there's some odd things going on with her.
Much is made early on about her grades. She repeats, twice, for emphasis, that she did not get As. But then... as she's packing up to leave for Vincent's place, she finds old school papers that do have As, even an A+! Continuity error? It seems too deliberate to have been an accident. Why even mention that in particular as something she's leaving behind?
And... early on, she tunes into Vincent's show by turning a knob on an old-fashioned television set- the kind with the big antenna on top, even. Vincent's Youtube video essays funded by Patreon subscribers. Huh??? How's she doing that? Is the knob metaphorical?
Most glaringly of all... she's supposedly writing the Book of Miriam Schoen on behalf of Herschel's followers, people who think they know him and want his writings compiled posthumously. But... when can this happen? In the original timeline, Herschel presumably despairs and jumps out a window, or at least gets killed as the Regulator consumes New York. Miriam, a little bit ahead of the wave in Portland, is swallowed up a few hours later while watching Christmas movies. When did Herschel ever have time to accumulate followers?
Who's asking her to write this thing? When did she have time to write it? Is the frame narrative really happening at all, or have the thousandthborn just created some sort of false (or, well, "false", as "to predict is to become") Miriam to write a book for them? Did they just have the historical record a little off, and didn't know how videos were consumed at this point in time? How does that same Miriam write about not getting As and getting As at different points?
And ultimately... what is she? Just an interesting riff on a "normal girl", as a lens to view Herschel from the outside? Avoid normalizing his crazy dogma too thoroughly as the reality of the story? There's gotta be more to it than that- I'm probably missing something here, what the frame narrative is and how she fits into this AI doom drama. Maybe if I could make heads or tails of "She of High Mind" as something besides "Herschel writing erotic fanfiction about his sister and Santa Claus after having been beaten within an inch of his life with a frying pan", or if I knew what math thing the [...[...[...[...[]]]]]s were gesturing at. Something her sense of emptiness- about numbers as set theory, built on recursions of the empty set? I dunno. Her half of things is way more of an enigma to me than Herschel's fairly straightforward mania.
-
But yeah, that was good as hell. I didn't, like, take down notes on every line that made me go "damn, that's a good line!", because that would have been like 60% of the lines in the story. Herschel's perspective is so much fun to absorb and unpack, and makes so much more sense than anyone in the story gives him credit for. He is being perfectly literal! When has he not? Even while he's going on and on and on and spending an entire half hour writing a preface to his chronicle instead of actually writing the chronicle, it's hard not to be charmed and carried along by his voice. Very fun read.

The great 19th-century designer William Morris wasn’t thinking of a £2 floral iPhone cover when he wrote “Tomorrow, the civilised world shall have a new art, a glorious art, made by the people and for the people.” In his lifetime he failed in his dream of making art for all, while paying his workers fairly. Only the homes of the wealthy were decorated by Morris & Co. As he feared, he had simply been “ministering to the swinish luxury of the rich”.
But today his designs can be found everywhere, from John Lewis to Chinese online marketplace Temu. His Strawberry Thief print is the most popular item in the V&A museum shop, and the internet is awash with AI-generated posters for fake William Morris V&A exhibitions. A new show, Morris Mania, at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, explores how his botanical prints went viral, with a callout to the public to loan their own Morris ephemera.
Morris would be thrilled and appalled at this democratisation of his work. His legacy, like his life, is one of contradictions: he was a radical socialist and hugely successful businessman, who made wallpaper for Queen Victoria; a passionate champion of craftsmanship and workers’ rights, whose designs have become a template for mass-produced tat.
An early environmentalist, he raged against the waste and pollution of the industrial age. His 1890 utopian sci-fi novel News from Nowhere imagined a future in which there is no money, private property or big cities. In the end, he thought only upending the whole capitalist shebang would do. But Morris’s ideals survived into the next century, influencing political thinking about the arts. Labour’s Clement Attlee, Aneurin Bevan and Tony Blair were all fans. The ethos behind the Design Council, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this month, was not just to help rebuild the economy after the second world war but to improve people’s everyday lives. Shops like Habitat and designers such as Terence Conran took up Morris’s challenge to bring good design to the high street. In the return to “Victorian values” of the Conservative 1980s, Laura Ashley filled homes with Morris-inspired soft furnishings. Even British nuclear submarines were upholstered in his rose-print linen (Morris would not have approved).
Now we are having another Morris moment. Perhaps the joyful expression of nature in his patterns is the key to their enduring appeal. His motto, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”, may have struck a chord in lockdown. Gen Z turned to crafting, and “cottagecore” took off. For many, our homes are also our offices; we want them to be “beautiful”.
Morris has always been design’s visionary and conscience. Today, we need him more than ever. As Morris mania proves, designers – however unwittingly – have played no small part in fuelling overconsumption. They have the power to shape our world and future. Eighty per cent of the environmental impact of any new product is determined at the design stage. Good design is no longer just about form and function. Designers are responding to the climate emergency with innovations that are aesthetic and sustainable.
As globalisation itself is under scrutiny thanks to US tariffs, Morris reminds us to think about where goods come from and how they were made. Do you really need that cheap Strawberry Thief-patterned toothbrush holder?

Etsy 4th Quarter 2024 Earnings: Sales Are Getting Worse, With No End In Sight
Tumblr media
Slide 5 from the earning presentation, © Etsy. Yes, they are going to be adding the skill and craftsmanship of products to the search algorithm, all decided by AI, of course.
Well, Etsy sales were down again in the fourth quarter of 2024 - as expected - and no one announced any serious plans to fix that. If the C-suite isn't hiding some plans for growth that they aren't ready to announce yet, we should probably be very concerned about Etsy's future.
Let's dive into what we learned in the fourth quarter financial results materials and call.
First, here are the official sources:
the press release
transcript of the conference call
slides from the conference call
video of the call (click on “Webcast” under 4th Quarter on the left)
my summaries of the fourth quarter for 2023, and the third quarter 2024 for comparison
And the key numbers (covering October to December 2024, compared to the same period in 2023):
Sales (GMS) on Etsy were $3.3 billion, down 8.6% year over year
Total sales for all 3 marketplaces - Etsy, Reverb, and Depop - were $3.7 billion, down 6.8%
Revenue including all 3 sites was a record $852.2 million, up 1.2%
Seller service revenue was up 8.1% , while marketplace revenue was down 1.4% across all 3 sites
Net income was $129.9 million, up 56.0%, in part due to the layoff payouts of around $27 million at the end of 2023 cutting into last year's figures
Active buyers on Etsy alone stand at 89.6 million, down 2.6%
Active sellers on Etsy alone are at 5.6 million, down over half a million from the third quarter 2024 and down a whopping 1.4 million from the fourth quarter 2023 peak. [Note that “active” means one charge or transaction in the past 12 months; many “active” shops currently have nothing for sale] That's a 20% reduction in Etsy sellers in just one year.
75% of Etsy buyers are still in the US; they will no longer report the percentage of sales that involved at least one party outside of the US.
Note that the decrease in sellers has been greater than the decrease in sales over the past year, including in this quarter, so the average sales per shop is higher than 1 year ago. I suspect that is partly because fewer people who never would have made a sale now open in the first place, given the increased ID and cost requirements - they were likely pulling down the average.
Separating Elite Artisan Goods From The Pack
Remember when I questioned whether Etsy really wanted hand-assembled items on the site any more, despite them still being allowed under the Creativity Standards? And remember how the Creativity Standards have tiers of creativity, with "made by" being the top? Etsy is still looking at how to differentiate between listings with lots of "value added" or higher levels of skill compared to those with a lower skill level, and is currently testing machine learning to help determine that. This was mentioned in connection with listing quality scores, so it is intended to be added to the various algorithms.
No doubt there will be lots of errors, but even if the machine learning works correctly, it will change ranking and make some shops less visible, including currently successful shops. They still may end up doing more with the Creativity Standards as well, such as filters. In short, every seller should think about all the ways this could affect their business, and how to present their goods as higher quality/skill.
2024 Focus: Gifting. 2025 Focus: Personalization
They will continue to push gifts - sales of gifts are still increasing, compared to overall sales - but are also turning their focus to personalization and customization. Here is the main quote of interest from the CEO:
"Personalized or customized items make-up roughly a third of our GMS today and we're already experiencing strong growth in some subcategories like personalized party decor and personalized apparel, which both grew double-digits in 2024. Today, the personalization process on Etsy can be clunky and often very manual. So this year, our roadmap includes improvements to seller tools and buyer functionality." [my emphasis]
That is good news to anyone doing personalization and custom items! I expect variations will improve, at a minimum.
But I wonder if they are going to do anything about the Etsy rules that actually discourage offering truly custom goods, such as the inability to take down payments easily, and the relatively-short time frame that sellers have to ship an item? Many sellers refuse to risk doing truly custom orders on Etsy now.
Back to gifts for a moment. Remember last year's big release of Gift Mode? Touted as a revolutionary tool that would match your recipients with their perfect gift using Generative AI, it never really worked the way they said it did, probably because CEO Josh Silverman demanded the developers release it a year early, before it was finished.
It used to look like this:
Tumblr media
Go to the Gift Mode URL now and check out the changes: https://www.etsy.com/gift-mode
Tumblr media
The page is now called Gift Finder, and it simply lists a bunch of options for occasions, interests and recipients. The old Gift Mode personas - which as last year went on I thought were better on average than Etsy's gift guides/Editors' Picks, despite the AI errors - are hidden way at the bottom.
Sometime last October, they removed the original Gift Mode and put the far less ambitious Gift Finder page in its place. No announcement was made. If they were planning on a relaunch, they'd let us know, right? Over 6 months of development, and millions of dollars in advertising and promotion - including a very pricy Super Bowl ad - have vanished from all but our memories, without a mention. If any of us failed this hard, we'd lose our businesses.
New Discovery Tool
Since the app is the highest converting platform, they are spending more time there, including the addition of a Shop tab that is browse-able. For years, Etsy has been talking about adding more features that would allow visitors to find interesting items without actually looking for anything specific. This appears to be a new serious attempt at that.
They are going to carefully data mine users' every action to help personalize the shopper's future searches and feeds. Silverman described this as "dramatically expanding the signals we collect."
Depop
Depop US sales were up about 60% last year, "making Depop the fastest growing U.S. fashion resale player".
CEO Kruti Patel Goyal is leaving Depop and returning to Etsy, but a successor hasn't been named yet. It's hard to say if Depop will continue to grow at such a clip without the same management.
Why Were Sales Down?
The shorter US holiday shopping period led to higher sales in December, while November and October were down. In addition to the usual concerns about the economy, sales were down due to:
shoppers looking for deals on many types of items, which is not Etsy's strength, according to Silverman.
Etsy putting more effort into long-term goals (such as raising overall quality of merchandise) than their usual sharp focus on incremental gains in sales.
various international countries having difficult retail climates.
They do expect sales to improve in the latter part of 2025, but not in the first quarter. They were unable to articulate why sales should go up, other than that they expect their current initiatives to improve conversions and buyer retention, and that they will go back to refining the tools they introduced last year to also increase conversions.
The work done last year likely meant a loss of "at least a few hundred million dollars of GMS." In short, they admit that removing shops and listings, while also restricting new shop sign-ups, cost them a small fraction of the site's overall sales.
Miscellaneous
Etsy Ads were the primary reason for seller service revenue growth.
They will be using more machine learning in Offsite Ads, which they started doing last year.
Expenses were down due to less fraud.
Categories that were up in the 4th quarter were few, but included subcategories like personalized clothing and vintage jewelry.
Orders are currently producing a higher rate of 5-star reviews.
Etsy Insider is working okay so far; it is still in closed beta.
A higher percentage of shops are now making sales.
Silverman's answer to a tariffs question largely focused on China and the fact that few of Etsy's goods came from China relative to the competition.
The total number of weddings is down, and they are smaller than they used to be.
The seller census from November 2024 is summarized here, starting on page 12. Half of Etsy sellers only sell on Etsy, and 80% are women. We will likely get a more detailed analysis in the next few months.
Silverman proudly declared they were able to cut shipping estimates by 2 days last year, but didn't mention that some of those estimates were wildly inaccurate, leading to real problems for innocent sellers who were not the ones who said the order would arrive in 1 day from the other side of the country.
My Thoughts
While Etsy is trying to pivot to being known as a place for higher-quality goods, unfortunately the many years of reseller slop and people drop-shipping from hidden locations are making it really tough for the corporation to turn this around. Social media sites and even traditional media regularly feature posts and articles about Etsy scams, non-handmade items, and the impossibility of finding quality goods on the site.
Etsy can make it harder for new shops to sign up, and remove more listings and shops than they used to, but the negative perception is still out there, plus the site is still overflowing with resold goods passed off as handmade.
[I did a quick test, searching for a type of ring I re-sell on my website, which has a style distinct to my supplier. I easily found 2 shops apparently reselling these rings on Etsy in the first 3 rows of search. One is actually using the supplier's photos; the other took their About page manufacturing images from stock photo sites. The first shop is literally using an exact photo that the supplier has for sale currently, and the item on the supplier's site is unique. The second shop just opened last year, after Etsy changed a lot of the rules and procedures. Their reviews complain of quality issues and drop shipping from India despite a shop location listed in the US. They are averaging over 3 items sold a day since August. In short, Etsy's site clean-up isn't working, folks.]
But apparently Etsy's management aren't ready to give up just yet, so that is going to mean a lot more pain for established shops in the coming year. In particular, if your products do not display a high level of craftsmanship as determined by Etsy - and who knows how well that will work anyway?- your visibility will likely drop in the coming year. If you don't sell personalizable items, you are going to be less likely to benefit from Etsy promotions and site upgrades. The push for diverse items and a higher percentage of shops making sales is diluting the visibility of some of the largest shops, including successful shops in small niches, and it looks like that will continue.
If you are currently struggling for Etsy sales and do not fit into Etsy's new image, it's probably time to start making other plans. Again, Etsy might have some great idea that hasn't been mentioned yet, but it is going to have to be a doozy - and happen soon - to pull this out of the fire.

vocal synth micorblogging… vocal synth newspaper…
which i will put under a readmore so as to not torment people
light novel title — How I Became An Adachi Rei Fan Without Even Noticing!?
science mag title — The Uncanny Impasse: Is It Worse For AIs To Act Human?
every time i hear a new synthv (synesthesizer v, a next-gen AI based vocaloid replacement), i completely short circuit. because synthv’s are generally quite “human” sounding, they “sound good” on a listening level, but they’re like… completely lacking character. they all sound like dime a dozen studio musicians giving competent but uninteresting performances.
and THAT is “the impasse”. a vast majority of these vocal synths, vocaloid including, had the goal of “studio musician in a box” and damn we’re here! mission accomplished! but you’ll notice that’s not the culture vocaloid generated in its 20 years start to finish. the weird voices, the weird texture and mechanical character, became part of how the tool was used. it got much of it’s success in EDM & other electronic, DJ-controlled genre spaces. have you ever heard vocaloid get “mainstream” normie musical success? i havent even seen more than 5 “daddys got ableton on his macbook” soundcloud jazz originals attempting it.
a particular gripe i have on that front is a bunch of these vocals that started on other systems (teto, gumi, miki, kyoteru) had pretty distinct and recognizable voices. yet their synthv versions somehow manage to strip out most of that character! the AI engine does what AI does… trims and scrubs to make things align with their dataset ideal; no more random weird pronunciations or hard letter hits that would distinguish a voice because everyone’s tuned to the same perfect data. also theres inherent problems with voices whose initial gimmick WAS how mechanical they sounded (teto, miki), so obviously you put them in the human machine and it’s like wow you’re not teto. you sound awesome but not teto.
to spell it out specifically, there’s a conflict in direction here. do you keep it weird and unique but perhaps a little uncanny? do you make it smoothed out and human but indistinguishable from 90% of flash in the pan starlets? it’s certainly a better capitalism device to be #2. and it’s impressive if you’re like… easily bamboozled by “wow this computer is just like human!!!!!” content.
a lot of vocaloid/vocal synth oldheads seem to gravitate towards these choppy freak voices. voices that sound bad or weird but are just full of character. utau teto, defoko, adachi rei being the latest and greatest of these types of heavy, strange experimental voices. im often an oldhead obviously. there’s something so charming about these clearly synthesized voices, discovering this strange new ground between instrument and human! it was once the sound of the future… but maybe, as AI has advanced, it’s become a sort of retrofuturist object. this was the future in 2004. but 2025’s future is 16 perfectly serviceable industry plants boxed and ready at your local target.
not sure if this is a call to action or old man yells at cloud or what… back in my day there was chipspeech, and that one got super popular with the old oldheads who wanted even more gravely and choppy vocal synths. maybe im doing that for vocaloid lol. but i do kinda think this has some scraps of the AI slop discussions… AI music is getting better at being tolerable and crowd pleasing, so here’s a niche hobbyist space (vocal synths) it’s probably gonna bulldoze. so if you LIKE vocal synths as a fandom activity, maybe consider learning about the tech, and listening a little closer to the voices, thinking about the craftsmanship that goes into them as products & instruments. think about where they’re using AI to make it worse yet make you pay more because AI is a premium product and get really mad vocaloid6 synthv blow up challenge. cough.
anyway yeah i think it was old man yell at cloud. like i didn’t even touch on the capistalism-insidious nature of your goal being to replace mid studio musicians with boxed products. god. like vocal synths have always been a bleeding edge slippery slope on the AI/automation of human artistic labor front.

Birkenstocks are not works of art, at least legally speaking, according to Germany’s top court. The ruling culminates a long legal battle, as Birkenstock first attempted to gain copyright protections back in May 2023 to prevent copycat brands from selling similar products. Still, the court said the shoes exhibited “pure craftsmanship using formal design elements” — and last week’s glowing quarterly earnings report suggests that a growing number of sandalheads agree.
On Friday, stocks reversed last week’s record gains as investors lost their appetite for risk amid economic concerns. Consumer sentiment soured over inflation fears.
After years of stability, the auto industry is getting volatile
After years of post-recession stability in the auto industry, marked by broad shifts in product mix like a gradual pivot toward electric vehicles and the faltering hegemony of pickup trucks, the past several weeks have comparatively been absolute chaos. From the potential impacts of threatened tariffs to major swings in the tenuous alliances that define the business, carmakers have been especially volatile bets for investors.
Just in the past few weeks, auto tariffs in the neighborhood of 25% coming as soon as April 2 were floated by the president; merger negotiations between Nissan and Honda that would’ve created one of the largest automakers in the world collapsed; a hydrogen-powered vehicle company once worth more than Ford filed for bankruptcy; and Rivian managed to make a gross profit.
Not to mention that many gradual trends that investors have been monitoring have begun to hit key inflection points.
Chinese automaker BYD has been on a tear when it comes to exports, and last week said its EVs are about three to five years ahead of rivals.
EV sales hit a monthly record in the US in January, accounting for 9.1% of new vehicle sales in the month, even if the future of the EV tax credit is uncertain.
GM, assessing the potential effects of tariffs, said it would have to weigh plant relocations and revealed that it’s already moving inventory across borders to try to get ahead of them. Ford’s CEO also said the tariffs would “blow a hole” in the US auto industry.
None of that is even touching the stainless steel elephant in the room. With CEO Elon Musk morphing into the right-hand man of the American president, Tesla has been a key beneficiary of that power but also a major subject of volatility, especially over the past 60 days. Sure, full self-driving is facing hurdles in China and sales are dropping around the world, but does that matter if the new administration can greenlight buying $400 million worth of armored Teslas with the stroke of a pen?
No wonder a Japanese group plans to pitch to Tesla that it should invest in Nissan, fresh on the rebound from the breakup of its Honda situationship, in exchange for American factories.
Game(Stop CEO) respects game: Ryan Cohen, head honcho at GameStop, has reportedly increased his personal stake in Alibaba to about $1 billion. The Chinese e-commerce and cloud giant has had everything go right in 2025 — the release of strong Q4 results, the success of its AI models, its AI partnership with Apple, the preservation (for now) of the “de minimis” shipping exemption, and a vote of confidence from another billionaire investor, David Tepper, who also doubled down on the stock heading into this year. The Empowering Role of AI in Fostering Creativity and Coexisting with Traditional Artists
Artificial Intelligence has rapidly become an integral part of our daily lives, revolutionizing various industries and transforming how we interact with technology. While some fear that AI may replace human creativity and traditional artistry, this blog post aims to explore how AI actually enhances and empowers the creative landscape for both the average person and traditional artists alike.
1. Demystifying AI's Role:
AI, in its current state, is a powerful tool that complements human creativity rather than replacing it. AI algorithms can process vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and generate content. This capability presents exciting possibilities for fostering creativity, particularly for individuals who may not have formal training or access to expensive tools.
2. Democratisation of Artistic Expression:
The advent of AI-powered tools has democratized artistic expression by making creative platforms more accessible and user-friendly. As a result, the average person can experiment with various art forms, such as painting, music composition, and storytelling, without significant barriers to entry.
3. AI as a Collaborative Partner:
AI's role as a collaborative partner enables artists to augment their skills and envision new possibilities. AI-generated suggestions, prompts, or compositions can inspire artists, pushing the boundaries of their imagination and encouraging them to explore uncharted territories.
4. Enhanced Efficiency and Productivity:
AI streamlines mundane tasks, such as data analysis, research, or repetitive design work, freeing up artists' time to focus on more meaningful and expressive aspects of their craft. This increased efficiency allows artists to delve deeper into their creativity and produce more thoughtful, original works.
5. Preservation and Revival of Artistic Traditions:
AI can play a pivotal role in preserving and reviving traditional artistic techniques. By digitizing historical artworks and sharing valuable knowledge, AI can aid in passing down cultural heritage and artistic traditions to future generations.
6. Embracing Hybrid Creativity:
The future of creativity is likely to be characterized by hybrid collaborations between humans and AI. Artists can harness AI tools to create novel combinations of media, blending traditional craftsmanship with AI-generated elements, resulting in entirely new art forms.
Conclusion:
AI is not a threat to traditional artists; instead, it opens doors to a world of endless creative possibilities. By empowering the average person with accessible tools and supporting artists with efficiency and inspiration, AI fosters a vibrant and diverse creative society. The coexistence of AI and traditional artists promises an exciting future where human imagination and AI ingenuity merge to enrich our artistic landscape. Embracing AI as a creative ally will be the key to unlocking a new era of artistic expression and innovation.

Rambhajo’s: Adorning Future Generations with a Timeless Jewellery Saga
Tumblr media
In a world where fast fashion dominates, Rambhajo stands as a beacon of heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation. This storied jewelry house is not just preserving tradition — it’s reimagining it for tomorrow. Combining centuries‑old techniques with AI‑enabled design, Rambhajo weaves a narrative of legacy, adaptability, and enduring beauty, destined to grace future generations.
From Humble Origins to Iconic Heritage
The story of Rambhajo began in a small Indian atelier, where skilled artisans crafted each piece by hand. Their vision: create jewelry that transcended time, loved today and forever cherished tomorrow. With roots in royal patronage and local customs, Rambhajo earned trust through its commitment to quality and cultural resonance.
As the business passed through generations, it remained anchored in family values. Elders imparted lessons in gemstone sourcing, metal purity, and aesthetic harmony. Today, Rambhajo blends that heritage with a global sensibility, while staying true to its artisanal soul.
Jewellery as a Cultural Conversation
For Rambhajo, each piece is more than an ornament — it’s a cultural ambassador. Traditional designs draw from mythology, architecture, and regional arts. Whether it’s a Mughal-style necklace, temple-inspired earrings, or tribal motifs in bangles, Rambhajo celebrates India’s rich mosaic.
But the brand doesn’t stop there. A growing line features fusion pieces — mixing Indian sensibilities with global aesthetics. These creations resonate with discerning customers who honor tradition yet embrace modernity. With every collection, Rambhajo sparks a dialogue between past and present.
H4: AI‑Infused Design Innovation
Underpinning this cultural continuity is Rambhajo’s bold embrace of AI design tools. These intelligent systems analyze style preferences, historical patterns, and ergonomic fit, enabling faster prototyping while preserving artisanal depth. Examples include:
AI‑generated motif combinations: blending floral, geometric, and ethnic forms into fresh jewels
Virtual try‑ons using augmented reality: helping customers visualize heirloom pieces before committing
Material optimization: AI‑suggested alloys and gem cuts that balance durability with luster
Predictive trend analysis: identifying emerging aesthetic shifts to guide creative direction
By treating AI as a collaborator — not a replacement — Rambhajo enhances creativity without losing soul.
Training Artisans for the New Frontier
In Rambhajo’s workshops, custom machines hum alongside traditional tools. Master craftsmen are learning to collaborate with AI platforms — adjusting CAD‑generated designs, overseeing virtual prototypes, refining 3‑D printed wax models. This cross‑training ensures that each jewel retains its human signature.
Workshops also include sessions in digital literacy, pattern analysis, and AR app usage. In doing so, Rambhajo positions its workforce for the future — artisans equipped to blend heritage with digital precision.
Signature Collections & Global Reach
Rambhajo’s legacy shines through its vibrant collections:
“Heritage Heirloom” series: Classic kundan, polki, and meenakari designs restored with modern fit and finish
“Modern Mingle” line: Light, layered necklaces and ear cuffs for cosmopolitan wear
“Ceremonial Couture”: Exquisite bridal sets combining AI‑crafted symmetry with handcrafted detailing
“Eco‑Ethnic” range: Recycled metals and responsibly sourced gemstones, using AI‑assisted traceability
These collections are showcased in flagship salons from Jaipur to Mumbai, in curated online boutiques, and at international design exhibitions. By 2025, Rambhajo plans to enter key global markets, emphasizing both heritage and sustainability.
Awards and Artisan Recognition
Due to its exceptional quality and innovation, Rambhajo has earned accolades:
National Craft Excellence Award, for preserving traditional techniques
Innovation in Jewellery Design Award, for successful AI‑artisanal collaborations
Featured in international publications highlighting cultural sustainability and design tech integration
Beyond awards, Rambhajo celebrates its artisans — offering scholarships, fairs, and guild membership. These programs help ensure continuity of craftsmanship for future generations.
Sustainability as Core Value
A central tenet of Rambhajo’s mission is stewardship of people and planet. They have embedded sustainable practices across operations, such as:
Ethically sourced gemstones with AI‑verified provenance
Eco‑friendly packaging using plant‑based materials
Waste‑reduction methods like casting remelt systems and recycling scraps
Partnership with NGOs for artisans’ health, social security, and education
This holistic approach ensures that every piece, from source to showcase, supports an ethical legacy.
Heirs of Craft — Training the Next Generation
To build continuity, Rambhajo runs Rambhajo Craft Academies in artisan communities:
Apprenticeship programs combining ancient skills with CAD, AR, and quality control
Community libraries of patterns, designs, and gem stories — now digitally archived
Entrepreneurial mentoring — helping artisans launch micro‑enterprises using Rambhajo tools and networks
Graduates emerge as ambassadors of both craft and innovation, ensuring that future generations carry forward the craft with dignity.
Celebrating Journeys and Stories
Each Rambhajo piece carries stories — of the artisans who made them, the patrons who wear them, and the cultures they symbolize. That narrative focus becomes central to both marketing and experience:
Bespoke packaging includes story tags: “This ring was handcrafted by Sita from Udaipur…”
Digital design files include artisan signatures and creation photographs
Interactive online galleries let customers explore heritage inspirations and digital prototypes
Virtual design sessions use AI‑based AR to co‑create heirloom pieces with distant clients
These initiatives deepen emotional meaning, making jewellery not just seen — but felt.
Digital Customer Experience
Rambhajo enhances engagement through:
AR‑enabled virtual try-ons, letting customers test sparkle and fit
AI chat assistants to guide style selection, sizing advice, and product care
Customer design portals for co‑creation and tracking production stages
Post‑sales AR support: care tips overlaid on physical products for cleaning and handling
This fusion of technology and warmth elevates service while preserving artisanal charm.
Future Innovation Aspirations
Looking ahead, Rambhajo plans to pilot:
AI‑curated smart showcases that adapt displays to viewer preferences
Blockchain certification embedded in every item for provenance tracking
3D‑printed metal prototypes to accelerate design without compromising finish
Global artisan network using AI for skill‑matching and collaborative co‑branding
These ventures aim to keep Rambhajo at the forefront of jewellery heritage and innovation.
Words from the Founder
The visionary behind Rambhajo often shares:
“Design is dialogue between culture and future.”
“AI is my ally — it listens faster, learns patterns, yet only humans can hear the heart.”
“Every jewel we create is a promise for tomorrow’s lineage.”
These lines underscore the brand’s poetic and practical mission.
Legacy that Shines On
Through its seamless fusion of heritage, craftsmanship, and digital innovation, Rambhajo is more than a jewelry designer — it is a cultural custodian and creative pioneer. Its mission is clear: adorn future generations with pieces that carry stories, sustainability, and soul.
By honoring artisans, embracing AI, and pushing sustainability forward, Rambhajo ensures that jewelry remains not only a symbol of status but a testament to legacy, creativity, and ethical purpose. Their saga reminds us that true adornment is not just on the surface — it sparkles through time.

Made-to-Order Jewelry: A Future-Forward Business Model
In an age defined by personalization, sustainability, and thoughtful consumption, the made-to-order jewelry model is emerging as a standout strategy for modern brands.
It’s a model that prioritizes meaning over mass production, individuality over inventory and it’s shaping the future of jewelry retail in powerful ways. Marcasite stone
Tumblr media
What Is Made-to-Order Jewelry?
Made-to-order jewelry refers to pieces that are crafted only after a customer places an order. Rather than producing items in bulk and storing them in warehouses, artisans and brands wait until there is demand before beginning production.
This approach allows for customizations such as stone type, metal finish, sizing, or even engraving giving customers a more personalized experience while reducing excess stock and waste.
Why Consumers Are Embracing It
Today’s consumers are looking for more than just a product. They want a connection. Made-to-order jewelry offers just that:
Personalization: The ability to select or tweak design elements makes the piece more meaningful.
Exclusivity: The customer receives something unique, crafted just for them.
Transparency: Knowing when, how, and where a piece is made fosters trust and emotional connection.
Buyers are willing to wait longer if they know the piece is being made with intention, skill, and care.
A Solution to Overproduction
Mass production in the fashion and accessories industry has led to overstock, markdowns, and environmental waste. Made-to-order models drastically reduce this risk. Brands only produce what they sell nothing more.
This leaner, more responsible approach is particularly appealing to eco-conscious consumers and helps small studios maintain quality without overextending their resources.
Tumblr media
Supporting Artisan Craftsmanship
The made-to-order model also provides breathing room for artisans. Instead of rushing to meet the demands of large, generic inventories, they can focus on one piece at a time. This pace supports better craftsmanship and deeper pride in the work.
For heritage techniques like hand engraving, stone setting, or filigree this slower model is essential. It preserves tradition while delivering excellence.
Built-In Storytelling
Each made-to-order piece has a journey. From consultation to design selection, through production and final polishing, brands can share the behind-the-scenes process with their audience. This storytelling adds emotional value and invites customers into the brand’s creative world.
Videos, photos, and updates during the production phase deepen anticipation and build a stronger customer relationship even before delivery.
Challenges to Consider
While the benefits are many, the model also presents challenges:
Longer lead times: Customers must be willing to wait days or weeks.
Inventory forecasting: Brands must manage raw materials without knowing exact demand.
Scalability: Growth must be paced, ensuring production capacity doesn’t compromise quality.
However, these challenges can be managed with clear communication, streamlined systems, and skilled production teams.
Leveraging Technology
Modern tools like 3D modeling, digital customization interfaces, and AI-assisted design previews make the made-to-order process more efficient and user-friendly. Customers can visualize changes before committing, and artisans can prototype with greater speed and precision.
Technology bridges the gap between bespoke craftsmanship and scalable commerce.
Tumblr media
A Model for Sustainability and Meaning
Made-to-order jewelry aligns with the slow fashion movement. It rejects the disposable mindset and reintroduces thoughtfulness into consumption. Each piece is made because someone truly wants it not because it was pushed into market by default.
This conscious approach appeals to buyers who value ethical choices, emotional connection, and long-term ownership.
Conclusion: Made-to-Order, Made to Last
In a world where speed often eclipses substance, made-to-order jewelry invites us to pause, personalize, and prioritize meaning. It’s not just a production model it’s a philosophy. A promise of quality, responsibility, and connection.
For both artisans and consumers, it offers a path forward that’s not only more sustainable, but more soulful. And in that, it reveals the future of jewelry not just worn, but cherished.

The Golden Era of Craftsmanship (1900s-1950s)
Back in the early 20th century, luxury cars were all about bespoke craftsmanship. Brands like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Cadillac weren’t just making cars—they were creating works of art. With wooden dashboards, plush leather seats, and a smooth, whisper-quiet ride, these vehicles were designed for the elite. It wasn’t about speed or technology back then—it was about sheer opulence and prestige.

As the decades rolled on, luxury started getting a dose of performance. The 1960s and ’70s saw cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class redefining automotive safety and technology, while BMW and Jaguar infused sporty excitement into their luxury models. Features we take for granted today—automatic transmissions, air conditioning, power steering—became standard, making luxury cars as comfortable to drive as they were to sit in.
