Then everything was water bottles and stacked boxes poured through the sweating people machine beneath the West way. Truckloads of goods and many millions of pounds came, for an unknown number of living and the funerals of many dead.

The social changers and the revolutionaries didn’t bring goods or money, because they know better than to fall for charity. They had ideas and their own Facebook stati - calls to action, or to silence, to riot, or to calm - that ricocheted around the blue farm.  

Really, picking their way through the streets still laced with cyanide, that summer’s ash-snow settling around their ironic boots, they didn’t know what to do and they didn’t want to think about it. They condemned each other’s ideas and meetings and turns of phrase. They knew better than to fall for it. They plucked a grieving resident or a sufficiently abject looking charlatan from the crowd and clambered on their shoulders to reach the kind of authenticity that meant they didn’t have to think, and that they had a human shield incase anyone accused them of falling for anything. It was tough for them - confusing - when two Black people disagreed.

June’s heat, the frenzied human chains and the ferries of goods, curdled into grey suits and offices. We said it was shocking, that it was awful, an atrocity, unspeakable, unimaginable. Like a war zone, but here. Like a refugee camp, but here. Like one of those burning sweatshops, but here. In Britain, that is, in Britain.

There were people there who had fled Britains bombs to survive its waters and burn in its homes. People who fled because when the keep Britain white mob and the nazi Cambridge graduates found out they survived, they said thank god, now we don’t have to count their dead or care for their living. Thank god, now can just deport them. Thank god, at least they were Muslim. At least the 30 mil can be spent on a real emergency.

The Tory outside the BBC said he couldn’t believe it, that that would happen here - in Britain, that is. He’d never live there, of course, he said not in a million years. There was only one fire staircase. You couldn’t pay him to live there. She suggested they may not have had a choice. ‘Exactly!’, he said, ‘choice. There isn’t enough choice’.

It killed a person before they were born. But that sinister 'fake news' (and us) insisted there was more. More dead. More numbers. And then Ed asked why, isn’t 70 enough? And then Kareem asked, did they die or us?
