so guys how about we talk about how colloquial language is so much more information-dense I fuckin love it

So in my last post I talked about a play called The Rivals which has a character named Mrs Malaprop from whom we get the term ‘malapropism’.

Now I have seen pages of words trying to describe the attitude to social climbers that shows through in Sheridan’s portrayal of Mrs Malaprop.

But all I said was:

the tone of the play is a bit ‘lol at this oik tryna act like she’s People’

so ‘the tone of the play’ is ordinary English. ‘(Something) is a bit’ followed by a quote is a usage similar to ‘she was like’ in place of ‘she said’ - it indicates that this is an approximation of what the tone of the play is like, and that what I am about to describe is not the whole of what the tone of the play is.

the verb ‘lol’ has a meaning distinct from ‘laugh’; if we are to ‘lol at’ something it is certainly not literally expected that we will laugh, but it is expected that we will derive some amusement. The use of ‘at’ is clearly parallel to the usage in standard English; when we say ‘laugh at (a person)’ we imply mockery and ‘lol’ is close enough to ‘laugh’ that we get that from this sentence.

‘oik’ is great because not only does it tell us something about Mrs Malaprop (that she is of lower social class than the implied viewpoint, for instance), but also that our imaginary viewpoint uses the word ‘oik’ tells us said viewpoint is upper class, probably English, and a snob

‘tryna’ doesn’t really add anything but flow tbh

‘act like (they’re) people’, if sincere, is generally applied to animals wearing people clothes, which gives us a very vivid image of how the upper classes in/watching/writing the play view social climbers

and finally the random capitalisation of ‘People’, in this context, means ‘the proper or correct version of the thing being capitalised’. This means our viewpoint character distinguishes between ‘people’ and ‘People’, telling us that Malaprop’s problem in their eyes is that she is not proper or correct people and is trying to act like she is

language is fucking awesome and proper and correct language is frequently the most cumbersome and shitty type of language
