JC, just days after he barely got any credit for running pillar to post to save his brother with barely any rest and succeeding in saving him, had his core melted, and he had all of a week (maybe?) to come to terms with the fact that he didn't have it anymore before WWX gave up his core for him, after which he became a sect leader overnight without the support of his family in the middle of a war which started because his entire sect was decimated, and right when he thinks everything is okay and the war has ended his brother defects and his sister is married into a different sect, his brother in law is killed by his brother, his sister dies for his brother and he's alone again, (except for a child he's now responsible for).

This obviously traumatized him and he acted very negatively towards both WWX and all demonic cultivators. Especially WWX.

But that doesn't erase who he was before all of this, or even during it. He loved his brother and gave up his life for him. He was a boy king who made his sect one of the great sects after it was razed in the war. He raised his nephew while grieving for his family and raised him well, (JL is a bit immature and arrogant, but he's intelligent, righteous, and strong willed).

In this essay I will-

Probably the reason JC and WWX view their parents blatant favouritism so differently is because JC sees him as a true sibling and gets hurt when his father gave more of his love and attention to him but WWX only saw himself as a servants son so he believed that no matter how much love and attention he'll receive he won't be more than JC

This hits especially hard when you realise that WWX is right. His fathers last words to him were, "look after my kids", but on the other hand JC actually loves him like a brother and in spite of his jealousy of WWX still gives up his golden core and life for him

The dichotomy between JC and JFM is so poetic as JFM constantly showered WWX with love and affection, but in his final moments saw him as lesser than his children, and JC spent those exact same years being jealous of his brother but never loved him any less

saw a fic the other day where Yanli was like "my husband's half-brother is creepy and horrible and I'm never letting him hold my baby" and I was just like ??????? umm ding dong you're wrong ???? like she wouldn't see this bundle of deeply familiar traits and traumas and just go "I'm going to take care of that small tired man whether he likes it or not :) :) :)"

Me too!  I like the idea of James as a father figure or big brother to Axel, even if it's somewhat reluctantly.  All depends on what he’s planning, I guess.

Yes!  Even if he's much younger now (since DC de-aged many of their characters and then explained it by ten years being stolen from them)...Owen is very missed.  And with the time travel aspect, maybe he doesn't even have to be de-aged at all for Digger to have a son his age.

Yknow what I would've loved to see the crows do in the shadow and bone series?

What they were actually doing in canon!

Instead of flashbacks we would have seen the really ICONIC scenes

Like Kaz rising out of the harbour and clawing up the ranks in the barrel

Inej learning all the skills she so masterfully applies during her time in the dregs

Nina learning to become a child soldier and seeing the war from their perspective

Jesper being all energetic and happy learning the craft of guns

Matthias getting taken in by Brum after his village is massacred and learning his prejudices

A certain Jan Van Eck bringing a young girl home named Alys

All we see is a snapshot of their lives during the war...

Cut to two years later in SoC

Kaz walking around with a cane and a gang under him

Inej being one of his seconds and Jesper the other

Nina working in a brothel and Matthias in prison

Can you imagine the drama when wei wuxian comes back? He would know jiang cheng cares about him! I would sell my soul to read this wth

MDZS AU where Jiang Cheng realizes that Lan Sizhui is the Wen orphan that Wei Wuxian took care off during the Burial Mounds arc, decides that's close enough to qualify him as Nephew, declares that no Nephew of His (much less a surrogate son of Wei Wuxian's) is going to be raised in the Cloud Recedes, and immediately launches into a custody battle with Lan Wangji.

But since neither Jiang Cheng or Lan Wangji can acknowledge that Sizuhi has any connection to Wei Wuxian, both begin steadfastly and stubbornly insisting that he is a Cultivator of peerless potential and skill and he belongs in their sect thank you very much, and would clearly be very unhappy in the other's. This confuses the hell out of the already mystified Cultivation world, who had barely adjusted yet to gossiping about Sizhui being Wangji's illegitimate child by mysterious love affair.

(Eventually the common consensus in the rumor mills is that both JC and LW where in love with Sizhui's mother and both believe themselves to be Sizhui's real father.)

(LW couldn't care less what gossips say, but JC has to bite his tongue till it bleeds to avoid telling anyone the truth in a fit of anger.)

(It was Nie Huaisang who put that rumor out in the first place, partly to troll JC, partly because, in a way, it's a little true.)
