Активы и пассивы
Tumblr media

Why doesn't diamond steven have a solid form; Is flesh steven still part gem?
It's my interpretation of gems in this AU, more particularly Steven's gem half. It's a way I wished to depict gem Steven (and how I wished he had been depicted in the show but that's neither here nor there)
If you recall, the gemspace from chapter 1 has a very visually similar, less corporeal form of gem Steven.

Chapter 21: The Barrier
Reformation is by no means a refreshing, merciful process this time around.
Every other time Ruby has poofed and slipped into that formless, transitory space (which… is a lot of times, given her origins as a lowly, overworked grunt of a soldier), the experience was something of a reprieve from reality. Her body and surface consciousness are stalled, locked in state at the split second she was knocked out of commission, but her subconscious is free to ponder and postulate at whim. In this space, she’s passingly aware of how she poofed… of her lived experience directly before said poofing… of the faintest pressure fluttering against her gemstone… but she has no way to perceive what’s happening beyond the hazy plane of this mindscape.
She has no way of knowing if her dear Sapphy is okay.
They fell in battle. That much she does know. They took a calculated risk… sacrificing their safety in order to secure better odds of success for the others instead. Her own gems aside, it was by and large the best possible outcome Garnet could perceive.
But did their gambit work? Did the barrier go up in time? Were Amethyst and Pearl victorious in their mission, or did that poor, flighty soul of a corruption escape their clutches forever? Split from Sapphire’s power of foresight, Ruby has no clue what future will greet her once she takes full form again, and it terrifies her. Thus, reformation brings no comfort this time around. No mercy. No answers.
She can’t linger here this time around.
She just can’t.
So she rushes through the motions. Selects an old favorite fit from her memory banks, not even bothering with further customization beyond the singular addition of her wedding band. She stretches out her light… forcibly pressing herself out of the suffocating confines of her gemspace…
And when she finally comes to on that fine grained beach, stumbling for balance as she resumes full consciousness from the last millisecond of battle she remembers, the first thing that grabs her notice is a familiar resonance rushing to her side. A gloved hand links with hers, lithe fingers gliding across the gemstone on her palm. Ruby’s form jitters a little, an anxious (but oh so relieved) shudder riding through her core.
“Welcome back, darling,” Sapphire says, planting a whisper-light kiss against her temple.
She tilts her head to meet her gaze square on. Same as her, she’s reformed. Her outfit hasn’t changed much, but her hair is tied back now… fastened with a small silver clip in the shape of a star. Not only that, but there’s a subtle curl to the end of her elegant tresses that definitely wasn’t present before.
She’s beautiful, and despite every other valid stressor that’s fighting for her attention this troubled hour, Ruby struggles to take her eyes off her.
As a result, her first words devolve into nothing more than a nervous stammer.
“Sapphire, you- you’re not—” she pauses, begins again— “I mean, uh… h-how long was I out?”
She shifts her touch to her shoulder, the gentle thrum of her light a blissful reassurance. “Not much longer than I was, don’t worry.”
“So, um… the mission? Did we—”
“Yes,” she confirms with a sharp and precise nod. “We succeeded. The barrier is up, and Amethyst and Pearl are unharmed.”
“And Steven? He— he’s safe now, right? We found him?”
“He’s… contained,” Sapphire answers her simply, not providing any further context. “Come, now. I’ll take you to the others.”
Her wife gestures down the shoreline, upon which she can just barely make out a gargantuan pink dome half obscured beyond the palms. A tired, anguished roar reverberates all the way across the beach to where they stand, no louder than a distant whisper from here. Her first steps towards that uncertain horizon are woefully unsteady as a result. No matter how this matter concludes, there’s no doubt that this haunting sound will be forever imprinted within her memory. A vital crumb of information slams into the forefront as she contemplates this scene… the sobering reminder that Garnet had already pieced together this fragmented mystery before she risked her life and love for the team. She gasps, shaking her head in utter disbelief.
No.
No, it can’t be. Surely all this has to be some kind of twisted nightmare.
What little of Sapphire’s expression is able to be perceived all but crumples the next instant she glances her way head on.
“Ruby… please understand. I didn’t wish to overwhelm you with too much when you reformed, so… I carried you further down the beach. Away from the barrier. Away from—”
“Steven,” Ruby completes, her tone utterly defeated. “That’s him in there, isn’t it?”
She turns her hooded gaze towards the ground, pressing a folded, quivering hand to her lips.
“Sapphy…”
“Let’s just focus on getting back to the ship,” she says, fighting to keep her demeanor poised and even with each and every word. “Everyone will be waiting for us there.”
__
The Roaming Eye may provide a temporary escape from the heart wrenching sound of that creature Steven thrashing and roaring outside, but it by no means erases the solemn gravity of their current situation in its entirety.
Ruby struggles to avoid the temptation to bite at her knuckles as she paces to and fro across the ship’s width. Sapphire, Amethyst, and Pearl are still locked in a drawn-out discussion about how their mission kinda fell off the rails at the end, but at the moment she feels far too frazzled by the devastating reality beyond the walls of the ship to join in. Or even listen at all, really. But that’s fine. She doesn’t have much to contribute. And in any case, she basically had this same conversation with Sapphy like, twenty minutes ago, while they were hiking their way back to base camp.
“I chose the narrow path,” she told her then. “It was either allow ourselves to get poofed and give the others a fighting chance, or risk the charges or one of us getting cracked in his defense… after which he'd run away again, lost forever.”
So, she took a risk. A massive one. There was never any guarantee that Amethyst and Pearl would succeed in closing out the mission on their own, but as long as all the charges were activated there was a chance they’d finish the job. A far greater likelihood of chance than if Garnet prioritized her own gems and dodged out of the way, at least.
Ruby doesn’t resent Garnet for making that choice in the heat of it all, but stars, does she wish it didn’t lead to Sapphire and her being split up.
“Anyways, all that aside, I called Lapis,” Pearl says then, yanking Ruby back to the present as she spins in her chair to face the rest of the group. “She’s on her way. Once we’re absolutely positive that the barrier will hold, we’ll send for the others.”
“An’ you’re positive that thing won’t hurt ‘em?” Amethyst asks, glancing out the Roaming Eye’s frosted windshield.
Encased in his gargantuan, pink-scaled corrupted form, Steven thrashes aimlessly against the dome’s rose tinted surface, throwing his head back as he wails.
Pearl visibly cringes, but does her best to keep a brave face. “It shouldn’t hurt him any more than a destabilizer field would hurt us.”
“It won’t cause any permanent harm,” Sapphire chimes in. “That much I can see for sure.”
“I tried to get him to calm down earlier,” Amethyst says, her expression deeply downcast as she leans against the wall, her cheek squishing against the cool metal interior of the ship. “Like… I thought if, maybe we could get through to him, he’d just… revert back. But I couldn’t do anything to help. All he did was start to pace around and slam his head against the barrier.”
Ruby shuffles upon her feet, not really having the mental fortitude to meet anyone’s eyes in such fraught, distressing circumstances. Her voice is quiet and uncertain as she opens her mouth to speak to the others. “So… what do we do now? We finally have proof that that’s Steven, so… so how do we get him back-?”
Everyone on the ship swings to glance at Sapphire. She stiffens, folding her hands in front of her as she peers into the peerless avenues of their potential futures. And then, with a shaky and altogether terrified exhale:
“I… I don’t know.”

The Small Net
I think I first got online around 1996. And I miss that early Internet. It was a simpler world of weird websites and individual blogs. Nowadays the Internet is dominated by addictive social media, political mobs, an ocean of e-commerce, and pernicious advertising.
And web design has evolved beyond recognition too. In the early days it was common to hand-roll html files. Now there are a plethora of frontend and backend frameworks to choose from, each with an iceberg of dependencies.
I’d heard of a movement called the small net (aka smolnet or small web) as an antidote to all of this but it hadn’t quite clicked.
I recently found an entertaining and intriguing article proposing PDFs as the antidote to complex modern web design. I emailed the author in appreciation and he tipped me off about a project called Gemini. Suddenly the small net clicked...
The Gemini protocol is designed to be a simpler equivalent to http. It exists in a parallel universe to the Internet referred to as gemspace. Websites on Gemini are known as capsules and their addresses start with gemini:// instead of https:// You can’t browse gemspace natively through a normal web browser - you have to use a special browser or a proxy. Check out Wobbly from a web browser, Elaho on iOS, or portal.mozz.us.
Gemini markup is constrained to titles, text, links, bullets and quotes. There is no other formatting and no CSS. Images and links can’t be rendered inline with text. Links must be on their own line. And images can only be linked to. Luckily emojis are supported 😉 These constraints result in a focus on content and creativity.
It’s common for capsules to include a gemlog - equivalent to a blog - and to link to other capsules that their creators admire. This makes browsing gemspace a very personal experience - which is exactly the intention.
Browsing Gemini feels like the early Internet and I love it. Come and explore Gemini with me. And if you’d like a head-start on creating your own capsule, check out flounder 🐟

Note
If a gem, such as Amethyst, eats, and she poofs, does the food become freed or does it retreat into her gemstone?
To prevent damage to valuable items, gems, by default, have all items within their forms transferred to their gemspace when they are poofed.

(Tell us all about Pearl culture! We need it!)
Tumblr media
bellum.   some of these are headcanons that @nacreousknight and I have been squawking at each other about, some of them are things I’ve thought of – but really you have them to blame for even getting my brain into overdrive thinking about this shit in the first place, so   8^)   these are all going to definitely be included in my portrayals of my various Pearls
also a lot of these are as they relate to Nacre or my other Pearl OCs because they’ve taken over my blog’s Pearl-essence (   hehehehehe   ) and I also don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes if they have different headcanons so–
Pearls are touchy-feely !   with each other at least.   most other Gems don’t touch them unless it’s a painful touch, and they’re obviously not allowed to touch anyone else without explicit permission.   plus they can’t always speak their minds around everyone even if they’re talking to each other, so a lot of the inter-Pearl communication is touch-based.   it’s very noticeable in Nacre because for a Gem who everyone thinks is a stoic, she’s always got that natural urge to touch people in some way.
the Gem language has words for “sister” and “daughter” as concepts – i.e., sister-in-arms, a Gem of the same type as you, are what “sister” is used for, especially if they’re from the same batch or same kindergarten.   “daughter” exists mostly among Matrons to refer to the Gems they’ve created, although it might also exist among Gems who have secretly created their own offspring.   however, there’s no real word for “mother” ; the closest word the Gems have for that is “Matron”, the Gem who created you, a maternal presence, someone who you hold in utmost reverence.   the only Gems that Pearls respect more than Nacre are the Diamonds.   some of them don’t even respect their OWNERS as much as they respect Nacre.
Pearls who have shitty owners often fantasize about having Nacre as an owner, don’t you dare @ me on this
there are some Pearls who have developed a sub-dialect of communication that has to do with humming or vocalization !   Fuchsia and Abalone are some of them because the Pearls who communicate this way in addition to touch tend to be bolder personalities.
because they’re formed on super watery planets, Pearls tend to be very good swimmers !!
they like to share their memories if they’ve learned something they consider useful or interesting.
Pearls in general like to experiment with styling their forms, hair, and outfits – especially during Era 3 when they have a lot of freedom to do so.   when the opportunity presents itself, they’ll even chatter excitedly to each other about their own opinions for what they think would look good on each other.
some of them can be cutthroat in finding ways to make sure they look better than other Pearls.   because they’re at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak, they don’t have many opportunities to better their station.   although it’s not overwhelmingly the norm, Pearls have been known to sabotage one another.   it’s usually the Pearls whose owners are strict and mistreat  them who feel the need to do this ; it comes from a place of “ if she looks worse, then I look better ” and although it’s not VERY common, it can absolutely be vicious.
for Pearls whose owners have more than one Pearl, there’s even more competition.   the Diamonds are the ones who approve requests for Pearls, but because requesting a Pearl when you already have one is seen as ungrateful and questioning the Authority’s decisions, it’s not common for a Gem to own two or more Pearls.   the Gems who do have more than one Pearl almost certainly had the second / third / etc. given as a gift for exceptional performance rather than requesting her.   Pearls who are not their owner’s only Pearl can become true friends, but more often they’ll fall into “frenemy” territory.   they’ll be rivals competing to be their owner’s current favorite, especially if their owner is not a kind personality, although their bond as Pearls is strong enough that they typically won’t do anything that would risk a consequence as horrible as the other being shattered.
Nacre’s official title that most other Gems and some Pearls address her by is “Her Iridescence”.   otherwise, Pearls call her “My Matron” or “Her Brilliance / Radiance / etc.” or simply address her by name.   rarely, some Pearls will address her with an archaic Gem word which translates literally to “Nurturer”.
other Gems’ space inside their gemstone is pretty big, but still limited.   Pearls’ gemspace is almost totally unlimited.   these bad bitches can fit SO MUCH trauma in them !!!
Pearls as a rule tend to be very tall and wiry.   they’re the slimmest, most delicate Gem type, and stand maybe half a foot to a foot shorter than most Quartzes.   because of this they have a habit of bending / almost perching to talk to shorter people or simply if they need to do something close to the ground.
if they’re speaking to a Gem who isn’t their owner who is high in status, they may close their eyes as they speak.   this is because they’ve developed a superstition that laying eyes on someone in high rank who isn’t their owner is rude and disrespectful, and will bring bad luck on them and / or their owner.   some Pearls will close their eyes, some will just avoid eye contact with the other Gem, and some will actually go balls to the wall and face another direction entirely while they speak to the other Gem.
they have a goddess, Ender Pearl, whom they pray to for, most notably, beauty and safety.   nearly every Pearl who comes into existence is created believing in her, but whenever a Pearl is mistreated or shattered by an owner, there are waves of lost faith in Ender among the Pearls.   if she’s supposed to be watching over them and answering their prayers and protecting them, then why would she allow such things to happen ?
there are Pearls in existence who have completely lost faith for Nacre as well, because of the same reason they lose faith in Ender.   ouch.
Nacre’s kindergartens are seen as less successful than other Gems’, producing maybe 75 % of what other Gems produce.   it’s not because these lost Pearls never emerge or don’t live long.   it’s because Nacre takes defective Pearls and shuttles them off to planets where they can live without worrying.   she sometimes does this with other Gem types, if she’s able to do so, but if anyone ever found out, she’d be shattered in a heartbeat.   in Era 3, she can now be honest about it, and new kindergartens are going to be difficult to produce ; some Gems don’t believe that someone as unassuming and unobtrusive and nice as Nacre could do something like smuggling defective Gems to other planets.   there’s a lot of controversy surrounding it, but the fact is, she DID actually do it.
all Pearls love their mommy don’t @ me on this either
all Pearls are 10000 % babey and if you try to fight me on this one I’ll actually come for ur kneecaps AND ur toes thank u

Does Nacre have a weapon (not counting her pussy)
bellum.   aw c’mon, her pussy is her greatest weapon !!   it’s dangerous as fuck !!!   XD
... she does have a weapon tho !   a few thousand years after she was made, Native Bismuth made her a sword.
“   Just in case, even though Pearls don’t really do battles or anything.   Can’t be too careful, you know ?   ”
it’s ornate, beautiful, and also extremely functional.   it was only after the Rebellion that she began to have her Quartz guards seriously train her with it.
during Era 2, she keeps it inside her gemspace unless she has to defend someone.   she doesn’t need anyone knowing that a Pearl has a weapon ; that would absolutely be a problem.
during Era 3, she will often wear her sword to events, strapped to her side while she’s dressed up -- another symbol of new freedom and how any Gem can do and be anything they want.
it’s not a typical weapon in that it isn’t one she manifested from her gem herself, nor has she ever tried to do that, but her sword is the weapon she uses in nearly any situation where she needs a weapon.
