ok here are my Thoughts on gin noto

under cut bc it got long lol

first off, he is very strong representation. as in, i think this might be the platonic ideal of a transmasc character. which has its good points and bad.

sweet-p’s arc was rooted in some obviously transphobic jokes/points/etc but at its core, her arc felt well-intentioned and overall she was definitely portrayed as one of the most sympathetic of the musicians (who are antagonists but certainly not outright villains, which the musician route makes abundantly clear). she also is not, like, described as trans per se, mostly as a crossdresser who loves cute things and wishes she were a cute girl (so like, she’s trans) and honestly her arc is about self-image and body dysmorphia in general (weight and age and outside perception are all major factors). and that’s what sets her apart from gin, gin is very much about Gender Dysphoria And Conforming To Societal Gender Roles first and foremost.

unlike sweet-p’s writing, gin’s doesn’t have any overt flaws to point to, which is why i had to mull it over for a while to figure out what was missing, and i think it’s because it is very much aimed at a cis audience. the narrative itself is perfectly fine, it’s the meta-narrative that bothers me.

when gin confesses that irl, he was assigned female at birth and presents as female in his day-to-day life, and asks the player, does this change anything, there is a right answer and a wrong answer. the wrong answer is to tell him that you don’t care what gender he is, it doesn’t change anything at all; gin perceives this as a half-assed, dismissive response said without thinking and becomes upset and it locks you out of the rest of his character episodes. the correct answer is to tell him that you don’t know, you’re not sure. maybe it does change things between the two of you. gin feels that this is a understandable position to take, like, of course it might be a big deal, it certainly feels like a big deal to him!

and yes, to someone who hasn’t encountered a trans person before, that’s probably a reasonable response. to me, specifically, a fellow transmasc person, i think i sorta laughed at this part because, like, the only thing that would change if a coworker or friend or whatever told me that they were actually stealth trans this whole time (and that’s being generous bc gin is Not Slick lmfao the foreshadowing for him being trans is super obvious to anyone who knows) i’d be like cool! love that for you. etc etc. bc transgenderism is Normal to me.

but the game assumes You Are A Cis Person Who Isn’t Sure How To React To Trans People. the game doesn’t let you be trans. there’s not a nonbinary option, despite having a cyborg for an antagonist and, more egregiously, a canonically nonbinary character in your party. (i’d say pronouns, but that’s not quite the same in japanese.) not that i was expecting that to be possible, but it is a clear separation of gameplay and story that hinders roleplay (in an rpg where your character’s backstory is almost completely undefined)!

this is not to say that gin is poorly written. like i said, he’s like the platonic ideal of representation. he’s easy to clock specifically because his experiences ring true; he’s always, always, always overcompensating and posturing “as a man”, he’s trying to conform to his own personal image of “what men do”, “how guy friendships work”, “what guys are interested in”. when asked why he gets along with women so well, he lies and says it’s because he has an, uh, older sister! so he’s spent a lot of time around women! he dresses trendy, but not too fashionably (because that’s feminine, he’s function over form allegedly), and the cut of his clothes is soooo. well. the silhouette is masculinizing, or at least androgynous, let’s say. he even wishes he were taller.

i’m pretty sure i’ve done most of those things. this is writing that either speaks from experience or understands the prompt and has done the goddamn research.

it is, however, very, VERY cool that he actually turns out to Not Be A Man, at least in the sense he’s always wanted to be. REALLY good nonbinary arc that i wish wasn’t constrained to, like, the last two character episodes. it’s the one interesting ‘twist’, and i love that it explains a lot of things about him! when he talks about working as a woman irl and busting his ass in heels, he sounds proud, even as he admits that presenting female always made him uncomfortable. and lo and behold, his catharsis effect sports a pair of gold heels! if he was just a hypermasculine trans man, that would be super uncomfortable, as if it were some sort of transphobic indicator of his ‘true self’ being feminine. but no, it’s because he’s hiding that aspect of himself. he repressed his masculine tendencies to conform to social norms, and then inadvertently did the same to his feminine side, but both are important. he likes the heels.

i also like that he’s bi and acknowledges that his relationships never worked out bc he hadn’t figured out his shit yet. it do be like that sometimes.

unfortunately, i think he’s also kind of boring? like, besides her wanting to be a cute girl, sweet-p had other stuff going on, she had that boke/tsukkomi routine with stork, she had a genuine love for yume-kawaii (whereas while gin has many interests, a not-insignificant part of those interests is male posturing), she was even a musician! i understand that gin’s blandness is On Purpose because he dislikes rocking the boat (but he hates posers, which was a genuinely interesting reaction from him that didn’t feature as strongly in his arc as i wanted. even kiriko comments on it), but doesn’t change the fact that he ain’t weird enough! can’t even be an only sane man bc he goes along with everyone’s bs lol

anyway gin is cool and well-written as a trans character but missing a bit otherwise. i’d still definitely love to hang out and get beef bowls and boba with him :)

Part 3; 2015

Being the first full year I had been writing songs and the year I took one semester on what I now call my summer camp, this was a very productive year for songs. Well, it was a productive year for lyrics, I actually did only finish half of the songs I started. My lyrics became a little less angry overall and focused more on storytelling.

Song 1 (pic1); Pyriphlegeton.

A song named after the greek myth of the flood of fire in the underworld keeping the tormented standing so they can endure more pain, this is a song where I've taken the perspective of a woman with an undefined mental illness. Some lines however can be read through a trans lens. Fun fact: I rapped the verses on this. No I am not kidding (also I am not a rapper)

This is a fun one in that I made it as a sort of theme song for a novel length story I was writing about a boy that lived in a world where people got their mind wiped in they stepped out of line (or what he later learn is actually a brainfog repressing your memories and identity). So while the lyrics could be taken as a queer metaphor in context it is more litteral. I didn't finish either the story or the song however.

One of the few times that I tried to write a party song. This was strange since I wrote as a typical Dane that drinks and loves parties (which I don't) but I do love this line a lot

One of the few songs with no real perspective character, instead it is about the passing of time and the ambivalent feeling I have about time in general.

A song I wrote as a tribute to the friends I've gotten in the three years of highschool (although some of the experiences mentioned go back to middleschool). One of the earlier examples of me using my own experiences in a song.

In this song I take the perspective of a lover feeling something is wrong with their partner but not knowing what or how to communicate their worry. It is very flowery/artsy which is fitting since the muse part is inspired by the muses of greek mythology.

This is a special case since it is a song that actually have two versions; one was very personal and read like a diary (version 1) and then there's one taking the perspective of a girl and a boy both having body image issues thereby depersonalising the story (version 2). And yet this line is so raw and trans coded that I cannot help but love it. I never finished this song.

I barely understand what you are saying but without context a few things; was this localization change recent or was it a ttyd Vivian thing where it happened 20 years ago? And was the original Japanese text being respectful or where they making fun of queer people? Was this trans women or really effeminate man who's written very badly? Like an example is birdo who is treated well now but she was being mad fun of in the 80s. Obvious queernes is barely being accepted now. I don't fully know the contex to this before i can judge for myself

Lie, part of it is that I’m bi and don’t want to pretend I’m not, so that’s not my label, but part of it is, when I picture lesbians I picture two women, but when I imagine myself with a woman… it feels right (and is right, when I’m dating one), but picturing myself as also a woman makes me feel itchy. Like I’m not a man, not exactly, I get why you said that and I’m not gonna get mad, but wait, hang on a minute.

Like I don’t want to feed into a heterosexist narrative by saying two feminine binary women is Wrong somehow or weird in general for people who aren’t me, it isn’t at all, but… what makes me feel comfortable is the idea that she’s a woman and I’m a Undefined Different Something, probably taking a more masculine role.

Or you know, the other person could also be AFAB enby, or again even a man, I’m bi… but if I think of myself as The Woman I feel like I’m going to suffocate., but if I think of myself as a ??? with a whatever they are it’s fine.

Which is why the whole discourse about how hets ask “which one is the woman” and that’s gross makes me feel vaguely guilty. If I’m dating a woman, obviously she is. She’s the one with the binary gender identity! (And if I’m dating a feminine man, obviously he is. He’s the one who likes that and I’m the one who likes him.)

Since I’m still trying to find someone, I’ve been trying to go on a LGBT (but mostly G) tabletop sessions irl. My thought process was: I dislike when relationships are wired towards some expectations of relationships (and romance) like you can see on dating website, so going to tabletop sessions is a nice way to focus on games and make relationships a separate and optional thing (like, we don’t have to talk outside of them, and there’s no forcing happening to like one another but cooperate or joke in games).

I’ve been going since a few months and pushed my anxiety toward covid apart for it, and forced myself to go even when not motivated, scared, etc. I like the games, I really do. But though I wouldn’t say I dislike the people I play with (at least not all), I don’t like them either. I have no specific feeling, and I can feel friendly when we talk about things, but I don’t like them. I wouldn’t want to hang out with them in other occasions. I often just especially wish I could play the games we play with other friends that I have (but can’t see cause covid/far away etc). 

And in the end, off-games conversations go back to the usual inquiry about whether or not I have someone, or any other general dating website-like questions. It gets back to this usual superficial feeling of “trying to make [forced] acquaintance”, forging relationships through something that doesn’t go naturally, sometimes it almost feel like “courtship” and ugh. It’s difficult to navigate that because I can’t say “well I’m sorry but I don’t especially like you and talking to you bores me to death, I just like playing” because first it’s rude, and also you’re going to see that person the next couple of weeks. What’s worse is that, even if we talk all the same language, there are still sometimes we can’t understand each other at all, and it is frustrating.

Also since it’s especially G, there is a weird tendency to consider people through their homosexuality rather than through being [complex] people and I can’t express how much I dislike this. It happens a bit everywhere though so I guess it can’t be helped. It seems like I have to choose whether I want that through being trans or being gay so fuck me. This is a large part of why I don’t say I’m trans or gay to most people ever. I learnt it the hard way the first times I tried this, and it sucked. People can’t help it.

I’m trying to determine a bit better what I want for a romantic relationship, and I have examples in my mind that are clear. I have relationships with which I could spend an undefined amount of time with the person and it would be okay with me, and the activity we would do wouldn’t bore me or make me want to go away independently of what it is, like even if I dislike the activity, doing it with that person is making it okay (Intimacy and friendship). We’d consider each other as people first, rather than all the weird boxes we make up based on whatever we see, hear, read, etc. This is what I want, but I want that with a guy who is open to dating me and doesn’t make me want to throw up when I see/smell him. It is such a fucking low bar at that point but all of my efforts have been a waste.

I’m still trying to widen my horizon and put myself in places where I could make new natural friendships. I’m still trying, but fuck it seems hopeless.

For the Character Opinion Meme, and...Pidge.

How I feel about this character I LOVE PIDGE OKAY?! She’s right behind Shiro and Allura in my VLD faves. I relate a lot to her, too. I also like peanut butter but not peanuts! I also avoid the outdoors!

All the people I ship romantically with this character My first ship for her was an undefined OC that was a hot woman who was partially cyborg (like Shiro but... MORE - more prosthetics, more entire body parts replaced); I’ve also shipped her with Lance and with an OC named Amue who is actually a super-advanced AI in a cutting edge shapeshifting robot body.

My non-romantic OTP for this character Hunk. Keith and Shiro are close, but... but Hunk. Hunk and Pidge complement each other really well: he builds things and she breaks (into) things. He’s more hardware, and she’s more software. They have some overlap, of course, but, in general, y’know? Also, I think Pidge sometimes focuses too much on whether or not she’s able to do something, whereas Hunk is more about whether or not they should do something. So she leads the way, showing what’s possible, and he tempers that with compassion. (Not that Pidge is unethical at all, but I think it’s easy for her to get swept up and lose focus on that. I mean... she did break into the Garrison.)

My unpopular opinion about this character I don’t give a damn if people ship an aged-up Pidge with Shiro. Ship and let ship, you do you. It’s not for me, but I’m not going to slam someone for it. It’s not really an unpopular opinion about Pidge herself, I guess though. Um. I like the headcanon of Pidge being a trans girl who had to go back into the closet when she went into the Garrison, and I want her to grow her hair back out. I don’t want Pidge to be a guy, because, well, because we need more female characters, dammit. 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. TRANS GIRL PIDGE?!  GROWING HER HAIR OUT?! For that matter, Pidge has that whole episode with the Olkari where she learns that we’re all connected to each other and that nature can be understood in computer terms, and then......................NOTHING. ARGH! I wanted to see more of that because that all fits in wonderfully with my personal set of spiritual beliefs and also because it was just awesome in general, but then it just gets DROPPED. We also don’t get to see Pidge bond with the rest of the team as much as she bonds with Hunk. v__v I’d better stop because we all know I will salt from here ‘til eternity about how VLD did all their characters wrong.

I might actually make my first* trans dragon if I pick the gold boy. Those are all Techne's babies and I had them so I could start developing what part Ice dragons play in the Xannite hierarchy, but Ive had some notions about how they deal with gender issues rolling around too, and I'd love to get into that more.

I made a post before about how they absolutely will not allow they/them pronouns during adolescent development because of all the memory/identity hijinks, and I cant imagine they'd smile on an amab dragon with 4-5 generations of cis female memories identifying as female, considering that usually represents anything from minor memory confounding to a complete breach of the young ego by the imprinted older ones. (Avoiding this exact problem is the reason why the majority of Xannites are female. First iteration trans males among them are more or less ignored because there are very few descendant lines with male memories in them to confound things. [Iterations after that on the other hand, similar situation] But sometimes exceptional imprinting rank yields cis males to previously female only lines, that's how Zo was born and even he had his fair share of days where he got bodyslammed by dysphoria and/or dysmorphia that technically wasnt his)

Speaking of my son, I imagine Zo meeting her and having war flashbacks to his grandmother bodyjacking him and he has to basically go "I dont want to be that guy, but are you certain that's actually you?" And then regardless of her (cold realist and therefore complicated) answer he immediately adopts her, and takes her to introduce the boys to their new sibling. Which Im sure goes just swell considering what iceborn xannites do.

*Aside from Eos, maybe but tbh Eos is more like a Crona character. Their sex/gender is Undefined so i cant really say if theyre trans or not.

This might seem phobic but I promise, if it does it is due to lack of education rather than malice, but would the Evan not being cis thing be hard for Connor (because Evan isn't male and I assume by gay you mean Connor likes guys because their gender is as of yet undefined)?

((Mod here: It’s no problem! People in the queer community use the term ‘gay’ rather loosely. A few decades ago, ‘gay’ was used in reference to people that were trans, as well. It just meant people outside the norm. Now it’s a pretty loose term that can be used for many different reasons. I know people who are bi who make constant comments/jokes about how gay they are, despite being bi, because it’s become somewhat equivalent to just meaning generally queer. Connor likes the label and will probably keep it, even when he figures out his gender identity. He’ll mean it loosely as “I’m only attracted to guys”, but it’s easier to say that he’s gay since there wouldn’t be a specific label for a genderqueer person exclusively attracted to men.

However, bringing that back to Evan, whenever he finds his identity, it will still be connected to the overall theme of masculinity. Thus he could still fall under Connor’s identity of only being attracted to guys. However, even if Evan identified more neutrally or with the feminine identity, Connor loves Evan for Evan, not because of his identity.))

I do wish there were more games in otome type with fully customisable or undefined MC but I'm not getting upset that I'm not getting it in games that are clearly targeted at another audience. In most otome MCs are not only the same brown haired skinny short eyeless type with overgrown fringe, but also complete doormats, often incompetent and passive, so SWD MCs that are generally quite badass and drive their stories, are really not the worst out there.

Seein them as characters is def. the way to go and that makes it hella more enjoyable, bc they are good characters and that’s the sorta thing you don’t wanna dismiss just bc you’re meant to be the one the game focuses on. I just think it’d be better if they advertised it like that, y’know? There’s plenty of games out there that work like that even in this genre, tellin a story with a named/defined MC without pretending that you’re meant to imprint on them. 

Bc the issue isn’t how their lives work, bc you can pretend like, well this’s how my life’d be if I lived in that world.
