Get Well Soon

John gasped as he awoke in his hospital bed.

Why am I here? He thought to himself.

He looked around his room, desperate for information. The window showed the top of a tree and the red tint of the sky. The space inside the room was empty, save for the get well soon card on the table to his left. The hospital was ominously quiet. The loudest sound was his own breath.

“Nurse!” John yelled. Nothing.

“Anyone! Please! I need help!”

His cries were futile. He glanced over at the card. He picked it up and studied the front. The cover was a cute dinosaur saying “I hope you feel better!” John opened the card.

John

I’m so sorry. The girls and I waited for you every night since you entered the coma. It’s been six months now. Today is my last day visiting. Ever since the date of impact was released, the hospital staff grew smaller and smaller, and it became too dangerous to go outside. Violence became the coping mechanism of most, and the death toll rose. We’ve been bunkered at Greg’s house. Don’t worry, he’s kept us safe with plenty of food and supplies.

I made this trip alone to see you one last time. I don’t know if you’ll ever wake up, but if you do, come to the bunker. The estimation is July 30th, so you have until then.

I love you with all of my heart.

John placed the card down. He didn’t have time to take in the message before a bright, shining light caught his attention from the window. He looked out to see a colossal, fiery-red meteor in the sky, getting bigger and bigger.
