It's a little bit late, but Happy Anniversary to Pokémon Colosseum! This took the best part of a month to complete (working on and off). Likes and reblogs heavily appreciated! Acrylic on canvas, 30 x 40

hey do you think in ancient productions of the ajax, teucer and ajax' masks were visually similar. i know the chorus leader announces teucer as he's about to appear but i love the idea of teucer finally hurrying onstage (after EVERYONE including ajax have been asking where he is all through the play) and the audience being struck by their similarity. augh their voices too. i love hurting myself imagining that "oh nooooooo that IS his brother" feeling

I was cleaning up some broken links on my old silly Pokemon fansite, the Neglected Pokemon Lovers Unite (NPLU), and I realized that it has now been open for 25 years. TWENTY. FIVE. YEARS. That is an ASTONISHING amount of time for a site to stay open! Even if the last substantial update was like back in 2009 lol. The world around it has changed so much, but I think it's still valuable as a time capsule of a certain time on the internet. I wrote up a new essay about it on the site and did some general clean-up here and there.

Anyway to that end, since so much of the fic and art there is so old, I decided to compare Radic's oldest form to his newest! Radic was always a human boy but I just couldn't draw humans at the time so I made him a furry lol. Eventually I figured it out.

I also thought it'd be a neat challenge to mimic my own style back when it was really wonky and bad. And it was! It was kind of fun actually. I don't have too many shots of Radic from back then (it was hard to get art on the internet in the late 90's-early 00's), but I do have a few - hugging Kitsune, two old kiribans if you want to compare. I had a lot more old shots of Parasects though to reference unsurprisingly, they were very triangular lol. I think I did a pretty good job of matching what my art used to look like. I had a clear see-through Gameboy back in the day if you can't tell what Radic is holding lol.

("Isn't Radic the faceless avatar of your gamer self as depicted in Handplates-" yes, but Pokemon!Radic is the only one that actually became his own character, all the rest are shells)

If you do go poking around the NPLU, please keep in mind that almost everything there is very old and most of the fic and art is pretty bad (and shockingly violent). Plz do not judge me! My younger self was a cringey weeb but she was trying very hard. :<

I'm having A Thought about cultural assumptions and how people often conflate their own cultural quirks and patterns as being either universal or Obviously Logical, based on seeing a post with someone's lock screen, because I have ADHD.

It was a simple example but a very neat one, and it's about how we write and speak about dates (as in the measure of time, not the fruit of the date palm or an intimate meeting). Americans write dates backwards, by the standards of nearly every culture (inc. other English speaking cultures). They write them MM/DD/YY instead of DD/MM/YY, this is known.

But the thing is, ok there is a good reason most people write the day then month but none the less, what a culture decides on is still just a little bit arbitrary, the point is it's a cultural agreement that This Is How It's Done. Earlier I saw a post with someone's lock screen, an American, and it displayed something like "Wednesday, December 12" and that caught my eye because mine obviously reads "Thursday, 9 March", because I come from the UK, where we use DD/MM.

And I was reminded of an American once telling me how MM/DD obviously makes more sense though, because you see, that's how you say dates in English! You would say "March ninth", so you write the month then the day! Except, well, that's not how we say dates here, we say "the ninth of March". But this guy had assumed that the standard phrasing in his culture was just how all English speakers would say it, therefore the date format they used was clearly the more natural and intuitive way, and of course you think in terms of the month something is happening and then when in the month it is!

To me, however, this feels like someone earnestly and confidently explaining that naturally you put your socks on over your shoes.

Obviously there's a bunch of examples of this kind of thing, and many with far greater importance, but it just seemed like a really very telling and concise example of how people will see features of their culture that result from specific quirks as universalities that make more sense than any other system.

just respect how people self-identify and resist the urge to assign bad faith assumptions onto why they identify the way they do. we as a community need to be kinder and more understanding with one another. we all have our reasons for the language we use for ourselves and our queerness, and more often than not, there isn’t some bad, harmful reasoning behind our labels.

and of course, some folks identify as both bi and pan. this post is just about how people just assume every bi and pan person who does not use both labels has made a choice between the two labels, or in other words, considered both labels and rejected one for the other. and this is simply not the case.

i can’t speak for anyone but myself, and personally i don’t like when my self-identification is painted in a negative light in comparison to another label; that my pansexuality is a rejection of bisexuality. it isn’t. i have nothing but love and respect for bisexuality, bisexual history, and bisexual people. i’m just simply not bisexual. it isn’t any deeper than that.

and if you’re wondering why it matters if people think this, it’s because language matters. queer people’s experiences with their identity and the language they use for it should be acknowledged and respected, rather than dismissed in favor of creating a uniform narrative, especially one that is negative, that we all neatly fit into.
