Drabble Challenge Day 2: Faceless

“The man’s a ghost.” Director Brassel scowls at the dossier in disgust. It contains a string of aliases and a conspicuous lack of personal details. Name, age, origin – all blank. “Well, Hunt? You’re the expert on this faceless thief.”

“Not faceless, sir,” Ethan disagrees. Bruno Hartenfaust. Lou Vannes. Honoré Amiens. A new identity every time they met. Ethan’s known undercover operatives less paranoid. “A many-faced saint, if anything.”

“How poetic,” Brassel grumbles.

Ethan hides a grin. He’ll have to pass that onto the Saint when he next sees him. He’ll be delighted at causing the IMF no end of headaches.

Actually, in reference to my last post, is it controversial to call Jorge Luis Borges a magical realist? Or in some sense the Ur-magical realist?

I feel like the genre name is so closely associated with the particular style of some authors like Gabriel García Marquez who wrote more openly about dictatorship and oppression, more surrealistically and not always as metatextually as Borges.

But at the same time I feel like Borges wrote some of the prototypes for the entire genre, like “The Zahir,” “Funes the Memorious,” and “The Miracle."
