Hold Every Memory musings (and... kind of an announcement?):

Back in January, I wrote an incomplete scene from the SAINW side of things as I was puzzling over how I wanted to handle it and also working out their characterizations a little. They're ten years older, ten years stressed, ten years of hurt between them.

I decided not to finish that or write anything from the SAINW side, and stick solely with Don's point of view, for a reason -

The readers get to know as much as Don knows, and his brothers are not telling him the gory details. They're trying to protect him - what can he do, stuck on the other side? How much to tell him, how much would he stress out over events he can't possibly affect? Being in the astral plane is an escape for them, as well. Their reasons are many and complicated.

The audience gets to experience the same lack of information that Don does. They get to stew in that same uncertainty. Many readers know how bad it gets, but we're only a third of the way into that timeline, so how bad is it actually, right now? It's been fun reading comments where people's imaginations seem to be filling in the blanks. I love it a lot.

...but I know, I've been thinking about it pretty hard, actually. I have a rough timeline for all of it. And I had some inspiration while talking to @cadoodledoodleydoo the other night, and I think I know the sort of story I want to tell, now, if I were to really dig into what the SAINW crew has been up to.

I'm getting closer to being done with the Lou Jitsu oneshot. I'm thinking if I can piece together the Leo oneshot, that would be where Don really gets the inside scoop. And once those doors are opened, and Don and the readers know where things stand?

I might end up telling that story. A little detour from Don's head. Maybe.

As with all HEM fics, if I end up doing this I'm going to be yoinking a song lyric for the title, and I'm thinking this one will be from Pompeii by Bastille.

and, due to i guess what i'd call experiential clipping, i had no idea what they were talking about. all colds sucked about the same.

now i understand; some colds suck more than others.

usually, when i'm sick, i make it everyone's problem, but this time ... whatever. i mean i am making it everyone's problem (all the windows are open for fresh air even though that means it's cold inside), and in a fruitful? futile? effort to not give it to partner, i'm making them do all the cooking --

hot off the triumph of my ng+ run of dark souls 1, i decided to finally go back to try and beat ringed city which i rage quit 2 years ago (read more because i rambled a bit) (obligatory note that this is all just my opinion, other people get different things out of the game and that's fine, etc)

i didn't quit over a boss fight, but over that stretch between the inner wall bonfire and the swamp where the devs were like okay turtle clerics, ringed knights, SIX harald knights on the stairs backed up by ranged, and then a goddamn swamp in a level that should have been a cool ruined city. and all of the hard damage sponge enemies respawn. so if you die you have to go through a ton of very slow hard fights again and it's tedious

this time i looked up where the bonfire was and just made a run for it. and then after trying the next part did the same thing again. it is just frustrating. i can't play for more than twenty minutes at a time without having to turn it off and find something actually fun to do

the whole time I've been thinking about what makes a soulsborne level actually good. i've never thought it was difficulty (and would argue that being known as "so so hard" becoming the core aspect of soulsborne has been the worst thing to happen to the series)

for me, the best levels depend on patience and observation, not extremely hard enemies spawning out of nowhere. the sign of a good level is that when you finish it, when you're out of the thick of it, you think "hey that was cool and i wouldn't mind doing it again someday". and you think that regardless of any annoyance or difficulty you had along the way

when you finish an area and just think "i never want to go through that again" then something went wrong

i think about tower of latria, anor londo, darkroot garden, tomb of giants, central yarhnam, and even the valley of defilement and yeah some of those were grueling but god were they cool and i will go back to them someday. ringed city makes me think i'd rather go mop my kitchen (which i did so i guess something good came of it)

similar feeling about boss fights. artorias and manus were challenging but i ended both fights being like fuck yeah i did it! and the fights looked and felt really cool. i felt like i was fighting a duel rather than waiting for the boss to stop ping-ponging off the walls shitting status effects so i could get in one hit

the first boss fight in ringed city (I'm up to the second one now but haven't done it yet) i was like oh good now i never have to do that again (i don't even remember it very well, just that i didn't enjoy it). i actually prefer easy fights that have neat atmosphere (moonlight butterfly) to harder ones that leave me frustrated and think the best ones combine elements of challenge and atmosphere

(artorias' primal screams still get me every time, the deceptive speed he can move with despite lurching around, his dead arm dangling, the trail of abyss corruption, the way i remembered all his attacks years later...god that fight was good)

anyway i love the series a ton and I'll just end with the fact i have beaten demon's souls about 5 times (3 ng+ iterations included), and dark souls 1 about the same number of times. i've been through bloodborne twice and am almost through a third time. elden ring i beat twice and it's kind of a mixed bag. and then there's ds3 which i beat once and have 5 new characters i never got far on (i did like it but felt no desire to replay). i don't think i ever touched ds2 again after beating it. to me that says a lot

Malzubed The Fire Dragon who doesn't like the heat and enjoys chilling in his forest. Which IS actually a forest you can visit in Arvale Short Tales!! Unfortunately only playable on pocket PC...

Dragons, particularly fire dragons, are not the type of creature one would associate with prosperity and green nature, but here we have one who has an entire forest named after him.

In the good ending you actually see him in (presumably) his forest when Duncan gives him a visit =] Which I find so neat...

oh by the corpses I just seen someone on twitter point to when they added first added hats as when tf2s artstyle died. Calling tf2s artstyle beforehand "restrained 50s cold war art direction" as if it wasn't silly day one. "people rightfully shit on cod for breaking its art style but tf2 has been a mess for longer that nobody questions it" as if the game didn't have cartoony gore effects, funny voice lines and general golden comic era stupidity from as soon as it released. Im sorry but that idea of tf2 died 2 years in, even sooner if you actually look at any of the meet the team videos. and at the end of their little "thing was actually much better back in the day" speal they had the gall to go tell people to play tf2 classic. I'm sorry to people who play "classic" versions of games but why is it that whenever a bad take with someone saying that "oh the tone has been RUINED from its original light" or whatever, it's always a git who hasn't played the main game in over 10 years and stopped 2 years in. Like mate, you barely played the game! This period of time you talk about is less than a third of the games lifespan, less than even "the golden years" that the game was like in its prime. Why is the complaint with the yeti taunt glitch that a yeti is in the game as a taunt and not that the glitch exists? ugh, i need a drink. sorry for bringing twitter discourse filth here, just needed to quickly vent a little steam out me.

made plans yest to take to boss today abt the project she wants me to do. but i miscalculated my time cause shenanigans and instead of talking to her 1-2hrs into the day i didnt get around to it till 11. but she wASNT THERE AGAIN. so i left her a note. it is now 12:30 and i went on lunch and i KNOW shes been in her office but she hasnt come to see me. and now i also need to harrass her abt signing a paper for me so i can go to registry right after work

John Price staring at your cat, it’s rare that he comes out when he visits. He normally sees the end of a tail as the cat rushes back to its safe space in the airing cupboard.

“Gotta call him General Tibs not just Tibs, John,” you tell him or he’ll never come out of his safe space. John huffing about how the cat’s a higher rank than him and still can’t take orders.

All of your previous cats were named Tibs, but they upped a rank each time. Sergeant Tibs, Captain Tibs and now General Tibs.

A tabby, lazy in his old age. Starts to creep closer when John’s watching tv late at night and thinks he can’t be seen in the shadows. Each night getting just that little bit closer. John doesn’t acknowledge General Tibs, knowing he’ll flee if he turns his head in the cat’s direction.

And when General Tibs does become comfortable around John, he scratches the cat’s head, “still up, old timer?” A purr of approval and then he’s gone again.

It’s not till he moves in, a house you’ve bought together that they bond more. No airing cupboard, so General Tibs has been roaming around the new home in search for a safe space.

John building General Tibs a cupboard in the alcove next to the fire, the cat will be able to feel the warmth through the wall.

He lets General Tibs discover the new spot, the same blankets and towels in there from his old safe space. Every now and then John opens the cupboard door, checking on him. A scratch to the head and closing the door again.

There’s not much General Tibs does, he’s content with laying around the house all day, sitting on your lap as you read or in John’s lap as he does the weekly crossword in the newspaper.

He does however like sitting in the back seat of John’s truck watching the world blur by. It happened by accident the first time, Tibs sneaking out and jumping in back, but John didn’t make a big deal out of it. So now he goes for Sunday morning drives with the tabby, all so he can keep the old car going that’s he’s been working on.

General Tibs prefers John’s office, the sun shines on the wood flooring and he likes to lay in the warmth. You send John pictures of the cat when he’s working away from home, Tibs stretched asleep.

The guys at work look over his shoulder at the picture and say that John and the cat are both old gits. Which makes John trim his scruffy beard, a little tidy up. Scolds them for shortening his name, “that’s General Tibs, to you.”
