Abortion is the major issue in Virginia's state legislative elections on Tuesday.
Republicans control the governor's office and the House of Delegates – the lower chamber of the Virginia legislature. Democrats hold a narrow majority in the Senate – the upper chamber.
Virginia is the only state in the South which observes full reproductive freedom. GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin (AKA: Glenn Trumpkin) is pushing a measure to restrict abortion. Trumpkin has national ambitions and wants to re-enforce his hardline credentials by pandering to the MAGA crowd.
If Democrats do not end up with control of at least one chamber of the legislature after Tuesday's election then Virginia will join the rest of the South as a place where Republican officials have a virtual regulator in every OBGYN office in the state.
Legislative elections can be decided by very narrow margins. And the tightest race for the Virginia Senate seems to be the 24th Senate District where incumbent Democrat Monty Mason is fighting a challenge by Republican J.D. Diggs. In a Washington Post article about the race in the 24th district, Karen Tumulty reports...
Across Virginia, abortion has become the overriding issue on the airwaves for the Democrats, highlighted in more than 40 percent of their ads. Republicans are talking about it in only 3 percent of theirs, according to the tracking firm AdImpact. But Mason noted: “People bring it up to me. I don’t have to lead with it in a lot of places.” That is because Virginia is the last Southern state where the procedure has remained widely available after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Abortion in Virginia is legal up to 26 weeks of gestation.
A vote in the Virginia legislative election is important anywhere in the state. But it's even more important in these swing districts.

^^^ those charts come from this excellent article at the UVA Center for Politics.
The Race for Virginia’s Legislature, Part Two
If you'd like to know which legislative districts you're in, in Virginia or ANY state, find out here.
Find Your Legislators Look your legislators up by address or use your current location.
There's statistical evidence that Virginia voters in the 18 to 29 group can swing an election.
In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden easily carried Virginia in the presidential election; voters 18 to 29 overall made up 14.6% of the Virginians who took part in that election. In 2021, Republican Glenn Youngkin/Trumpkin won the race for Virginia governor; 18 to 29 voters were just 9.1% of the Virginia voters in that election. (source)

VOTE! If you live outside Virginia but know people there, send them a quick message to remind them to vote.

So enough time has passed since these events that I think I can post this without ruffling any feathers (plus I just rediscovered the image in my photo roll):
During the 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election where Glenn Youngkin ended up getting elected, some of his opponents put up signs with a portmanteau of Youngkin and Trump, attempting to link the two together and hurt Youngkin's chances. What was that portmanteau, you ask?

Oh my goodness.
Regardless of what you think about politics, Trumpkin would be excellent for Virginia. He's a noble, loyal, yet practical dwarf with all the necessary credentials. He's served as Caspian's trusted regent on numerous occasions. He's got a history of military service--a war hero even! No scandals, very honest. Able to work with a variety of different types of creatures. Strong willed, yet willing to compromise. He's both helped organize a grassroots uprising against an oppressive occupation and served in the King's administration. An experienced politician, yet a dwarf of the people!

This Trumpkin would have been the best possible governor of Virginia. In fact, he's my presidential pick for 2024:

#no partisan politics on this blog please#i just think that we can all unify behind Trumpkin the Dwarf#he can heal the nation#aslan you're bigger#narnia#pontifications and creations#i saved the campaign image at the time and thought about making a post like this last November but it seemed like a bad idea then#too hot of an issue irl to risk joking about it on the internet#hopefully now it's acceptable and funny

Trump's hold on GOP remains as he teases Texas AG endorsement In a new statement to CNN on Tuesday, Trump said he will soon be endorsing for Texas attorney general ahead of next year’s GOP primary. The race will likely be between the incumbent, Ken Paxton, and current state land commissioner George P. Bush, who is expected to announce his challenge to Paxton as early as next week. “I like them both very much. I’ll be making my endorsement and recommendation to the great people of Texas in the not-so-distant future. I told Texas that Sleepy Joe would be against guns, oil, and God, and I was right!” Trump said Tuesday. The jockeying for Trump’s support is becoming standard practice in competitive Republican races. In the crowded field for the GOP nomination in this year’s governor’s race in Virginia, for instance, multiple candidates positioned themselves as pro-Trump, including the eventual winner of the nomination, Glenn Youngkin. Virginia Democrats have since seized on the association, blasting the Republican nominee as “Glenn Trumpkin.” As Texas’ attorney general, Paxton has been an ally of Trump’s, including in the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Last December, Paxton launched an ill-fated lawsuit against several other states that voted for Democrat Joe Biden, seeking to invalidate more than 17 million ballots. The Supreme Court dismissed the suit later that month. One person involved with Texas Republican politics told CNN that Trump was frustrated and disappointed with Paxton’s failed lawsuit. Bush, meanwhile, appears to be seeking the Trump endorsement ahead of his expected entry into the attorney general race. On Monday, Bush tweeted a photo of himself talking on the phone. “Great to speak with President Trump to discuss the future of Texas and how we are keeping up the fight to put America first. I appreciate the words of encouragement and support. Big things coming soon!” he wrote on Twitter. The 45-year-old Bush has not yet announced his candidacy, though he has said he is considering it and may enter the race at a planned campaign rally next week. A spokesperson for Bush did not return a request for comment. Despite Bush’s devotion to Trump, other members of his famous political family long have denounced the former President. Bush’s uncle and grandfather, former GOP Presidents George W. Bush and the late George H.W. Bush, distanced themselves from Trump. And after January 6, George W. Bush criticized the state of the Republican Party under Trump’s leadership as “isolationist, protectionist and, to a certain extent, nativist.” But his nephew has taken a different tack as he seeks higher office as a Republican in Texas. George P. Bush has been the Texas land commissioner since 2015 and was reelected in 2018. His father is former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who was among the candidates Trump defeated in the 2016 Republican presidential primary. During the primaries, Jeb Bush called Trump a “chaos candidate” and continued to criticize him throughout his presidency. After his father left the 2016 race, though, the younger Bush campaigned on behalf of Trump and has embraced him ever since. When he endorsed Trump for reelection in 2020, the younger Bush said the then-President was “the only thing standing between America and socialism” — an endorsement that earned Trump’s praise on Twitter at the time. Paxton has also been a steadfast supporter of Trump, during and even after his presidency. In February, he tweeted a photo of himself and Trump on a golf course, calling him “my favorite president.” Source link Orbem News #Endorsement #GOP #Hold #Politics #Remains #Teases #Texas #Trump'sholdonGOPremainsasheteasesTexasAGendorsement-CNNPolitics #Trumps

To start, I will say right off the bat that I am by no means a Trump supporter. I really didn’t prefer either candidate in the election, and by most people’s standards, I probably threw my vote in the garbage.
With that being said, I really do have some concerns with the current issue of Intelligence Agencies and Russian involvement in the election.
This, to me, seems like a very polar issues. I go on facebook and see Trump supporters shooting down this claim, or at least turning it around in some way so that it reflects poorly on the democrats. Likewise, I go to Twitter and see people treating the hacks, as well as “GoldenGate,” or whatever name this raunchy story has been given, as absolute fact, and all those questioning it as Trumpkins and the like.
I’m disturbed at how little room for honest skepticism there seems to be today in political discourse.
Would I be surprised if Russia had involvement in the election? Absolutely not. These newest Trump reports? A little more so, but still not out of the realm of possibility. But why are we treating these with absolute certainty? When did we, as Americans, stop questioning the word of our intelligence agencies? There are few people that are even publically criticising our trust in these agencies, aside from a few well known journalists such as Glenn Greenwald.
That name alone should remind anyone of why we shouldn’t have absolute faith in our intelligence agencies. In 2013, Jim Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, lied to Congress when he said that the NSA did not “wittingly” collect information on millions of Americans. That lie is what lead Edward Snowden to abandon his comfortable life, and all that he held closest to him, to tell every American that the NSA was doing just the opposite, and that their programs infringed upon every single American’s basic right to privacy as protected by the fourth amendment.
Intelligence agencies were also confident enough in the assessment of WMDs in Iraq to send us to war. Just in case you forgot, there weren’t any. We can also look back to Vietnam, where those same agencies mislead our country in a similar circumstance. The FBI, specifically, doesn’t have the greatest track record either. As we remember Martin Luther King Jr and his immense contributions to American society, we should also remember the time the FBI tried to blackmail him into suicide by threatening to expose his sexual life to the public.
These examples, to me, are enough to make any American at least question the legitimacy of whatever these agencies say. Every report made public about Russian interference has been vague, and lacked definite evidence. As lacking as those reports have been, the one on Trump that was released by Buzzfeed was even more lacking.
These claims are intense, and could lead to impeachment with Trump, and could be seen as an act of war by Russia. Do we, as Americans, want to run into situations like this head first without knowing their absolute legitimacy? Must we label people who question these reports in such a way that devalues their opinion? In this volatile time in our country, it shouldn’t have to be said that we need to use our heads, not our hearts to find out what is true, less we lead our country into more unnecessary trouble.

In last year's off-off year election, Democrats flipped the House of Delegates – the lower chamber of the Virginia legislature and held on to the Virginia Senate. This was contrary to the predictions of various pundits. ProTip: When you vote, you win.
One result of the Democratic takeover of the House of Delegates was the election of Virginia's first ever African American speaker of that chamber.
The Virginia General Assembly unanimously elected Democrat Don Scott as house speaker on Wednesday, making him the first Black speaker in the Virginia House of Delegates' history. Del. Scott approached the podium to cheers and a standing ovation as he took the oath of office and began his term as the leader of the House. "My first immediate emotion is just gratitude. I'm very grateful," said Scott, tearing up as he thanked his 88 year old mother and his wife, watching from the gallery. "The historic nature of this moment is not lost on me," he told the House. "I pray that it is a proud moment for all of us, as we nominate Delegate Don Scott as our next speaker of the house," said Del. Luke E. Torian in his nomination speech. "Over 400 years ago, people who looked like Delegate Scott gave their sweat blood and tears to build this Capitol," Del. Torian elaborated. "And I would say that is probably only right and fitting and appropriate that 400 years later, a person of color, an African American, whose ancestors helped to build this capital now stands to help lead this House of Delegates."
2023 was supposed to be a good year for Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin (AKA: Trumpkin) but the voters decided otherwise.
Early in 2022, Scott took on Gov. Glenn Youngkin after the Republican set up a "tipline" for Virginians to anonymously report educators for teaching so-called "divisive concepts" like Critical Race Theory. "What I've seen from his day one activities is not someone who is a man of faith, not a Christian, but someone who wants to divide the Commonwealth," Scott proclaimed to the Virginia House of Delegates, amid boos and jeers from the Republican side of the aisle. Scott took it in stride. "I know the truth hurts. I don't want to make you cry, like saying 'critical race theory,' because I know it hurts your feelings."
Youngkin is term limited and can't run in 2025. Hopefully there will soon be a Democratic trifecta in the Old Dominion state.
For now: Congratulations to Speaker Scott! 🎊

It has been a bad week for Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia. Youngkin (AKA: Glenn Trumpkin) has been trying to position himself as the savior of the Republican Party in order to gain national political traction.
Trumpkin's centerpiece of Republican salvation has been what I call Faux Roe. It's his proposal to restrict abortion to the first 15 weeks and offer almost no exceptions thereafter. His plan was to flip the Virginia Senate and enact Faux Roe into law. He had tried to portray the real Roe v. Wade and Democratic support for it as "extremist".
Not only did Trumpkin fail to flip the state Senate, but Republicans also lost control of the Virginia House of Delegates. Trumpkin will now have to face a legislature with BOTH chambers under Democratic control for the last two years of his term.
Democrats have secured full control of the Virginia state legislature, winning a majority in the house of delegates and depriving the Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin, of the opportunity to enact a 15-week abortion ban. Democrats maintained their majority in the state senate and flipped control of the house of delegates, where Republicans previously held a narrow advantage. Democrats’ victories quashed Youngkin’s hopes of securing a Republican-controlled legislature that would be able to advance his policy agenda, casting doubt upon his prospects as a potential presidential candidate. “Governor Youngkin and Virginia Republicans did everything they could to take total control of state government, but the people of the Commonwealth rejected them,” Susan Swecker, chair of the Democratic party of Virginia, said in a statement. “Virginians won’t go backwards. Instead of extremism and culture wars, people voted for commonsense leadership and problem solvers.”
Virginia's off-off year elections take place in odd years prior to Congressional and presidential elections. They provide some insight as to the direction of the prevailing political winds.
As one of the only states holding off-year elections, the Virginia results could serve as a bellwether for the presidential race next year.
Things haven't been going well for radical anti-abortion, anti-democracy Republicans in general.
The Democratic victory in Virginia was good news for President Biden.
Why Democrats’ big Virginia win is also a victory for Biden
Joe Biden wasn’t on the ballot on Tuesday in Virginia. But Democrats’ big win will bring welcome news on the other side of the Potomac. Virginia’s off-year elections have long been seen as a bellwether of the broader political environment — and a partial referendum on the incumbent president. So Democrats sweeping control of the state legislature — which both parties believed was in play — will serve as a boost to Biden’s reelection campaign next year. [ ... ] Tuesday’s wins will likely validate Democrats’ plans to continue to run on abortion next year, a strategy that has given them a series of almost uninterrupted wins since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer. “In hundreds of races since Donald Trump’s conservative Supreme Court appointments overturned Roe v. Wade, we’ve seen Americans overwhelmingly side with President Biden and Democrats’ vision for this country,” Biden’s campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez said in a statement Tuesday night. “That same choice will be before voters again next November, and we are confident the American people will send President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House to keep working for them.” They also show that Youngkin doesn’t have the silver bullet for solving the GOP’s electoral problems with abortion, as his operation had hoped.
Republicans had been trying for 49 years to get Roe v. Wade overturned. When the GOP Supreme Court finally did the deed last year, it turned out to be a poison pill for Republicans running for office.
In Virginia, Democrats won 21 of 40 seats in the Senate and 51 of 100 seats in the House of Delegates.

When the official counting of late absentee ballots and provisional ballots is completed next week, Dems could end up gaining one additional seat in each chamber. 🎉

There was a special election in a swingy Virginia State Senate district on Tuesday. It did not go well for the GOP.
Republicans just lost another competitive race — thanks, in part, to the issue of abortion.
“Republicans in Richmond are trying to pass a new ban on abortion in Virginia. And Kevin Adams, he wants to join them to take away women’s freedom to make our own personal medical decisions,” went one TV ad from Democrat Aaron Rouse, who flipped a GOP-held state Senate seat in Virginia from red to blue.
At issue is a push by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin and GOP legislators to ban abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Virginia has a GOP governor, Glenn Youngkin Trumpkin, who has national ambitions. The GOP holds a small majority in the lower house of the Virginia legislature (the House of Delegates) while Dems narrowly control the upper house. Youngkin Trumpkin had been wanting to enact major restrictions on abortion like ones which exist in trifecta red states. Tuesday’s special election where Democrat Aaron Rouse flipped a Republican seat has for now thwarted Youngkin Trumpkin‘s extremist anti-abortion agenda in the state.
Axios has this analysis...
Why it matters: Youngkin's efforts to build a robust governing record ahead of a possible 2024 presidential campaign — including closely watched plans for a stricter abortion ban — are at risk.
Driving the news: Democrat Aaron Rouse declared victory over Republican Kevin Adams in the Virginia Beach-based seat vacated by former GOP state State Sen Kiggans, who was elected to Congress in November.
• The contest was held in a textbook swing district: It backed Kiggans in 2019, President Biden in 2020 and Youngkin in 2021.
• Rouse focused his campaign message on protecting abortion rights, campaigning against Youngkin's proposal for a 15-week ban that was formally introduced in the Virginia legislature on Wednesday.
This is yet another example of why people need to pay more attention to the legislature in their respective states.
Voters in Virginia Senate District 07 helped save abortion rights in the Old Dominion state. And VA-SD07 had not been perceived a slam dunk for Dems. When you vote, you win.

All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates and all 40 seats in the Virginia Senate are up for election in November of 2023. Yep, VA is one of those off-year states. If turnout and interest statewide are similar to that this month in SD07, Democrats should retain control of the Senate and have an excellent chance of re-taking the House of Delegates. Getting involved in state government races is the best way at the moment to protect reproductive rights.

Virginians will get a second chance in a year to vote against Donald Trump.
The state is holding an off-off-year election for governor and Republicans have nominated a Trump clone for the office.
His name is Glenn Youngkin (AKA: Trumpkin). He’s like a Donald Trump who has graduated from charm school. He holds the same anti-democratic and reactionary views as Trump but voices them in a more highfalutin way.

Trumpkin is running against former Gov. Terry McAuliffe. McAuliffe restored voting rights to 173,611 ex-felons when he was previously governor. Under Virginia law, he had to do so by signing 173,611 individual documents by hand. Terry is the direct opposite of voter-suppressing Republicans who would restrict voting to white Fox News viewers if they could.
We know how important state government can be. Gov. Greg Abbott is desperately trying to force misogynistic restrictions on abortions in Texas. Gov. Ron DeSantis wants everybody in Florida to get COVID-19 to please a campaign contributor who has a stake in a pharmaceutical company which claims to have a treatment for the virus.
So if you’re in Virginia, vote for Terry McAuliffe on November 2nd. If you know anybody in Virginia, remind them to vote. We can no longer take democracy for granted; the states as a whole are as important as the federal government.

The California recall results have been certified.
The election on the question of recalling Gov. Gavin Newsom took place on September 14th. Counties had until last week to complete their count. In short, the election result was a miserable failure for Republicans.

The percentage of Californians voting against the recall of Gov. Newsom is identical to the percentage of votes he received when he ran for governor in 2018.
Final California recall count shows Newsom with tally identical to 2018
Not only did Republicans fail to remove the Democratic governor of America’s largest state, but they energized his re-election efforts 14 months ahead of the 2022 midterms.
The polls for the recall showed a close race, but in the end the Republicans were eating Newsom’s dust.
It’s now your turn, Virginia. On November 2nd your votes are needed to prevent the election of radical right-winger Glenn Youngkin (AKA: Glenn Trumpkin). Trumpkin is rabidly anti-abortion and is chummy with homophobes.
Only by electing Democrat Terry McAuliffe will you keep Virginia out of the claws of Donald Trump and the MAGA crowd.
President Obama is one of many prominent Democrats to campaign for Terry McAuliffe.

The Trump Republican governor of Virginia apparently wants to know your menstrual history.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin (AKA: Trumpkin) has derailed a bill preventing Virginia police from seeking the menstrual histories of women in the state. This has everything to do with the extremist GOP position on abortion.
The Republican governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, appears to have thwarted an attempt to stop law enforcement obtaining menstrual histories of women in the state.
A bill passed in the Democratic-led state senate, and supported by half the chamber’s Republicans, would have banned search warrants for menstrual data stored in tracking apps on mobile phones or other electronic devices.
Advocates feared private health information could be used in prosecutions for abortion law violations, after a US supreme court ruling last summer overturned federal protections for the procedure.
But Youngkin, who has pushed for a 15-week abortion ban to mirror similar measures in several Republican-controlled states, essentially killed the bill through a procedural move in a subcommittee of the Republican-controlled House.
Citing unspecified future threats to the ability of law enforcement to investigate crime, Maggie Cleary, Youngkin’s deputy secretary of public safety, told the courts of justice subcommittee it was not the legislature’s responsibility to restrict the scope of search warrants.
Republican womb radicals are still calling the shots on reproduction in the party.
“While the administration understands the importance of individuals’ privacy … this bill would be the very first of its kind that I’m aware of, in Virginia or anywhere, that would set a limit on what search warrants can do,” she said, according to the Washington Post.
“Currently any health information or any app information is available via search warrant. And we believe that should continue to be the case.”
The panel voted on party line to table the bill, meaning it is unlikely to resurface during the current legislative session.
Youngkin/Trumpkin has been mentioned as a possible 2024 GOP presidential candidate. He can’t afford to offend the hardline fundamentalist Christians who make up a considerable percentage of the extremist GOP base.
The GOP complains that vaccine mandates go against people’s free-dumb. Somehow they see no contradiction in demanding menstrual histories – provided they can find an overzealous fundamentalist cop willing to brandish a warrant.
The only way to permanently protect reproductive rights in the United States is to vote Democratic in every election and never to miss an election — for any level of government.

Turnout is the only factor that really matters in elections. ☒
You doubt this?
Take a look at two recent elections in Virginia a year apart.
In the 2020 presidential election Joe Biden carried Virginia by 10.11%. In the 2021 gubernatorial election, Trump Republican Glenn Youngkin won by 1.94%.
While all age groups voted in lower numbers in 2021, people under 40 voted in substantially lower numbers and the number of those in the 18-29 group fell off a cliff.
In November of 2020, the two under 40 cohorts made up a healthy 29.83% of the Virginia vote. 12 months later, that percentage plummeted to 22.01%. In the same period, the three oldest cohorts saw their combined percentage leap from 54.35% to 62.41%. As a result, Virginia now has a governor in the form of Glenn Youngkin (AKA: “Trumpkin”) who repealed state protections for trans students, tried to recriminalize weed, and is opposed to increasing the minimum wage in the state.
Voting is the way you exercise power in a democracy. If you don’t vote, you are relinquishing power to those who do vote.
