adventures in serbia: cityscapes and monuments (+ a fortress) edition
#personal#only took one photo of golubac fortress bc it was so fucking hot that day; compounded by my body's battle with a 24 hour stomach bug#heatwave hasn't died down quite just yet but now that i've recovered at least i'm better able to tolerate it#all i could think of as i approached the kosmaj monument were 1: 'i feel like i've stumbled upon some prothean architecture'#and 2: 'man it'd look so ominously cool on a foggy autumn/winter day'#if we had more time to spare i would've loved to go on a road trip around the former yugoslavia just to see all the incredible ww2 monument#serbia

Upstream of the Iron Gates
This afternoon we went to Lepenski Vir, an ancient archeological site.
The actual site was on the bank of the Danube, but the construction of the Iron Gates dam flooded the site. So they did archaeological explorations in the area to be flooded. They originally thought that there was only a neolithic site that had been mostly washed away be the river. But one person tried at a much lower level and discovered a village from 6,000 BC. That was interesting in itself, but they discovered that this was a very different village, especially for that time.
Directly across the Danube from the site is a large outcropping that dominates the are.

This rock also has a high iron content. So it is famous for attracting lightning strikes.
In this village, all the houses have a unique truncated triangle floor plan. The base of this triangle always faces the river and the formation on the opposite bank.

Studies showed that the people in this village were fishers and were much taller than normal for the time, as well as seeming to live to an older age. It seems to me that the fish diet probably provided a higher protein diet than many others.
Since the site was going to be flooded by the new lake, they moved the elements of the site up the hill and built a building over it.
The layers indicated that the people lived in this village with a consistent culture for 3,000 years.
The other unique part of this village is the sculptures they made.

One question is why the faces have such a frown. The theory is that it is a fish mouth, not a frown.
So an interesting and unique site. Of course, we can only speculate as to the culture, but one theory is that the shape of the houses relates to the mountain across the river, which they saw as sacred. It's as good as idea any.
In the evening we stopped at Golubac to look at the fortress that guarded to Iron Gates. The fortress presents a dramatic image, especially at night. We moored a short distance from the fortress, an easy walk after dinner.
We could climb several of the towers, but Cathie and I skipped that. We'd seen enough old castles that we figured the interiors of the towers was not going to be interesting enough to warrant the climb.

FFIV week 2024 Day 3 - Innocence Lost
Did you know that there are two sides to the tale of the Golubac fly? One says that the flies were born from the corpse of a demon, out of its wrath. Another that they are the tears of the dragon's cub falling on its corpse.
