Here I show the place during autumn, a scenario we weren't able to show yet. It's an interesting time of year to cover, not only because of the novel colors in the flora but also the behaviors that many ungulates show.

With over 600 species of plants and animals it is one of the richest deposits we covered so far, unfortunately it's not as accessible and/or well documented as other formations, making the research a constant back in fourth, even during the stream we had extensive discussions on the taxonomy and validity of some of these animals. As you can see in this size chart by JW the size distribution of the fauna can be quite something, with rhinos and gomphothers being roughly cow sized, with a chalicother towering over them.

I love Gomphotherium. It has a funny name that is fun to say and also has four tusks interlocking. Sweet. It’s probably paraphyletic so enjoy it while you can.

Also Burian made it fuzzy which is adorable.

A fossilized tooth of a Gomphotherium angustidens from Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This Miocene aged proboscidean had two pairs of straight tusks and teeth with bumpy cusps similar to those of mastodon. Translating to "welded beast", Gomphotherium was a basal elephant-like animal or gomphothere that lived across many continents in Europe, North America, and Asia.

This Fossil Friday, meet Gomphotherium productum, or the “club beast.” This early relative of elephants lived in what is now Texas about 10 million years ago. Like others in this tall, short-necked group of mammals, it probably used its tusks to scoop up food. Over time, most members of the elephant family became larger, and the number and shape of their tusks varied. Gomphotherium had interlocking upper and lower tusks, but many later elephants had only upper ones.
