someone said they might be trying to establish a basis to claim that Spock and Chapel were actually in a secret relationship all throughout TOS and that’s actually the most monumentally terrible idea i’ve ever heard
i hate you (whoever you are) for bringing that up in my tags and i also hate myself for never considering that possibility and now i can’t stop thinking about how terrible of an idea that would be if that’s where they’re actually planning on going with this
(even though i don’t think it would actually make any sense for that to be what they’re going for since they would still, presumably, have to break up for long enough for Christine to get engaged to Roger Korby but hey SNW has never let canon get in the way of their bad ideas before)
#star trek#star trek tos#tos#star trek snw#snw#that’s even worse than when i saw someone suggesting that it would be ‘on again off again’ throughout tos#and then he’s gonna go back to her after the movies#yeah or maybe she has her own life#maybe she isn’t still obsessed with him what 30-40 years later#like why does anyone think that seems like a fun and romantic idea#why would that possibly be the storyline you want to happen#even if i shipped them that would just seem sad to me#that they don’t mention her or talk about her hardly at all but he’s gonna go back to her?#seems like bullshit to me#like they really think mr vulcan propriety was cheating on his fiancée all throughout tos

Make art!!!!!!!!! Make all the art you can while you can!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖
You have done something to my brain. I don't go here. I've never seen the show, but I am suddenly very interested in these old men and the cunty dorito that apparently haunts one of them? It's making me want to write my own fic, but I don't know why. I don't know why I'm into this entire thing as a concept. The Mystery Shack sounds like the coolest thing ever. I'm full of so many ideas...
How did I get here?
hell yeah this is so gd funny
well welcome this blog is 100% representative of what happens in the show . bill cipher is definitely a persistent character that isn't there for like 5 episodes total .

Here's my piece for the @mcspirkevents Big Bang! I was paired with the excellent @twinkboimler and their fic Jim Kirk's Guide to Delivering the Goods, which you can find here (E, AOS McSpirk, 60k)
Summer just started, and Jim is bored out of his mind. The courses he needs to take aren’t being offered until the second half of the summer, so he has an entire month to bother his roommate Bones. At Bones’ suggestion to get a job, Jim fixes up a motorbike and starts making deliveries to people in town, including a cute Vulcan professor named Spock. But when Jim is beaten up while making a delivery, it’s Spock who delivers Jim back to the apartment he shares with Bones. After the meet-cute from hell, Spock and Bones start dating… and so do Jim and Spock. With neither roommate aware they’re both dating the same man, there’s only so long that things can go well for them before the other shoe finally drops.
Also as part of my Big Bang offerings, I made a fic playlist (below) — partly a love letter to McSpirk, partly a love letter to myself and Fletcher's overlapping music taste.
Thank you again to Fletcher @twinkboimler for working on this project with me, it's been an absolute joy!

spones where they served on the same ship for like two weeks years ago (mccoy's hitching a ride to his new posting, but the ship's cmo was sick/injured, and mccoy rolls up his sleeves and pitches in).
which is why he's the one that beams down when the landing crew needs immediate medical attention, and a second doctor is now injured planetside (this ship's medical crew are really going through it this week), and it's also how he ends up tossed unceremoniously in a prison cell with the deeply aggravating vulcan science officer that's been riding his ass all week.
a deeply aggravating vulcan science officer that appears to have been.....dosed.......with something......................
listen mccoy isn't opposed to a one-night stand, but the mind meld was a little.....that was new for him. but he agreed to it, and everything's fine, and he's probably never gonna see spock again, so it's—
years later, kirk notes, but doesn't voice, how suspicious it is that spock, who's Always got an opinion on staffing the crew, somehow has No Comment Whatsoever when doctor piper asks for a transfer, and kirk wants to bring his good pal and top doctor leonard mccoy on board.
mccoy is too excited about the drool-worthy sickbay to pay too much attention to anything else when he agrees to come aboard, so imagine his surprise when, standing at kirk's side in the transporter room, waiting to greet him, is his old flame
but it's finespock's not talking about it, so mccoy won't either, he's a grown man and can fully pretend they never had a thing, in fact it's probably better that way, because if kirk ever found out—
except then something's Wrong with spock, something to do with vulcan biology, and—
what a thing, to find out on the surface on vulcan, the heat so suffocating you can feel it in your bones, the air thin enough that you have to force yourself to breath steadily instead of gasping—
what a thing, to find out that the bond between t'pring and spock was frayed due to the bond he made with you, during that mind meld, during that one-night stand, in that little cell, in that strange moment so many years ago.
what a thing to think you're going to your old flame's wedding, and instead (because he never fucking tells you anything), you discover that you're here to force the issue of divorce, because (DESPITE THE FACT YOU'VE SERVED TOGETHER OVER A YEAR ON THE ENTERPRISE HE'S NEVER TOLD YOU) your bond supplanted the weak bond he and t'pring had been forced into in childhood.
WHAT A THING TO DISCOVER YOU'VE BEEN VULCAN MARRIED TO THIS PRICK FOR LIKE SIX YEARS NOW
very funny by the way if the ritual rolling around to the death still has to go forth, and kirk demands mccoy pick him as his champion because he doesn't want mccoy murdered and spock can't do it since in this scenario he's the "prize", not t'pring, so it's kirk and stonn (since t'pring can't pick kirk) rolling around in the dirt over spock (mccoy still saves the day with the hypo)
mccoy is having a very difficult day.
(spock, attempting to soothe his doctor, but in that fucking-with-him way that's his specialty, insists on paying homage to mccoy's heritage as well, by carrying him over the threshold when they're back on the ship
mccoy then has to treat spock's bruised ribs where mccoy instinctively elbowed him as hard as he could when spock grabbed him
spock still manages to carry mccoy over the threshold
kirk has photographic proof of it, alas)
#spones#star trek#star trek tos#leonard mccoy#spock#listen i have a soft spot for spock playing the long game for literally no reason besides the fact that he's an absolute nightmare#what can i say.#tos writing ref#amok time#st:tos

the first time you reblogged the kiss prompt I was like aaah I want all of these for spirk and I ended up not submitting any at all from sheer feeling overwhelmed by the selection.
but i've been thinking about it and i'm so glad you reblogged it, I was gonna go digging for it!
Still can't decide though, there are so many good scenarios, so maybe any of 4, 10, 17, 18, 23, 28, 38, 46 for Spirk?
... in relief.
It happened in the space of a moment.
First, Spock had been dead. Kirk had been sure of it. The transporter had failed at exactly the wrong moment, and where a Vulcan was supposed to stand, serene, on the transporter pad, instead was simply - nothing. Empty space.
Spock had beamed off the planet, yes, but he never made it to the ship. Dead not to some heroic cause, but mere mechanical failure, leaving his atoms scattered in the black expanse of space so very far from home.
It seemed cruel. Senseless.
Kirk had seen death before, many times, but somehow no loss had hit him as hard as this one did, an icy dagger between his ribs. All Kirk could manage in its wake was to grip the edge of the control panel with shaking hands, barely able to keep himself upright under the weight of the grief which knotted thorny vines throughout his chest.
Spock! Kirk despaired, a sob building in his throat.
But then, the transporter grated again into motion, a terrible whine leaving it as a beam of light slowly consolidating into a heartrendingly familiar form. Kirk stared, half agony and half hope, hardly daring to imagine it was possible. The beam wavered, then settled, and there he suddenly was - somewhat ruffled, yes, but upright and breathing.
The most beautiful creature that Kirk could imagine - Spock, alive! - stood at attention on the transporter pad, and Kirk could do nothing else but take him by the arms and kiss him. It was sheer animal instinct, urging him to grasp what once was thought lost and draw it close.
Those narrow lips were shockingly plush beneath his own, and Kirk basked for a moment in the heat of them, the air that puffed gently between them, proof of life. Relief and adoration spilled from Kirk's every pore as he kissed Spock, working to memorize the contours of his mouth.
Dimly, it occurred to Kirk that he had never done this before. He had dreamed of it, certainly, but never once had he actually kissed Spock. Idly, he wondered why.
Then, quite abruptly, he remembered.
He yanked himself away, a desperate apology tripping to the tip of his tongue, but when he looked up into Spock's face, instead of horror or disgust or stiff rigidity, he saw-
Kirk blinked, dazed. Perhaps he had been too hasty when he had called Spock's earlier appearance, "the most beautiful he could imagine," because this, he thought, might just beat it.
Spock's eyes were loosely closed, dark lashes fanning out over olive-dusted cheekbones. There was no crease between his brows, no mark of discomfort or frigidness which closed him off to the world around him. Instead, their slant suggested some far gentler emotion. His typical lipstick had long since worn away, exposing the natural sage of Spock's lips, which here held soft and slightly parted. Slowly, Spock blinked his eyes open, sending those lashes fluttering. Spock gazed at Kirk, eyes so lovely a brown, and Kirk's heart couldn't help but stutter in his chest at the sweetness of his expression.
Spock looked like a man who had just been kissed.
Spock looked like a man who would like to be kissed again.
Kirk's apology died on his lips, and for a long moment he stood frozen, simply staring, mouth agape. Then, Spock tilted his head, gently inquisitive, and time took effect once more.
"I'm, ah - glad you're back safe, Mr. Spock," Kirk said, looking down and coughing lightly as heat flooded into his cheeks. "I feared for a moment there that you were space dust."
"Indeed," Spock replied, dipping his head. Something almost like a smile sat in the corners of his lips, secret and teasing. "Your greeting was... most unusual, Captain."
"Unusual," Kirk mused quietly. His eyes were fixed just beyond Spock's elbow before he snapped them up again, scanning Spock's face for each telltale trace of emotion. "...not unwelcome?"
And, oh, it was beautiful to see how that almost-smile twitched ever so slightly wider, setting Spock's eyes alight with a subtle glow. "No, Captain," he said. "Not unwelcome. Quite the opposite, in fact."
"I see," said Kirk, and something warm and giddy unfolded inside of his chest, fluttering. A smile which he was certain Bones would call "sickeningly besotted" was spreading helplessly across his face; Kirk couldn't bring himself to try to stifle it. "That's - good to know."
On a whim, he darted forward, pressing another brief peck to the corner of Spock's mouth.
"Very good to know indeed."

'half agony half hope' - yes yes famous Austen quote which i stole/paraphrased for gay purposes but the reason i bring it up --#WHY did i have myself ENTIRELY convinced that 'half hope half agony' was the correct order?!! and HOW?#i've been misremembering it? for YEARS?? embarrassing! (not that i've had occasion to use it but Still. sad!)#additional unnecessary information: i say 'the heat of them' about spock's lips but i DO think of vulcans as cooler than humans#HOWEVER - you are very cold if you're dead. so To Me the line's not 'spock's hotter than kirk' it's 'spock alive is hotter than spock dead'

Later that evening:

A few months later:

Imma tell you all about Vulcan for a bit. I'm not gonna google anything, this is all memory
So back in the early 1800s or maybe mid 1800s, whatever, pre 1900s, they're looking at Neptune. Neptune has a funky little wobble in its orbit. One smart guy (whose name I don't remember) is like damn that wobble makes sense if there's another planet out there.
So they map out what this other planet's orbit would logically be and lo and behold there's Uranus (they had time to think of a name, I still can't believe they went w Uranus). Shortly after this - maybe this is when it's the mid 1800s. I don't know when Uranus is actually found - they spot Mercury!
Holy shit another planet!
And look at it wobble! Well, fuck me with a poker, says another man I don't remember, we've seen that before with Neptune and Uranus. There's another planet!
Lordy, just how many planets are out here?
So they map out Mercury's orbit and where this extra planet would need to be to have the impact it clearly does. They name it Vulcan. It goes into text books and solar system maps.
So yeah, in between Mercury and the sun is another planet called Vulcan for a few years. Literally, it's accepted fact.
Unfortunately Vulcan is on the other side of the sun for a while and they can't confirm. Then when they look there's no planet there but like,, Maybe they're off by a degree? They do some more maths and are like no yeah there should def be a planet there wtf?
Eventually they accept there's no planet and, with embarassment, remove Vulcan from school books. Then they sit down and think about it
Maybe Einstein is involved here, maybe they just use his principles? When was Einstein? I'm terrible w dates.
Anyway, turns out this is gravity causing time dilation.
The sun is a big fat gravity causer. There's just so much funky gravity coming out of her. And it's pretty patchy, esp with the solar flares and so on. So sometimes with gravity playing a complex game the straightest path from Mercury's pov is different to the straightest path from our pov. This makes sense on a visual level for me, and I don't know how to explain it further
If we were on Mercury it would look like we're going in a perfect orbit. But from Earth's pov it's a bit wobbly! Neptune is far away and didn't have the same impact from the sun, so that was all just Uranus. I think we do see a little bit of wobble in Venus too, and from Mars we'd look funky. But I think that's a very miniscule amount, with that space measuring equipment rather than just eyes and compasses
Anyway that's Vulcan, the real planet that doesn't exist. There's a great book on it, The Search for Vulcan. Probably also written by a guy whose name I've forgotten lol, but it's written well.
Okay I am gonna google, but just to try and find a picture to back me up
That's from the Smithsonian ^
I like the not-quite-real planet Vulcan
#vulcan#space facts#i own the search for vulcan#but i cant find it rn#mightve leant it out to a mate

it’s official!! First, Best Destiny -- Part 1 by the lovely @ophelia-j finally has the physical form that it deserves!! here’s a little photoshoot of the finished product (:
to see how i bound this book i have another post that can be found here.

next up: specialty pages!!
first off there are these title pages

and then the copyright page!

the table of contents!
*note: i did remove the chapter notes to format it more like a “real” book. (looking back, i honestly wish i hadn’t because i do always love reading those!) because i removed the notes, i decided to include which episode/movie the chapters follow in the table of contents!!

the chapter headers!! THEORETICALLY it says t'hy'la in vulcan script.

and then i have this TBC page that i stuck in right before the epilogue!

this is such a small detail but it honestly might be one of my favorite parts. i did my very best to emulate a real book's design, so i have this fun little barcode/QR code at the very back. and!! the QR code links to the actual Ao3 story!! how cool is that???

conclusion!!
throughout every step of the bookbinding process i was mentally like "this is gonna be the step where it ALL FALLS APART" and??? it never did??? like? i just made a 900 page book??? that's crazy guys.
anyways!! i am so, so, SO thrilled that i am now the proud owner of a physical copy of First, Best Destiny -- Part 1.
*sidenote for the author!! thank you so much for all your support on my last post - it actually made my day! <33

Why Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a (very good) fanfic
I like SNW, for the most part. I enjoy the characters and it's nice to see largely episodic Trek again. But the idea that it fits into the existing canon is pretty easy to debunk.
Honestly, Paramount is promoting an illusion when it presents canon as a singular thing which runs from series to series as an unbroken continuity. It's not just a matter of minor glitches; those happen within episodes. It's that each show is written by different people with a different idea of how the universe even works.
Memory Alpha is partly to blame for this. Instead of actually recording what happens in the show, they construct timelines and smooth over inconsistencies to give the impression that the number of moons Vulcan does or doesn't have is a matter of simple canonical record, which it isn't. (This is an attitude that bugs me in Bible scholarship too. We can't just say "John says Jesus was crucified sometime after noon and the synoptics say nine am," oh no. They fiddle with it and explain it away and then tell us Jesus was on the cross from noon to three like that is an established historical fact.)
Anyway, if we approach Star Trek like atheist scripture scholars, we should be taking each series as a separate account with its own slightly different worldview. This was obvious by the time Enterprise came out. TOS takes place in a time not long after the invention of the warp drive, where the Enterprise is one of only twelve starships and sent on a long-range mission far beyond where humans had traveled before. Their technology is new and clunky and there's an obvious frontier feel. You really gonna tell me the NX-01 had virtually all the same tech and the warp drive a hundred years earlier?
No, and if we want to play it Watsonianly (as I prefer to) we should say that all the time travel monkeyed irreparably with the timeline, such that the Eugenics Wars happened in the 90s but then, after many different time travel events, it has been moved back to the 2040s or so. First Contact moved earlier, maybe WWIII won't happen at all. And so on.
Therefore, when you're dealing with TOS there shouldn't be this pressure to try to fit SNW events into it. You shouldn't feel the need to make Spock a guy with a long heterosexual history in a TOS fic—you can simply read him as the gay or ace guy he is clearly written as.
This is clear from the very first episode of SNW, where T'Pring proposes to Spock. In TOS they've been more than betrothed since the age of seven. There's never any sign that those two had an actual relationship. If they did, why is the only picture Spock has of her, of her as a child? That would be pretty weird!
"Charades" made this even more obvious as T'Pring's mother objects to their relationship. She set it up! In arranged marriage cultures, you don't have to impress your mother-in-law, you have to impress your betrothed!
The Chapel thing, too, is an issue. First off, her reason for being on the Enterprise in TOS is to search for her fiance, Roger Korby. If she'd been on the Enterprise before, under Pike, that would be a really odd thing to say.
But her relationship with Spock is of course the really odd part. The creators were trying to make a reason for why she pines after him in TOS. But she doesn't pine for him like an ex, she pines for him like she's curious. It's very apparent that she hasn't had sex with him before:
CHAPEL: Mister Spock.
SPOCK: What is it, Nurse?
CHAPEL: Mister Spock, (takes his hand) the men from Vulcan treat their women strangely. At least, people say that, but you're part human too. I know you don't, you couldn't, hurt me, would you? I'm in love with you, Mister Spock. You, the human Mister Spock, the Vulcan Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Nurse, you should—
CHAPEL: Christine, please. I see things, how honest you are. I know how you feel. You hide it, but you do have feeling. Oh, how we must hurt you, torture you.
SPOCK: I'm in control of my emotions.
CHAPEL: The others believe that. I don't. I love you. I don't know why, but I love you. I do love you just as you are. Oh, I love you.
SPOCK: I'm sorry.
These two straight up haven't dated before.
Taking points like this, it's clear that we don't really need to worry about the fact that Spock's character is a little bit off. They're not rewriting his character; they can't, his character is a finished project between Nimoy and the TOS writers. They are writing their version of his character, which is different from mine. I daresay mine is a little more consistent with the source material than theirs, but not all fics are trying to be exact, and they're riffing off the idea in their own way.
As a fanfic writer, my conclusion is this: when I write a TOS fic, it uses TOS canon. Anything I steal from SNW is simply because it's cool, the way I borrow from other fics or from the novels. I needn't feel obliged to put Michael in every single fic about his childhood. I can write him as a virgin before Kirk if I want to.
Meanwhile I can also write an SNW fic where he leans into his human side and experiments with women and waxes his chest if I want to. And if I push his characterization more toward what I think it should be rather than what is on the screen, well, that's my business!
I hope I do not see a trend in fic toward so much respect for paramount's official universe canon that everyone feels like they have to stay consistent with SNW all the time. TOS isn't so why should your TOS fic be?

It made sense, McCoy thought in a daze, that after all the times beings with telepathic abilities had messed around in his head, something would get left behind.
He doesn't realize it at first. Chalks it up to being a people person, having dealt with enough personal and professional relationships as both a civilian and a physician to just know what a person is thinking and feeling. That's all it is.
Until he's working alone with Spock one night, both bent over microscopes in the lab, and he hears Spock say something quietly, with perhaps a triffle more emotion than he's used to hearing from the Vulcan - "This organism may take longer to classify than I had originally thought. Leonard will be sharing the lab with me for sometime, then. I . . . am not averse to this outcome."
"First of all," McCoy says, having perked up at the sound of his first name - not something Spock often addresses him as while on duty. "Kinda rude to talk about a man as if he's not in the same room, just a few feet away. Second of all-" and he turns, grinning at Spock’s slightly startled expression and raised eyebrows. "I'm pretty sure you just said you're enjoying my company."
The startled expression doesn't disappear. "I beg your pardon?"
"Now Mr. Spock, if you think I'm gonna let you take back what you just said-"
"Doctor," Spock says, clasping his hands behind his back and watching McCoy now with an expression more curious than anything else. "I did not say anything."
McCoy's smile falters. He feels an inkling of worry and growing curiosity not his own - he knows, somehow, that it's coming from Spock. It's then he realizes that his ability to pinpoint a person's thoughts and emotions - something that has seemed to grow stronger over the past few weeks - is not just due to his affinity as a people person.
Somewhere along the way, a telepathic being messed around in his head - and left some of their ability behind.

for star trek au. want to make more . we wll see. . info dump under cut. its a bit disjointed
this whole au endevour has had me reading all the wikis for andorians. like “transgender” on andoria would be a blanket term because of the four named “canon” sexes (and the unnamed sexes that would fall “between” these!. and who knows how many genders.) i'm not gonna get into it here . there's a lot to say .
andorians are militant and family oriented. child rearing is very important. they suffer near constant population issues; one cause is that they need four people to have one kid. andorians are traditionally polyamorous and pansexual but they wouldnt use these terms . barney cant cut it in an andorian polycule so barney dating one guy (WHO IS VULCAN!!!) and neither of them wanting kids = traditional andorians instantly dislike him. guy with the biggest target on his back. joined star fleet so people back home would stop eviscerating him. like now when barney loses an antenna he is treated nicely instead of being roasted until it grows back! so cool . andorians in star fleet would be more accepting of untraditional andorian relationships . i.e jennifer lower decks . but gordons a vulcan so thats gonna cause some issues also...
...dont get me started on gordon's relationship with Vulcans and how they would treat him... like NO ONE talks about sybok outside of final frontier (i think he was mentioned in snw ?) not even in DISCO where the s'chn t'gai family is a FUCKING FOCAL POINT. they pretend he doens't exist because vulcans put things into boxes and rationalize them away . and when they cant? dont acknowledge it. call it irrational and move on... and then in comes gordon (number one hater of the vulcan science academy btw) and he cant regulate his emotions like the majority of vulcans can. he makes many vulcans uncomfortable by just EXISTING. its like the prejudice spock has to deal with but times 100x because he CANT keep his cool. it's used to discredit him and to question his vulcan heritage . and its called a “defect” primarily by vulcan doctors. his brain is just more similar to a humans than a vulcans. its a congenital disorder by vulcan standards.
they were both dealt shit cards and born into a culture that doesn't work for them (or gordon finds out later about said culture and see it has no room for him), so waht do? escape to the stars. misfits congregate in star fleet. and barney runs hot like the vulcan deserts and gordon runs cold like the ice moon of andoria and in eachothers arms they are at home and accepted for being the outcasted assholes that they are . . . . . ... and gordon is a chocoholic. love wins.
#my next question is does pansexual include alien fucking or is alien fucking its own like. thing. that you add on a preexisting sexuality#star trek canon writers are afraid to answer our burning questions#freeman's mind#freemind#gordon freemind#barney's mind#barmey calhoun#buttermind#mindverse#mindverse star trek au
