Who does not love mangoes – with their unique flavor, fragrance and texture? The King among Fruit is thriving very well in Bangladesh, thanks to the modern methods of horticulture that are used to nurture the mango trees. Mangoes grow widely all over Bangladesh and there are innumerable varieties to charm the connoisseur. Each variety has its own admirers. Some of the better mangoes are the superior grafted varieties whereas the local or Deshi aam is grown from seedlings.
The main mango growing regions are around Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Nawabganj, and Dinajpur. The better varieties of mangoes have exotic names like Fazlee, Langda, Gopalbogh, Himsagar, Khirsapat, Ashhwina, Khisanbogh, Kuapahadi, Lata Bombai, Foria, Bombai, Kohitoor, Laksmanbhog, Mohanbhog, Misribhog etc. Fazli, Lengra, Gopalbhog and Khisrapat are considered to be the premier varieties – food fit for the Gods!
Each has its distinctive flavor and arguments about the superiority of one over the other can get very serious. Though these are table varieties, meant to be relished as cut fruit, there are others that are used for making jam, jelly, squash, chutney, and pickle. The raw green mango is even added to a dal or curry to enhance the flavor.
Once only Chapainawabganj was famous for growing mangoes, but huge mangoes are also produced in Rajshahi district. There are over 270 varieties of sweet edible mangoes in the Rajashahi region alone. Newer groves are being set up and high-quality fruit trees have been planted along the boundaries of the paddy fields.
December to February is when the mango trees blossom. These grafted mango plants quickly start bearing blossoms only a year or two after the planting. Mango growers try hard to nurture and support their young trees during this period. If all goes well at this time of the year the growers can expect a bumper crop of mangoes.
Mango is the leading seasonal cash crop of the northwestern region of Bangladesh and dominates the economy in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts. There is no large industry here. Most of the people are employed for different jobs on the orchards such as nursing, harvesting and packing mangoes for transportation during the season every year.

CULTIVAR PREFERENCE PATTERN AND AMYLOLYTIC ENZYME ACTIVITY OF MANGO MEALY BUG (Drosicha mangiferae G.) FED ON DIFFERENT HOST PLANT CULTIVARS | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY
To elucidate whether there is a cultivar preference of mango mealy bug, (Drosicha mangiferae G.), the number of them were counted in 30 cm branch of panicle randomly from four different directions in Fazli, Guti, Lakhanbhog, Gopalbhog and Langra cultivars at orchards of Kaligram and Chanchal of Malda.Similarly number of mango mealy bug present in 10 cm2 area of main trunk in those five cultivars were also noted. Oviposition preference, growth and weight gain pattern of mango mealy bug were also studied by feeding third instar nymphs of them with leaves of those different cultivars for two weeks. The number in the field and growth parameters of laboratory reared mango mealy bug have established the cultivar preference of mango as Fazli> Guti> Lakhanbhog> Gopal Bhog> Langra. The effect of food quality of different cultivars on the amylolytic enzyme activity was also carried out by measuring starch amount of different cultivars, quantifying protein and performing alpha-amylase assay of mango mealy bug fed on those cultivars. Green mangoes are sour. Mangoes are grown commercially in a large orchard. There are many kinds of mangoes grown here. The popular kinds are the Langra, the Gopalbhog, the Fazli, and the Ashwini etc. Rajshahi and Chapai Nayabganj are famous for mango in our country. In Bangladesh people make different types of jam with mangoes. Ripe mangoes are very tasty. People call it 'king of fruits.' The mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh.

Fruits are medium in size, spherical, average weight 230 g, TSS 23 %, edible portion 65 % and yield 8-10 t/ha. Commercial cultivation is not increasing as the yield is relatively low.

Khirsapat mango
The Khirsapat mango variety is one of the best mango varieties grown in this country. It is a medium seasonal and very popular commercial variety. Most of the people in the country prefer the breed. This variety is already recognized as a geographical indication product. Fruits are medium in size, oval, average weight 265g, TSS 23%, edible portion 67% and yield 15-20 t/ha. Cultivation of this variety has been widely expanded across the country.

Oviposition preference, growth and weight gain pattern of mango mealy bug were also studied by feeding third instar nymphs of them with leaves of those different cultivars for two weeks. The number in the field and growth parameters of laboratory reared mango mealy bug have established the cultivar preference of mango as Fazli> Guti> Lakhanbhog> Gopal Bhog> Langra. The effect of food quality of different cultivars on the amylolytic enzyme activity was also carried out by measuring starch amount of different cultivars, quantifying protein and performing alpha-amylase assay of mango mealy bug fed on those cultivars. Starch amount differed significantly in different cultivars. Fazli had highest amount of starch followed by Guti, Lakhanbhog, Gopalbhog and Langra. Availability of lesser starch in Langra or Gopalbhog caused down regulation of alpha-amylase in these less preferred cultivars. So, alpha-amylase and protein amount enzyme activity of mango mealy bug was found to be low in mealy bugs fed in Langra (0.017 U/ml ± 0.007) and Gopalbhog (0.019 U/ ml ± 0.0007) cultivars compared to highly preferred Fazli or moderately preferred Guti and Lakhanbhog. Fazli reared pest showed highest (0.047 U/ml ± 0.003) amylolytic activity followed by Guti (0.44 U/ml ± 0.0005) and Lakhanbhog (0.038 U/ml ± 0.001). This current study is very much helpful to choose the suitable cultivar for propagation. Moreover, the effect of nutrient on digestive physiology of insect can also be understood.
