There's no coherent definition of sea in the modern sense, because it's used to mean both "inland water body that's larger than a normal lake" and "historically notable near coastal waters", and the second isn't substantially distinguished from gulfs in common parlance. If we wanted to stick to something like the first definition, it makes sense to treat the Great Lakes (glacial scours) as being materially different than the Black Sea and Caspian Sea (inland water bodies with oceanic crust). And the Mediterranean is really more a gulf than a sea.
