Microsoft has plugged some key gaps in its 'new Outlook' for macOS, currently in preview and given a fresh update just a few days ago, but the product still has puzzling omissions that drive users back to the old version.
The revised Mac Outlook was first revealed at the Ignite event in late 2019. It appears to be a complete rebuild of the Mac email client, geared towards Office 365, but the question administrators will be pondering is whether important features in the existing Outlook will ever appear in the new one.
The history of Outlook on the Mac is inglorious. Microsoft and Mac go back a long way. Excel, for example, was a Mac application two years before it appeared on Windows. When it came to Outlook though, Mac users lost out. Outlook on Windows goes back to 1997, but the first full Mac version did not appear until Outlook 2011, and even that was not very good, slower than the Windows version and missing some features, such as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
VBA has never come to Outlook on the Mac, but a 2014 release was much improved, as Microsoft began to push the idea of Office 365 everywhere rather than keeping users hooked on Windows.

Fast-forward to today, and there is not that much missing in Outlook 365 for Mac versus Windows, VBA aside.
All that is set to change with the latest new Outlook Mac as the pendulum swings away from making the Mac Outlook close to the Windows one, and towards giving Mac users a more distinct experience. It is also a matter of protocols. The existing Outlook Mac uses Exchange Web Services (EWS) which is being phased out.
Outlook on Windows generally uses MAPI over HTTP, perhaps the nearest thing to a native Exchange protocol. Microsoft is not happy with either and for its 'modern' mail client in Windows 8 and Windows 10 it developed a new sync protocol. In the past this was sometimes called Hx but it seems now to go by the name Microsoft Sync.
When Microsoft acquired Accompli in 2014, whose product became Outlook Mobile, it used its own protocol but that too now uses Microsoft Sync. According to presentations at Ignite 2019, this new sync protocol is designed specifically for mail-related data and makes the best even of poor connections, prioritising recent data.
The move from EWS to Microsoft Sync enables new features and improved performance, and no longer downloads the entire mailbox to the local machine. System requirements are for macOS 10.14 Mojave and Office 365, Outlook.com or Gmail email accounts.
The snag with a rebuilt Outlook for Mac is that having nearly caught up with Windows Outlook, it is now far behind in terms of features. It is in preview and some will reappear, but it is unlikely to be the full set. It hardly qualifies as a mail client in its current incarnation, with no support for standard protocols like POP3 and IMAP, nor any way of connecting to on-premises Exchange.

'We don't support on-prem yet but it's going to come soon,' said Microsoft in November 2019; six months on it is not there yet. On the plus side, it not only looks pretty, with full support for the Mac's Dark Mode on Catalina, but also performs well, with a fluidity that frankly feels unusual in a Mac Outlook product.
Features of the new Outlook for Mac include a new unified inbox view that avoids clicking between accounts, if you have several configured. You can now reply to emails inline ('nested compose'), a convenience feature that has been in Windows Outlook for some time. There is a new 'ignore conversation' option. Creating meetings uses a new simplified dialogue that you can expand as needed.
As for the new features added in the June update, these include add-in support (a big deal), sensitivity labels for classifying confidential data, a People view for managing contacts, an option to create an event directly from an email, read receipts, and a 'coming soon' promise of the ability to open shared calendars and to encrypt emails with S/MIME.
The actual preview release did not quite live up to the promise. In particular, the People view is not yet enabled, thanks to some last-minute bug that was discovered. One gets the new Outlook by signing up to the Office 'Insider Fast' channel, and after the new version downloads and installs, one can switch back and forth by toggling a 'New Outlook' switch. If the user attempts to use a feature such as the People view, a message pops up inviting the user to switch back, wrecking the fluid experience but that is what one gets for trying a preview.

Microsoft has not specified a release date for the new Outlook Mac but a few things are clear. First, it will be the best Outlook yet, perhaps on any platform, in terms of appearance and design. This is not a high bar: Outlook on Windows is a mess from a user interface perspective, and has dialogues buried within that have not changed for decades. Performance also looks promising.
Second, Outlook Mac will be focused on cloud, especially Office 365, though it also already has good support for Google mail. Teams integration will also be strong and Microsoft has demonstrated features like converting an event to a Teams meeting, handy in times of lockdown.
Lastly, the problem of Outlook on Windows being different from Outlook on Mac will get worse. What if Microsoft replaces the Windows version with a similarly rebuilt product? Perhaps it will; but the difficulty is that Outlook is baked into the Windows ecosystem and forms part of workflows, some automated with COM technology, that will break if Microsoft replaces it. Custom add-ins, VBA projects, ancient APIs that remain for legacy reasons, all mean this will be a tricky application to replace.

• Further, you need to search for apps associated with Microsoft Office in the install apps list.
• After selecting the appropriate option, you will have to click Modify.
• Now click Yes on the confirmation window.
• Further, click Online Repair and again click the Repair option.
• Now restart the Outlook application and verify the status of the problem.
Note: If you are using Windows 7/8 then go to control panel > Programs. Now right-click on MS office and choose Change > Online repair. Now click Repair again and click Yes on the confirmation window.
Step 4. Create a new Outlook profile
• Open the Outlook email on your computer.
• Click the File tab on the top left corner.
• Now click Account Settings > Manage Profiles.
• After that, choose the option Show Profiles and then click Add.
• On the next window, Enter your name, outlook email ID, and password.
• Now Click Next to process further.
• After following on-screen instructions, you need to click Finish.
• Now navigate to the General tab and go to the Profile to be Used section and click Ok.
• Still, Outlook won’t open? Proceed to the next step.
Step 5. Repair outlook files and Reset the navigation pain
• Locate the Microsoft Office folder and run “SCANPST.EXE” and click Browse.
• Now click the Outlook data file and click Start to scan the file.
• Hit the Repair button if you find any error during the process.
• To reset the navigation pane open the Run dialogue box.
• Now type “Outlook.exe/resetnavpane” and hit Ok.
• Open the Outlook mail and check if the problem has resolved.

Starting Outlook in safe mode, which starts Outlook without add-ins loaded, can tell you if an add-in is the problem. Note: If you enabled an ABBYY FineReader add-in, an outdated version of the software might cause an Outlook startup error.
For more information, see Office programs may crash with the FineReader add-in installed. In the Choose Profiles dialog box, accept the default setting of Outlook and choose OK. If prompted, enter your password and choose Accept.
How do you know you're working in safe mode? You'll see a label similar to the one below at the top of the screen. The Outlook icon on your taskbar also alerts you the program isn't operating normally. If Outlook does start in safe mode, then the problem is likely with one of your add-ins. You'll need to disable all of your add-ins before restarting Outlook. At the bottom of the View and manage Office Add-ins , make sure the Manage box shows COM Add-ins , and then choose Go.
As a precaution, when the COM Add-ins listing of your current add-ins opens, do one of the following:. Manually record the title of every selected add-in listed under Available Add-ins. After you've captured the titles of the selected add-ins, clear all selected check boxes, and then choose OK. Caution: Click a check box to clear it. Don't select an add-in and choose Remove.
If you have administrator rights, you could actually delete the add-in. For this troubleshooting exercise, you want to disable , not delete , an add-in. Note: If the program loads properly, it's likely that one of your add-ins is the source of the error and you need to identify which one.
To determine which add-in is the problem, enable one add-in at a time. Select the check box next to an add-in you want to re-enable, and then choose OK. Repeat all steps until you've re-enabled all of the original add-ins and revealed the source of the error. Important: Remember, if Outlook opens in safe mode, you've revealed the add-in you just enabled as a source of the error. Restart Outlook again and disable the add-in you enabled that produced the problem, and then start Outlook.
Make sure you go through the restart-disable-restart process for every add-in that was originally enabled in Outlook. An error could be caused by more than one add-in. Your profile contains your Outlook settings. Occasionally, that profile can become corrupted.
You can determine if it's corrupt by creating a new profile and changing which profile is used when Outlook starts. For Windows 8 and Windows 10, choose Start , and then type Control Panel.
Note: For Windows 10, in Control Panel, make sure the View by box in the upper-right corner is set to Category. In the Profile Name box, type the name you want to use for your new profile.
On the Auto Account Setup page for the Add Account Wizard, under E-mail Account , fill in Your Name , E-mail Address , and Password , and then choose Next. Note: The Add Account Wizard automatically searches for your mail server settings. Choose Finish and you'll find the new profile name you added listed on the General tab in the Mail dialog box.
Under When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile , choose Prompt for a profile to be used , and then choose OK. In the drop-down list in the Choose Profile dialog box, choose the new profile name you created. Note: If Outlook starts normally, then you've identified your Outlook profile as being corrupt and the source of your problem. Should you decide to remove a profile, back up the data files first.
All offline cached content will be deleted when you choose Remove. For more information, see Introduction to Outlook Data Files. pst and. Outlook stores all your email messages, meetings and events, contacts, and tasks in data files. These files occasionally might become corrupted. You can run the Inbox Repair Tool scanpst. exe to scan your Outlook data files and repair errors.

Reinstalling indeed won't reset your configuration settings nor will it delete any of your email as I've blogged previously. To start with an "empty" Outlook, like when you configured it for the first time, you'll have to recreate your mail profile.
Additionally, there are various files that you can rename or command line switches that you can use to reset specific parts of Outlook. Your mail profile contains your mail account configuration settings and which pst-files are opened in Outlook. To reset your mail profile, open Control Panel via the Start Menu and double click the Mail applet. Press the Show Profile button to add or delete mail profiles. Note: For bit versions of Windows Vista you'll have to open the "View bit Control Panel" section first before you can see the Mail applet.
To determine the exact location of the mail applet for either version of Windows see; No Mail icon in Control Panel. Aside from the mail profile, Outlook also saves several settings in configuration files and Registry keys. Many of these are not part of the mail profile and thus these settings will be maintained. We are often asked if it is possible to run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac computer – the answer is YES you can! Watch our video summary to find out how.
We know quite a few users running SOLIDWORKS successfully on a Mac, and SOLIDWORKS recently updated their system requirements to include virtualisation such as parallels. However, the limit of this support is that although it will install, it may not run well as Macs rarely have supported graphics cards.
We therefore would NOT recommend this setup above a Windows based professional workstation.
Although SOLIDWORKS will run on OS X there are some major considerations to be aware of. SOLIDWORKS cannot run directly on macOS, so first you will need to install Windows on your Mac using an application such as Boot Camp or Parallels. There are other considerations such as graphics performance and the applications you are using SOLIDWORKS for. Other SOLIDWORKS Applications for Mac
SOLIDWORKS do develop several other applications that are available for macOS and iOS. This includes eDrawings Viewer for macOS, as well as eDrawings and eDrawings Professional for iOS. DraftSight is also available for macOS as a beta version.

Run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac - April 16, 2019
This is a fairly long-standing issue we come up against on the Innova Systems technical support desk, and also while talking to prospective customers about SOLIDWORKS. The simple answer is that SOLIDWORKS do not develop an Apple Mac version of the software, so we can’t install SOLIDWORKS natively.
We used to recommend the Bootcamp route, which involves installation of Bootcamp and then Microsoft Windows on the partition Bootcamp creates. The issue here is that if you need to access the Apple Mac Operating System (OS), you would need to shut down windows and boot up the Apple Mac OS, because they cannot be running simultaneously. This allows the full use of the hardware (RAM and graphics card) you have in your Apple Mac for Windows.
The alternative solution that we used to steer people away from is Parallels, a virtual machine software that allows you to run another OS inside the Mac OS (inside a window). The reason for not recommending this is that you are sharing the resource of the machine with two operating systems, thus not necessarily having the required resource to run a demanding program like SOLIDWORKS.
There were also historic problems with not being able to use the graphics card properly which would result in exceptionally slow performance when selecting things. This is due to most Macs not having certified graphics cards for SOLIDWORKS and parallels using a virtual graphics card driver or the default Windows driver. The virtual or generic drivers don’t offer the level of performance needed to run SOLIDWORKS correctly.

We have now installed and configured this on over 20 users’ Apple Mac computers and I have to say the response from these people has been amazing.
I have a mid 2014 MacBook Pro, which I’ve been using as a test bed. The specs are listed below:
You will note that this machine has Intel Iris Graphics (specific to the Mac) and not a certified graphics card for SOLIDWORKS.
So, I installed the latest version of Parallels (version 10) and a fresh copy of Windows 10 into the virtual environment and then set about making SOLIDWORKS work!
It’s pretty easy to get Windows installed, as Parallels guides you through that process very nicely. You can specify how much of the machine’s resource to give to the Windows OS – which is where a high spec Mac will stand you in better stead. It is always a good rule of thumb to assign half the available RAM to the Windows OS, so in my set up, I assigned 4GB of RAM.
The difficult bit is making the “Use Software OpenGL” button inside SOLIDWORKS become accessible. When you first install SOLIDWORKS, this button is ticked and greyed out, so we can’t turn it off. In our opinion, SOLIDWORKS is unusable at this point, as selecting geometry and navigating the software is too slow to be productive.
With a bit of effort, and some registry modifications, I was able to untick the OpenGL box, allowing us to use the graphics card to a much higher potential. The difference in performance was huge, and it allowed me to select and navigate the software much, much faster. One limitation that frustrated me early on was the lack of RealView Graphics (Accurate reflections and appearances), so I set about solving this problem too. I’m happy to report that RealView works perfectly on a properly specced Mac Book Pro!
Of course, this isn’t necessarily a new solution – Parallels has been around for some time, and installing Windows on a Mac for as long. The difference with our solution is that we can make SOLIDWORKS behave as well as a normal windows PC. No more slow selecting or poor rotational speed.
Above is a screenshot of the working set up, albeit in Window mode, not full screen. I have this running at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 in full screen mode and it is functioning very well. Please note: the specification of my Mac, and the resource I can assign to Windows is far from ideal. It would be recommended for people who are creating fairly simple parts with up to 100 features, and assemblies containing up to 500 components. Any more than that, and I think it would struggle.
In summary, the Parallels solution is now recommended by Innova Systems. We are confident of this working well in a production environment, but the spec of the Mac is key to the success. Along with our modifications to the registry in Windows, of course.

The following notes of this guide assume that:
You are using the Chrome browser.
You have already downloaded the image and it's in your Downloads folder using the steps above.
Note: Only if you are using an older version of Mac OSX, unzipping the CloudReady file you downloaded may not work as expected. If you experience issues, try using the free Mac utility 'Unarchiver' to unzip the file.
Install and launch the Chromebook Recovery Utility
Download and add the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension to your Chrome browser.

You must have this extension installed to create a CloudReady installer.
1. Add Chrome Recovery Utility to Chrome: After clicking on the link above, you'll be brought to the following Chrome Web Store website;
Click 'Add to Chrome' in the top right-hand corner.
2. Confirm & Install: On the Add 'Chrome Recovery Utility' prompt:
Click 'Add app'
3. Launch: The Chromebook Recovery Utility will now be installed and will show up on the Apps Page of your Chrome browser.
Click on the Recovery icon highlighted below.
Note: This should popup automatically, if it doesn't, type chrome://apps in the address bar of your Chrome browser.
Create the USB Installer
Note: As a general rule of thumb it is recommended to ensure the USB you are using has been formatted before continuing with the steps mentioned below. To format your USB using the Google Chrome Recovery Utility follow the steps mentioned here.
1. Initial Screen: Once launched, you should see the below screen.
2. Locate the gray gear icon on the top right of the window.
3. Browse for Local Image: Click the gray gear icon and choose Use local image and locate the cloudreadyXXXX.bin.zip file in your Downloads folder.
4. Insert USB device: When prompted, insert your 8 GB or larger USB flash drive and choose the corresponding drive on the screen. Note: -During the process, it is normal for the utility to show unusual percentages. -Proceeding with this step will erase the target flash drive. Proceed with caution.

5. Process Complete: When the process is completed, remove the USB flash drive from your computer. Congratulations, your USB flash drive is now a CloudReady installer and is ready to use!
