The Yatagarasu anime is so BL-coded, so I’m inevitably a YukiWaka shipper. As an anime-only, I wonder what the experience is like to those who read the novel/manga first...

I have no complaints about Hamayu being chosen in the end because she’s cool and I like her, but not gonna lie, it caught me off guard when her history with Wakamiya was revealed and when Wakamiya suddenly acted so familiarly with her. I did not connect her at all to the ragged kid who was with Wakamiya in Asebi’s flashback, so the whole Wakamiya-Hamayu pairing feels sudden to me.

Was the pairing perhaps built up more in the novel/manga?

Yatagarasu: The raven does not choose its master

Started watching today and sped through 13 episodes. After the first episode  I said that if this is a romance featuring a specific girl I’m not really interested because her personality and character was too ‘y/n’ quoted if you get me? It was like a blank slate but she was characterized as the nice, shy, not too knowledgeable of social constructs etc etc type of person, like a game. BUT I’m glad I still watched it because the characters and twists are actually good and interesting. Like this is a sign to check it out.

But I can’t lie I was really focused on and enjoying the brothers Natsuka and Nazukihiko's dynamic. 

The MINUTE I heard Natsuka talk all I heard was my man, my man, my man, Rengoku

He looking like Geto and sounding like Rengoku making for an interesting combo.

SPOILERS/THOUGHTS ON YATAGARASU EPISODE 13

we've finally reached the end of books 1 and 2, and boy did the directors not disappoint! we're also past the point where manga/anime only folks (myself included) know what's going to happen, and im super excited to see where next week's episode is going to take us.

that MUSIC during the reveal of asebi's hidden actions contrasted with her "innocent" expression/mannerisms with the cherry blossoms billowing elegantly around her made me all the more creeped out and uncomfortable. she really manipulated princess fujinami, takimoto, and her attendant ukogi so flawlessly that they're all tripping over their shoes to defend her not even realizing until it's too late how they've been played. ive always loved mystery as a genre, so i was pleasantly surprised to get my dose of that here with wakamiya playing the brutally honest but fair detective. he's so clever...

but also, they cut out masuho-no-susuki's conversation with hamayu where the former pledges her allegience to the latter and vows to become her lady in waiting?? whyyyyy i loved that scene in the manga and i always felt like they were forshadowing that servant/master relationship with how their positions in the posters mirrored yukiya/wakamiya's:

i mean, just look at how hamayu's in the foreground with her head tilted to face the same exact direction as wakamiya's and masuho-no-susuki being the only one of the four women/girls looking to her left just like yukiya.

i don't know if masuho-no-susuki will come back as a recurring character but i genuinely hope she does (i'd love to see more masuho-no-susuki/hamayu interactions)

The Yokohama Geigi website has been updated this April with two new portraits: Yûtsuki 結月 (she has been working with the Yokohama Geigi since autumn last year already) and Hamayû はまゆう (she was among the new faces shown in February). Both are in the "Hamakko" category, which is a unique term in Yokohama for Geigi apprentices like Maiko or Hangyoku. From what I have obseved, they don't have any visual characteristics to set them apart from the fully fledged Geigi. With this update, it seems that Kanayuki 叶雪 (first seen October 2023) has retired. In this instagram post from 24. Feb 24, it's mentioned that the amount of Yokohama Geigi is growing. Judging from the group photo, it seems that there are 2-4 new and perhaps one returning Geigi. I'm curious what their names are!

… Hamayu is infatuated with Masuho no Susuki that she’d “marry her in a heartbeat if she were a man.”

She’s only joking/taking a piss you’d say. Perhaps…

But does she really?

Chapter 37

No wonder Hamayu keeps on teasing her ever since they’ve known each other at the Sakura Blossom Palace. That kind of love and hate relationship. From enemies to friends… And somehow, Masuho begins to like her due to her selflessness. Both of them pushing each other to be Wakamiya’s consort. Exalting the other. You know, “Don’t take me, take her! She’s worth it!” “No, not me, take her instead! I am nothing compared to her!” kind of thing.

The thing about Hamayu is that she exudes a masculine energy. In the anime, maybe it is the strength of the voice actor Hiroki Nanami, she can make Asebi red on the face.

Whereas in Chisato Abe’s character correlation chart from the fan book, Hamayu finds Masuho “cute, pretty, adorable (かわいい! かわいい!)”

Masuho, on the other hand, “I hate to admit it, but she’s a good woman. ‘Please be happy, or I won't forgive you!’”

Straight from my shipping heart:

In a way, I don’t think Wakamiya would have an issue with it as he pointed out, “But I will not allow you to complain or to become intimate with any other man.”

Besides, he keeps on leaving Hamayu to search for an adventure, err, to make sure that the inhabitants of Yamauchi are safe, with Yukiya.

I am not sure how far will Masuho practise her becoming a nun in the novel. Nor I don’t know (yet) how far will she be and her amorous adventures in the book series. (There were talks of an unrequited love…) But for the sake of asking a hypothetical question, in Japanese Buddhism, celibacy is a personal choice.

When the Japanese Buddhist Saint Hônen (1133-1212) was asked whether a Buddhist religious person should be celibate or not, he said: «If it is easier for him or her to express faith by reciting the Buddha’s name alone, he or she should be celibate. If it is easier to do that with a spouse, it is better to marry. What is important is only how one expresses one’s faith in reciting the Buddha’s name.»

So, yes, I am not joking. I ship them!

I have a confession to make: Before watching the anime, I thought Wakamiya and Hamayu were the same person 😭😭😭

I know they have different eye colors, but I thought that was just some magic thing. And just going from the gifs I saw of them, I couldn’t tell if they were extremely pretty women or just bishounen. Both are androgynous, you know?

I don't know enough about the specific titles that they're using in this dialogue to pick it out if the spoken line is less ambiguous, but I do love how the sub isn't 100% clear if Hamayu means the Crown Prince or the Elder Prince when she says "who knows how he really feels?"

Hamayu also says she's just here as a spectator, which is so fascinating cause. Why are you here!!! Why would a family send you, if you're not empassioned to become Empress in some way, be it for love of family or love of the Prince?

This is also one of the good examples of Asebi not being as naive as she's been portrayed so far, and makes it questionable how much of what she does is an act or not. Hamayu says that, and Asebi... doesn't push! She doesn't question it at all, she knows she just got a lot of info, and probably understands trying for more would be a bit much, after Hamayu was being considerate of her. So she gets up and bows and turns to leave.

But of course, we also need the Plot interest as well as the Story interest (or maybe it's the other way around, it's hard to say where the supernatural and the politics diverge sometimes) So Hamayu tells us that the Prince is rumored to be a true kin'u (which is the title we're using for Golden Raven, if I hadn't spelled that out before). We know there's one around, because of the opening scene, but do we know it's the Prince? Not as of yet.

Asebi just questions what "real" is supposed to be here.
