Champaign Ch D R1: Hans Hach Verdugo/Szymon Walkow [2] def. Roy Stepanov/Saba Purtseladze 6-2, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
It was a clear-cut dominance from H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow as they tried to take advantage of R. Stepanov/S. Purtseladze's erratic start, starting from going after their risky second serves until utilizing the open court as they took the ball as early as possible. From here, the second seeds dominated from their first serves, winning 87% of their first serve points with their 2 aces complimenting the percentage, while the unseeded pair's 3 double faults did not help their rushing tendency as it faded their second serve percentage to 40%, followed by the second seeds' 100% break point conversion rate out of their 3 opportunities to break.
Interestingly, H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow was defeated by a rising British pair in Joshua Davis/James Mackinlay 6-3, 3-6, [8-10] in a more competitive quarterfinal match. They will face wild cards and current University of Illinois students Tyler Bowers/Zachary Viiala, who previously defeated Hady Habib/William Woodall 6-3, 6-0 in a straightforward fashion. This could be a fun match, but only the slightest points determine the rest of the flow!

The other night, the penultimate action in the Champaign Challenger featured another first-round doubles match in first-time pairing Roy Stepanov/Saba Purtseladze facing second seeds Hans Hach Verdugo/Szymon Walkow. As one-way traffic as this match appeared to be, they happened thanks to the latter pair's anticipation and accurate point construction throughout the match.
2 games into the match, S. Purtseladze's service games became more risky, as evident with 3 consecutive double faults that set up the second seeds' break point before their timely forehand volley immediately converted it to 2-1. Afterward, H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow smoothly consolidated their position to 3-1, followed by the unseeded pair keeping in touch with a service game hold to 3-2.
It took two games later before a +1 backhand pass from H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow set up their lead before holding their serves to 5-2. Taking advantage of another error from R. Stepanov/S. Purtseladze, another working forehand volley from the second seeds equalized the point before their return winners created their set point, which was converted with another working volley to break for the first set 6-2, asserting their dominance since.

Sioux Falls Ch D R1: Hans Hach Verdugo/Szymon Walkow [2] def. Jody Maginley/Lucas Horve 4-6, 7-5, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Maginley/L. Horve had fair chances as they were up a set and a break until the third game of the second set, but H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow stayed composed while trying to utilize the open court to their advantage, which started their turnaround toward the end of the match. The former tried to sustain their range and shift their moment again, but it was insufficient to match the latter's range in this flow. As a result, even though both players broke 3 times throughout the match, H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow generated more chances to break with 8.
Besides, it turned out that both pairs had distinct service game strengths throughout the match. J. Maginley/L. Horve might have scored two times more aces than the second seeds (4 to 2), but the latter still won 3% more first serve points to get themselves out of some troubles. However, the second seeds double-faulted 6 times, twice more than J. Maginley/L. Horve, which faded their second serve percentage to 47%, 5% lower than the unseeded pair throughout the match.
In the quarterfinals, H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow will face Patrick Kypson/Eliot Spizzirri, who knocked out Roy Stepanov/Kelsey Stevenson 6-4, 6-2 in a separate, more straightforward first-round match (upcoming match report). This could be an intriguing encounter of their offensives, but considering the latter's frequent singles playing entourage, the general balance could play a significant role in determining who stands out later today. This definitely could be an exciting clash!

The match tie-break turned out to be a neat part of the match as a preceding forehand to J. Maginley/L. Horve's forehand error causing H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow's mini-break to 2-1 before the latter held to 3-1, which was continued with their forehand winner to J. Maginley slipped rolling on the court trying to respond, where the second seeds held to 4-1 by the end of that point. J. Maginley/L. Horve then held their serves to 4-2 with an unreturned serve.
Somehow, a perfect volley poach from H. Hach Verdugo extended his and S. Walkow's lead to 7-3, but J. Maginley/L. Horve minimized the gap, most notably with a backhand return winner to 7-6, but they got mini-broken back thanks to the former's forehands to 8-6. Ultimately, H. Hach Verdugo/S. Walkow served it out as they won the match tie-break 10-7, securing their spot in the quarterfinals as a result.
