London playlist
Tumblr media
London - since 43 AD it has to be one of the more fascinating cities on Earth. Such a rich history. From Shakespeare Theatre to the music from there today. I just had to put a London playlist together. From Soho to Brixton, from Highgate to Clapham  what a collection of songs! It’s over 350 songs and it could easily expand to 400. **I have a separate England & Wales playlist coming, so, stay tuned for that**.

Yo, ummmm top 5 gender songs
And uhhh top 5 songs that I think would be on a character playlist for you if you were a fictional character
😁😁💜
HMM OKAY gender songs let's go
5 presumably dead arm by sidney gish SPECIFICALLY 617 session. the melody (that's the high one right. help I haven't had a music class since 8th grade) is lilting and hopeful, but ultimately melancholy and combined with a nie operatic performance from sidney gish with all her powerful note changes . literally soo gender
4 he's a whore by cheap trick . I'm the he in question (whore)
3 cop car by mitski. cmon we ALL knew there had to be at LEAST 1 mitski song . that's just who I am !! idk if I can explain it properly but it's like gender for the opposite reasons to presumably dead arm - its gritty and cruel, the harmony (presuming that's the low one) reminds me of a dark alleyway , where the shadows are adjusting just a little too much for comfort. very my gender is a horror movie
2 modify by lemon demon BODYMODS !!!! I wanna get a dagger hung from my septum are you KIDDING
1 I wish I was the moon by neko case my gender is the moon. sometimes in a werewolf way sometimes in a lonely way
AND top 5 songs I think my fandom would call my anthems if I was a fictional character
5 sunny December by bombadil . I feel like people who would call themselves frankie defense squad would also have abandonment issues and cling to music about it with their life. I sound like Im giving a criticism but know fully well I do this for all my faves too so
4 real men by mitski . I have the tendency to suppress all facial expressions in public and refuse to admit "weakness" (read: negative emotions other than anger and also happiness) and people would make that a big part of my personality I think
3 I am woman by emmy meli this one is mostly to represent that I would get misgendered . this is a banger tho
2 silk chiffon by muna and pheobe bridgers bc im a lesbian
1 autoclave by the mountain goats . VILLAIN COMPLEX MOMENT !!!

1988 interview with Dean. This is a really good one and helps bring more of his life into perspective. Note: the newspaper originally censored his swearing, but I’ve put it back.
Guthman, Edward. "Dean Stockwell: Third Time's a Charm." The San Francisco Examiner (San Francisco, California), August 14, 1988.
“Six years ago, Dean Stockwell's acting career had turned to dust. Reduced to playing parts in unreleasable, made-in-Mexico movies that now make him cringe, Stockwell decided to chuck it all and get out of Hollywood.
“Along with his second wife, Joy, Stockwell moved to Santa Fe, settled down under the wide New Mexico sky and applied for a real estate license. He even placed an ad in Daily Variety to announce his exile: 'Dean Stockwell will help you with all your real estate needs in the new center of creative energy.'
“Stockwell never sold a house; he didn't need to. Instead, almost as soon as he'd relocated, things started happening to the former 1940s child star. It began with a small part in David Lynch's 'Dune,' and escalated with an important supporting role in Wim Wenders' highly regarded 'Paris, Texas.'
“Moving back to California to cash in on his fortune, Stockwell acted in 'Beverly Hills Cop II,' 'Gardens of Stone,' and 'To Live and Die in L.A.' He also played a cameo role, as Howard Hughes, in the newly released 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream.' And in 'Blue Velvet,' David Lynch's American nightmare, he delivered a chilling cameo as Ben, a waxlike, sexually ambiguous drug dealer.
“And now, at 52, Stockwell says he's found 'the favorite role I've had, by far.'
“The picture is 'Married to the Mob,' a dark, romantic comedy by Jonathan Demme ('Melvin and Howard,' 'Stop Making Sense') and Stockwell plays Mafia don Tony 'the Tiger' Russo. Wearing an Al Capone fedora and full-length vicuna coat, Tony is a rich, sardonic, larger-than-life character -- the kind Stockwell has never had a chance to play until now.
“Opening Friday at the Galaxy and UA the Movies, 'Married to the Mob' has been touted as Demme's first shot at a genuine box-office winner. Set in Long Island, New Jersey and Florida, it stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Angela DeMarco, a young Mafia wife who tries to start a new life when her husband, Frankie 'the Cucumber' DeMarco, is pumped full of lead during a hot-tub tryst at the Fantasia Motel.
“When Stockwell's character isn't ordering hits, drug deals and the dumping of toxic waste, he's lusting assiduously after the gorgeous widow. Meanwhile, bumbling FBI agent Mike Downey (played by Matthew Modine) is jumping through hoops trying to shadow Angela and 'catch Tony with his pants down.' Instead, he falls in love with Angela.
“During a recent luncheon interview, not far from his central California home, Stockwell spoke about the film, about his new happiness as the father of two children and about the bizarre trajectory of his long career. Dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and slacks, wearing a Panama hat and drawing first on a cigaret, later on a cigar, Stockwell emanates prosperity and calm.
“'I don't know why I was unemployed so long,' he says, reflecting on a fallow period that started in the '60s and lasted the better part of two decades. 'The only thing I can figure out in my own mind is that, for some reason or another, I was being made to wait until a certain time in my life when my talent would reach its full maturity and fruition.'
“Ironically, he says, he felt just as equipped 10 years ago to do the work he's doing now -- 'only I couldn't get fucking arrested.'
“Today, Stockwell sees harmony in the fact that his new success coincides with the arrival of two children. His son, Austin, will be 5 in November, and his daughter, Sophia, turns 3 this month. Inordinately proud and protective, he refuses to allow his children to be photographed, and also requests that the town in which he and his family reside not be named. (There were no children from his first marriage, to Millie Perkins, which lasted from 1960 to 1962.)
“'I want to make a lot of money and I want to put it away for my children,' he says. To that end, Stockwell has been snapping up job offers. 'A lot of people ask me, "How have you been able to choose these wonderful things you're doing? Have you been very selective?" And I have to tell them, "I haven't been choosing what I'm doing." Things have been coming and I've been accepting virtually anything that's come.'
“Stockwell's ambition is so great that, for the first time in his life, he actively pursues aspects of his career that he once shunned- interviews, for example.
“'My entire motivation in life is my family,' he says. 'I don't need to get an award. I don't need recognition. I've had that already. What I need is to provide. The best way I can provide is to be successful, and the best way I can be successful is to take advantage of all the things at my disposal to achieve that, one of which certainly is press.'
“Take a look at the young Stockwell, specifically the version that emerges from old magazine and newspaper interviews, and you meet another person altogether.
“Robbed of a normal childhood, Stockwell had made 22 films by the time he was 15 -- including 'The Boy with Green Hair,' 'Kim,' 'Anchors Aweigh,' and the Oscar-winning 'Gentleman's Agreement.' Working nonstop, he had a privileged life that millions of children probably envied, but he loathed it nonetheless.
“The son of show-business parents -- his father, Harry Stockwell, was the voice of the Prince in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' and his mother, Betty Veronica, was a former stage dancer -- Stockwell made his professional debut at 7. It all happened by a fluke: when Stockwell accompanied his older brother, Guy, on a Broadway audition, the casting director took a liking to both boys, and cast each one. The play, aptly enough, was called 'Innocent Voyage,' and it led to an MGM contract for curly-haired Dean.
“From the beginning, the pressure on young Stockwell was intense. His parents had divorced when he was 6, and when his father defaulted on child-support payments, Dean reluctantly became the family provider. Over a six-year period, he averaged three to four films per year.
“At home, he says, 'There was a lot of friction... I was getting all the attention, but I hated it. [Guy] couldn't appreciate that, because he wasn't getting the attention. He had all these friends, his peer group, that he took for granted. I had none and I resented him for being able to live that way. I was fucking lonely.'
“When he was 13, chained to a seven-year contract, Stockwell was described by one magazine as 'a young rebel who despises acting and resents every moment it takes from his fleeting boyhood.' Many years later, Stockwell told columnist Hedda Hopper, 'Child actors exist in a sort of limbo between childhood and maturity and belong to neither. Adults take them too seriously and other children are either awed or hostile. A child actor can find friends in neither group.'
“Finally, Stockwell fled Hollywood when he was 16. He cut off his curly locks, started using his real name, Robert Stockwell, and for the next five years roamed the country, working menial jobs and disavowing his true identity. 'People that might have known me from seeing my films knew me as a young child,' he remembers. 'Now I was 17 and I wasn't that recognizable.'
“Around the time of his 21st birthday, Stockwell was pushing papers as mail boy to a Manhattan plumbing firm. 'Of all the jobs that I'd had in those intervening years,' he remembers. 'I think I hated that worse than anything. I came to the realization I had no training at anything. My primary education was very skimpy, very poor, and happened under the worst type of conditions. I was literally at the mercy of the world.'
“Most of Stockwell's childhood earnings were squandered by crooked accountants, he says, and he knew that the tiny sum being held in a trust wouldn't last forever. 'So I thought, "What am I gonna do? Well, let's go back and attack this [acting career] again, and see if I can do it a little more on my terms."'
“What followed for Stockwell was a brief but impressive 'second career.' He starred in the 1959 film 'Compulsion,' based on the Leopold-Loeb case of the '20s, and won a joint acting award with Orson Welles and Bradford Dillman at the Cannes Film Festival. He played the lead in the 1960 film of D. H. Lawrence's 'Sons and Lovers,' and in 1962 scored the plum role of Edmund Tyrone in Sidney Lumet's film version of 'Long Day's Journey Into Night,' holding his own alongside Katharine Hepburn, Ralph Richardson and Jason Robards.
“Stockwell was winning the best parts, but found his attention drifting elsewhere. What was happening, he says, were the first signs of the '60s youth revolution. 'It captured my imagination as much as anybody's. And it represented to me -- I can see this in retrospect -- something in childhood that I had missed: the freedom and loving being alive, without responsibilities and work and having to report to the studio every day, and deal with fans and interviews and shit that I hated when I was a kid.'
“So Stockwell called his agent, said, 'I'm not workin',' and dropped out once again. When he tried to come back three years later, though, 'I found it very difficult, 'cause I'd been out-of-sight, out-of-mind.' What followed was a long period of marginal employment: He found some TV work, took parts in low-budget trash ('The Dunwich Horror') and occasional oddities (Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie') and co-directed a film with musician Neil Young ('Human Highway') but often just didn't work at all. At one point, he went 18 months without a job.
“Today, along with his buddy Hopper, Stockwell is enjoying a major career renaissance. And with his starring role in 'Married to the Mob,' he says, he's never felt more confident.
“'I knew before I started the film that this character was going to work in spades,' he says, adding that Demme, as director, deserves credit for taking a risk with such offbeat casting. Instead of picking Peter Falk, Vincent Gardenia or another ethnically identified actor to play the Mafia don, he went with Stockwell (who is actually half-Italian on his mother's side).
“Demme's inspiration occurred on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, when he opened a copy of the Hollywood Reporter. Stockwell had just changed agents, and in order to announce the fact, had taken out a full-page ad. Demme saw the picture, and instantly recognized his Tony.
“Weirdly enough, Stockwell made another film immediately prior to 'Married to the Mob': a Canadian feature called 'Palais Royale,' due for an October release, in which he plays a character almost identical to Tony Russo.
“'It's very curious,' he says. 'For all my years I'd never had a role like this come my way, and here it was twice. The Mafia don in New York, the Mafia don in Toronto, both of them colorful and charming and also threatening. And I just thought, "What am I gonna do? It's the same character." So I decided to do the same character in both those movies.'
“To take the coincidence 'one nauseating step further,' Stockwell says he's also got a part in the recently completed 'Backtrack,' Hopper's next film. This time he plays a corrupt mob lawyer, dropping the Italian accent for a generalized East Coast sound.
“It would be difficult to find a film actor who's busier than Stockwell at this moment. And it would be difficult to find anyone whose job history better illustrates the vicissitudes, serendipities and insecurity of a Hollywood career.
“Looking back on his misfortunes -- at the career that he was forced to accept as a child, and the humiliation he felt when he couldn't maintain it as an adult -- Stockwell says he's not bitter. 'When you reach your maturity, I think it behooves you to accept the fact that it's absolutely futile and fruitless even to speculate on changing anything in your life. All you can do is get embittered. So I accept everything that's happened as part of my life, and try to push it in a positive direction from the moment right now.'”

Oh damn, there are so many. In general, I think the best movie openings set up the tone of the story to come and the cleverest ones subtly hint at the movie’s themes. Daniel Thomas MacInnes put it best:
While many movies treat a title and credit sequence as an afterthought, or perhaps a necessary distraction from the film, a good filmmaker knows how to integrate it into the film, so that it has a dramatic power. By placing a sequence of events on-screen while the credits roll, you are placing an emphasis on them. You are highlighting them, focusing attenion upon them. This can prove highly effective for the story you want to tell, and it's underlying themes.
Here are some openings from my favorite movies which I believe possess such dramatic power.
The Red Shoes
youtube
On one hand, this opening is very much of the old-style title sequence: a simple set of cards listing the major players in the production. However, the music and use of colored illustrations in these images set the tone for the movie to come so well, something beautiful and emotional. You get the sense that you’re being beckoned into a fairy tale world, much like the classic Disney films which begin with a live-action book opening, introducing the characters and their universe as illustrations. The Red Shoes toes the line between realism and fantasy, especially in its most famous ballet sequences, so this is such a perfect way to open the movie.
A Christmas Carol 1951
Tumblr media
Once again, this is nothing flashy, but the music is EVERYTHING, setting the tone well. We’re introduced to this version of the Dickens classic, not with some sweet jingle bell harmony, but with a loud, sinister brass section that sounds like it belongs in a horror movie. Then, just as suddenly, we hear “Hark the Herald, Angels Sing” in a jubilant register… and then right before the movie starts, the music jumps back to the malevolent motif. It’s such a great way of getting the audience in the right frame of mind, reminding us this is both a ghost story and a tale of Christmas redemption.
Blast of Silence
youtube
Blast of Silence opens with darkness, then the sound of the hero’s birth— his mother’s dying groans, his own weeping and screaming—over a train barreling through a tunnel. Accompanying this is the film’s (in)famous second-person narration, with the gravel-voiced, street-wise, and sardonic Lionel Stander illustrating the protagonist’s anger and cynicism right away (“You were born with the hate and anger built in!”). Then light breaks through and we realize the camera is on the front of a train just coming into the light. It’s a brilliant opening, setting up the story’s noir vibe and evoking a strange sense of determinism in how it suggests Frankie Bono’s tragic end was destined from the beginning of his life… much like a train on the tracks.
Wait Until Dark
Tumblr media
Both the pre-credits scene and the titles sequence are brilliant. The first image of the film is itself disconcerting: an expanse of red cloth, suddenly cut open with a knife before we even learn we’re looking at a doll—and already, the film is setting up its sense of imminent brutality, coupled with the dissonant dread evoked by Henry Mancini’s wonderful score and the editing itself. The interaction between Lisa and old Louis is also a subtle way of setting up the deceptive games the characters play out, with Louis wishing Lisa luck one minute, then calling up the psychopathic Roat to rat her out as she drives away with the intent on betraying her partners-in-crime. The airport scenes continue establishing the themes of dread, betrayal, and mystery, especially with Mancini’s creepy music making us aware Lisa’s drug trafficking enterprise will not end well, long before even she is aware of that.
Horus Prince of the Sun
Tumblr media
Best cold opening ever. Horus is a movie that deserves to be listed with the great, history-changing films of the late 1960s: it is every bit as rebellious as something like The Graduate, only it had a greater restriction to overcome: the idea that animation is all kids’ stuff destined to imprisonment within the Disney mold. Rather than opening with the titles or a cute storybook, Horus starts with a barren landscape. And then we see a boy running for his life from a pack of snarling wolves that are not anthropomorphized or made cute in any conceivable fashion. The opening consists largely of our hero Horus fighting these wolves in a violent, harsh fashion, telling the audience right away this won’t be your usual kiddie musical. No music accompanies the images at all, granting the sequence a sense of gritty realism one would expect from a crime drama of the period, not a fantasy film.
A Clockwork Orange
youtube
I have always found the opening titles of A Clockwork Orange so striking, even before we get to Alex staring us down in chilling close-up. The way the titles are just set against plain colors that alternate between the cuts—they suggest the flipping of switches on a machine or computer (foreshadowing Alex’s “cure” perhaps?). Wendy Carlos’s electronic score further establishes such a mental connection: the sound is inhuman and sinister, planting dread in your guttiwuts before Alex even appears. And when he does, is that not just one of the best introductions to a character ever? That smirk alone says so much—Alex is evil incarnate, but there’s a boyishness which makes it compelling.
The Castle of Cagliostro
Tumblr media
I’ve often gone over why I love this movie’s opening (I even made a post about the pre-credits sequence: https://nitrateglow.tumblr.com/post/184327179573/the-castle-of-cagliostro-scene-analysis-the), but I’ll say it again: the pre-credits scene sets up Cagliostro’s playful side, with Lupin and Jigen defying physics in Looney Tunes fashion as they rob a casino, and the titles sequence establishes the film’s more introspective, melancholy qualities, with a gentle love ballad accompanying the thieves’ journey to Cagliostro. I adore this movie so much because it balances all of these elements with elegance, putting real soul into what is essentially a fun caper adventure.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Tumblr media
Nausicaa’s cold opening reminds me a lot of Horus’s in that it throws the audience right into a desolate, dangerous world. Yupa finds a village where all the inhabitants have died from the polluted landscape, and the images are somber and despairing. We learn right away this is a world where death can take you at any moment and where human survival is becoming less likely. And yet, right after this scene, we cut to the credits, a series of tapestry images depicting a messiah rushing in a renewed world, accompanied by Joe Hisaishi’s gorgeous main theme, which can only be described as cautious, tragic optimism incarnate. Nausicaa is a movie which ultimately ends on such a note, though it does not shy away from despair and feelings of hopelessness, making it a rich emotional experience—and this is all forecasted from the film’s opening.

Chapter 183: Endgame, Pt 2
Cassidy Gold looked around at the destruction and helped around the debris and through the streets. He had been at the station looking for Weaver when this all started and had saved Harmony from being crushed by a piece of sheet rock that had fallen on her desk, as the entire station seemed to collapse around them. They had gotten out and saw the horror that was wrought before them. It felt like something out of a movie, but they were in the middle of it and it was very real. The ominous storm clouds swirled above and vines of all things were growing at an exponential rate. They sprouted from beneath them, cracking and destroying the roads and concrete. They were wrapping around buildings and structures, as well as the highways and bridges, destroying the city's infrastructure in a matter of moments. He could see the national guard trucks making their way into Seattle and military helicopters circling the city.
"The military...that's not good…" Cassidy mentioned.
"What do you mean?" Harmony asked.
"Haven't you ever seen a disaster or alien movie?" he questioned, but she still looked a bit lost.
"Whenever there's something going on like this that the government can't figure out how to contain, they decide to use nukes to deal with it," he replied. Her eyes widened in horror.
"You think they may send a nuclear warhead to Seattle?" she asked. He shrugged.
"If they can't figure out how to stop this, they might. And considering that we have no idea what the hell this is...I think we need to get out of this city," he mentioned.
"But how? The bridges are gone and boats are already leaving by the hundreds," she said.
"Then we see if we can smuggle ourselves out on one of those boats," he suggested.
"And how do you plan to get past the National Guard at the Marina?" she asked. He smirked.
"I have my ways. You in?" he asked. She bit her bottom lip. She barely knew him, but something told her that she needed to trust him and she nodded.
As they started toward the Marina though, there was a whooshing sound. She looked back, only to see a rainbow light washing over the entire city. It rushed through them both and everything came back to them like a ton of bricks. It didn't have any kind of affect on the normal people around them and only served to further confuse the residents of Seattle. But for them...it changed everything and returned that which had been lost to them.
"Tink…" Neal uttered and she smiled, as her eyes watered.
"Neal…" she squeaked, as they embraced in a tight hug, before their lips met passionately. As they parted, they looked in the opposite direction of the Marina and toward the storm clouds that loomed over the epicenter. And now that their memories were back, they knew that epicenter was where the battle raged.
"The curse is broken," she said.
"Yeah...but the battle isn't over. Let's go…" he said, as she opened hand and willed her wand back into her hand, shocking many around them. But they paid those people no mind.
"Magic is here…" she said, looking at him.
"We need to find my Dad, Henry, and the others," he replied, as they joined hands again and began running toward the battle.
~*~
Several moments earlier
The wind whipped violently around them, as the air was thick with magic. The resurrection amulet glowed green and an inky blackness leaked from it, spreading its poison into the Earth. This blackness would cause death to everything they knew and all sentient life and resurrect a new world in something akin to a twisted garden of Eden.
By now, the National Guard had moved in and had been screaming at them to evacuate the area, but their orders fell on deaf ears. They were armed though and Emma knew that could be dangerous to them too.
"Summer...I need a really big bubble around this area!" Emma called. Her brunette sister nodded and concentrated with her powers.
"Ma'am...you cannot go in there!" she heard a soldier holler at Eva, as she and Paul returned from treating the injured. However, her sister must have realized that it would do no good to keep treating the injured if they did not stop the source. Had the situation not been quite so serious, she would have laughed at her normally gentle and sweet sister shoving several big, burly men, armed with rifles to the side with her wind powers and pulling her confused and still clueless husband back into the fray.
Summer succeeded with encasing them and the area in a bubble, further infuriating and puzzling the city's police and the army.
"I'll hold it as long as I can!" Summer said, as she outstretched her arms and was obviously strained by maintaining such a massive bubble.
She saw that everyone was pretty much holding their own, but that's all they could do. Even Fandral and his family were struggling to fight off Gothel's monstrous fauna. Her father's counterpart guarded Rose, though she fought as well, from the vines, while their children fought like the well-trained Asgardians that they were.
"Hit her guys!" Emma ordered, as her powers slammed into Gothel. Leo, Elsa, and Eva joined her, but the inky blackness from the amulet only seemed to fuel her power and make her further impervious to their attacks.
"Dammit...why the hell can't we scratch her?" Leo wondered.
"It's that damn amulet," Emma growled, as they struggled against her, as she eyed her parents, who were fighting off the vines and vicious man-eating plants that would have long ago moved in on them without them. Her mother's arrows were very effective at burning the man-eating plants up and her father's blade was keeping the vines at bay.
"I've had enough of this bitch," Regina growled, as she was tiring from expelling so much magic. And she knew they all were, except Gold, perhaps.
"You know...you could help!" she called to Facilier.
"You can't want this! Whatever you wanted is moot now! Either Gothel dies or we die! There's no other way this ends now!" Regina called to him. He glanced at her and knew she was right. She saw him eye the chalice that glowed between Snow and Charming.
"You can't touch it! You can never properly wield it, don't you get that?! Going back won't turn out the way you think!" Regina added. Facilier's jaw clenched, but she saw relent in his eyes, as fire appeared in his hands and he began to fight with them, if only to help save his own skin. The smirk on Gothel's face was still prevalent though and she remained unscathed.
"It's time to end this," she announced.
"We definitely agree on that, plant bitch...but probably not in the same way," Regina quipped. Gold watched vines slither from her hands and opened his mouth to warn them. But it was too late. He, Regina, Belle, and Facilier were suddenly constricted by those vines and volts of electricity traveled through their bodies. They screamed at the excruciating pain and now were helpless in the battle.
"Don't let the vines touch you!" Gold called, as he tried to reach the dagger inside his jacket pocket, but the vines kept his arms glued to his side.
More vines sprouted from the witch, capturing Leo and Elsa next, rendering them captured as well. Snow grabbed Bobby and backed away from the vines to keep them away from him. Henry guarded Jacinda and Lucy too, as one wrapped around Emma next.
"Emma!" Snow and David cried, as she screamed in pain.
"Mom!" Henry called, as he was torn between protecting his family and running to his mother. Hook prodded a scared and struggling Alice toward Margot and Robin watched him run toward her.
"Killian no!" he cried, as the pirate rushed headlong into danger and sliced through the vine that held Emma. Unfortunately, that only served to see that a vine captured him and another replaced itself around Emma. Gothel laughed evilly and then met Snow's eyes, before looking at Summer.
"I think I'll squeeze the life out of this one. Just one tiny snap to her neck and there will be no dancing in her future," Gothel hissed. Snow cried out and saw her husband already running toward their daughter.
He sliced through the vine that was after her and lifted her up to carry her out of danger. Unfortunately, the unspeakable happened and Snow's blood curdling scream shook them all to their core, as the vine glowed and the inky blackness from the amulet paralyzed his movement. His eyes suddenly went completely black, as Snow rushed toward him, but it was too late. When his eyes returned to their normal blue, they were glassy and his red star gem hovered just outside his chest with a golden glow.
"He did exactly what I knew he would if I threatened one of the little ones. So predictable your Charming is…" she cackled, as the red star seed floated toward the amulet and joined the other four star seeds. The amulet glowed with destructive light and the clouds in the sky darkened. Lightning struck violently around the city, further destroying and compounding the chaos. But Snow couldn't see any of that, as she caught her husband's lifeless form, as he fell to the ground.
"No...no...no…" she cried uncontrollably.
"Don't you dare do this to me again, Charming...don't you dare!" she screamed, as she cradled him in her arms.
"Daddy!" Summer cried, as she knelt beside him.
"Dad!" Bobby cried too, as he tore away from Frankie and Joe, before crashing beside Summer.
"Don't worry...you're about to join him, Princess…" Gothel hissed, as she was suddenly hovering right above them. Henry and Joe pulled a sobbing Summer and Bobby away from their parents and the witch.
"Grams...look out!" Henry called to her, but Snow refused to let go of her husband and even if she had tried to run, it was too late. The blackness was upon her and she was already dying without the other half of her heart. She gasped and her eyes went black, before returning to their normal green, albeit now glassy.
"NOOO!" Emma and the twins cried, as they witnessed the murders of their parents before their eyes. Snow fell against her husband to the ground, as her white star gem hovered above her body with a silver glow. And perhaps even more shocking, the chalice cracked in half and broke apart, stunning them all.
"It's over…" Gold said brokenly.
"No...it can't be…" Belle answered, as Gothel raised her arms to the sky. The amulet poured with black energy and the sky opened up to a burning rain that would eradicate humanity in a matter of hours. Alice seemed to be in a trance, like she was hearing voices again.
"No...I won't let you do this! I'll stop you!" Alice cried, as her golden magic erupted from her fingertips and slammed into the amulet.
"NO!" Gothel cried, as she sent vines to stop her. With her attention on Alice, the vines around the others loosened. Hook grabbed his cutlass and rushed toward his daughter, slicing through any vines that crept near her. Fandral did the same, as he knew Alice was probably their only chance at survival now. Emma, Leo, Eva, and Elsa joined their magic with that of the guardian's and Gothel cried out in horror, as the resurrection amulet shattered into a million pieces. The six star gems were scattered, but Emma was focused on the red and white ones. She scrambled after them, as Gothel tried to get them, but the Savior kicked her away.
"Not today, Satan," she growled, as she retrieved her parents star gems and hurried toward where they lay. The gems hovered above their hosts and she watched hopefully, as they glowed and gently disappeared inside her parents again. But her brief smile faded, as they didn't move or awaken.
"What's going on?" Bobby asked, as he shook their mother and father.
"Why aren't they waking up, Emma?" Summer asked.
"I...I don't know. Come on Mom and Dad...wake up," she muttered, but as seconds passed with no movement, the situation seemed grim. Were they too late to revive them? ~*~
Snow and David stood in that familiar meadow, hand in hand, as they saw the crystal palace before them. He was dressed in his familiar red coat he had worn to awaken her from the sleeping curse and she wore a flowing white dress, with her long hair cascading down her back.
"Are we dead?" she asked, as they glanced at each other.
"I...I don't know. We lost…" he realized.
"Not yet," a male voice said. They turned to see Serenity and Endymion before them.
"What do you mean?" Snow asked.
"It's not too late...you need to speak to Alice. The Guardian can still save everyone," Serenity answered, as she motioned them to the crystal ball behind her. They approached and gently touched it, as they watched Gothel unleash horror on the world with a fully powered amulet.
"Alice...you can still stop this," David said.
"He's right sweetie...you can stop her," Snow agreed, hoping she would hear their pleas. And she did. They shared bright smiles, as they watched Alice and their children shatter the amulet.
"They did it…" Snow said, as tears filled her eyes.
"At least we know they'll be okay without us now," David replied, as he took her in his arms and they prepared to accept their fate. Snow's eyes teared, but she could accept this too, as long as she had him to hold her.
"You two aren't really that dead yet," Endymion said, with a note of amusement in his voice.
"What do you mean?" David asked. He smirked and motioned for them to see exactly what he was talking about. ~*~
"No...they can't be dead! You put their star seeds back in!" Leo cried, as Elsa hugged his arm, the sadness on her face palpable. Eva knelt beside them and tried to use her powers to heal them, but there were no physical wounds.
"Why aren't they waking up?!" Summer cried, as Regina hugged and cried with her. Realization dawned on Henry, as he received the answer from his now active author's pen.
"Because they need true love's kiss," he realized.
"But...how can they give each other true love's kiss when they're both down?" Emma asked.
"Mom...there's more than one kind of true love," he answered and her eyes widened this time, as she got what he meant.
"Is it really that simple?" she asked. He smiled at her.
"Isn't it always when it comes to Grams and Gramps? True love to them is as easy as breathing air," he replied. She smiled at her son and joined hands with Leo and Eva. Summer and Bobby joined them too, as they encircled their parents.
Emma kissed her father's forehead, while Bobby kissed their mother's at the same time. A wave of rainbow light erupted from their kisses and washed over them and the entire city, bringing light to the darkness. Realization dawned in Jacinda's eyes and she practically tackled Henry to the ground.
"Henry!" she cried, as their lips met. He smiled once their lips parted.
"Ella…" he uttered, as they hugged and then lifted Lucy into their arms.
"Eva!" Paul cried, as he rushed over to her. Tears streamed down her face, as he enveloped her in a fierce hug.
Snow and David both took a starved breath and their eyes opened, as they looked around, seeing their children gazing down at them, all crying. They sat up and hugged them all, as true love had reunited them all once again.
"If you think this is over...you're sadly mistaken," Gothel growled, as she continued to pour dark magic into the earth and her storm clouds still threatened to let poisonous rain fall on the earth.
"No...it's definitely not over until we're sweeping your ashes back into the Earth," David growled, as he and Snow stood up. Gothel smirked.
"Your Chalice is broken...do you really think you have the power to defeat me now?" she questioned.
"It may be broken, but it still has power. It's just time for it to take a new form," Snow responded, as they all watched the two broken halves glow and float into the air.
Gold and silver magic swirled around it and then them, as they watched the two halves become something new.
In Charming's hand appeared his sword, only it was now embellished by a golden light and the blade swirled with golden energy. In both of Snow's hands appeared twin gauntlets that were equipped to fire glowing silver arrows that she could control with a mere thought. But that was not all that was different. The power transformed their clothing into familiar battle ware. He now donned his familiar leather jerkin and leather pants, while Snow was now wearing her white warrior princess-esque outfit.
"You think some fancy new weapons are going to scare me?" Gothel asked smugly. Snow aimed her gauntlet and fired three glowing silver arrows at Gothel. They exploded around her in flames and Gothel cried out, as she was badly burned. When the smoke cleared, they could clearly see that she was singed. She looked at her scorched skin and singed hair.
"What have you done to me?!" she cried. Zelena snorted.
"Are you really fishing for sympathy? Even these two have their limits with all their goodie goodie nonsense," the redhead quipped.
"For once, we agree," David said, as he brandished his sword.
"We'll see if you feel that way after I filet one of your precious babies," Gothel growled, as she fired razor sharp leaves at Summer and Bobby. But David was quick, as he jumped in front of them and expertly parried each and every one with lightning precision. Snow fired three more arrows at her and she screamed in agony. Once the smoke cleared again, she glared at Snow.
"No one attacks my babies and comes out of it unscathed," Snow growled. Gothel was about to retort, when Charming called out to her.
"HEY!" he shouted, as he hurled his blade at her and it went through her side. She cried out in agony, as he stretched his hand out and recalled the sword. It answered his call and was pulled from her body. She held her side in horrified agony, as green blood seeped from the wound.
"Alice...help me…" she pleaded with her daughter.
"Help you? You tried to slaughter my family and the entire world," Alice protested, as Jade held her after a tearful reunion.
"I am your family," Gothel pleaded pathetically. But Alice shook her head and stepped up.
"No...you're a monster that will destroy everything I love if I don't stop you," Alice responded, as golden energy erupted from her fingertips and slammed into Gothel.
"No...NOOOO!" Gothel cried, as she felt herself slipping back.
"This is it guys...this ends now," Emma called, as her magic joined Alice's. Leo and Elsa joined her, as his lightning energy paralyzed her limbs and Elsa's froze her to the ground. Gothel screeched and struggled against their magic, but to no avail. She watched in horror, as Alice, her own daughter that she had cruelly abandoned and trapped in a Tower, delivered the final blow. Alice's Guardian magic slowly ate away at her and she could do nothing to stop it, as she was slowly turned to dust. Gothel's remains floated to the ground and her horrid plants were gone. Instead, light magic returned the garden to its former glory. Hyacinths and Snowdrops bloomed again, but as they looked around the city, the damage was done. Snow and David smiled at each other and as expected, their lips met in a passionate kiss.
"Henry!" Neal called, as he and Tink shoved their way toward them, only to be stopped by soldiers. But those army officers felt an invisible shove out of the way, as Rumple raised his hand, and the two rushed toward them.
"I'm okay, Dad," Henry promised, as his father hugged him fiercely. Neal sighed in relief and then hugged his father and Belle.
"I don't know who the hell you people are of what the hell all this is...but you're all under military arrest!" one called to them. By the insignia on this woman's uniform, it was clear that her rank was that of Major and she was in charge of this particular group of guard members.
"Hold on Major…" a voice called, as Angela and Nick made their way through the crowd of onlookers. They flashed their badges.
"This is an FBI matter," Angela claimed.
"No...Agent Martin, this is a matter of obvious National Security," the Major argued. Nick turned to them.
"We can hold them off for a few, but if she calls our superiors, we'll be ordered to step aside," he warned.
"Gold...is there any kind of spell we can use to erase this whole mess from their memories?" David asked. But he shook his head.
"There's no putting this back in the bottle. We can escape back to where we belong and likely never be able to leave Storybrooke again," Gold replied, as they looked over at the military forces that were mounting.
"The military has seen what we can all do now," he said gravely.
"Yeah...this is blowing up all over social media too. It's all over the world now," Neal added.
"And even if it wasn't...like I said, the military has seen our powers and they want it," Gold said. He could see it especially in this Major's eyes.
"Then we can at least fix the damage done by Gothel's near apocalypse," David said, as he looked at Snow. She nodded. They couldn't bring back anyone that had died in the attack, but repairing the city was at least possible.
"As a gesture of good will," she agreed.
"It won't help," Gold warned.
"Maybe not, but it's the right thing to do," David said.
"That's all well and fine, but even with all our magic...we're talking fixing the infrastructure of an entire city," Regina reminded.
"And we have four star seeds, each with a bit of remaining magic," David said, as he opened his palm, revealing an orange star gem and a green star gem; that of which had once belonged to the Dragon King and his Queen.
"They are gone and would want the last of their powers to be used for good," Snow added, as she opened her palm, revealing a silver star gem and a gold star gem; that of which had once belonged to Serenity and Endymion.
"Then you had better hurry," Gold urged. David willed the orange star gem to repair the damaged bridges and highways, while willing the green one to repair damaged buildings. Snow willed the gold one to destroy the storm system in the sky left behind by Gothel and clear skies were restored throughout the city. That left the silver gem and they exchanged a glance, knowing it was their way home and back to the future. David looked at her and they joined hands, as they willed the final star gem into the air. A shining vertical portal appeared before them and all the people from their land and those from Tiana's Kingdom began to file through the portal. By now, all the people that really didn't belong in Hyperion Heights had gathered with them.
"Stop immediately!" the Major ordered, as the soldiers aimed their guns at them. But Summer concealed them in another bubble, causing the bullets to bounce harmlessly off the shield. Snow and David made sure everyone got through, until it was down to their family. They saw Joe and Frankie hugging Summer fiercely and they exchanged a glance, before walking toward them.
"Come with us," David requested of them. The two men exchanged a glance.
"David told me that they won't let you adopt here...but the same wouldn't be true where we're from. It would be new beginning for you both and the chance at having the children you want...and the family," Snow added, indicating them. Joe and Frankie smiled at each other.
"We were hoping you'd ask," they agreed. Summer smiled and practically pulled both of them through the portal.
"Taking in more strays...I shouldn't be surprised," Regina quipped slyly, as she, Robin, and Roland followed Chad and Zelena through the portal. Zelena's fiance was still trying to wrap his mind around everything, but he loved Zelena and vowed that nothing could scare him away.
"Hop on kid," Leo said, as he swept Bobby onto his back. Elsa took his free hand and they stepped through together. Jacinda, Henry, and Lucy followed, along with Paul and Eva, until only Snow, Charming, Hook, Emma, and Alice remained. They looked back at the National Guard and other police forces trying to get through the shield.
"So the world knows…" Emma mentioned. They nodded.
"But that's okay. This is their world and ours awaits us. We're going home," David said, as Hook, Emma and Alice walked through. And finally Snow and Charming followed through, as the bubble dissipated and the portal closed...

Tune in every Thursday folks, for the next excerpt of Hi Jax & Hi Jinx! A costume drama DD Autobiography to be published by Feral House fall 2018 thanks @AdamParfrey @DameDarcy ___________________________ MOVIES Act 1 Just a little back story of my experiences contacting the directors I loved, (or on second thought, was this a gentle form of stalking them?) Costume dramas? Hell yes to a delicious brocade delight. Then next in order of love, surrealist and I guess horror then art movies. Like Eraserhead, The Forbidden Zone by Richard Elfman, Superstar by Todd Haynes, and Careful by Guy Madden were all huge influences on me while I was in Art school as a film major, and after. I had the good fortune to meet all of these directors. I love Matthew Barney’s movies, particulary the Cremaster Cycle, and met him Once Upon a Time at his art studio in the Meat Packing District He revealed to me he is also from Idaho and was a fashion model, and afterwards we partied. I like silent films. Pandora’s Box, Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, and Metropolis being good examples. Barry Lyndon by Kubrick and anything by Kubrick. Anything by Werner Herzog, anything by Wes Anderson, but particularly of course The Life Aquatic. I know I will meet Wes one day. Anything by Terry Gilliam, Brazil being the best. Michel Gondry does good contempory work, Spike Jonze has right on social commentary. The movies, Spider Baby, and Daisies are like my life with Lisa “Suckdog” Carver. And Skidoo is the best role Carol Channing ever played, and wins for best cast, having Groucho Marx as God, Donyale Luna, Mickey Roonie, Frankie Avalon, Slim Pickins , Jackie Gleason and many more. I love those really Da Da Betty Boop cartoons from the 20's that cab Callaway sings on, the 30's being the 20's dark and sad twin. The best time in the world was 1927. Marie Antoinette movie by Girly Copula looks great but is less filling on plotline. Isabelle Doll loves it though. She doesn't care about stuff like intellectual content, she's just a Rococo fetishist. Another movie Isabelle loves is Interview With A Vampire, which she thinks is a romantic comedy. Isabelle is also never going to die and sleeps in a little pink coffin too, so finally she saw something in her reality portrayed in a movie, plus pushing all the other dolls around. She thinks it’s funny that the little girl Dunst character uses a pile of dolls as a fridge in which to keep her dead nanny for a snack. Five Stars in doll land: Whatever happened to Baby Jane. And Night Of The Hunter, where Lillian Gish plays an old Christian lady battling a demented preacher with a shotgun while she sings a hymn in Harmony with him. I now realize this is an analogy to life in the South. Isabelle thinks the dolls are the stars of these movies, that’s why she loves them, and the sad little song the little girl, Pearl, sings in the boat. Isabelle also loves Death Becomes Her because the ladies in that movie become dolls. Also, because Isabelle Doll is a flapper from the 20’s she likes the Isabella Rossellini character playing the hottest 20's flapper that lives eternally and has hundreds of hot male sex slaves. Wow! Back to what I like: Beauty and The Beast, by Jean Cocteau. It has a scene where Beauty glides ethereally down the corridor, the wall sconces made of men’s arms holding candles move to light her way. So sexy, and Sooooo good! Brother Sun Sister Moon about St. Francis Assi, and speaking of churchy stuff... The Devils By Ken Russell 1971 An account of the apparent demoniacal possession of the 17th-century nuns of Louden, climaxing in the burning of their priest as a sorcerer. There is the cutest cabaret scene in it where a gorgeous boy plays the Venus Di Milo. More movie hits, picked because they are dreamlike twisted fairytale moving paintings: The Fall, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Come Along Do, Breathless, Holy Motors, The Holy Mountain, Citizen Kane, The Maltese Fountain, anything by the Coen Brothers, and anything by the Brothers Quay. Surreal plotlines of Being John Malkovitch, Last Year at Marionbad, Mulholand Drive, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, A Ghost Story, It Follows, Rubber, Funky Forrest, and Back To The Future. The crazy jewel tones and harsh lighting contrasts of Hammer Horror Movies, and The Cook The Theif His Wife and Her Lover. The stunning visuals and general atmosphere of A Pigeon Sat on A Branch Reflecting on Existence, Russian Ark, The City Of Lost Children, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Enter The Void. The social commentary of Where The Green Ants Dream, Bubble,The Bicycle Thief, There Will Be Blood, and The Dark Backward plus all animations by Steve Cutts, who I truly love with a passion (like I wanna marry him, sight unseen, or maybe my brain just wants to marry his brain). The campy and poignient portrayals of artists about art, in Pink Flamingos, Big Eyes, Loving Vincent, Blow Up, Black Swan, The Mirror, The Dving Bell and The Butterfly, Waking Life, The Five Obstructions, My Best Fiend and Minute Movies by The Residents. The Nautical themed and true examples of what it’s like to dream and astral project to another world of Master and Commander, Cloud Atlas and Time Bandits. And the way Sunset Boulevard, Gummo, and Slumdog Millionaire show a reality specific to the portrayer. And of course all the stuff I saw in Larry Jordan’s animation class and dollar Matanee at The Red Vic on Haight Street while in art school in San Francisco. Still classic favorites : A Colour Box, La Jetee, Un Chein Andalou, Meshes Of The Afternoon, Anemic Cinema, Ballet Mechanique, Man With The Movie Camera, Flicker, Blue, Back and Forth, The Life and Death of a Hollywood Extra, Surface Tension, Chelsa Girl, and Dog Star Man about a man trying to climb a mountain with his dog in this scratch emulsion found footage mess madness that is one of the most deeply original movies of all time.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: April 2021
https://ift.tt/3l7ar2q
And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Another notable Amazon original this month (with no release date set) is Frank of Ireland. This comedy is a joint venture with Channel 4 and stars two of the Gleeson boys – Brian and Domhnall. I’m sure they’ll make father Brendan proud. The Amazon Original film Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse closes out the month with some Michael B. Jordan action on April 30.
April 1 sees the arrival of some sci-fi goodness, including Inception and Minority Report. Another sci-fi hit arrives later in the month with Arrival dropping on April 28.
Here is everything coming to Amazon Prime in April 2021.

Live Ledge #406: Best Albums of 2019
This was another great year in music. So great, in fact, that many hours were spent narrowing down the year's release into the standard Ledge format of the 40 best albums of the year. In particular, it was a year that really saw a resurgence in anthemic power pop. It was also a year that saw a number of psych-rock bands so widely expand their sound and songwriting that a two-record set was necessary. Here's my list, and look for another similar post featuring the great reissue and box sets of the year.
1. Mikal Cronin, Seeker. Every year there is a record or two that deserves to find an audience outside of its typical subgenre. This year it’s the latest by Mikal Cronin, a stunning record that retains the psych-rock template of his past yet showcases a giant leap in songwriting. This record should be all over mainstream rock radio.
2. Bob Mould, Sunshine Rock. After a handful of records featuring dark, ferocious rock closer to his Husker Du days than his more poppy records with Sugar, Mould’s latest finds him possibly as close to happy as we’ve ever seen him. Ok, maybe happy is too strong of a word. Whatever it is the attitude is different, although still accompanied by his trademark buzzsaw guitars.
3. Pernice Brothers, Spread the Feeling. The most welcome comeback of the year. Every band featuring Joe Pernice seemed to acknowledge one major influence missing from most Americana bands and that’s his love of ‘80’s college rock. Just imagine a country-tinged power pop band that clearly loves Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, and Lloyd Cole.
4. The Muffs, No Holiday. Such a tragedy. Two years ago, Muffs leader Kim Shattuck suddenly found herself unable to grip a guitar. It turned out to be ALS. Determined to finish one last album she gave all she could even as she quickly deteriorated from the disease. Eventually she was leading recording sessions while connected to a breathing tube. Sadly, she died less than two weeks before the release of one of the band’s best albums.
5. Purple Mountains, Purple Mountains. Purple Mountains was David Berman’s first project since the demise of Silver Jews in 2019, and it was a stunning display of his quirky songwriting skills. Unfortunately, the personal demons that had always been present in his art turned his big comeback into a tragedy, as he took his life just weeks after the record was released to glowing reviews.
6. The Resonars, No Exit. In a year that saw power pop rediscover its balls, The Resonars proved they always had their share of testicular fortitude. And it’s all the work of one man, Matt Rendon, who has over the last two decades created six albums of this sort of catchy but raucous power pop.
7. Kiwi Jr., Football Money. Power pop’s closest relative just has to be jangle pop, and both genres are at its best when the songwriting is as catchy as a late ‘70’s Nick Lowe single. There’s hooks galore on this Toronto band’s debut release.
8. Wand, Laughing Matter. There’s always been a bit of a fine line between psych and prog, and those lines have definitely narrowed in today’s crop of prog-rockers. One proof is the return of the double album, which every psych band seemed to release in 2019. The strongest record of that sort may have to be Wand’s fifth record, which succeeds by actually stripping back their sound a bit.
9. Wreckless Eric, Transience. It’s been a real treat to see the resurgence of Eric Goulden in the last few years, as album after album have ranked as his best ever. The latest sort of comes closest to his solo performances, as he lays tracks and tracks of both clean and enhanced acoustic and electric guitars over backing tracks laid down by Amy Rigby, Cheap Trick’s Tom Petersson, jazz horn player Artie Barbato, and The Rumour’s Steve Goulding.
10. Tim Presley’s White Fence, I Have To Feed Larry’s Hawk. Presley reportedly spent four years recording what may be the masterpiece of his career. How to describe the finished product is not easy, though, as various influences and sounds flow in and out of each and every track, yet there is an intimacy here that makes it feel like Presley just whipped up this musical cocktail in one long, intense evening.
11. The Cowboys, The Bottom Of A Rotten Flower. Good old punk-influenced straight up rock and roll. Nothing more, nothing less. And when it’s as good and as catchy as this it doesn’t need to be anything else.
12. Twin Peaks, Lookout Low. Five years ago, this Chicago-based band’s fabulous record Wild Onion was described by one of the band members as heavily influenced by Exile On Main Street. This record’s classic rock influence appears to be the first two records by The Band. That’s not to say they sound anything like either the Stones or The Band. No, in this case there is a laid back feel to their guitar-based indie rock that feels as if it’s straight out of a Woodstock basement.
13. The Dates, Ask Again Later. Garrett Goddard has been a member of a number of bands over the years, including King Tuff, Personal and the Pizzas, and The Cuts. His first record heading The Dates may have just topped anything else he’s ever worked on in the past. The melodies and hooks just melt in your ears, and the musical accompaniment throws The Byrds, Big Star, Shoes, Smithereens and seemingly a dozen other bands into the greatest blender ever invented.
14. Wilco, Ode To Joy. After Tweedy’s pair of solo acoustic records, I think I was ready for a full blown rock and roll Wilco album. It has been a while, right? Unfortunately, Ode To Joy comes off as a full band version of those solo records. Don’t get me wrong. It’s good. It’s very good. It just wasn’t what I needed from a 2019 Wilco album.
15. Guided By Voices, Zeppelin Over China. Another year, another trio of Guided By Voices records. Their second wind as a band has been nothing but stunning, as evidenced by this double album of almost nothing but anthems.
16. Tijuana Panthers, Carpet Denim. Every year there seems to be a new band that showcases elements of surf rock in their punk-influenced lo-fi garage sounds. What a shocker to find out that this is their sixth album! What sets them apart from others like them, besides the strength of their songwriting, is the ocassional elements of doo wop harmonies. Who knew that The Buzzcocks and Dion could co-exist in the same song?
17. Peter Perrett, Humanworld. After no new tunes for over 25 years, we now have two records in three years by the former leader of The Only Ones! Like 2017’s How The West Was One this record succeeds simply because Perrett isn’t trying to recreate the glory days, nor is he attempting to jump on current trends. Instead he accomplishes what real artists do, which is to create a sound that fits the song.
18. Frankie and the Witch Fingers, ZAM. Another great psych rock double album that incorporates and combines all sorts of atypical influences, including kraut, prog, and even a little funk.
19. Sweet Things, In Borrowed Shoes, On Borrowed Time. It may be hard to find a more varied rock and roll album than this debut record, as it jumps around from blues to soul to country to glam rock. There’s cameos by Alejandro Escovedo and members of The Uptown Horns. It’s the most ambitious trashy garage rock record I’ve heard in quite some time.
20. Cherry Pickles, Will Harden Your Nipples. As their bandcamp states, “one guitar, two drums, the basement band you always wanted to start”. This trio proudly combines all sorts of “outsider art” into a minimalistic sound that would certainly impress the namesake of the record’s best song “I Still Miss Lux”.
21. Ty Segall, First Taste. The prolific singer/guitarist was a bit quiet this year, actually. Well, for Segall a quiet year is one that only features a studio album, a live album, and a box set of outtakes. What makes his only new record of the year stand out is that there reportedly is not a guitar to be found on it! No, it’s not a synth-pop record. In fact, it ultimately isn’t that much different than what we’re used to hearing.
22. Pale Lips, After Dark. Gotta love snotty, hook-driven garage-punk that’s clearly inspired by major doses of The Muffs and The Ramones mixed with spoonfuls of surf and Spector-era girl groups.
23. The Darts, I Like You But Not Like That. This record was not what I expected. At all. Who would have predicted that Alternative Tentacles would put out such a sexy collection of horror-punk?
24. CTMF, Last Punk Standing. Nobody has so proudly hosted the flag of ‘60’s garage-punk as Wild Billy Childish. Well, “proud” is probably not the correct word to use, as Childish is as cantankerous as The Fall’s Mark E. Smith. Yet he consistently puts out records full of simple yet catchy guitar anthems, and this one is no exception.
25. Jordan Jones, Jordan Jones. What happens when you take the pop/rock highlights of ‘70’s AM radio and ramp it up a bit with power pop energy? You get this wonderful debut record.
26. The Mystery Lights, Too Much Tension! A melting pot of different styles rarely mesh well, but this New York band’s second album somehow manages to roll in and out of genres. A synth track leads into a homage to the Stooges which is then followed by a ‘60’ dance party. How do they get away with it?
27. Juliana Hatfield, Weird. It’s only fitting that an album dominated by a theme of being a lonely introvert would be created by one artist playing almost every instrument. That’s the case of the latest Hatfield collection of originals, and it’s one of the best of her career.
28. Kevin Morby, Oh My God. Rolling Stone recently described the Kansas City native as a “secular guy with a spiritual side”, and that’s never been more evident than on his fifth album. RS goes on to compare this record to Dylan’s gospel years but it’s actually more similar to a record like New Morning, where Biblical imagery is referenced but not necessarily the main topic.
29. Drahla, Useless Coordinates. Post-punk also made a comeback this year, and one of the best purveyors of that sound is this trio of Wire fanatics. And like Wire there’s a bit of a ferocity in this record that’s missing in much of their post-punk cohorts.
30. Gino and the Goons, Do The Get Around. Take Chuck Berry, The Sonics, Motorhead, The Ramones, The Stooges and a few other “rawk’ legends and toss them into a blender and you get the dirty sound that Gino and the Goons have mastered over the course of five records. You know what you’re getting from these guys, but they always deliver.
31. Young Guv, Guv I & II. The side project of Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook could be described as a lo-fi tribute to bands such as Big Star and Teenage Fanclub. But then out of the blue comes a synth tune that’s almost danceable. It’s just part of the charm of this double record.
32. Ravi Shavi, Blackout Deluxe. Some records are sleepers. They don’t work the first time you hear them. They may not even work on the fourth or fifth airing. Then suddenly you can’t stop listening. That’s the case with this new wave-influenced, Prince-obsessed, garage rock group.
33. ATOM, In Every Dream Home. Just like the previous record, ATOM didn’t work for me at first. Then suddenly I had to race to the stereo to crank up the volume. What changed? Well,it helps when the musicians are Australian indie rock heavy weights led by Crime and the City Solution’s Harry Howard.
34. Geoff Palmer, Pulling Out All The Stops/Brad Marino, Extra Credit. (Tie) I can’t possibly vote for one of these records to be higher than the other. The pair both were members of the The Connection and The New Trocaderos. Both of them are veteran power pop performers who have written more than their share of catchy tunes. And both may have put out the records of their careers.
36. Honey Radar, Ruby Puff Of Dust.. A lot of reviews of this Philly band compare them to Guided By Voices, but I honestly don’t understand why. Yet it’s what made me check them out, and I do appreciate their fuzzy psych-rock sound.
37. Titus Andronicus, An Obelisk. Produced by Bob Mould and recorded at Steve Albini’s Chicago studio, Titus’ sixth album is their most straight ahead to date, although as always leader Patrick Stickles’ lyrics are open to interpretation.
38. The Dream Syndicate, These Times. While most band reunions never result in worthwhile albums (or any new music at all), there are instances where the second run rivals the first. That’s the case with these leaders of the mid-’80’s “Paisley Underground”, and it’s mainly because they refuse to just rest on their laurels.
39. Jesse Malin, Sunset Kids. The teaming of Malin with Lucinda Williams may seem like a head scratcher, but it actually works! Not only does Williams produce the album, she duets with him on a handful of the album’s tracks. The end results may be quieter than a typical Malin album but the tunes are also as strong as a typical Malin album.
40. More Kicks, More Kicks. Haven’t I said that this was a year for great power pop? Here’s another one. This time it’s a UK group, and like the others I’ve highlighted there’s nothing wimpy here. It’s pop music that absolutely rocks.
After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! You can find this show at almost any podcast site, including iTunes and Stitcher...or

Note: Tracks from the albums listed above were presented in reverse "Casey Kasem countdown" order. In two instances (Darts/Pale Lips and The Muffs/Purple Mountains), songs were erroneously flipped in error. I apologize for this mistake.

Note
jordie recommend me some musicals pls and ty
you came to the right person!!!
rent- i feel like most people already know this one but, just in case, it takes place in the early ‘90s in new york city during the aids epidemic. it’s an amazing story that captures the life of a group of friends over the course of a year. this is a really low key description bc, for me to describe rent, it will take like. ten separate posts. listen to this if you haven’t. tw for death. (full soundtrack here)
les mis- everyone is french and angry. beautiful music. this blog was all abt les mis when i was in 9th grade. tw for death. (10th anniversary soundtrack here)
bare- one of my favorite musicals ever. first off, the soundtrack is great bc great music but also bc there is little to no dialogue cut. really sad tho. i tell people that this musical is if romeo and juliet was based around two gay boys in a catholic high school. so it does not have a happy ending. tw for external and internalized homophobia, and suicide. also, only listen to the pop opera. not the musical. yes there is a difference, and the pop opera is 1000x better. (full soundtrack here)
a gentleman’s guide to love and murder- okay this musical is actually like. really high up there with my favorite musicals. it was on broadway for two? three? idk? years and i saw it and it’s so good. it’s really funny, too. and the music and harmonies is so good. just trust me and listen to this one. tw for murder but it’s like. funny murder okay this musical is a comedy i swear. (full soundtrack here)
fun home- oh my god if you want to talk abt a musical that i cried over, it’s this one. this one follows the life of alison bechdel and her going over her life, talking abt how she came to discover her sexuality, and how it affected her father. again, really lame description bc it would require like ten years for me to talk abt this and cry abt it. beautiful, true story. beautiful music. when i saw this, i was sobbing and so was like the 60 y/o man sitting next to my mom. tw for homophobia and suicide. (full soundtrack here)
be more chill- i actually just started listening to this. i found out it was never actually on broadway/off-broadway. i think we talked abt this musical??? listen to it. it’s good and fun and gives me a heathers/mean girls/little shop of horrors vibe. (full soundtrack here)
spring awakening- tbh i was a little hesitant putting this one on here bc it’s been so long since i’ve seen it. it also has beautiful music so i couldn’t resist. i would ask someone who knows more abt this musical to explain it, tho. tw for suicide, death, and sex (okay most of these musicals mention sex but this one has like, bdsm tendencies). (full soundtrack here)
the last five years- oh my god i cannot believe i almost forgot this one. this musical is told through the eyes of cathy and jaime. cathy’s story begins at the end and recounts the events that happen. jaime’s begins at the start and lets the events fold out. i love the music to this so much. also the story is really interesting since, i believe it was the writers, said that cathy and jaime’s relationship was doomed from the start. (full soundtrack here)
jersey boys- hey frankie valli and the four seasons. this musical has such fun music, i had to recommend it. (full soundtrack here)
tbh i could probably go through so many more, but these are the ones that first popped into my head.  if you couldn’t tell, i really love musicals.

recommended digital releases, october 19th
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
body type "body type ep" on partisan [spotify, bandcamp] body type's debut ep arrives two years after their coveted debut 7" single (someone please hook me up) with catchy indie rock, gauzy guitars, and some post-punk vibes. it jangles a little like the most recent eternal summers album.
charalambides "charalambides- tom and christina carter" on drawing room [spotify, bandcamp] tom and christina carter's latest release was improvised live in the studio and it's six long songs- four about ten minutes long with the other two stretching to a side-long twenty minutes. it's slow-moving, quiet psych guitar with christina's vocals sometimes cooing and other times howling for a sound that reminds me of jandek live shows or a sonic youth side project.
neneh cherry "broken politics" on smalltown supersound [spotify, bandcamp] neneh cherry is back with her sixth album and it's again produced by kieran hebden of four tet. the last album had a ton of slow, bass heavy numbers and that formula is expanded considerably with songs exploring dancehall, jazz and ambient. i fear focusing on the production misses the awesomeness of cherry's poetry and voice which are always sultry yet sharp.
the moles "code word" on super secret [spotify, bandcamp] australian ex-pat richard davies has lived in the u.s. for twentysome years now and recorded with a variety of musicians including richard davies (as cardinal) and robert pollard (as cosmos). he returned to the moles name a few years ago and this is the second lengthy album since their return. i'm hearing more robyn hitchcock on this album with maybe a little more of a pop jangle.
will oldham "songs of love and horror" on drag city [spotify, bandcamp] will oldham drops the bonnie 'prince' billy moniker (temporarily?) for his new album to accompany a lyric book of the same name. since it's an anthology, it's all old songs but all new recordings and arrangements (so yes "i see a darkness" and "new partner" are here for the umpteenth time). the arrangements are all solo acoustic guitar and voice, which i don't think he's done before when revisiting his work.
slightly older stuff:
ancient shapes "silent rave" on you've changed [spotify, bandcamp] daniel romano is back with the second album from his ancient shapes project that boil any excess water (or verses) from his pop songs until they're two minute stompers. when the first album was released it took about eight months to reach digital services... this one took eighteen from its initial tour cassette release in february 2017! ps- new daniel romano album next month too!
black eagle child "six lugubrious airs" (self-released) [spotify, bandcamp] instrumental psych pop from michael janz's project that's been dormant for too long. they kinda sound like they could be yo la tengo instrumentals.
full blast "rio" on trost [spotify, bandcamp] peter brötzmann's trio with marino pliakas (bass) and michael wertmüller (drums) drop a live album recorded two years ago in rio. don't let the free jazz swing of the opening track fool you- very quickly the second track will pummel you only to be followed by the stampede of the third.
ghost thoughts "no chill" on jigsaw [spotify, bandcamp] the second release from ghost thoughts is more excellent bedroom indie pop that frankie cosmos and free cake for every creature fans will certainly dig. it also makes me think of wolf colonel or a twee version of chastity belt.
low "double negative" on subpop [spotify, bandcamp] low uses the studio and production wizardry as a fourth member on their latest album, distorting and warping their melodies and harmonies to the point that you wonder if something is wrong with your speaker or headphones. probably the most experimental they've been since "drums and guns" back in 2007.
