I do agree that the prison visit scenes with Robert were some of Oliver's best work as John.

The man finally showed a different facial expression after all! Haha. This is big news!

But no, Robert being part of this story does so much for John. It gives him a proper foil that he's not trying to win round. We can actually see some of who he really is come through as Robert gets under his skin and that really has been missing from this story.

Sure we got the reveal of what John has been up to but other than some brief stuff with Mack who he keeps having to win round to please Aaron, we really haven't seen much of "the real John". Technically we sort of did with Aiden, but Robert is a lot more interesting of an opponent than a half comatose man in a hospital bed.

So it was nice to see he and Robert get to spar a little. The Harry stuff with Robert was heartbreaking. Although I don't know in what show Aaron hates football...writer clearly missed the whole football story in 2019 but okay. Haha. But I digress. The way John was reveling in getting to be an uncle to Harry since Robert wasn't around was good stuff.

I also enjoyed Robert suddenly becoming Andy's biggest fan. The fact that he can use Jack taking in Andy to score points against John is honestly hilarious, since it obviously caused him so much distress growing up. But they brought up John stealing Robert's life again and they brought up Robert being raised by Jack and John being unwanted and both of those things clearly got to John and I just need that to mean something. I need them to have just been waiting for Robert to show up to get to that part of John's backstory because frankly if they don't go there and use that, then it's just a massive missed opportunity.

I also very much enjoyed John's little "what?!" when Robert said "who he gets off with". That was a great little shift in that conversation. I loved it.

But also...when did he think it happened?!? Haha. Unless they were just like making out across a prison visiting table, it literally could have only happened on their wedding day.

But Robert getting to hum the wedding march and chuckle to himself about Aaron being a good kisser was worth it.

I love seeing this side of Robert even if it's obviously his mask, covering up all his pain. But bring it on, take him down Robert!

I love the idea that Robert is biding his time, healing, building connections, etc, all the while slowly figuring out John. The best part about this is how much this is going to unravel John and make him spiral.

Yeah, he doesn’t want Aaron to go back to Robert because he’s a control freak, but beyond that, I think watching Robert Sugden, a man who is known for being an absolute bastard, who just got out of prison, slowly making a place for himself in the village again, is what’s going to drive John insane and push him over the ledge

Once he sees how Robert can charm people, how effortless it is, it’s going to drive him crazy(ier). Robert has a job, Vic is actively supporting him, he’s starting to make friends, and this is only a couple of weeks out of prison. Soon enough, he’ll be Harry’s favorite uncle, more people will start to trust him, and even Aaron will start to warm up to him, empathize with him, and that’s going to send John flying

The best part about this? Half of it isn’t even going to be purposeful on Robert’s end. Yeah, he’ll do and say some things that’ll wind John up, but most of this is going to be him trying to get his Shit Together™️ and John not being able to handle that

John’s gonna come face to face with reality, that even at his lowest, his rock bottom, Robert is ten times the man John will ever be 😌
