February is also National Embroidery Month, and we’re excited to show you some cool items we have in the Special Collections. The first one is a hand-embroidered canvas book made by Candace Hicks who collects coincidences from the books she reads and gathers them in her artists’ books and installations.
Hicks created a variant series of hand-embroidered books, copying the form and design of dime-store "composition" books. In this volume, Hicks kept a record of coincidences in the books she was reading and noted every time the word “coincidence” occurred.
Common threads : Volume 28 Hicks, Candace [Austin, Tex. : C. Hicks,] 2011. English HOLLIS number: 990128839780203941

Archive of 9 Cuban Newspapers Reporting on Fidel Castro’s Death
La Habana, 2016
Fidel Castro’s death at 90 rocked the island which he had thrust onto the world stage. One of the newspapers, Granma, is named after the yacht that carried Fidel Castro to Cuban shores in 1956 to launch the Cuban Revolution. Castro remained in power for decades and defied 11 American presidents. The newspapers provide a snapshot into the political climate surrounding Castro’s death as well as detailed accounts and images of how his supporters in Havana mourned their beloved leader. The state-run publications tout the leader’s merits and successes throughout his time as commander in chief of the Caribbean island.

I had an amazing visit with family in Boston this weekend. I also got a chance to visit Harvard. Here's a shot coming out of one of the libraries. I was too chicken to take a pic of the Gutenberg Bible, but did get to see it. . . . . #library #harvardlibrary #booksonvacation #readersofinsta #bibliophile

June is National Pollinator Month, brining attention to the importance of relationship between pollinators and plants, and our dependency on plants for oxygen and as primary food source.
This engraving was created by the artist Paul Revere in 1774. Revere was a silversmith, engraving artist, and prosperous Bostonian who was also a military officer and industrialist. He became famous for his role in a midnight ride in 1775 to alert nearby minutemen of the approach of British troops at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War in Massachusetts.

This image is part of FAL’s Digital and Slides Collection (DISC), a collection of images digitized from secondary sources for use in teaching and learning. FAL does not own the original artworks represented in this collection, but you can find more information at HOLLIS Images.

Peronism, Children’s Literature and Political Propaganda

Privilegiados : libro de lectura inicial
Las hadas buenas : libro de lectura para primer grado inferior
Niños felices : libro de lectura para primer grado superior
El hada buena : libro de lectura para segundo grado
Buenos Aires: 1953-1955
Following the emblematic motto “the only privileged people are the children,” constantly repeated by Perón and Evita, a number of methods were developed to indoctrinate children in the ideology of the Peronist movement. One of these methods was the publication of school textbooks that offered children a simplified and didactic version of the government’s program and tenets of “national doctrine.”
From a graphic point of view, these manuals are excellent examples of what could be termed “Peronist aesthetic,” in which the omnipresent images of Evita and Perón were displayed throughout the texts.

Tall, Cool, Refreshing, Beveridge
Since you can’t enjoy a beverage in the Reading Room, how about a Beveridge? No ice, but if you are into English bishops you may find them cool!
Enjoy the long weekend, tumblr friends!

The tintype was an early photographic process that produces a direct positive image on a thin sheet of lacquered iron (not tin). These are unique images produced without the need for a negative. Tintypes were extremely popular from the 1850s through the early 1910s.
