Code, share and even hire: What happens at tech community events
At a recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) community event in Pune, about 600 participants lined up to learn how developers solved critical challenges, such as reducing storage costs on the cloud and faster ways to shift applications from an on-premise server to the cloud.
Events like these are rapidly gaining in popularity across the tech community, as people become more active in sharing knowledge.
There is, however, more than just knowledge sharing taking place at these large scale gatherings.
In the last few years, tech communities have turned into a hunting ground for companies looking to recruit people with niche skills, as well as an opportunity for job seekers.
While offers are rarely made at the event itself, both sides find it easier to scope out available options.
Companies have a better chance of finding the right talent at these events since they are often targeted at a particular tech community, says Prashanth HN, chief technology officer of WheelsBox, an upcoming startup in the automobiles space.
Prashanth, an AWS Community Hero, has been actively involved in participating and organising AWS community events, where companies typically set up booths with games or problems for people to solve and start a conversation.
“One of the reasons sponsors come on board is their hiring drives. People will go to the booth and they start the conversation with the right set of people. Finding the right talent is hard and this is a good platform targeted at the right audience…,” he says.
AWS has over 30,000 members in its user groups across 15 cities. It also runs a Heroes program where influential people within the community are given additional access to amplify their reach and build their personal brand. All its community events are organised and run by volunteers, but the funding comes mostly through sponsorships, with ticket sales also contributing.
Last year, AWS held four community day events, and is targeting over a dozen in 2020. Apart from an annual community day in different cities, there are also regular smaller-scale meetups.
“In the last three years, AWS communities have grown into something substantially large with about 15 user groups across India,” says Madhusudan Shekar, Head – Solutions Architecture, Startups, Amazon Internet Services. “We have users and developers who champion the need to come together, and most run a meetup every month. This is also a great talent hunting ground, so a lot of sponsors come in.”
About 80% of participants at such events are professionals, while the rest comprise entrepreneurs, freelancers and students.
For them, looking for work opportunities is as important as staying abreast of evolving technology.
“When you think about meetups, there are many that happen for different interest groups. There could be meetups on Kubernetes, Docker or Python itself, so definitely, you have a VP Engineering or CTOs who are key participants in most of these meetups and people get a chance to meet them. It is definitely a good route to recruit,” says Maneesh Sharma – Country Manager – GitHub, the world’s largest online open source developer community now owned by Microsoft.
The way companies hire technical talent is changing. There is now greater emphasis on actual skills than qualifications.
Participating in hackathons and being active members of a tech community offer people an opportunity to build their personal brand and convey a clear message to potential recruiters that they are on top of what is happening in the industry. For students, events like these are a good way to understand companies that are working within a specific technology area.
And, sponsoring such events has a signalling effect – that you are serious about the technology, says Zainab Bawa, CEO, HasGeek, which runs several technology events in India.
Aawaz.com, a platform that hosts podcasts and spoken-word audio on-demand, has recruited candidates from such community events, says co-founder Sreeraman Thiagarajan, adding that the talent at such events is usually entry-level and not senior executives.
Hiring tends to be high on the agenda for a lot of participants during tech community events, says Gautam Rege, cofounder of Josh Software, which actively promotes programming languages Go and Ruby. Josh has been closely associated with organising and sponsoring events on Ruby for almost a decade.
“As a company sponsoring the event, you send out a clear signal that you are supporter of the community and a thought driver, which helps in building your brand,” Rege says.
It also helps companies stay in tune with specific technology and market requirements and hire accordingly, he adds.
As part of its recruitment process, Josh also looks at a potential employee’s GitHub profile to see how active she is within the open source community.
“If you look at the open source community — if you’re active and contributing to open source code and working collaboratively on projects with people across the globe, you are enriching yourself and are making yourself visible in the community,” Sharma of GitHub says Many specialised technology events end up attracting senior talent, who often tend to stay away from the more regular meetups, providing them a platform to network and look around for opportunities.
These events are a great conduit for people, especially women, who have taken a break from work to return, says Bhuvaneswari Subramani, Director Engineering Operations at Infor and an AWS Community Hero who often participates in tech community gatherings.
“This gives them a chance to see what’s happening and discuss the certification and learning curve. I have a lot of people pinging me independently to ask for suggestions,” she says.
Beyond hiring, community events also play an important role in peer reviews, according to Bawa of HasGeek. While the medical fraternity can publish its work in peer reviewed journals and be validated for new work, there is no such platform for peer review and validation of technology.
“This creates a space for practitioners to talk about how they did something — like how an ecommerce business is building its recommendation engine,” she says.

How I got into HasGeek Crew
Background about me
I am kracekumar, graduated from Amrita school of Engineering, Coimbatore in B.Tech IT (2007-2011). I am working with IBM India Pvt Ltd, Bangalore as Associate System Engineer from 14th July, 2011 til 16th July, 2012.(C# developer but never wrote single line of code in c# in IBM).
I am GNU/Linux user for 3 years and developed application in PHP, Rails, Flask(all are hobby projects).
Scene
I was not happy with job at IBM and I had training bond for one year(14th July, 2011 to 13th July 2012), decided to resign from my job once bond period is over whether I have new job offer or not. I usually look for job posting in Hasgeek job board from time to time. I was very interested to work in Linux, Python or Rails and wasn't interested in Java or C# or Windows Technology.

Myself and Kiran had conversation in IRC and kiran revealed hiring policy for hasgeek is contribute to hasgeek codebase and if it is ok you are hired. I agreed to the deal.
Contributing to Hasgeek Codebase
From 14th May 2012 to 18th May 2012 I worked on Hasgeek Tv, My contribution here. Most of the code was already completed by kiran, but there were few incomplete pieces which I completed.
On 21st May 2012, kiran and me decided we will meet on 22nd May 2012 in CIS(Center for Internet Society). On 22nd May I was half an hour late to the place. Then Kiran, Siddarth and me had discussion(not an interview) about each other. Kiran and siddarth informed me that they are working on new project Hacknight for which they want me to contribute and depending on the outcome in three weeks, I might be hired.
Journey
It was Kiran, Siddarth, Sajjad and I who worked on hacknight. The code is Here. I worked on hacknight code in evening after coming from office and saturday in CIS. Most of our discussion was carried out in CIS(Hasgeek office ) , IRC, Github.
I had initial learning curve looking into other hasgeek libraries like Coaster, Baseframe, Lastuser, Peopleflow. Thanks for Kiran, Siddarth, Sajjad who answered all my silly doubts and helped to get started.
My mistakes
I broke the code twice. Both were due to improper tests.

On 7th June, 2012 Kiran informed hasgeek is happy to hire me after final talk on 9th June, 2012. All went well, I informed I am happy to join Hasgeek. I will be joining hasgeek on 17th July, 2012.

Hiring Freshers for Start-Ups in India
So let's get the context out first. Working with students over the last year and being a student the year before sort of puts me in a position to start off with this post. Worked with some amazingly talented students in Tier 1,2,3 colleges across India. Also met lots of Entrepreneurs, Start-Ups and this post comes out of my recent attempt to help some start-ups get some good fresh grads for different roles.
Firstly - from the Start-Up angle:
1. Very few "want to join a start-up" category (this I can say with my conversations with SutraJobs, Akash - student coder and many more)
2. Very few "exposed to start-ups and the eco-system (I myself got excited only in Sep 09 - my final year at college)
3. How to reach out and get best talent in? (I loved this reply from Sanjeev on PubMatic's Jobs/Career page to Swarup's post on "The real reasons start-ups struggle to hire in India"
4. Orientation - now this is out of my conversation with Shashank ND, and we ended up agreeing with our experiences that parents & family also need to be exposed to Entrepreneurship in India and that it's not a "Bad" thing (Family Taboo will be there, but efforts have to go in)
Secondly - from the Student angle:
1. Pool A (Very few "who want to join a start-up"): The Knowers are also divided into coders/geeks/hackers and non-coders
2. Pool B (Not-exposed category)
Let's focus on Pool A because that's where Start-Ups should focus on. The Question arises if you are a Student in Pool A, you need to search for these start-ups who are searching for you as well, a few tips and places to be on at:
a. Sutra HR jobs , b. Events - Loads of Entrepreneurship based (less branded events - focus their, rather than the Big one's!) , c. We need something like Venture Loop (thanks Nakul) in India for Indian Startups (maybe when the eco-system is as established in the coming years) , e. HasGeek (really good portal for coders)
Now coders, find or are found - as they are most in demand by (if you are a start-up) moving and finding them nervously moving in and around at OCC, Chennai Geeks, GSoC, Dev Cafe etc. - catchable - but you need to look out for them. There is an interesting start-up StalkNinja (a new free-lancing concept focussed on Student Developers) - will also help catch the good guys!
Non-Coders (the students) - you need to search for exposure and exposure/experience and networking is the key for you. (bang that in your head)- there are amazing opportunities popping up every day - 3 years back never existed. For e.g. (Start-Ups catch them here btw as well):
- Opportunity Websites (LetMeknow, Twenty19, 10internship)
- Experiential Learning opportunities via really cool programs such as Summer in a Start-Up (which many Entrepreneurship Cells beyond the e.g. in the link, on campuses are running). Or better, just attempting to run a Start-Up (might fail, but will give you great learning)
What I would advise Start-Up's looking to hire some good freshers and talent:
1. Network (Simple - when you goto colleges to speak, or meet young 22-23-24 bracket people at conferences, make sure you get them and talk to them and try to know them - make them feel wanted rather than run a mill people)
2. Students know Students :) 1+1+1 leads to more
3. Seniors know juniors (catch the pass outs and ask them to connect you to their juniors)
4. Groups - try catching hold of organizations working with young people trying out of the blue stuff (Jagriti Yatri's, Grassroutes fellowship, Working at Entrepreneurship Cells in colleges) - make concentrated efforts here, and not randomly - go via organizations at campuses.
5. Don't try recruiting firms - you just won't get the right mentality
6. And finally - if you meet young students, take time out and help them out as much as possible, it's all karma - it comes back. it will all come back. Maybe a year later, but it will.
So this post's idea came from 2 wonderful blogs (Ravi Mohan & Mayank) I read on Start-Up Hiring in India - and I wanted to focus on the fresher's angle a bit.Hope students & Start-up's reading this get some ideas on how to get over this problem of freshers talent working at Start-Up's.
