The City Bakery: Vietnamese Cinnamon [Festival 2015]

"He got stabbed in the throat," says the man at the table next to me. I glance over, hoping to locate some context, and instead find the man, silver haired and smiling, flailing his arms and upper body around in jubilant pantomime. If this is the fellow's usual reaction to esophageal agony, I suspect he was disappointed by today's Vietnamese Cinnamon Hot Chocolate1. The cinnamon challenge this is not. The rest of us, who don't prefer rolling around on the ground trying to put out internal infernos for the benefit of YouTube followers, should be happy here.

Like the stout beer two days ago, this is a relatively mild addition. On the spectrum between Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Big Red Gum, it takes the side of breakfast cereal. There is a slight grit here, but that's a small price to pay for heat. Still, I look forward to later in the month, when the chili gets churning, and my tongue starts burning.

Halloween ComicFest 2015 - Results and Winners!

HCF2015 was a BLAST!  We had a ton of people turn out for an amazing event and gave out hundreds of FREE comics to kids, adults - anyone who showed up really!

We also had a costume contest and took LOTS of pictures!  You can see all the different costumes below:

We could only have ONE winner - FINN BUTLER and his Flying Jetpack Boy costume!

   We also had a raffle for (4) Munsters POP Vinyl figures and the winner is...

Helsinki Coffee Festival

Helsinki Coffee Festival järjestettiin 20.-22.3.2015. Sielä pidettiin myös kahvialan kilpailut. Itse olin kisaamassa Cuptastingissa. Kilpailu oli itselleni ensimmäinen kahvialan kilpailu, jos Aeropress SM skaboja ei lasketa.

Perjantaina lähdin heti aamujunalla kohti Helsinkiä. Paikanpäällä piti olla jo yhdeksän jälkeen. Kisaajille pidettiin ensin ohjeistus ja sitten kisat aloitettiin. Olin vasta viidennessä heatissä niin ehdin kierrellä festarialueella jonkinaikaa.

Festivaalit pidettiin Suvilahden Kattillahallissa.

Festarien infopiste. Tältä pisteeltä mukaani tarttui kuvassa näkyvä kangaskassi.

Turun Kahvipaahtimon piste. Turusta olen tilannut kahvia heidän nettikaupastaan ja oli hienoa nähdä TKP:n väkeä livenä. Festareilla he keittivät kahvia GS3:lla, Aeropressillä ja Kalitalla. Tältä pisteeltä ostin yhden paketin Tanzanialaista Tweegaa. Tweega oli todella erinomainen kahvi. Marjainen, erittäin makea ja mukava hapokkuus.

Good Life Coffee. Kolmisen vuotta toiminut kahvila Kalliosta. GLC avasi vähäaikaa sitten myös paahtimon ja ostinkin heiltä paketin Etiopian Wottona Boltunaa. Maistelin myös Laurin kettämää Warkaa espressona. Täytyy sanoa, että on hieno ständi ja kahvipaketit. Kiitokset Good Life Coffee!

Good Life Coffeen pisteellä pidettiin Nordic Approachin cupping. Tarjolla oli kahveja Keniasta ja Etiopiasta.

Cuppingia oli myös Johan & Nyströmin pisteellä. Kahveja oli montaa erilaista. Itseäni säväytti J&N:n Panamalainen Pineapple Thief. Yllätyin miten kahvi voi maistua kuin makea ananasmehu.

Kaffa Roastelyllä maistelin Kenialaista N’Dumberia ali-, yli-, ja oikein uutettuna. Maisteltavana oli myös samaa kahvia kylmäuutettuna. Kahvi oli kyllä Kenialaiseen tapaan erittäin herukkainen. Itselleni ostin pussillisen Burundilaista Munkazea, mitä olen maistellut aikaisemmin Kaffan kahvibaarissa Punavuoressa.

Festareilla oli muutama todella tuore pienpaahtimo. Yksi näistä oli Punainen Kirahvi Jyväskylästä. Paahtimo aloitti toimintansa tämän vuoden alussa ja paahtaa kahvinsa kilon paahtimella. Kahvit tulevat Punaiselle Kirahville Nordic Approachilta.

Toinen uunituore paahtimo on Suomen pohjoisin. Rovaniemen Paahtimo paahtaa kahvinsa kilon paahtimella ja ostaa kahvinsa myös Nordic Approachilta. 

Cuptasting kisat menivät omalta osaltani ihan hyvin. Jatkoon olisi menty, jos olisin maistanut yhden kahvin enemmän. Voiton vei toista kertaa peräkkäin Panu. Rata oli todella vaikea ja maistoin oikein neljä kahvia kahdeksasta.

Festareilla käytiin myös brewers cup ja vuoden barista kilpailut. Itse seurasin brewersiä muutaman kilpailijan verran. Voiton vei Mikaela Coffee Collectivelta. Vuoden barista kilpailun voitti Kalle Freese Coffeelta. Itse en ollut sunnuntaina seuraamassa baristakilpailua.

Festarit olivat todella mahtava tapahtuma. Ensivuonna uudestaan.

The City Bakery: Ecuadorian Single-Origin Milk Chocolate [Festival 205]

Who else watched that Super Bowl commercial for Ecuador last night, and thought to themselves: "I mean, that's a respectable looking turtle and all, but more importantly, how's their Hot Chocolate?"

Well, The City Bakery has the answer. And it's an answer you're going to enjoy.

Long time readers of The Hot Chocolog (Hi Mom!) will know that my real favorite blends include milk chocolate. Don't get me wrong, I love the full spectrum, but The City Bakery, especially, does milk chocolate right. And this February they've stepped it up.

Single-Origin is a growing trend, and one that is happily no longer confined to coffee beans. Last year, during my post-festival depression, I found the remarkable single-origin Hot Chocolate menu at L.A. Burdick, and sampled each and every one of their sources. It wasn't exactly a scientific study, but it was scientasty1. I came up with a ranking for all their varieties too, which I apparently forgot to post. One of these days I'll take this job a little more seriously.

In any case, I was thrilled to find it here at the City Bakery. Staring down at that beach colored froth, I knew right away I was going to enjoy... Tastes of vanilla and something smoky, we're not dealing with a bland milk chocolate, but a complex cup that deserves to be savored2.

A real winner.
