Nerissa looks at the Overlander, and only sees him leaving.

This is a gift of foresight, rather than prophecy. She does not have visions of the future that show themselves in rhymes and words, waiting to be carved into the stone walls of her home. She is nothing like Sandwich, who looked into the future and left warnings for them all, unable to decipher them fully until the events have come to pass. She does not see battles and glories; all Nerissa ever sees is people leaving.

Not once has she seen a future with a place for her in it.

Sandwich was praised for his visions; Nerissa is ridiculed for hers when each of her visions has come to pass. There are never heroes or villains in the futures (and pasts) she foresees. There are only bodies to be buried.

Nerissa looks upon the people of Regalia, of the Fount, and understands that she has no place among them. No one ever welcomes an omen of death, after all.

She keeps to herself, locked away in the Room of Prophecies, and waits for the future to meet them in all its unforgiving glory.

Here’s the thing about the future: there is only ever one outcome, but the pathways there are endless. It’s the choices made to get to the destination that alter what it really means. A message warning the Warrior about the death of a baby was not meant for Boots, but for the Bane. Anyone else would not have hesitated, but the Warrior has cared for others far longer than he has hurt them, and so his past choices lead to the future where he spared the Bane, if only for a moment.

The Bane will still fall at his hands, but not as a child. Death comes for them all, in the Underland. There is no escape.

The past is always what shapes the future. There is a reason why she divines past events when trying to understand what events wait for them ahead.

The people of the Underland consult Sandwich’s words endlessly, pouring over his prophecies without ever acknowledges how looking at what he said in the past affects their future.

Nerissa says nothing about this, and stares into the still waters of her cup in the hopes of seeing something other than her face; a horrible face that only ever saw people as the corpses they would become.

She keeps her distance, watching the people live in a distance place called the present, and keeps her visions to herself.

It is lonely, but it is familiar.

If she chooses this herself, the scorn of others will not affect her so badly.

(She still hurts. She has never been good at lying to herself.)

The loss of her parents, after a series of vivid dreams showing how they die, made her realize that everyone will leave one day. People are only ever safe when they are dead. All bonds and relationships are temporary. It will all disappear when the future comes.

Luxa has only ever known the violence of the Underland, and the burning desire to live despite how often she convinces herself she will die. Nerissa looks at her and sees a crown on her head, bonds stronger than steel, and an empty throne besides her.

How lonely. How inspiring.

We are all children, Nerissa wants to say, when Luxa speaks of battle and death the way she used to speak of picnics and playdates. But that isn’t quite true: they are Underlanders, and this is how they all live. Children confront death quickly, and though it hurts, it is inevitable. Few live long, and even fewer die of old age. Such is the way of their world.

Could she live long if she went with you? Nerissa wants to ask the Overland as he looks through items found from the Overland, always forgein and always ready to leave. This is a silly question; their worlds are too different, and she can see clearly how the Underland has hurt the Overlander. He was not always a Warrior, nor will he always be. The scars will remain.

Scars are the only thing the Underland can give.

She sees Boots singing to crawlers and envisions a future where she lives in only one world, forgetting this one, and is happier for it. Her skin is dark, her cheeks are flushed, her body carries no scars, only laughter.

She sees Hazard unable to sleep, and knows in the future he will venture to the Overland and spend much of his time away from Regalia, unable to feel at home without his father besides him.

Nerissa sees them all leave and looks away.

“Cousin,” Luxa greets as she enters the Room of Prophecies. Nerissa doesn’t look at her, focused on running her fingers over the words carved into stone. The feeling of it keeps her grounded in the present instead of drifting away and being surrounded by visions of funerals.

“Cousin,” she says again. “I know this is strange, but I must know… What future do you see for me?”

Nerissa wants to laugh. She wants to cry. She knows that Luxa wants to know if the Overlander will return to her in the future. She knows she has no answer Luxa wants to hear.

But Luxa grew up when she wasn’t looking, too caught up in what will come to see what is already here. No matter the answer, Luxa will take it with grace and continue to live her life as a queen.

“I thought you didn’t want to hear of my visions.”

“I wasn’t fair to you. Regardless of what others may think of you and your abilities, you will continue to see the future. It would be unreasonable for me to treat you badly for something you can’t control.”

Nerissa lowers her hands and faces Luxa. Already, she wears a crown. Or perhaps she has been wearing one for a while? Or… the crown is gone when she blinks. Another vision, perhaps. Nerissa can’t remember when she last saw Luxa before her, instead of in the future.

There remains two prophecies for the Warrior. The Overlander must come back for fulfill them. After that, however, there is no future for the Overlander to be a part of.

She sways a little, letting go of her focus to allow the future to play out in bits and pieces before her. “The Overlander will end the war, and you will begin the peace. You will not be as alone as you think you are, but you will still be lonely in a way that can’t be changed.”

Luxa frowns and glances up at the Prophecy of Time. “It will happen soon, then,” she says.

“Yes. Soon the Warrior will no longer be needed.”

Nerissa watches as Luxa tenses, eyes dark and troubled. She knows how Luxa feels for the Overlander. It is hidden well under her focus on her responsibilities, but Nerissa has seen how Luxa relies on him, trusts him, is comfortable in his presence. She wonders, sometimes, what it must be like to love someone instead of mourning them.

“It is for the best. Gregor belongs in the Overland,” she says, trying to hide her hurt.

The Overlander, the Warrior, Gregor. Nerissa has seen how much pain he will go through. Referring to him by his title rather than lets her keep her distance from him. It does not do much, but Nerissa takes her little comforts where she can. It would be unbearable otherwise.

“He does,” Nerissa agrees, and turns her attention back to the Peacemaker, hoping for that future to greet them soon.

“But there will be peace? As long as we endure whatever comes next, we will have peace?”

Nerissa nods, absentmindedly. This is a frequent guest in her nightmares: war that changes the very shape of the Underland, the peace that can only arrive on tides of blood. “Yes, there will be peace. It will come at a great cost, but there must be peace in the end.”

Luxa is silent for a long moment. Then she draws herself up, easily settling into her role as queen, and thanks Nerissa. She leaves after that, and Nerissa is alone again with only the ghosts of the future to keep her company.

A day before the Overlander arrives again in one of his frequent visits to the Underland, Nerissa wakes up gasping for breath. It is only practice that keeps her from screaming.

Soon. The end is soon.

Nerissa looks out to the lights of Regalia, and can only see how they will go out.

She stays silent.

The only kindness she can offer is swallowing down visions of the future so she is the only one who suffers them.

Whether this is a kindness to others or to herself has never been clear.

Nerissa mourns the living, and keeps her place in the future, always watching but never a part of it.

BBL Costs, Prep + Recovery

Im booked!! I talked to a few friends who I know either got this surgery or is getting this done. I wanted one since forever but I wanted my teeth done first. The deciding factor came down to my birthday plans.

Originally I was going to do a birthday tour. First weekend of October in Miami for carnival, 2nd weekend in Atl for Freak Nik, 3rd weekend in Bahamas and finally Nola for the finale. Well Nola was just hit with a storm so yeah that’s out. Once I totaled up the flights, hotels, food and spending money.. I was like hmm, I can get a fat ass and started this process. Immediately looked into surgeon and Dr. Pena was my favorite, his bodies come out so mf snatched, he’s located in Columbia. Columbian surgeons can take out way more fat than American doctors however, the fatality rate is stupid and ultimately the factor that made me choose an American doctor.

The next step was choosing the surgeon for the body I have and the one I want. I weigh 151 and im 5′6″ I’m considered a “skinny bbl”. I started researching doctors in Atlanta (so I could recover at home) and Miami (like duh). I chose to go with Dr. Desouza in Miami with CG Cosmetics for a few reasons. First, I love the look of his skinny bbl’s on other women with the same body type, weight and height as me. Secondly, he was having a special for the end of the year (lipo 360, bbl, jplasma for $6500 for the surgeon I wanted) this almost sold me but it was the surgery date!! Jplasma is skin tightening procedure to help with loose skin, you can only get this with lipo. When they perform lipo they created canals under your skin to remove the fat.. well those same canals are essential when getting Jplasma.

Ok so I decided on the surgeon, contacted the cosmetic group and had a consultation which is pretty much just front, side and back view pictures.. I think they use this to make sure you don’t need a tummy tuck prior to surgery. They also asked me questions about previous surgeries and if i’ve ever had anesthesia. The next step went pretty quickly, we talked about what would be lipo’d (abs, waist, back.. I wanted inner thighs, an additional 2k, but was advised to wait on my pre-op to decide), when I wanted to book and how I'd pay. My consult was on August 30th.. I bitched up when she attempted to take my payment. I am a money hoarder and spending that much money made me feel like I was being financially irresponsible. I called one of my Aunt’s who I felt wouldn’t judge me and also give me sound advise. We talked about my fears, why I was getting the procedure and of course money. My Aunt gave me excellent advice, reassured me and is a professional CNA who offered to accompany me so yeah I dare not turn that down, lol. August 31, 2021, I called my coordinator (the contact between me and my surgeon) and told her I wanted to book, she asked me when I’d be ready and I requested first available which was 9/20/21!! Excited is an understatement.. I'd be 24 days post op on my birthday. After I calmed down I paid in full for multiple reasons: had to in order to secure the date, all surgeries book in this year had to be paid in full, it was the only way to get the discount.. My coordinator gave me so much information I couldn’t see straight (I was also high as shit off life thinking about a fat ass and me in the same sentence).. she emailed + texted everything, congratulated me and we hung up.

I get the emails: “raise you hemoglobin with these vitamins” I purchased vitamin C $2, folic acid $2, iron $3 and floradix $35 - amazon, I take them as directed on the bottle and start eating my ass off (just to give my surgeon more to work with, lol). Talking to one of my gf’s I realize I have to be cleared for surgery?!?! What? I open my email and sure enough I have to have blood work done 15-20 prior to surgery, it was 9/3 and a Friday.. SHIT!! I fly over to an Piedmont Wellstreet urgent care facility as recommended by my friend (she started this process as well so I was crazy grateful for her experience and that she shared it with me). Urgent care was full but opened the next day, my ass was in that line at 7:32 am, I was the 13th person in line and they opened at 8. I get to the desk and my appointment is at 10:30 and I'd have to pay the office visit fee to be seen, it was $155. I came back at my allotted time and was told how much all of my labs would be.. $302. My labs were to be processed and faxed to my surgeon by 9/9 because Labor Day weekend so.. yeah.

I discuss accommodations with my Aunt and realize it’s cheaper, safer and more beneficial for me to go to a recovery house. I search high and low baby and most of them were booked.. found one regardless with lymphatic massages included called Flawless Recovery House. This wasn’t my 1st-6th option but the one with availability on my surgery date so I paid a deposit to hold onto my spot. Total was $1312 for 5 days with 5 massages, I paid a $200 deposit. Next, I booked my flight, round trip $116 with Delta. My surgery date is on a Monday, I have to have my pre-op done on the Saturday prior so I booked a hostel from the 18th-20th on booking.com for $66. I know I could have gotten an airbnb or hotel room but I wanted this experience. I want to go to Amsterdam and stay in a hostel so I need to know what to expect. Also I cannot party, smoke, drink or eat before surgery so fuck it.. a hostel will do, lol.

I smoke big fucking weed and watched someone else’s bbl journey today and realize if I fail the drug test, my surgery will be cancelled and it’ll cost me $1500 to reschedule. Boy the shit sent me into panic mode like I've never experienced before, only to find out the weed isn’t the issue nicotine is, it slows down your heart rate. I can smoke weed just not out of a wood or a rillo and nicotine takes 3-4 days to get out of your system so a bitch barely made it. I just won't be smoking until I get back home lol. Just to be super informative no alcohol, diabetic meds, cocaine, pcp or anything that will fool with your heart or makes your bleed. Today is 9/11 and im one week out from my pre-op... my body is a joke cause I haven’t gained a single pound and normally it’s nothing for me to put on weight. I took my acrylics off, when you’re put to sleep they monitor your oxygen levels with those clamps they put on your fingers and they aren't the most accurate when you have on dark polish or acrylics. I also cannot wear lashes cause when they go to fill this ass in I'll be laying flat on my face. I mean my hair didn’t have requirements but I figure since im naked I might as well be bald.. y'all should see me rn, I look very much like a young man but im hype. I’ll be back later to tell y'all what I pack and purchase prior to my flight. Imma put the dates at the end of each update.. today is 9/11/21

My surgery group send me list of supplies that I would need and the cost came to roughly $1100. Naive me was definitely going to purchase everything on the list from them until I saw Leslie’s (@prettyhaute - on ig) bbl vlog. I went on amazon and got away with murder. Below I’ll list what I purchased and the price I paid versus what the surgery center was quoting me.

Faja - I paid $74.69 - Quoted $160.50 || BBL Pillow - $26.99 - Qouted $42.80 || Arnica pills - $8.95 - Quoted $37.45 || Compression socks - $13.99 for 3 - Quoted $10.70 for 1 || Foams - $17.99 for 3 - Quoted $64.20 for 3 || Scar Cream $$29.82 - Quoted $80.25 || Arnica Gel - $7.92 - Quoted $21.40 ||

There a shit ton of items on the suggested list that I didn't purchase but way more items that wasn’t on the list I still need for instance:

Crocs, benadryll, robe, adult diapers, straws, earplugs, liquid iv, stool softener, antiseptic body wash, avocado float, back board, urinal, pineapple juice, throat calm, 3 moo-moo’s and a massage roller (the crocs are the only thing on this list that cost more than $20). My flight is at 7:15a tomorrow and im so damn nervous but excited. I will spend Saturday and Sunday gallivanting around Miami and then body , ody, ody, ody, ody, ody. I still have to send my entire itinerary to my aunt but I think im all set. 9/17/21

Pre-op was packed but I went on Saturday and was in and out in an hour. I was charged for a covid $80, 3 post-op massages $150 and a drug test $20. I went over my clearance paper work with a medical assistant who also took 9 before pics of me. Keep in mind, your surgery can be cancelled or reschedule if all of you labs aren’t at the surgery center on pre-op day. I cannot stress how important it is to take your labs with you!!! Mine were faxed over from urgent care but I was also provided copies which I took with me. The photos were sent directly to my surgeon to analyze before surgery. From my knowledge, I was also to be fitted for my faja but that never happened, do NOT leave pre-op without a faja!!! I paid for 3 massages from CG totaling $150 which I regret badly. I do NOT recommend getting massages from the surgery center. There are 4-5 different surgeons performing surgeries on any given day and they do at minimum 4 surgeries per day, that’s at least 15-20 different girls with the same surgery and post-op date. CG had 2 massage therapists to drain 15-20 girls. I was drained for 9 mins, your drain massages should last at least 45 mins for maximum drainage. I only used 1 of the 3 massages I paid for and was denied a refund. That is a huge downside to CG once they have your money good fucking luck getting it back! Ps. Ellie was a royal fucking cunt!!!!! She told my medical assistant that I didn’t need a faja so I was never fitted for one and woke up out of surgery with a binder on versus a faja like I should have. I wanted to slap the shit out of her and took the charge on the chin but I wanted my surgery so I refrained.. I was put on a 12 hour fast and contacted an hour after pre-op with my surgery address and time. My fast started at 7pm the day before surgery and my surgery time wa at 6:30a, there was a $300 for showing up to surgery late. All I could bring to surgery was compression socks and a faja (that I didn’t have), I was instructed to bathe with dial (the orange one) before surgery to make sure my incisions weren’t infected, no lotion, perfume, deodorant, makeup, nails, lashes, no jewelry/piercing or hair products and no personals ie, purse money, wallet also you will need a companion or surgery will be cancelled. I’ll upload all my paperwork at the end. Surgery day arrive at the surgery center at 6:15 am how about the entire fucking staff was late! Bitch I was outside in Miami alone with compression socks on and a moo moo, LIVID. No one arrived until 7:10 am, baby I wanted to kill everyone but fuck it, it was go time. I’m escorted to a room, changed into a paper gown, piss tested, my labs were reviewed again and finally my surgeon comes in! We were in the exam room alone which was weird cause I was asshole naked but he kept it 1000% professional, he asked me what I wanted and I say “the fattest ass” he looked me dead in my eyes without a single hesitation and said “it’ll heal like a diaper” LMAO. I showed him areas that I wanted lipo’d to death and he marked me up, I didn’t aka e picture of my mark ups but shit was rolling by then, he walked out I put my paper gown back on and the anesthesiologist walked in. I expressed my biggest concerns to him, I didn’t want to die and I didn’t want to wake up during surgery. He explain why the drug test was so important because certain street drugs will have adverse effect with the anesthesia. My anesthesiologist walked me up to the surgery room and I hopped on the table, they put massage boots on both of my feet and inserted an iv, the mask was put on my face and my heart rate went to heaven, I wanted to shit myself bro. The anesthesiologist told me to make a tight fist, I asked what time it was, 8:08am.. I woke up to a nurse helping me into a wheelchair with a binder around my waist and I was scream crying because my entire body ached, I didn't know where I was and the anesthesia is no hoe. I was escorted to my recovery house’s transportation van and taken to my damn bed.

I chose Flawlesss Recovery House with Ms. Opal. I paid a $200 deposit before 2 weeks before surgery and the balance the day I left. I opted for a 5 day stay. I loved it there bro and couldn’t imagine trying to recover at a hotel or air bnb! There were nurses there 24-7, I was roomed with one other girl but the house had a total of 4 bedrooms, one of which no one occupied and the door was always shut but my room was the only room with 2 beds, the others had 3 beds. I had a call button, it was love, the nurses came expeditiously when I rang it. They made 3 home cooked meals per day and I don’t eat meat, they accommodated me with no hesitation. I loved it man. So couple hours after surgery I attempted to use the bathroom on my own and blacked out, the anesthesia is really fucking strong and took an entire day to wear off (for me), the nurses helped me pee in a cup until then. Post op day 9/21/21, I went in to make sure I looked good, got a faja finally and received that lousy as drain. Back to the recovery house I was able to walk finally w/o passing out and in went my foams, I also could pee by myself with the use of a urinal. I was constipated for 2 days, first bowel movement was on post op day 2. I paid for an independent massage therapist named Tatiana, she used a ultrasound machine to massage me so I cancelled her. When I took my faja off for my massage it was washed and dried by the time I was done, I took a shower and put my faja on with my foams. I cancelled Tatiana because don’t let nobody use no machine on you until you are at least 2 weeks post op, hand massages only. All the girls were getting massaged by the literal best massage therapist (in my opinion) her name is Brittany, I could cry she was EVERYTHING, I was tender but she put the painful massage theory to bed! She taught me how to drain myself and how to open my incisions without the q-tip looking thing. In 45 mins she drained 5 of those doggy pad things worth of fluid off of me. I received 4 massages in 5 days. I left on Saturday 9/25/2021 on Sunday, back in Atlanta, I received my 5th massage and that when I was told I have not one but 2 seromas. I swear on everything I love it was because everyone wakes up from surgery with a faja on but not me (Fuck you Ellie, lil bitch) I had on a binder (its what they use for tummy tucks). The lady who did my 1st massage in Atlanta was Bri, not gone post her ig cause she did a damn good massage but when I asked her to syringe drain me the good sis stuck this long ass needle in my seroma but could get the fluid out, cancelled her too (the massage was good asf tho but nah). Tired and tried I bit the bullet and booked a packed with Dream Body ($455 for 5 massage, I think, don’t quote me look it up on there site and follow them on ig) because they are the biggest name in Atlanta, Jayda Wayda goes to them. The most painful massage yet, yes Michelle lil ass is so strong but she will get the fluid up off you. She made me tear up bad and no matter how much I screamed or even tried to push her off of me she understood the assignment, Michelle helped me get back into my faja after my massage and told me my faja was too big and to have it altered. She recommended a lady on ig @siri2sir but to know me is to know I altered my shit myself. Allow me to tell y'all, I look good asf!!!!!!! 10/4/2021

The Psychology of Successful Dog Bathing

"Can I wash my own dog? It can't be that hard can it?" These are the words that I hear everyday as I go about my business working at the Pooch Parlor in Northern Idaho. Each time I walk a customer through this process, I find myself wondering why in the world something so simple is so doggone hard to explain. I run a shop for full service and self-service dog grooming and bathing, and I LOVE it! There are dogs, and owners, of every size, every breed, and every temperament that come in to use the self-service doggie wash. Most owners are excited, some are scared, and some are cocky, but no matter who they are, or what they do for a living, there is nothing quite as intimidating for them as washing their own dog in public! The thought of doing this can give even the most confident person, performance anxiety, and for good reason! It is a true test of trust and tolerance and friendship for the person and dog companion. And, on a very basic level, it is an honest mirror for the owner, and how he or she deals with life, and with conflict. The likelihood of a successful experience for both is completely dependent upon the psychological relationship that exists between them, and, to a large extent, the ability of both to comprehend the body language of the other. You may be surprised to know that I have found that dogs are supremely better at reading their humans than their humans are of reading them. It is this relationship between human and canine, that shows itself without modesty during bathtime, and, keeps me coming to work day after day with a smile on my face.

My clients have been giving their dogs baths in my shops for 10+ years now, and, each year is more entertaining than the last when it comes to watching regular people washing their own regular dogs. The average person that comes through our doors is highly successful, which usually means - intelligent - and, because like attracts like, so is their dog. And, so why oh why, they ask me, should this simple task of cleaning their dog be so difficult? I ask them time and again, "Well, how well do you speak dog?" Invariably, their reply is a blank stare. So, this is the time to ask yourself, "How well do YOU speak dog?"

There is a lot to say about the theories of why dogs and humans behave the way they do, but I'm going to get back to the practical things to look for while bathing your own dog. The bottom line to remember is that your dog's energy and personality traits are a mirror to your own. Take this into consideration when attempting to get him into the tub and have him be happy about it.

1. Deciding when to bathe your dog. Timing and Personality traits: Timing is important. Look at your own needs regarding timing to know how your dog will react. Are you the kind of person that is up for anything anytime? Or do you need to accomplish your day in a scheduled, systematic way? How do you do with new experiences? Do you find them refreshing and fun, or do you feel fearful until comfortable with a new activity? Your dog is going to deal with the bathtime experience in the same way you deal with life experiences. Remember that your dog is going to reflect your own personality traits - not necessarily the traits you show the world, but the traits that are truly inside you.

a. Fun-loving, extroverted, and social humans. If you enjoy regular physical activity, then so will your dog. For this type of person and dog, I suggest you take your dog out for a bout of exercise before the bath. In the city where I work, we are fortunate to have a designated beach on the lake just for dogs and their humans - dogbeach. There is a long path to run or walk on, and there is a large beach area to swim and play in. This is the perfect scenario for pre-bath timing. The dog can choose to get muddy, run, socialize, or just enjoy being outside. In any case, the dog is able to spend big reserves of energy outside in a fun way, just like letting human children play before naptime. If you love exercise, do something like this with your dog before taking him into your own tub or a professional facility for a dog bath. A common fault of the social dog and owner: Just because you are friendly, out-going person does not mean everyone wants to accept your friendly, and out-going gestures. It's hard to fathom, I know, but it is true. If you have a very social dog (if you are a social person), it is easy to forget that many dogs (like their owners) are not social and do not appreciate the social requirements (like butt-sniffing) of others. Please remember to respect their space when in public or otherwise. Keep your dog restrained and under control, even if your dog has the friendliest intentions.

b. Non-social, active, or inactive humans. If your personality is not conducive to social interaction, then I still suggest that you walk your dog or do something that is comfortable within your life that involves light exercise before bathing your dog. Taking a walk with your dog does wonders to alleviate excess tension or stress for both human and dog. By getting rid of stressful energies during a walk, it does not present itself during bathtime. Getting exercise is especially important for those humans,( I mean dogs), that are highly nervous. I recommend giving your dog Valerian root (liquid form) or Rescue Remedy (liquid or spray) orally 30 minutes before the bath. Both of these products are natural remedies to calming down jittery nerves- and it works great for humans too. If timing is important in your life, take your dog to a self-service bathing facility when the least amount of people are there, usually early or late in the day. A common fault of the non-social dog and owner: they communicate poorly within their own species and with other species. Many people that tend towards isolation, often do this because they never figured out how to communicate effectively in human society. Their dogs typically have the same problem. I have seen it happen many times that owners of aggressive dogs unwittingly encourage their dog's unwanted behavior, when they think they are doing the opposite. They do this by projecting their worrying thoughts about the 'what-ifs' of a social situation. Dogs of this type of owner act out their dog interpretations of their human owners signals. The dogs often pick up the 'what-if' fears of the human as the request of their human, actually creating the 'what-if' behavior to occur. Without human intervention and boundary setting by the owner (requiring advanced communication skills), it is quite common for this type of dog to exhibit increasingly aggressive behavior. Most owners are dismayed by their dog's aggressive behavior, but they simply lack the skills required to communicate what behavior they will and won't allow from their dog. I recommend that if you have a dog that is displaying increasingly aggressive behaviors to consult a professional dog behaviorist or trainer. Just a few simple tricks will convey an accurate message to a dog that is most likely misunderstanding your expectations.

Language barriers for humans and dogs. Its no surprise that miscommunication between owner and dog happens often. If you are a human that is finding you don't understand why your dog does what he does, remember, you are learning a whole different language and culture. Give yourself time and give your dog time to understand each other. Just don't expect your dog to act like a human, especially during conflict. It takes time and practice for anyone to learn a new human language. It's no different learning dog language. We all know how to interpret a human smile in society. When a dog pulls his lips back over his teeth, it typically doesn't mean he's happy! Would a human dream of greeting a new acquaintance by sniffing their butt? Right! But, in doggie language, that's the equivalent of shaking hands. A dog that shakes his head to get the slobber off of his mouth is no different than a person smoothing his slacks or dusting off his shirt to look more polite. The differences are huge, so give yourself and your dog a break if you have hit a communication block wall.

2. Deciding where to bathe your dog: There are not a lot of choices when it comes to bathing your dog. A. You can use your own bathtub at home which requires no human socializing - hard on your back, it's very messy with extended after cleaning, and potentially traumatizing to human and dog. B. Bring your dog to a self-service doggie wash shop - easier on your back, requires some basic social skills by owner and dog, can be noisy and hairy, requires no after cleaning, and it does cost more than just the shampoo. C. Tie the dog to a fence and wash him with a hose in the yard (hopefully on a hot, sunny day) - not easy on the back, hard on the dog with cold water, potentially traumatizing for nervous dogs, but does not require human or dog socialiaing. D. Wash the dog in your nearest lake -which is very popular in my neck of the woods - hard on the back, requires advanced human and dog social skills, is potentially harmful to the environment, and how clean can you really get a dog in lakewater?

Regardless of where you wash your dog, take into account your own physical limitations, and your dog's physical limitations. Is it worth wrecking your bathroom and hurting your back to wash your dog at home? For the clients I see, the answer is a definite, no! Emotional requirements are often a factor for dogs. For instance, (in general) Labrador retrievers have no issue being bathed in a lake (even though they don't get clean), but they often resent being restrained in a tub with a sprayer hose pointed in their direction. For a farm dog that has never been away from home, tying them to the fence is a better solution than trucking them to the city and asking them to have manners in a grooming shop, or in a populated lake. At least next to the fence, even with cold water, they are comfortable with where they are and what is expected of them.

My vote is, of course to find a self-service doggie wash facility. The equipment is professional and easy to use, the water is warm (most of the time) and typically the dogs get treats when they walk out the door, which makes them happy campers. So, for those that want to know about washing your dog at a laundradog facility, here you go:

2. Getting your dog in the tub and getting him to stay there! At this grooming shop, the average dog that comes in for self-service is around 100lbs. All the dogs are washed at waist level where they stand on a grate in the tub. Getting them in the tub can be a trick. It's kind of like asking a human to put ice skates on, and stand on the ice and not worry about how to do it. The easiest way for dog and human is to not give the dog time to decide whether or not he wants to. (Not the easiest task for shy or overprotective owners). The owner is given a large choker chain or cloth noose which goes around the dogs neck.

Leading: We have the owner quickly lead/pull the dog up the stairs with another person on the other end of the dog to give a quick boost on the butt end. The dog is on the grate, and in the tub before he has decided to be worried about it. Once the dog is in the tub, the owner hooks them in (not something you can do in your tub at home) to a variety of metal hooks inside the tub.

Choking: The dogs that are new to having a bath will sometimes turn in the tub and pull on the choker chain. We prefer the choker chain to a regular noose because the dog quickly learns with a choker that he is in control of whether or not he feels the choking sensation. The second the dog realizes he controls his own choking, AND realizes his owner is going to allow him to learn this (this is very difficult for the overprotective and/or mother types of owners-most all of us!), the pulling behavior stops. With a regular cloth noose, or one that does not self-regulate, the dogs will pull and pull and often never learn that they have the control over their own pulling more than any other behavior during the bath. Owners feel like they are directly causing their dog injury and should rescue them immediately when they hear them coughing and sometimes gagging. It is natural to feel concern over your dog choking, but it helps to think of the dog's pulling and coughing similar to putting a toddler into his crib for a midday nap.

Many human toddlers HATE taking a nap and will cry hard enough to cough and gag. If parents rescue them from their cribs when this happens, they are reinforcing this coughing behavior for their child. Parents that monitor the crying, and coughing from a safe distance where the toddler cannot see them, soon find that their babies submit quietly to naptime without expecting to be rescued each time he utters a sound. Naps and baths may not be pleasant to begin with, but they are both essential habits of life. Dogs have the same learning behaviors regarding rescue. Owners that react with excessive concern over the pulling (as the dog is expecting), or crying and screaming tantrums, find they are only encouraging more pulling and tantrums from their dog. This point is so crucial that it is worth repeating. The more upset and worried the owner gets over the dogs behavior, the more they get of that dog behavior. If the owner is calm and without fear - and projects this to their dog, it is not long before the dog understands that pulling on the chain is only hurting himself, and that tantrums are a waste of their energy. When the owner believes everything is fine despite pulling and tantrums, the dog does too, and he stops the undesirable behavior accepts that today is bath day!

So many nurturing owners find this part difficult, but try to remember, when you expect your dog to learn how to control his own anxiety, he will learn, but it requires that you LET him learn. The best ways to learn to control ones own anxiety is to actually go through the experience of having the anxiety and dealing with it. If you are the type of owner that cannot allow your dog to experience this emotion without taking over and stopping the experience, your dog will learn to go into an anxious state more and more easily because of the reaction that he can expect from his owner. This becomes upsetting for both dog and owner and as you can see becomes an escalating cycle. If you allow your dog to go through this experience of the bath, anxiety and all, you will see that they will calm down and before you know it, you have a dog that allows you to bathe him! And having clean dog is essential to most dog owners. When your dog does calm down, i.e. quits pulling on the noose and allows the bath experience, that is the right time to express heightened emotion of happiness through praise and treats. If you take this time to praise your dog, it won't be long before your dog asks to be washed with a happy, wanting-to-please attidude.

However, as with any rule, there are a few exceptions: old, very young, asthmatic, and dogs with neck or throat problems should be closely watched if they exhibit excessive pulling on the choker chain.

Ignore or not to Ignore: Most of the time, I recommend to owners to simply and quietly ignore their dogs protesting to get the behavior to stop (and it does), with the only exception being a small puppy (like a yorkie) or an old and fragile dog. Both the young and the old dogs that are not used to baths can injure their tracheas or create a medical problem (like asthma) if their nervous behaviors are allowed to escalate. It is in this circumstance that I tell the owners to use a harness to hook the dogs in the tub or in the case of a small and wild puppy, to use a sink or bucket in which they can immerse the dog in warm, soapy water. Puppies are wired to swim and that's what they do if they find their bodies in water. Swimming is easier to work with than a freaking out jumping bean. If you do choose to ignore your dog's protesting to the bath, REMEMBER to give lots of praise when the dog show's signs of acceptance and/or begins to calm down.

Drying Your Dog: Drying a dog depends on the type of hair, type of temperament and grooming experience the dog has. If you have a shorthaired dog, towel drying is generally adequate. In the grooming shop, we use high-power dryers that blow the water out of thick or double-coated dogs like shepards, collies, and huskies - and in this case - standard poodles.

Put cotton in the dog's ears before you begin as the dryer is loud. Make sure there is a minimum of play in the noose or chain that connects the dog to the tub, as the more room the dog has to throw a tantrum, the more room he'll use. Start the dryer on the back end of the dog and aim the dryer side to side moving towards the head until the water is not dripping off the dog any longer. Most private owners go home with their dogs still dripping because of the tantrum factor. This is where the above information comes into play. The majority of dogs are nervous at first, but they quickly learn that the air is only loud, not painful. If the owner stays calm, the dog will quickly find this state during the drying process.

There are a few more minor steps that do occur in the grooming shop, such as brushing, nail trimming, anal expression, ear plucking and cleaning, teeth brushing and scaling and more. Regardless of who you are or what you do for a living, the chances of your dog having a pleasant experience during the bath is highly dependent upon the ability of the dog's owner to understand his or her own needs regarding life and society. Consider all the factors, energy reserves of your dog - spend them before the space wherever you go will increase your odds for success. Consider how much you actually do know about dog language. Above all else, remember that you, the owner, are in charge, and that if your dog is temporarily distressed with a new situation, you have to stay calm long enough to allow your dog to understand and accept the experience. It's a curious notion that a human would have to delve into the basics of his or her own psychological needs to give their dog a great bath experience, but if you do that, you and your canine friend will have many years of happy and successful bathing experiences.

Description: You arrive home one day to find a wedding invite for two of your best friends from high school. You knew this day was going to come eventually, but even with that said, you weren’t prepared to return home. At least not after 7 years of avoiding Buckhannon, West Virginia. Or rather, avoiding him; your ex-best friend and the secret love of your life. But maybe it was finally time to face your past, to face him, and everything else that happened on that horrible night. Who would have knew that your prom would end up being a total disaster, and the very last night you’d spend in Buckhannon for the next 7 years? you certainly didn’t. That’s for sure.

A/N: I sadly don’t own any of these characters. And no beta reader, so I do proudly own all the errors and this story, so there’s that.

July 2018 - Present.

“Red. Who saw that coming?” You laugh as you step out of the change room. You are currently with Hilde, Wanda, Nat, and her Aunt Maria trying on bridesmaids dresses.

Wanda and Hilde laugh with you as they exit the change rooms beside yours. They both glance over at you. “I know, right?” Wanda says and then Hilde adds, “Plot twist.”

A loud dramatic sigh comes from behind you all, “please, you all knew this was my colour scheme for the wedding, don’t act surprised.” Nat shakes her head as she walks over to the three of you to check out the dresses, up close and personal.

You, Wanda and Hilde are currently standing in front of a massive wall of mirrors, in an adorable little boutique on Main Street. The shop was entirely too expensive and exclusive for your tastes, or bank account, but it was charming nonetheless. If it wasn’t for Nat covering the cost if your dress, you’d have fainted at the price tags—You actually still might faint at the price tag, even without it actually attacking your savings account and/or credit cards. The thought of spilling anything on the dress gave you anxiety, as this would definitely be the most expensive thing in your wardrobe. Hands down.

Nat motioning for you to spin catches your attention, and you do as instructed. She looks you over with a sharp eye before turning and motioning the same for Hilde, and then Wanda. Once satisfied with the 360’s her face remains unreadable for a few moments, arms crossed over her chest, giving you all a few final glances before a massive smile breaks out across her face. “They actually look fantastic on all of you, and from the looks of it, they shouldn’t need to many alterations.” She looks back and forth between you three, once more, “what do you girls think?”

You hum for a moment, checking yourself out in the mirror before replying, “I think they look good, mine may just need to be taken up a bit.“ You pull up on the fabric at your thighs, trying to figure out where a good end length would be.

Nat’s Aunt Maria, who up until this point, was so engulfed in her phone you weren’t even sure she knew what was going on, gestures for one of the attendants to come take a look at your dress, without so much as breaking her eye contact with the phone in her other hand. An attendant hastily makes her way towards you without so much as a word.

You just stand there, rather awkwardly, as the attendant begins measuring your legs and pining the bottom of the dress. You aren’t used to this sort of treatment, all your clothes just came from normal clothing stores where you found your size, tried them on, then bought them regardless of if they were a little too long or ill fitting in some places. If you liked them, you liked them. But the lengthier ones you’d always vow to take in to be hemmed, however you’d never actually get around to doing it. Your life was just always far too busy. Or at least that’s what you kept telling yourself. That was your excuse for never actually visiting a tailor.

“I don’t think this one will need any alterations,” Hilde pauses and clutches the back of her dress to pull the fabric taut over her stomach, “except maybe just taking in the waist a little.”

"Mine fits almost perfect, I just need the straps shortened slightly,” Wanda says as she messes with the shoulder straps.

Once again Maria flags over attendants to look at the 2 dresses, though this time she did actually glance up from her phone for a moment.

“But I think other then that, they all fit rather nicely,” Maria muses as she looks over the three of you. Guess she was paying more attention then you thought. But then her phone rings loudly throughout the room and she excuses herself to go answer it outside.

You nod to yourself at Maria’s input, Wanda and Hilde hum their agreement as well, all of you lost in looking yourselves over in the mirror. You tightly spin your hair and hold it up to the back of your head, in a mock up do style, trying to see how the dress will look with no hair on your shoulders. “I adore the colour.”

“Me too,” Wanda adds as she swivels from side to side inspecting all the angles she can.

“And to think you all mocked the colour when you first came out,” Nat playfully scoffs.

“I wouldn’t say we ‘mocked’ the colour,” you hum and move your head back and forth as you think over your next words. “More like pointed out the predictability of the dresses being red. Classic Nat. Though, red has always been your colour,” you smile sweetly at her as you blink your lashes quickly, feigning innocence.

“And it always looks exceptional on you,” Hilde adds as she turns to wink at Nat.

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever,” Nat smirks and waves you all off then mumbles, “kiss asses.”

“Well it is a very nice ass,” Wanda shrugs nonchalantly, causing you, Hilde and Nat to burst out laughing. You shake your head and refocus back on the mirror in front of you, as Nat wanders over to speak to the dress consultant.

You look over to other two woman, “does this dress remind you girls of something?” You ask quietly, trying not to interrupt Nat’s conversation.

They furrow their brows as they both turn back to their reflections. You all stand in silence trying to remember why these dresses seem so damn familiar. Then after a few minutes Wanda finally pipes up, “the winter former.”

Your eyes widen, “oh god, you’re right. That’s totally it!” You turn to them again, “this looks just like the dress Nat wore to it.”

“It does not,” Nat says dryly from behind you and you jump slightly. You didn’t even hear her approach you all again, she is like a damn ninja. Always.

“No, it totally does,” Hilde and Wanda say in unison.

Then you add, “the fabric is a little different, yes, but the fit and colour are damn near the same.”

“Not even,” Nat rolls her eyes. “That was a fun night though,” she trails off as a frown takes over her face, and then Wanda quietly finishes the thought for her, “until it wasn’t.”

You cringe slightly at the memory of that night but quickly hide it and plaster a fake smile on your face. “It was a good night, minus the end,” you pause then unconsciously scrunch up your face as you whisper, mainly to your reflection, “and the days following it.”

You can feel their eyes on you, they had all clearly heard you, and one glance around the mirror tells you they did for sure. You see the three of them staring at your back now, looking either concerned, apologetic, or both. You sigh then shake your head, “girls, it’s in the past. No point crying over spilled—punch.” You grimace at your choice in words then step off the platform and head towards the change rooms. Turning back to look over your shoulder and smile, “okay, I’m going to change, as I’m pretty much dying to see your dress, Nat.”

She smiles weakly and nods her head. You know she wants to say more, but leaves it alone. Which you are thankful for, but as you enter the change room, even with trying not to think about that night, your mind is clearly a glutton for punishment. As your thoughts go directly to that memory…

December 2010 - 8 years ago.

You walked into the beautifully decorated ballroom—Yes, ballroom, not gym. The dance was actually being held at Nat’s estate as the school’s gym just wasn’t big enough. No, it wasn’t normal to hold school functions at students homes, but your grad class was larger than normal this year, and there wasn’t really anywhere else that could comfortably fit all the tables for the students in attendance. Let alone allow for a dance floor and a stage.

Plus Nat’s aunt was part of the PTA, and was heavily involved in the school functions, needing to know what was going on around her niece. And what different things were happening at the school. She was a bit of a control freak. So when the issue of needing a location for the dance came up, a few parents offered up their homes for it. Maria being one of them. And after a process of elimination, Nat’s house was chosen just due to its sheer size, in comparison to the other homes volunteered for the party.

Some of the teachers were still used as chaperons even though the dance wasn’t at the school, along with a few of the PTA parents as the group was so large.

Then when the issue of costs for the dance was brought up, Maria had offered to cover all of it, meaning the food and decor, claiming it as her yearly ‘charitable’ donation. So that’s exactly what she did.

But speaking of charitable donations, Steve had awkwardly asked you 2 weeks before the party if you’d want to be his date to the dance. At first you were over the moon, but then you quickly crash landed, as your mind realized he was clearly only asking you because he felt bad for you. And a pity date to the dance was not something you’d even remotely be okay with. No, you’d rather not go at all, then to have to go with Steve, solely because he felt bad that no one else had asked you.

So you had declined his offer, informing him that he should ask whoever he actually wanted to. And that you’d just sit the dance out, if no one else asked you. He had insisted that you were who he wanted to bring, but you weren’t born yesterday. You knew Steve was way out of your league. Hell, everyone at your school knew that. And you’d be damned if you let yourself ruin his night by forcing him to be your date. So regardless of what he said, you told him ‘No’ and to ‘Just drop it, my mind is made up’. So he did, thankfully.

However, three days before the dance, when Nat heard you weren’t planning to attend, thanks to your lack of a real date, she flipped her lid and threatened to damn near disown you if you didn’t go. She even forced you to pick out a dress from her—ridiculously oversized—closet.

Turns out she had to go to formal parties with her aunt often, so she had an insane amount of beautiful—and ridiculously expensive—dresses for you to choose from. So here you were, walking into the ballroom by yourself. Well, that’s a lie. You showed up with all your friends, you just didn’t technically have a date.

Though Steve refused to ask anyone else—regardless of how much you insisted he should—which frustrated the hell out of you. He was always so damn stubborn. The moment you came down Nat’s stairs he had offered you his arm, which you originally shook your head at, and refused to take, but with one stern glare from him you quickly accepted for fear of a ‘brotherly’ scolding.

So even though you had originally turned down his offer, you arrived to the party on his arm. Making your refusal of his offer pointless in the end, which he happily pointed out the second your arm had settled on his. Assface.

But even though you had entered with him, you made sure to keep reminding yourself that he wasn’t actually your date. Even though he had asked you, it had only been out of pity. And he only refused to ask anyone else because he knew you’d end up without a date. Guy was just too damn sweet for his own good, and it drove you batshit crazy.

One glance around the room showed that all eyes were on you entering on Steve's arm, the instant whispering made your skin crawl. This was exactly what you were trying to avoid by turning down his offer. The look of initial shock on everyone's faces that then quickly faded into understanding. Clearly they all figured it was just a pity thing as well. Just as you had. You quickly turned your eyes down to the floor and removed your arm from his, taking a large step to the side. In a desperate attempt to distance yourself from him.

“Y/N?” You heard his concerned voice from above you, and you quickly glanced up at him, noticing the deep frown on his face as he looked down at you.

You forced the best fake, carefree smile you could, but judging by his unchangeable expression he saw right through it. “I’m uh, I’m gonna go find my spot,” you gestured with a thumb over your shoulder.

He nodded slowly, “okay, I’ll come with you.”

“No, that’s okay, really,” you waved his offer off then glanced passed him. Seeing most of the football team currently standing off to the side, obviously trying to get their Captains attention. If their staring and flailing arms were any indication of that. But that was just a guess, on your part. You pointed at them and Steve looked in their direction. “Looks like your needed elsewhere,” you chuckled.

He turned back to you with a sigh, “yeah, looks like it. I’ll go see what they want then come find you.”

It was your turn to sigh now, “you don’t have to babysit me all night, Steve. I want you to enjoy yourself, not be stuck with,” you gestured to your whole form, “the loner crew all night.”

He shook his head, “there was so much wrong with everything you just said. First off,” he glared at you, “it’s not babysitting. You’re my best friend, Y/N, therefore I clearly enjoy being around you, more than anyone else. Which leads into the ‘enjoying myself’ topic. I’d honestly have more fun with you, and your sarcasm, all night then anyone else.” He chuckled and you rolled your eyes, “and lastly, if I remember correctly, I’m also a member of this so called ‘loner crew’. Maybe even more so then you are, as I did, in fact, ask someone but she savagely rejected my offer.” He clutched at his chest like he’d just been stabbed in the heart.

“You’re so dramatic,” you shook your head then poked him in the chest lightly, though sternly. “And you chose to not ask anyone else, so that doesn’t count as being in the ‘loner crew’.”

He smirked at you, “and you chose to reject my offer. So,” he shrugged.

“Only because it was a pity offer,” you scuffed.

“It wasn’t a pity offer!” He huffed and narrowed his eyes at you.

“Okay. Okay. Fine,” you waved a dismissive hand around. “Let’s not rehash this whole debate again.” You grabbed his shoulders and attempted to turn him, which failed miserably. Damn him and his giant ways! “Okay, seriously, go see your teammates before one of them either flails too hard and pulls a muscle, or knocks over some poor unsuspecting student. Think of the students, Steve!” You feigned horror and outrage, causing Steve to chuckle and shake his head.

“You make some very valid points. I’ll go wrangle them in then come find you.” He pointed a finger at you just as you were about to open your mouth in protest, “zip it, Y/L/N. We already discussed this.”

You crossed your arms then pouted at him. “Fine,” you grumbled then spun on your heels and walked away.

You’d found your spot quickly, noting that Nat had sat your whole group of friends at the same table, off in a corner. Thank god for that. With the room as dim as it was, and being in the corner, both you and the table were basically concealed from everyone else.

So as you sat there, alone, embracing your stag status, you peered around the room at all your classmates. People watching was always a favourite pastime of yours, seeing how others interacted, and handled different social settings and personalities, was interesting to you. Trying to figure out if someone was relaxed or anxious based off their body language. Some you could read like a book, others, not so much.

Your eyes landed on Nat and Bucky on the dance floor, standing close and swaying to the music. A smile grew on your face as you watched them for a moment. They were relationship goals to the fullest, and you hoped one day you’d have even a semblance of what they have. Even just a fraction of it would make you happy. As anything was better than nothing at all.

Then your eyes continued on to find Sam and Hilde, standing off to the side of the ballroom, just watching the room. They were laughing loudly and talking animatedly about something, which you couldn’t actually hear, but you could assume it was competitive in nature. They were forever challenging each other, betting on random things, and messing with each other, relentlessly. They were always entertaining to just watch, either up close or from afar. Both being far too competitive for their own good. You knew they were up to something, and the second you saw them shake each others hands, that suspicion was confirmed. They were clearly agreeing on a bet as we speak. About what? You had no clue. But you knew it was probably something both ridiculous and hilarious.

You shook your head and laughed as your eyes continued to scan the room. Finally landing on Wanda and Clint at the food tables, piling their plates high with a little—a lot, in Clint’s case—of everything. Them being not only together, but also at the food tables, didn’t surprise you one bit.

They were like two peas in a pod, and you’d learned early on, that they had become basically inseparable, ever since Pietro’s death. Clint was the main reason Wanda had made it through the loss. He had stayed by her side the entire time, every step of the way, and beyond. He could never replace Pietro, they both knew that, but he helped fill the void Pietro’s death had left behind in Wanda's heart. And oddly enough they almost took on a twin like bond, they could actually have these full on conversations with just their eyes—which was the weirdest thing to witness, no joke. But aside from that, they had a bunch in common. Like how they both damn near ate their weight in food, though they never gained a freaking pound. You laughed to yourself as you watched Clint try something off his plate—that he clearly didn’t like—before he quickly looked around then discarded the offending food back on to its original plater. Acting like he’d never even touched it in the first place. You shook your head then were startled as you felt a tap on your shoulder.

Quickly turning you came face to face with a hand, presented out to you, your eyes drifted up from the hand to see Ezekiel smiling down at you. You didn’t know him that well, besides that he was Kiara—Madi’s best friend’s—twin brother, part of the football team, and from all accounts—that you’d heard at least—he was interested in men, but just hadn’t come out yet. High school students sucked, that was a fact. So you totally understood him waiting till after high school to come out.

“Care for a dance?” He asked sweetly. Had it been anyone else you would have declined, but something in his eyes told you he may have needed this as well. And he was a sweetheart, nothing like his sister, or her friends. You’d interacted with him a few times in passing and could just tell he didn’t have a malicious bone in his body. Plus Steve always spoke highly of him.

So you nodded and slipped your hand into his then stood up, “I’d like that.”

He walked towards the floor and awkwardly put his hands on your waist, keeping an appropriate distance from you. Your arms went around his neck then you both started to dance. “So, having a good time?” You asked.

“I guess,” he shrugged. “Are you?”

“Yeah. I mean, as good of a time as I can have, what with coming to the dance alone.”

He furrowed his brows, “wait, didn’t you come with Steve?”

You chuckled, though it was slightly bitter. “No,” you shook your head, “we arrived together, yes, but he isn’t actually my date.”

“But I thought he asked you?” He wondered out loud.

“Ah, yeah, he did,” you peered around then caught a glimpse of Steve off to the side with his football buddies, all of them having a lively discussion about something. But almost as if he could feel your eyes on him, he glanced over, and before your eyes locked with his you quickly looked back up at Ezekiel, “but how did you know that?”

His eyes widened momentarily, “oh, I duno. Must have just heard it in passing, I guess,” he shrugged again.

Weird. But you’d let it slide. “Who did you end up coming with?” You asked.

“No one,” he smiled weakly and you returned the gesture.

“Aren’t we just a pair,” you shook your head then turned a little more serious. “This might be over stepping, but I just want you to know that I’m sorry high school students suck. And I truly hope you find your happiness one day, Zeke,” you smiled, and this time it was genuine.

He locked eyes with you, “I dunno what you mean,” he trailed off as he took in your knowing look then sighed. “How did you find out?” He asked defeatedly.

“Just a lucky guess,” you shrugged. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. But I mean it, I hope you get everything you want and deserve in life.”

He smiled then looked passed you for a split second before smiling and looking back down at you. “Thank you, Y/N. I hope the same for you as well,” he winked then released you and stepped away before you could respond. Standing in the middle of the dance floor alone was awkward, you should have just kept your mouth shut. Clearly you had offended him, since he had just up and ditched you in the middle of the floor.

But just as you were about to walk off back to your table, you felt a tap on your shoulder once again, you spun around to see your favourite set of baby blues. “Dance with me?” He asked as he offered you his hand. A brilliant smile adorning his handsome face.

“How could I say no to that?” You laughed then took his hand. His hold on you was drastically different from Zeke’s. Yes, his hands were in pretty much the same spot, but he held you much closer. Damn near flush to him. Which, like always, had your mind swimming.

“I was hoping you’d say that,” he smirked.

“How’s your night been so far? You managed to save the innocent students from flailing limbs, I see.”

He chuckled and shook his head, “oh yes, the innocent students are safe for now.” Then he looked down at you and you both stared at each other for a moment, before he softly said, “and it’s much better now.” He released one arm from around you to lift it up and tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. His eyes following the motion of it. “Did I mention at all how beautiful you look tonight?” He asked quietly, as his eyes focused back on yours.

You felt the blush forming on your cheeks as you looked down to avoid his intense gaze. Moments like this made pretending your crush didn’t exists damn near impossible. And you knew that if you continued to stare up at him, you’d have another awkward moment like at the lake. One where your heart would win out against your brain, and you’d foolishly attempt another stupid move on him. “You hadn’t.”

“Clearly I never put my thoughts to words then. That’s my bad. Because you look absolutely stunning tonight, Y/N.”

You peeked up at him and the sincerity on his face made you heat up even more. How this boy—who are we kidding, he was basically a man—could be so charming and sweet made your head hurt. He was the total package, and whoever ended up holding his heart one day was going to be one very lucky woman. You were already jealous of her. And how truly blessed she was going to be with him. “Thank you. You look pretty handsome yourself,” you smirked up at him.

“We make a good pair,” he smiled.

Your heart fluttered at the words. If only he meant ‘pair’ in the way you wished it was. You nodded, “that we do.”

The song started to change and you used that to your advantage. You needed to get a little distance from him, before you messed up and either said something stupid or made another unwanted advance. You let go of his neck, then took a step back, feeling his hands slowly slip from around you. “I’m going to get some punch.”

“Ah,” he rubbed the back of his neck, “I’ll join you,” he nodded.

You both walked silently towards the drinks table, it wasn’t exactly awkward, but wasn’t really comfortable either. Then just before you reached the drinks table you noticed him pause beside you, and glanced over your shoulder to see Penelope, Madi’s other best friend, whispering something to him. He looked over at you for a second and the look on his face told you she had asked him for a dance. Before he could even open his mouth you nodded and gestured for him to go. He furrowed his brows for a moment before looking down and shaking his head, then looking back up at Penelope, clearly accepting her offer to dance, as he offered her his hand then they walked off.

You signed deeply, your heart dropping a little, then continued on to the drinks table. You weren’t allowed to be upset by him dancing with other girls. He wasn’t yours. And he wasn’t your date. You had no right to be upset. You shook your head then started to pour yourself a glass of punch, turning around once you had and sipping it as you glanced out around the room. Trying to relocate all your friends once again, which wasn’t hard as you peered over at your table, and saw six shadows sitting there.

You finished off your glass then turned to refill it, but before you could even lift the punch ladle, you felt two hands plant on your back and shove you. You were so caught off guard that you stumbled forward and reached out to try to prevent yourself from falling.

However, one of your hands landed on the rim of the punch bowl and it tipped towards you, dumping all the punch all over you and the floor. You managed to not take out the whole table, but your dress was ruined and the punch was no more.

You spun around and instantly had a few lights flash in your face, then heard that disgusting sound. Madeleine’s laugh. You saw her and Kiara standing a few feet away, phones in hand, laughing hysterically at you. And just like that, Penelope’s invite to dance with Steve made way more sense. You narrowed your eyes at Madeleine then looked down at your now soaked and stained dress.

“Punch is for drinking, Y/N. Not wearing.” Madeleine laughed and gestured to you, “though, oddly enough, it does make you look better in that dress. Or maybe it’s just because it draws the eye away from your face to somewhere less atrocious.”

You went to snap back at her, but realized everyone around you was now staring and laughing. You looked around at all the faces, everyone finding your humiliation hilarious, and that alone made your eyes start to sting as the tears formed. You were mortified.

You locked eyes with Steve from across the room and he quickly released—damn near shoved—Penelope away from him and headed towards you. You shook your head at him, then reached down to hike up the bottom of your now super heavy, soaked dress, then turned on your heel and headed for the doors.

You ran as fast as you could till you made it out of the ballroom, then pushed yourself even more as you ran to head outside, you didn’t want anyone to see you like this. Especially not Steve. You passed a few of the teachers as you ran out front, not paying any attention to them, or their confused stares and shouts. You’d run home if you had to, screw being here.

You finally made it outside and down the front steps. Stopping to catch your breath. “Miss Y/L/N?”

You spun around to see Mr. Banner coming towards you. He was your school guidance counselor and had helped you through quite a few hurdles during your time at Shield High. “Is everything alright?” He asked, then paused as he took in your stained and ruined dress then frowned. “What happened?”

You muffled a sob behind your hand and shook your head, “it doesn’t matter now.”

He stepped cautiously towards you, “I don’t believe that. If it truly didn’t matter then you wouldn’t be this upset. Is there anything I can do to help?”

He was a sweet man, inside and out. He never made you feel uncomfortable or insignificant. And he was always there with an open door and an open ear. You’d gone to him many times over the school year, and he would just listen and give advice where it was needed. He never judged or downplayed your feelings or issues. But right now you just didn’t feel like talking. You knew you should have just stayed home. You broke down and started to cry even harder.

“Oh, Y/N,” he said softly, “do you need a hug? I know I’m not your dad, but my kids tell me I give pretty good hugs,” he shrugged and chuckled. Clearly trying to lighten the mood.

You nodded weakly, you’d have killed for a hug from your dad right now, but you’d settle for a separate dad hug in this case. Then he wrapped you up in a giant bear hug. Which surprisingly felt just like your dad’s. He patted the top off your back comfortingly then after a minute he pulled away. “It’s going to be okay. It gets better, I promise,” he smiled. “Would you like me to call your dad to come get you?” He asked.

You were just about to nod your reply when Steve came frantically running out the front doors. “Y/N!?” He yelled just before his eyes landed on you and Mr. Banner. He paused then headed towards you both.

Mr Banner turned back to you, “would you like me to stay or?”

You looked to him then realized he still wasn’t sure what had actually happened to you, and was attempting to make sure you weren’t put in anymore awkward or aggressive situations tonight. “It’s okay, Mr. Banner. I’ll get Steve to call my dad,” you wiped the tears from your eyes.

“You’re sure?” He asked.

“Yes,” you nodded.

“Okay, well myself and the other teachers are just inside, come find one of us if you need anything.” Then he waited for you to acknowledge what he had said, which you did with a nod, before he turned and headed back into the house. Leaving just yourself and Steve outside, the latter now stopped a few feet away from you.

“Y/N?” He said quietly as he slowly stepped towards you.

You nodded just as a gust of wind blew passed you and a chill ran down your spin. You crossed your arms over your chest, just now realizing how cold it was outside. You’d left your jacket upstairs in Nat’s room, along with all your other belongings. Crap.

He reached out to you but you shook your head, and took a deep breath, “Steve, I’m soaked. I’ll ruin your suit.”

“I could care less about my suit,” he said as he took a hold of your forearms and pulled you into him, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and kissing the top of your head. “Come on, let’s get you inside before you get sick.”

“I don’t want to go back inside,” you mumbled into his chest.

He tightened his arms around you then nodded, “okay, then where would you like to go?”

Peeking up at him you asked through a sniffle, “cheeseburgers?”

He smiled down at you, “of course. Let me just get Nat to bring us your stuff.”

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and texted Nat, receiving a damn near instant response. Clearly they had all witnessed what had happened, and Steve coming to find you, so they were obviously waiting on word from him. He got the valet to get his jeep, and once it arrived he started it up, then helped you into the passenger seat. Taking care to ensure that all of you dress made it in the car, before he leaned over and cranked the heat to warm you up while you waited.

Nat, Wanda and Hilde came out at that point, and he shut your door, then went over to meet them at the bottom of the stairs. You could hear the slight murmurs of them talking through the closed passenger window. And saw as Nat handed over your belongings and then they all looked passed him to you. Both Nat and Wanda just smiled weakly at you, which you returned, then your eyes shifted to Hilde, who looked like she wanted to punch something. And stat. But she quickly corrected it and nodded her head to you, a motion you also returned. Then they each hugged Steve, waved at you and turned to head back inside.

After a moment, Steve climbed into the drivers seat and handed you your bag, filled with your clothes and belongings.

You both headed to your favourite 24/7 dinner, Huddle House, where you changed out of your dress in the bathroom, then you both just hung out and ate food for a while.

After your late night burger adventure, Steve drove you home and dropped you off. Promising to return once your dad went to bed. Which he did. You both stayed up late and chatted for hours before you couldn’t stay awake any longer and Steve left to head home. Giving you a giant hug before he did.

The night hadn’t gone even remotely to plan, but Steve had helped you get over the embarrassment, and assured you thay no one would even remember in a few days. It had calmed you down and lifted your spirits that night. However, the second you reached your locker, your first morning back at school, you realized just how wrong he was. People would remember, as there was photo evidence to remind them.

Plastered all over your locker, and most of the halls, were printed off and blown up pictures of you, covered in punch, with a range of expressions on your face. You ripped all the photos off your locker but felt the sting of tears, once again, when you glanced around and saw everyone laughing and pointing at you.

Before you could even react you felt someone's hands on your shoulder turning you around and then tucked you into a warm hug against a giant chest. It registered instantly that it was Steve. And then his reassuring whispers in your ear confirmed that thought. And you just clung to him as you watched Nat, Bucky and Hilde yell at the kids around you to ‘piss off,’ ‘grow up,’ and ‘get a life’. While Sam, Wanda and Clint ripped all the photos down that they could find.

Steve walked you to class and then basically hovered over you all day, and the days following when more photos kept being put up all over the school.

After a few days everyone got bored and the photos stopped appearing. But even without the reminders of that night, it stuck in your mind. It’d be years before you finally let go of that memory.

At least until it resurfaced while you were trying on bridesmaids dresses for Nat’s wedding. Speaking of which..

Present - July 2018

“You okay in there?” You hear Wanda ask from outside your change room.

“Ah, yup. Yeah,” you say back as you finish getting dressed in your normal clothes. “Be out in a second.”

Once you leave the change room you take a seat in between Wanda and Hilde, on a small couch in the middle of the room. Wanda informs you that Nat has gone to get her dress on, and that she’ll be out any minute.

The three of you sit and chat until you see the curtains being pulled back on the larger change room off to the side. Then your breath instantly catches in your throat at the sight of Nat in her pure white gown. It has to be thee most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen.

It is stunning, and suits Nat so well. Not to mention it fits her like a damn glove. You feel the tears well up in your eyes, as she steps up onto the podium to looks at herself in the mirror.

“What do you girls think?” She asks as she turns to look at you three, arms stretched out.

“Oh, Nat,” you say in awe, “you’re breathtaking. Bucky is going to have a damn heart attack when he sees you.”

“Yeah?” She asks as she starts to tear up as well. “You think he’ll like it?”

“Are you kidding?” Hilde chokes out with a chuckle as she wipes a few tears off her cheeks, “he’s going to love it.”

“And not just because of the dress, but because you are the one wearing it,” Wanda adds.

Nat nods quickly, and you can see she is attempting to hold back her own tears now. “You three need to stop crying, you’re making me cry!” She scolds but you can tell she is joking.

All three of you stand up and walk over to her, embracing her in a group hug as you all giggle through your tears.

“So you girls approve?” She finally asks after a moment.

“Uh duh,” Hilde laughs.

“100 percent,” Wanda nods.

“Fuck yeah, we approve,” you smile at her as you all continued to hug for a moment, before finally pulling away.

Nat turns, wiping her tears away and looks into the floor length mirror for a moment. Then she abruptly spins to face you three, and her eyes are wide, “holy shit. I’m actually getting married!”

You all giggle at the nervous, shocked look on her face, then nod and all say in unison, “yeah you are.”

“And to Bucky, of all people,” you say as you make of huge show of playfully cringing in disgust.

That makes Nat burst out laughing, along with Hilde and Wanda. Effectively killing her nerves on the spot. Which is the exact thing you were aiming to do.

She calms herself down and then gives you a thankful smile, to which you just nod in a ‘it’s my pleasure’ sort of way. You glance around at your three best girl friends, and realize just how much you’d missed them. And just how much you want them all to be happy, and in your life every day. The thought of having to leave them again in a few short days is not sitting well with you. At all.

There are thousands of things that make people happy. Rendering it in real estate takes a person who has a strong desire to transformation their lives for the better and think big. Any individual can become a great real estate investor. It is going to take a lot of do the job and can be a struggle at times but in the end it will be the most amazing feeling ever. The people that make it in real estate investing most of have a few things in common. First they run the real estate investing business like any other business out there. You want to review your own goals daily and read them out loud to your self. This way you remind yourself everyday why you are making your business. How should you start to write down you goals? First of all you should think big, and by big I mean BIG. If your goals are too small you will easily reach them and have nothing else to look forward too. You might want to start off by asking yourself the question if I had the money and time in the world what would I do, exactly what would I buy, how would I spend the time, and how would I spend my energy levels. Are you starting to write these down? Well you should be. Take into account what you want, spending time with family, traveling the world, the best passenger cars, a castle, owning a small country, running for web design manager, having the biggest real estate investing business in your area or near you. Whatever your dreams and what you want out of your life, prepare it down. Some of my goals are becoming free, touring the world, having a Ferrari, having 10 vacation homes across the globe. Right now I am just trying to get you out of your comfort zone regarding thinking and let your imagination run. There are several solutions to set goals. I have learned a lot of ways you can set you will goals and there is no right or wrong way. The perfect ways that I have found to set your goals is to break individuals up into two categories. First your short term dreams. This should be goals from a month out to all-around a year. The second is your long term goals these goals presently think big goals and what you see for your foreseeable future. For year one I like to first make a list of the things I want to achieve this year and I will give you an example of easy methods to do that. For year one you want to be very precise first you want to list what you want your income to be at the end of your year, next how much cash in the bank you want (this will be money in your checking account, not assets). Next you want to record how much you are going to give. Giving is a very important, this can be supplying to charity, giving of gifts to friends and family, presenting to your school or anything you can dream of. As long as everything you give brings joy to others who need it well over you. Next list what bad habits you have that you'll want to eliminate. Weather is be quitting smoking, spending a lot on junk, drinking too much, working too much, not paying out enough time with family, too much TV, not exercising and many more. We all have bad habits that need to be changed for use to grow as human beings. Under each of these bad practices list out some steps that you can take in order to give up them. If you bad habit is being lazy and not working out enough what can you do to change that. Well you can get the gym membership or a home work out program. Commit your body you following through with a plan to work out 3-5 months a week. For you to change these bad habits you have to be fully committed and follow through with a detailed plan you place for yourself. After you have your plans in place you should start list of several things you want to achieve or do in the next year. It is start a successful business, spend time with family, travel to 2-5 places and so on. Now under each of these you should also write find plan on what you need and what you need to do in order to achieve these aims. Finally you should take all of this information you have a write regarding page on what you see your life being over the next time. Doing this is a great exercise to really see what you want out of daily life.

You and Billy returned home the following day. You were still in disbelief that he had actually showed up in Vancouver just to talk to you, but the fact that he did made you remember why you loved him so much.

He was the one person in the world who never gave up on you, even if sometimes you felt like he should.

Every word that you had been too afraid to say to him had finally been said, and the forgiveness that you didn’t think you deserved had been given to you. You felt as if nothing could come in between the two of you, even when things seemed impossible.

You never thought you could be in this place again; with him, happy, loved… You chalked it up to your newfound freedom and sudden sense of accomplishment since you had removed certain people in your life. All you knew was that you would do everything in your power to never lose him again.

The two of you slipped easily back into your old ways easily. You’d spend your days together now that you were on break and he wasn’t working too much. You’d take turns spending the night at each other’s places; ordering takeout and just being together. He never brought up the things that you had done again, and you were grateful that he was willing to put all of that in the past and just move forward with you.

He spent a long time reading it over, flipping back and forth between the pages, and occasionally letting out frustrated sighs as he pushed his glasses up so that he could pinch the bridge of his nose.

“So, what exactly does this mean?” You asked, as he finally set the documents down to indicate that he was finished reading them.

“Did you not read the contracts that you signed?”

“I was young. A teenager…”

“You didn’t read them and you didn’t have a lawyer look over them,” he said.

“I- I didn’t know I had to. I think my mom had someone look them over,” you argued. “I was told that everything was in my best interest.”

She had told you that she would hire a team on your behalf. She was a smart woman who you assumed knew people and had your best interest at heart, if only to not make her look bad.

Over the years, you had realized that the people she had helping you through this were not out to help you benefit, but by the time you saw it, what could you do?

Still, you never imagined that she would purposely hurt you.

“What else does she have control over, Y/N?” Billy asked as he set the contract down.

You shrugged, blushing as he asked. You really didn’t want to tell him. You didn’t want him to know how stupid you were. “Tell me, so we can figure this out.”

Seriously, I’m not even all the way through this contract, but I can tell you that she made absolutely sure that if you ever decided to fire any of these people working for you, it would not go well for you.”

You stared at the ground, unsure of how to react to this. Not once had you ever read those papers. You had blindly allowed her to basically manage you without your knowledge and you really didn’t want to know more about what all of this meant for you.

“You need to read this,” he said firmly. “You need to understand it. I get that you were young and naive back then, but you have no excuse now.”

You sat across from him at the table, reaching out as he handed the stack of papers to you. He was right. You had been an idiot before and just assumed people would treat you with respect. It was time for you to know exactly what you had gotten yourself into and what the repercussions of firing everyone would do to you.

After a couple of hours of reading, and asking Billy a lot of questions on the things that you didn’t understand; which often resulted in him consulting with Rob who had a better understanding of the acting business and contracts in general; you sat there, feeling defeated and ready to cry.

“What does this mean?” You asked again.

“It means that if you choose to go through with letting everyone go and breaking this contract, you might be getting yourself into a bad situation.”

“So, my choices are; do what I’ve needed to do for years and in return be completely miserable; or, keep these people in my life, no matter how miserable they make me so I don’t lose everything?”

“It’s not even a decision, Y/N,” Billy replied. “You can't let them stay in your life like this. You can’t let them continue to have this power over you.”

“I break this contract, and they get everything. Is that what you’re saying?”

“I don’t know for sure, but that’s what it looks like,” he said honestly. “Look, I don’t know a lot about all of this. My advice would be to get real advice from a lawyer. You have a lawyer, right?”

“I do,” you replied.

“Do you have a lawyer that wasn’t hired by your mother?”

You frowned, realizing that everyone that your mother had surrounded you with were people that she handpicked. There was no way you’d be getting real help from anyone that technically worked for her.

“Maybe I need to find a different lawyer,” you stated.

He sat down across from you, his eyes meeting yours as he let out a drawn out sigh. Right away, you knew this was not going to be a good meeting.

You sucked in a breath and leaned back in your chair as you took a moment to let it all sink in. Of course. Of course this was happening right now. Not only was it almost impossible to remove that woman for your life, she had ensured that it would be financially difficult to so if you chose to walk away and cut ties.

No matter what you did, it was as if she was one step ahead, making sure that you suffered.

“Can I fight this?” You asked finally, praying that there was some sliver of hope that you could possibly win and walk away from this unscathed.

“Honestly, no,” he replied. “That’s your signature on the contract. It’s a legal document and it’s very well written. No stone was left unturned here to make sure that the people who work for you get theirs in the end.”

“What are my options?”

“That’s… that’s a lot of money,” you said, now trying to fight back tears. “A lot of money that I don’t have.”

“So, I can just sell my house, my car, all my stuff; and I can pay these fees and be done with it all?”

“Absolutely not,” you said sternly. “I can’t- I can’t let that woman control any part of my life anymore. I’ll do anything to get rid of her.”

Still, you had also worked so hard at becoming a stronger person; a person who could be on her own and who could make decisions for herself. In a way, you felt proud for still choosing to walk away. You figured the reality of it would come later when you were truly left with nothing.

You called Billy as you got into your car, asking him to meet you for lunch so that you could talk to him about what had happened.

He agreed and you took a deep breath as you hung up the phone, now focused on your next destination

Perhaps it wasn’t really a joking manner, after all, you were still trying to process the seriousness of it all. But, you couldn’t help but smile back at him. Maybe it was the fact that you felt some relief over being done with these people, even if it meant losing everything; or maybe it was the way that he sat across from you, that warm smile peeking out from behind that mess of a beard and those gorgeous eyes looking at you as if you were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Whatever it was, you felt okay. You honestly felt that, as long as you had him next to you, you’d be fine.

“And I guess you can sleep at my place tonight,” he added. “Not sure what you’ll do after that though.”

“I’ll manage. Anything I make now that I’m out of that contract is mine, I think. And, hey! I have actual friends now, I’m sure someone will give me a place to crash.”

What's ahead in the Bible readings for this week

The Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Catholic Proper 18, RCL Proper 13 August 2 to 8, 2018 The Eleventh Week After Pentecost

This week's image is Vincent Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Sheaves. Since so many of our readings have to do with bread (literal or figurative) I thought of Van Gogh's images. And it happens in my morning devotions from All Saints for July 29 was about Van Gogh. Here is a brief quote:

In the eyes of the world, and in his own eyes, Vincent Van Gogh was an utter failure. Though today he is one of the most popular and beloved of all modern painters, to his contemporaries he evoked nothing but contempt. He sold nothing in his lifetime. He spent his life in squalid poverty, preferring to spend what money he could obtain on paint rather than on food. But his failure never deterred him from dedicating every ounce of his strength to the expression of his person vision. For the sake of that vision, as much as any desert father, he was prepared to sacrifice every natural happiness. His subjects were not formally religious. They included sunflowers, wheat fields, and starry night skies. But ultimately his subject was the holiness of existence. It was that vision and not the quality of his sacrifice that defined the religious dimension of his art.

Gospel and Epistle Readings

The central Scripture for this week is Sunday's Gospel lesson from John. In it, Jesus tells the crowd that has followed him by boat to Capernaum, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” Then this exchanges happens:

“What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate manna in the wilderness; as it is written ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Then Jesus said to them “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in my will never be thirsty.”

The second Gospel reading for this week are from Matthew, in which Jesus tells his disciples to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees. As so often happens, they misunderstand their teacher, who is asking them to beware of the the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The third reading is a telling of the feeding of four thousand with seven loaves.

In a society where many go hungry, it is important to provide both physical bread and spiritual bread. Two of our Epistle lessons for this week are concerned with spiritual gifts. In Paul's letter to Ephesus he tells us that the gifts Christ gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. In the first letter to Corinth there is a similar list: apostles, prophets, teachers, deeds of power, gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, and various kinds of tongues. The variety of gifts that we have to give to the church and to the world is something to celebrate.

In the other Epistle readings this week, Paul scolds the church at Corinth for their divisions. He accuses the wealthy members of the church of showing contempt for the church of God and humiliating those who have nothing by leaving out those who have no food to eat. He urges them to examine themselves before eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord. This is a call to be aware of and confess the ways we have fallen short. Of course we must get up after our examination, receive the cup and the bread, and do better.

Complementary Series

The Hebrew Scripture for Sunday tells of the manna and quail provided by God to feed the hungry, wandering Israelites. The story of the quail is retold on Monday from Numbers. And on Tuesday we read part of a long speech from Moses to all Israel with this reminder: “He humbled you by letting you hunger, then feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by the word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Semi-continuous Series

This week completes the story of Bathsheba and David, at least in one sense. In another sense, the consequence of David's sin continues throughout his life. I find the death of Bathsheba's and David's son troublesome; Nathan declares, after David repents, that David will live but the child will die. This innocent child had nothing to do with the sin that was committed.

We also have the story of Tamar's rape by her half-brother Amnon. Once he has had his way with her, he will have nothing more to do with her. Absalom, her brother, kills Amnon in revenge for her rape. Violence begets violence. I don't think we should take this story as an example of how to deal with these situations. And it is hard not to have sympathy for Tamar and Absalom, seeking the only justice that could be found. (All of the people in this story are David's children, which may account for why Amnon was never punished.)

The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Complementary Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15 God provides manna. Not dead! Not an abandoned blog, either! This kinda happens from time to time, so lemme explain myself:

Did the read-more page-breaking thing so nobody has to scroll for eons if they don’t care to read...

Anyway, my absence. My mental and physical health have been absolute shit, and I’m starting to think I may have seasonal depression on top of situational depression as well since every damn winter I have no energy to do much of anything. But as this year progresses, I’m finding myself perking up some. My physical health is largely due to flare-ups (I haven’t been diagnosed but it’s strongly considered that I may have endometriosis; I need to get a laparoscopy to find out and currently cannot afford that, etc. etc. long story for another time) and lack of proper dieting and exercise. The flare-ups and shitty periods are why I can’t exercise when I’d like to, and we can’t always afford healthy food for strength and energy I need to do things (my metabolism is high enough to where gaining weight isn’t exactly an issue with me despite being almost 30). The worst of my pain occurs the first couple of days on my period, to which I have ultimately resorted to smoking marijuana which helps tremendously. The only time I use it off the rag is during an extremely bad flare-up, which are thankfully rare.

‘Kay... mental health... My husband and I still live with my parents here on the farm and it’s been stressful to the point where I’m getting anxiety-related chest-pains from time to time lately (long story-short: my parents---especially my dad---are assholes and even Loki said that no amount of magick can help them so I just rely on my wards in my room to have a safe haven). This and the fact that we may have a lack of proper oxygen in this house might be contributing to it. I plan on beginning my luck at growing pet-safe indoor house plants such as succulents and aloe vera to help with this after visiting a friend’s house whose mom pretty much has an indoor garden and realizing how much better I feel just being there for a few minutes.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about a topic relating to what this blog is about: Paganism, witchcraft, and being a Lokean.

Nope, still a solid Pagan with Druid beliefs and such, still a Lokean, but I haven’t practiced entirely too much witchcraft because there haven’t really been ways for me to use it where it’s needed. You can’t expect certain spells to work if you’re not doing anything to help it along (such as a job wouldn’t just fall into your lap because you still have to apply for a job). Money spells can get expensive if you’re doing it constantly for your spouse or parents because you’ll eventually run out of candles and such (I can’t do it without ingredients because I’m scatterbrained and need a damn decent point of focus and stuff).

I’ve got plans, though! I still haven’t invoked Loki for practice (which he’s cool with) so there’s that; I need to work out a ritual, and Loki says that for me, being short, sweet, and too the point is the best way to go. So I’ll be working something out with him in the (hopefully) near future. There’s also the fact that I plan to try out my green thumb and see about growing pumpkins and sunflowers. The sunflowers are to help with luck or prosperity or something on the property (honestly, I really wanna grow some out front to make the place look nice and having half a field of these flowers will be great for the faeries living there). The pumpkins are because I fucking love Halloween and love pumpkin pie and have a few recipes involving pumpkin I wanna try. I’d also like to try my luck at selling some, too.

While Loki tells me he isn’t associated with pumpkins, he sure as fuck likes to press the whole “come on, you know you wanna” bit onto me with growing them, and I’m getting this feeling that he’ll show up presence-wise whenever I go out to the pumpkin patch, so... Whatever, I’m gonna grow pumpkins because pumpkins are fucking awesome.

I’ll be asking the neighbor that owns the property across the street from us if I can do some bone-hunting and maybe a little bit of fossil-hunting. I still have the deer bones that my friend gave me that I need to wash, plus a dead young skunk I’m trying to decompose for bones, but winter makes this shit hard, so that’s part of my spring/summer activities. Loki wants me to try and articulate the skunk and have it mounted on a wooden platform and put onto his altar and I’m sitting here like: uuuuhhhhhh you don’t have much in a way of room... Regardless, articulating a mammalian skeleton will be beneficial in starting myself out in first-hand osteological studying, which is something you kinda have to know if you wanna be a paleontologist (which I do). I’m also interested in creating a staff involving animal bones, but I’m not sure what I’ll be using it for. If not for magick use, then it’d make for a great bring-along prop for a future druid character for D&D night (my husband and friends and I are just starting out with D&D because we haven’t been able to afford the books to play in the past, so we’re real excited about this).

Speaking of osteology, I plan on going to the museum with my husband and some friends in Pittsburgh and taking as many reference photos of all the fossil skeletons as I possibly can so I have decent and varied angles of the animals for reference when I practice to better my paleoart. I don’t wanna keep on using artistic renditions or limited angles of the same damn pics of fossils on the internet for references. I just need a decent camera, and I’m hoping my mom will stop acting immature and demand from a supposed friend that they give her her camera back. She has more authority to demand it back than I do, and I never talk to those people anyways, so it would make sense if she tried getting the damn thing back. Even though it’s sort of old, it’s still very high quality even for today’s standards and cost my parents nearly a grand to purchase. If not, my husband (who is extremely knowledgeable in technology and quality) can help me get a new decent camera (because my iphone sucks and his samsung phone can only hold so much memory for the amount of pictures I wanna take).

I do plan on doing more magick this summer, largely to help with learning a new instrument. While I do wanna properly learn the French Horn since I simply have the instrument, I need the proper mouthpiece (not sure if I’ve bitched about this in past posts), but every damn time I try to get the proper mouthpiece that I need, shit happens and I never get it. However... There’s a very strong possibility I could be learning how to play drums. I’ve always wanted to play but my parents did their damnedest to keep me from that thinking I’d just be annoying on drums. Turns out I’m quite proficient in terms of knowledge on how to play after a clerk at the local music store permitted me to play around on a drum set in one of the tutoring rooms because I paid very close attention to my band teacher helping the percussion section back in middle school. That knowledge stuck with me because I wanted to play drums so damn bad. So as it turns out, looks like I’ll be a drummer after all! It’d be a great way to help me stay in some upper-body shape and help relieve stress through movement while creating music. I’ll worry about starting a band later once I’ve actually become proficient in actually playing the drums, though.

Loki has made sure I stayed on the right path to where I don’t completely go on hiatus regarding creativity. I have a deviantART now if anyone is interested, and I’ve been working on some DIY punk clothing for myself. I’ll also be working on getting my hair how I want and learning how to apply makeup. It’s apparently time that I start expressing myself how I want now that I know what I’m doing. I’m going to go for a goth-punk look that I’ve always wanted since forever, just didn’t know how to achieve the look without spending a fuck ton of money (turns out that I never needed to in the first place).

Loki’s basically been trying to teach me to stop relying on the pendulum so damn much. Basically I have to accept that I’m not going to know everything and find some other coping mechanism unless I absolutely have to consult with a pendulum, otherwise he’s just going to lie to me to hammer the lesson into my head. I mean, his opinions? Fine, sometimes I can’t take a hint on my own, he knows it, and sees the pendulum being something that could work. But other stuff I won’t get into, he’s like, “Okay look...” He’s also apparently preferring that I use tarot readings in general divination than runes. I think it’s because the runes were a nice beginner’s way of helping me figure out the whole divination thing. I’ll Sometimes combine tarot with the pendulum if I’m not sure and very damn confused on certain things, but other than that, I’ve been getting the hang of it. I still need the handbook because holy dumbfuck, I can’t remember every little thing about every damn card.

Actually, this one tarot spread tried to basically tell me to compare what I’m going through to a caterpillar’s life and I’m currently in the pupa stage. Meaning: I’m working on the appearance that I want, and when I finally achieve it, something something butterfly/moth analogy. Of course, it isn’t narrating my whole damn life, just a part of my life.

Regarding art, I’ve been working with Kenaz, and that’s the rune I have on the Loki painting I may or may not have shared here sometime ago (I’m pretty sure I did but I’m too lazy to go get it so...) The painting has now been moved to a new part of my room (after rearranging shit for the millionth time) and it’s lined up to where it’s directly across from where I sit to do art. Ever since then, I’ve been able to dish out projects with higher quality than what I usually do at a faster rate. It’s just that lately, thanks to precipitation, I can’t do charcoal drawings for a while. Reason being is that I have to go to the outer garage to spray fixatif on it when I’m done and I need proper air circulation for that, and my windows aren’t meant to be opened... the architect of this house was a fucking idiot.

I am not entirely sure if I’ll be purchasing and reading anymore Pagan/witchcraft books for a good while, especially after being better informed, checking my amazon wish list, and finding out that some of the stuff I wish-listed is empty garbage because a lot of crud cranked out by Llewelynn tends to be garbage for money (note: I said “a lot,” not “all.”) But I do make purchases of incense from a small business witchy shop (they make their incense sticks). Lately, I’ve been focused on finding affordable boxes suitable for Bast’s, Thoth’s, and Cernunnos’ altars because my asshole cat likes to knock only the tiny shit off them. I’d also like to get proper statues for Bast and Thoth, too.

I’m also interested in making a smaller besom for general workings, and putting my bigger one up above the front door for protection purposes.

I don’t know how to end a ridiculous post like this, so that’s all I’ve got for now. I’m not disinterested, it’s just I don’t have a whole lot going for me, plus my health isn’t entirely the best right now. Take care, everyone!
