After graduating high school, Barry of course heads off to college. But in between is the summer holidays and Barry, of course, stays quite busy looking into the weird and the fantastic. This time it's an odd green light and Barry finds he isn't the only one investigating. A newly promoted 2nd Lt. Hal Jordan of the US Air Force is unofficially looking into things while on leave.

The two of them become fast friends and look for the source of the light. They don't really find anything about the light but they do solve a murder and find a cheap green ring with a lantern insignia. Probably a lost prize from a traveling fair, but Hal insists on keeping it as a reminder of the fun they had. They part, not really expecting to see each other again. But they do trade phone numbers to keep in touch.

Turns out that Hal gets reassigned to a base near Barry's college, however, just one year later. And they start spending more time together when Barry doesn't have classes or work and Hal isn't on duty. And somewhere along the way, they fall in love.

But it's 2009. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is still military policy. They can't tell anyone they're together, so they date in secret, because Hal thinks Barry's worth the risk. And while Barry isn't thrilled about the secrecy, he thinks Hal's worth it too.

Barry graduates very early with his BS and continues for his Masters but eventually he's headed back to Central City and Hal could get reassigned at any moment. So they try not to take the time they've got together for granted. And then 2011 arrives. Hal surprises Barry with the news that he got reassigned.

An assignment that Hal, in fact, put in for. Between his piloting skills and his recent promotion to 1st Lt., Hal got it. A test pilot position at Ferris Air, an airbase just outside of Central City. So when Barry graduates and returns home, Hal will be there too.

Because of this, Hal isn't able to attend Barry's graduation ceremony for his Master's degree, but neither of them care because they'd rather be together in Central City anyway. It's looking like DADT may go away soon, that Hal might be able to be openly bi with a boyfriend and not get discharged from the Air Force and they're both super excited about this.

Barry moves back to Central City, gets a job as an assistant CSI for the CCPD, and just weeks before September 20, 2011, the day they could have told everyone about their relationship... Hal disappears.

He was testing a new guidance system when something went wrong with his plane. What, exactly, is classified. All Barry can really find out is that Hal's body wasn't in the crash and the last the recording shows is a bright green light in the cabin.

Barry is devastated, of course. He'd loved Hal, he'd hoped maybe one day they'd even be able to get married.

He finally tells Iris and Joe about Hal, that Hal wasn't his weird air force friend... he was Barry's weird air force boyfriend. But there's not really much Barry can do but hold out hope that Hal's alive and lost and will come back one day. And keep on with his life until Hal does.

2012 isn't a great year. Barry's depressed about Hal and then the thing with Ralph Dibny happens around the anniversary of Hal's disappearance. 2013 is a little better. A little easier. Barry tries to move on and even tells Iris about his long time crush on her. While she doesn't reciprocate those feelings, they do both feel better for having cleared the air. And then just before Christmas... the accelerator at STAR Labs fails. Barry winds up in a coma.

Barry wakes up with super powers and it's great, but part of him still desperately wants to tell Hal. When he learns about Caitlin losing Ronnie, he opens up to her about Hal. He still wants to hope Hal's out there somewhere but... it's been three years now. So he gets what it's like to lose the person he loves and not even have a body left to bury.

But then Ronnie comes back and while he's half of Firestorm now, they're able to save him. Barry tells himself he's not jealous, but he wants a reunion like that. A chance to have Hal back in his arms again.

And then the reveal that Harrison Wells is really Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash, happens. Firestorm helps Barry fight, but the two of them aren't enough. And while Oliver and Ray promised to be there if they could, it's looking like they're not going to make it in time.

A green light strikes the earth right when things look the most dire for Barry. Flings the Reverse Flash away from him. A new player just arrived wearing a green suit and domino, an emblem on the suit of the chest matching the lantern Barry remembered from the ring Hal found all those years ago.

"My good luck ring," he'd called it later. "Because I was with you when I found it."

Barry'd teased Hal for being ridiculously cheesy, but he'd been flattered all the same. So he wasn't about to forget what it looked like even after the years between now and when he saw it last. Because not only was the emblem on the man's suit - it was on the ring his powers seemed to emanate from.

The Reverse Flash calls him the Green Lantern and treats him as an enemy, so Barry and Firestorm immediately accept him as an ally. Questions can come later. The three of them defeat the Reverse Flash soundly. And then, after Eobard is taken away to the pipeline cell intended to hold him, Barry pulls off his cowl even though this mysterious Green Lantern is still present.

"Hal?"

The domino disappears in a haze of green. "I'm sorry it took me so long to get home, Bar. Look at you. Red always was your color."

And time to cue the kiss. They'll figure the rest out later.
