it’s me again again

Emily/Hannah having a first date and Hannah is trying to make sure it’s the most romantic one ever (I’m talking candles, chocolates, the works)

"I've gotta ask," she started, and Hannah's heart leapt into her throat as she glanced up from her plate to see Emily staring - oh God - right where she'd hoped she wouldn't, her cheek in one hand and her glass of water perched like a fine flute of champagne in the other, "what's with the...I don't know, the stand?"

In her head, she ran through her options: (1) She could fib, say she didn't know what Emily was talking about, then immediately swing the conversation to something else in hopes she'd forget about it; (2) she could lie, say the platform had always been in the dining room, that it would always be in the dining room, that it was an eternal fixture the Washington family never talked about but also refused to part with under any terms; (3) she could do what she was doing right now and remain silent until things got so awkward she wouldn't have to worry about a second date; or - and this was the one she really wanted to avoid - (4) she could...

"There was supposed to be a string quartet," she blurted out, clamping her lips together a moment too late to save her poor, precious pride.

Across the table, Emily's eyebrows went up. "A string quartet?" she repeated slowly, gingerly setting her glass down, and ohhh Hannah felt her internal temperature spike up into the thousands.

"I just...I just really wanted you to have a good time, and I wanted to impress you, and - " she began, only to be oh-so-abruptly cut off when Emily took her hand from across the way and squeezed it tight.
