Writing Patterns
I was tagged by @incomprehensible-phasmid. Thank you! 💖
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
(So I don't actually have 10 published fics 😬 but well go with what I've got!)
It had been three months since the fight at the Zenith base. (New Horizons - Ereloy/HFW)
The sun was well on its way to the edge of the western horizon when Aloy landed in Hidden Ember. (Enough for Now - Ereloy/HFW)
“What about this one?” (Scars - Ereloy/HFW)
It was early evening, and the atmosphere inside the Base was surprisingly relaxed, for once. (Working Out the Kinks - Ereloy/HFW)
The trip was only supposed to have taken a day and a half. (The Smell of Snow - Ereloy/HFW)
A great many things have changed in the week since the revolution, for the world, and for humans and androids alike. (make me like a charm - HankCon/DBH)
There’s no one thing that sets Hank off. (I'm a wreck (and you're the first responder) - HankCon/DBH)
Worried sick. (You're Really in it Now, Kid - HankCon/DBH)
And as a little treat...not published, but something I'm working on😏
9. There is a road, one of many, which cuts across the Nebraska plains, wide and more well-traveled than some. (all roads lead to home - HankCon/DBH)
I don't know about any patterns, other than the obvious hyper-fixation fluctuations. I think as a rule, I try to vary up my opening lines according to the fic and the vibe. I like my HankCon fic titles better, generally, if only because they're funnier to me personally.
Pretty sure everyone I know has been tagged already, but if you haven't and you want to play, then consider this your tag!

The Dark Presence killed <♾️ versions of Warlin Door instantly. — Backstage (Alan Wake 2, Door/Various)
2. To my lustrous colleague, As far as Sathona is concerned, you are a “devil.  — eulogy (Destiny 2)
3. Eris’ old room at the Tower had been empty for years. — Nostos (D2)
4. Earth rumbled, sending stone skittering across the ice-cold hallway. — gesture activated (HZD, Aloy/Sylens)
5. When Saga fell into the Dark Place, the lights in the talk show studio were on. — if you can tap your foot to it (AW2)
6. “I can do this myself.” — Lauda Finem (Quantum Break drabbles, Martin Hatch/Various)
7. When the Guardians breach Oryx’s throne world, Ir Halak wonders whether she should warn Oryx her father. — Invasion (D1)
8. The practice was done, the drills over, the rewards earned. — the latest Destiny 2 drabble (Eris/Toland)
9. “I will not tithe to you,” said Toland the Shattered, and Eris Morn’s heart gladdened for it. — Ablution (D2, Eris/Toland)
10. The designer of Regional Control Center 9 had installed three doors between the wilderness and the workshop before the Faro swam ate the world. — Signal in Static (HFW, Aloy/Sylens)
Wow, weird that ten brings us exactly back to Signal. Mostly I'd call these opening lines "scene setting" as opposed to dialogue or pure prose. The best of all of them, I think, is Invasion's first line: the character, the setting and what the character wants are all established very quickly. The same is true of the opening line in Signal, but not unless you've read the rest of the series and know about how these people think about doors.

Weird Question, I Know
Does anyone have or is aware of any HZD/HFW crochet patterns or inspired patterns? I've seen one Aloy amigurumi, but not much else. And not even just amigurumi, like things inspired by various tribes and what not. I feel like either I'm missing it all or there's a huge amount of untapped potential here.

pattern art to get in the fall spirit and take up space while I do a life update. I've accomplished a few things, books, video games and then some life issues.
So easy stuff first I guess. I finished one of my goals of reading a Harry Potter book in spanish. I read the first book. It took me all year because it was a major brain fart/humbler. Reason why I chose HP was because its made for kids and it was familiar. I did NOT understand everything but luckily digital devices come equipped with a translation dictionary. About halfway through the book is when I had my first notebook with my art made. Whenever I get to book 2 my plan is to write down words that I had trouble with. There were 3 words in the first book that showed up frequently that kept confusing me but I didn't write them down haha. So I cant tell you.
I have a rant about another book I'm reading, Ill wait til I'm done
--games--
Secondly I finished playing Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West back to back. That took me..ages..when I first turned on HFW I was like "oh..thats the map..this is tiny" and well somehow I put double the man hours into the sequel than the original game with the DLC. Think I finished HZD in 50 or 60 hours after completing everything that game had to offer. 100% completion. HFW Id been playing for 90 and I didn't complete everything and just kinda said "eff this" and finished it. I like open world games. I'd play a third game, probably wont get to a dlc I dont generally do those on purpose.
My issue is though is I still don't like the character designs. I think HZD was the superior game. I kind of like the doom and gloom apocalypse back story and I like the idea of our modern life being somebody elses ruins. I like that. But everything else, the over story, the character designs..its like putting a jak and daxter style design on a serious story of The Last of Us. It didn't go. We needed to either choose if we were being serious or not. The sequel I enjoyed the gameplay but I think it suffered from being a sequel. Its getting too big for its britches. I dont like the space stuff. I dont like the immortality stuff.
so not my favorite game of all time but I'd play another.
I was playing disney dreamlight but I think Ill move on here soon to Ooblets to fill in time.
---
Lastly life.
--
My grandma died. It was not unexpected especially after seeing her for the final time a few weeks ago and I could tell she wasn't going to make it much longer. The thing that kinda bothered me or reassured me the most is..atleast gramma wasn't aware of what was going on. She's told me to my face how much the death of her siblings years before traumatized her and how she's afraid of dying. Really afraid we're all going to hell. If she could see herself on her deathbed she would absolutely freak out.
seeing her at the viewing again, was kinda sad. She just looked uncomfortable. People say "atleast now they're at peace" nah, gramma looked just as uncomfortable as when I saw her the other weekend. Its amazing how my brain remembers her from a few years ago and that viewing-experience just did not look like the gramma that I knew.
its just another phase of life coming to an end.
we've had it rough this past year. Husband lost his dad, we lost our cat at the same time and I've lost 2 grandmothers.
My work called me off the entirety of last week so I havent worked in over a week. Todays my first day back and I was asked to come in late. So I'ma have like..no paycheck..but whatever I guess.
so anywho I havent managed to be creative. I did manage to draw a bit yesterday so I may paint something but I dont know think it'll meet any sort of standard or expectation.

I just wanted to do a little comparison on some details of HFW's version of Vanasaha and Uthid, because I noticed right away that the circuit pattern was missing on her outfit, and I sort of thought his badges also looked different. But they don't, it's just that the silver contrasts way more in the HZD version. Beside some light differences of coloring and texture, it's basically the same. But I still miss that circuit pattern. It looked rad.

I thought about Horizon zero dawn and now I'm annoyed again.
Talanah being given a boyfriend is obviously part of a pattern of HFW aggressively sidelining non-white potential love interest for Aloy. The most egregious of which is definitely how Varl is set up as the like Hollywood boyfriend in HZD only to get a girlfriend off screen in HFW (Zo is great and if you say mean things about her i will kill you), and then dies at the end.
However Talanah falling for a FORMER SLAVE TRADER also feels like a slap in the face and complete misunderstanding of her character. Talanah's entire ethos is "if given the choice between doing evil, or dying, then you go out swinging"; her family used to be one of the most powerful in Meridian and they lost everything fighting to stop the slave trade, including most of her family members!
How am i supposed to accept that Talanah not only thinks hunting slave traders for sport is an objectionable idea, but also that she would have any sort of sympathy for his "boo hoo i was peer pressured and also just following orders."
Like she should have glowered through his whole "what was i supposed to do" spiel and told him he should have died like her brothers and her dad.

recurring characters and my problem with them
I think the thing that surprised me most about hfw was how MANY reoccuring characters there were. Not only our main characters (Varl, Erend, Sylens) and scattered throughout the game (Talanah, Petra, Nil) but also in the datapoints (Brin, Gildun, and probably more since I haven’t found all the data points yet), and those who were mentioned in text (CYAN, Vala, Rost, Sona) - and also the entire Alight section of the game where you can speak to Vanasha, Avad, Itamen, Uthid, and Nasadi.
I think this is because honestly I expected almost no crossover of characters, beyond Aloy/Gaia/Elisabet/Sylens and maybe Varl or Erend as the main supporting characters from hzd. And I wanted there to be familiar characters!! I wanted to see Aloy’s friends again! But the extent to which characters were brought over from hzd was shocking to me, especially when they only had light/meaningless development/contribution to the game. It ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth - where were the awesome Utaru and Tenakth NPCs? Why couldn’t the spotlight be given to someone new and interesting, with a vested interested and history relating to the area Aloy now finds herself in? While there were some new characters that I think were handled awesomely (Kotallo, Alva, Beta) there were also others that I wish got more spotlight (Zo, Regalla, Asera, Erik, Gerard) and also a pattern that I noticed as the game progressed: there was very little overlap of NPCs. With the increase of towns/tribes/areas/quests in hfw, this meant that there was probably about two dozen new NPC characters that just... were there. I didn’t get pumped up about any new character besides Alva, and by the end of the game I was bored listening the NPCs because I knew they would never appear again. I had no reason to give any emotional input because the game wouldn’t give me any payoff.
This was made all the worse because the characters that we did get were sometimes just... there. Why was Petra in this game? She was not involved in the quest line in the Daunt, besides randomly popping up at the end to take control voer the town. I was so excited to see her, but everything about her personality had been stripped away. It could have been anyone sitting in her place and nothing would have changed. Talanah had a Thrush when she first appears, but then that character is gone - why introduce her in the first place? What was the point? Another awesome point that could have been made about the Utaru and their developing need to arm themselves cut off for Talanah’s strange obsession with a man we’ve never heard of before. And to extend this - hzd often overlapped or eclipsed new hfw characters. Why was Zo hidden in Varl’s shadow? Almost every scene she was in, so was he, to the extent that I can barely characterise Zo when Varl isn’t present. That sucks! She had such potential as a rebel of her tribe, doing things a new way and seeing where no Utaru had seen before, and instead we pretty much only saw her relationship with Varl develop. Why was there such a focus on Sylens instead of the new villains that barely had a voice in the narrative, when the new villains were driving all the conflict and Sylens was absent for most of the game?
Idk maybe this was a me thing!! But side characters that I wanted to hear more about (Hekarro, Yarra, Penttoh, Dekka... and no Utaru because imo there was no effort put into that tribe to distinguish individual members!! Even Zo!!) just... weren’t elaborated on. Instead we got more characters. And more. And more. And more. Leaving no room or space for expansion of those that we got. Which really was a let down, because one of my favourite things about hzd was how every NPC felt like they had an entire, distinct, life and we were just seeing a snippet of it in their quest line. To have that fall through in hfw is frankly heartbreaking.

The ghosts are the original kids? On refreshing myself on how the first game went, it's interesting that this isn't confirmation of a "bad ending," exactly. Instead, it's a branch from one of the big choices, and an alternate ending where none of the endings happened, because time only looped once. Or at least, that's my interpretation. Time is moving outward in a spiral, options flashing off at intervals, but the loop never completed. Riley being pregnant is giving me flashbacks to HFW. They aren't positive. I am starting to put together the pieces of what this game is saying about generational behavior patterns, though. It's so much about her and her dad. Might as well also be about her and her kid.

Still Bothered
My friend recently started playing HZD (thanks to Steam having it on sale for ridiculously cheap) and watching them play through it has me thinking about the game and Forbidden West again. One thing keeps coming up, it bugged me when HFW came out, and it's still bugging me now.
The plants.
Why in the actual hell is there so little variety in the plants? HZD has SO many different plants scattered around the world. Plants I can identify at a distance because they are such an important part of the world. Plants that have observable patterns to where they grow most! And then there's HFW. A handful of disappointing plants, plopped in at random.
It's just so... uninspired and boring. It feels half-assed. So many of the things that make HFW a second thought and absolutely not my first choice when replaying games, really come down to the details. Which are either so half-assed, they actively annoy me, or are missing entirely.
Like jamming the fucking Hollywood sign in there and a taking down a Horus single handed weren't soulless additions that feel more like set pieces Londra came up with than anything like the excellence HZD gave us.
I don't know. It just makes me sad.

Always interested in your Horizon takes, so Call of the Mountain, maybe a little soon, but early impressions W or L? What do you think we'll see from it and how it will tie into the bigger Horizon world?
Still a little early to see what Horizon Only Hands (lol) is gonna shape up to be, but it seems intriguing! Gameplay video looked badass. I don’t have too much experience with VR, so getting to figure that out could also be neat.
I’m also into the idea of a new main character—even if I very much wish Guerrilla would’ve leaned into the female main character pattern for this series.
But considering how we’ve seen Ryas teased in HFW—I think it would be really cool if Call of the Mountain was a parallel story to Zero Dawn. This would make sense, given Marad’s allusions to the Derangement in the trailer, along with the timeline of Ryas being released from Sunstone Rock sometime after the Liberation. GG said we’d be meeting Aloy (and others), so what if we crossed paths with her during her HZD journey? What if Call of the Mountain also somehow culminates in the Battle of Meridian? I think that’d be really nifty storytelling.
Will definitely be looking for more news as we get it!

Harajuku Outfit Ideas 5
I got an ask recently about how to style the kind of clothes found on Wego. So after looking through the sites, I found a similar style of button down shirt that I’ll base this set on; since I don’t have items from these stores.
This is a shirt I made some months ago.
Tumblr media
♔ Black + Pink
Tumblr media
This first look here is one that makes use of a pink turtleneck layered with the black button down and paired with a zebra print skirt. I accessorised it with a handful of pins, a pink fan, a clear belt and some holographic shades. It also has a hat and a purse to go with it and I’d suggest pairing it with some knee-high pink socks and black shoes.
This is a very basic look and it requires a lot more accessories for it to be more harajuku, but something like this is a good start.
My suggestion is to lean towards a more neo-gyaru aesthetic, so blonde/light coloured hair and dramatic eye makeup, and even though heels are common, if you’re wearing this for the HFW, just wear a good pair of matching sneakers or boots instead.
Another suggestion is to make it a little more pop kei and instead of soft pastels, go with lots of bright colours, polka dots, mismatching socks and even throw on a denim vest and some really chunky shoes. For hair and makeup, go with bright, almost neon colours and brightly coloured hair.
♔ All-over print
Tumblr media
This is another idea that makes use of small but all-over prints as the basis for the outfit. Using the black button down as a base, layer over a printed dress/jumper/overalls in matching colours and a pair of printed socks or stockings.
For this specific look, I added a scarf tied around the neck that has a striped goldfish print, and using this print to tie together other elements such as matching the colour of handbag and shades.
If you use this look, which is largely monochrome with pops of colour, Try and keep the colour to the accessories only. This will help prevent the look from becoming messy or overwhelming.
Again, this is a basic look and it requires more accessories to make it more harajuku. So my suggestion is to add gloves and lots of chunky bracelets as a start and build the look from there. For makeup, I’d suggest something that matches an accent colour, which in this case, is orange. So glossy orange lips and eye makeup, and coral coloured blush.
Alternatively, this look could go all colourful, and be pushed towards a more decora-ish style, so with a brightly patterned shirt under a colourful jumper and bright socks or stockings. Or it could go a more pastel, cult party kei route and you could add on a sheer outerwear to finish off the look.
❀❀❀
There are many more possibilities with a button down shirt like this! It really all depends on what sub-style you’re going for or what kind of aesthetic you want to portray.
As always, remember to read up on your sources and look into the details of the coords you see. Because really, the details can make or break your outfit. Accessories, makeup and hair are all key things that shouldn’t be overlooked and there needs to be attention and effort put into these things too! Just kawaii clothing items won’t be enough if the accessories and details are missing.
Good luck and feel free to drop me an ask for any further questions!
