the thing about the Johto games is that not only are they extremely misogynistic in the text they are also extremely misogynistic in the code. the first two gens of pokemon were very misogynistic in various ways that I see very few people ever point out. starting in gen three they decided to start to chill out a bit but it was still there. I'd like to say that over time they got *much* better. but that doesn't mean they were always perfect. or I don't know maybe I'm just too woke

Misty has so many designs. And I traced all of them. I always liked her HGSS design, shame it never shows up.

Its canon that the Protag of GSC/HGSS not only called two Twins 'babies' on the SS Anne to get them to battle them but also challenged an entire biker gang by (I'm guessing) implying they were going to stomp them into the ground. They also intentionally interrupted Misty's date to ask her for a battle on the spot.
They were on a fucking tear in Kanto.

Pokemon Team Characterization - Bugsy
The little bug professor is, I feel, an often overlooked gym leader. Which is sad! I think in the GSC days it was understandable, the team really doesn't exude much, but I actually really vibe with the HGSS team. Though admittedly, I always kinda liked Bugsy. Obviously. I am a Johto whore, Johto's probably going to behte first region I finish with these writeups despite doing an average of like one a month. But Bugsy always sort of stuck out to me in a weird way that...actually, yeah, I'm talking about this.
I imagine like many others, I also thought Bugsy was a girl as a child. And you know what? I liked it better that way. The anime was so up its own ass with the whole "girls don't like bugs" thing with Misty, that having a girl character who not only didn't fear bugs but loved them so much she was studying them Oak-style and invented their own move to use was really cool. Not to mention, the whole scout aesthetic felt a lot more analogous to a tomboy aesthetic to me than anything Misty was trying to do. Anyway, Bugsy should be a girl.
Tumblr media
Oh COME ON! The team is all Female?! Do you know how rare that is?! They almost always have genders of Pokemon match the trainer. I know the GSC team is all male, but HGSS clearly saw my vision. The rematch team is also all female. Actually speaking of rematches, I'm not doing rematch teams anymore. They're kinda boring! It's almost always just giving the team maximum hyper offense moves. I don't really respect it, and sometimes it actively ruins the vibe, Clair HGSS.
As for why I'm doing HGSS and not GSC: as much as I like using the original incarnation as intent, Bugsy, like Clair, is supremely limited in his access to like. Actual moves. Bug moves basically didn't exist until Gen 3. So Bugsy's team is just extremely generic, and kind of have nothing to seriously analyze, barring one trait which I will absolutely be talking about.
Both Ace and Lead (Scyther) Scyther is the entire reason this team is so fun to fight. The ace Pokemon is also the lead; do you know how rare that is? Basically unheard of. They used it to show U-Turn, which I adore, because it actually does pack a wallop. Absolutely deranged power being thrown around with that move. But hey, if that's not enough, how about Quick Attack for priority, Leer to debuff your defenses if you can otherwise survive, Focus Energy for crit rate, and Technician to boost Quick Attack even further? Are you feeling it now?
This is wholly independent of the analysis, but I adore this because it feels like the perfect refutation of old anti-Johto sentiment. "Oh so stupid, why isn't it Scizor, Johto leaders are bad and the devs are ashamed of Johto Pokemon." Bite me. Watch Bugsy kick your ass harder than Gardenia ever could off a not-fully-evolved bug-type.
Focus Energy is the big tell: Bugsy is someone with a laser focus on their interests and ambitions. They're someone who pursues things with tremendous zeal, given the priority inherent in Quick Attack, and has an analytical mind for breaking down obstacles given the Leer approach. U-Turn as the focal move is also really interesting, suggesting an ability to change perspective and flexibility with thinking. Of note, the original TM move in Fury Cutter also has a lot of significance, given the increase in power with repeated use, signifying growing ability through single-minded devotion. I do like that aspect of the original team, admittedly. Technician is also really fun, because it's about drawing out power of something weaker, which is how the Bug type in general works, and specifically boosts Quick Attack, his tendency to press advantages.
The Others (Metapod, Kakuna) The Cocoons, by contrast, do...nothing? They have one (1) move, in their offensive move. This is somehow better than the GSC moveset, where they also had Harden and String Shot to do literally nothing to anyone. So what are they doing here?
Okay, note that Bugsy's team is not fully evolved, despite the fact they're of a high enough level to evolve. What's that about? My guess is that Bugsy is still studying these particular bugs, trying to find out what exactly they can do in their full capacity. The decision to remove non-damaging moves that tend to do nothing also implies that his focus is on battling as well. He's studying their abilities, and while those are limited, he still does what he can with them to pursue success. Given their likely failure, Shed Skin feels emblematic of an ability to kind of "shrug off" failures or setbacks, and get back to his purpose easily.
General Team Impressions There's not much. I already mentioned the whole "not fully evolved" thing. It's really the only note available.
Conclusions Bugsy, the young bug professor, is someone who is very thorough in his methodology. He keeps his bugs in their weaker form past the level they can evolve at, in order to fully assess their capabilities. He makes every attempt to draw out the best potential of his bugs, and is able to recover quickly from setbacks and failure. He's single-minded and dedicated to his craft, and seizes on any opportunity to advance his studies. Despite the fixation, he's able to shift his thinking to make discoveries.
At least, that's how I read him. If you have a different read, feel free to share. Honestly, Bugsy gets so overlooked it's a little sad, I think people should talk more about Bugsy.

I've been thinking of ideas for a hypothetical reboot of Ash and Pikachu's journey focusing on the Original Series, and one of them is adding a Johto Trainer to the main cast for the GS chapter with a subplot involving the Pokéathlon from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver, similar to the Pokémon Contest subplots from the Advanced Generation and Diamond & Pearl series.
I haven't decided on the Trainer yet, but I got three possible candidates for the role.
Tumblr media
I know that Ash and Lyra didn't meet until Sinnoh, but as long as I'm including elements from HGSS into the GS chapter, I may as well add her into the mix. Ash has traveled with female player characters who also appear as NPCs if unchosen in Hoenn (May), Sinnoh (Dawn) and Kalos (Serena), so Lyra would be no different other than participating in athletic competitions instead of being stereotyped into Contests or its sexist knockoff.
Lyra does have her own Chikorita, but maybe I can justify both her and Ash having one if one of them fully evolves while the other one doesn't. But then again, there might be a risk of having too many Chikorita users if Casey and Jackson/Vincent stay. If I add her friend Khoury into the mix as a recurring character, then this would also mean more time to properly develop their relationship if I decide to pair them up.
Tumblr media
Casey has been compared to Ash in his early days of Pokémon training, albeit with different styles of training and different tastes in Pokémon, so by adding Casey to the main cast, Ash could serve as a mentor to her throughout the GS chapter. And given that she's a fan of a sport as well as her sporty outfit, I don't think she would be out of place in athletic competitions like the Pokéathlon.
Alternatively she could act as a recurring rival not only as a Trainer, but also as a Pokéathlete. Either way, she deserved better in the Original Series so this would be a good way to remedy it. The same applies to the final candidate.
Tumblr media
With the Kimono Girls appearing outside the dance theater in HGSS, it only makes sense for Sakura to meet Ash's group earlier in Johto. What inspired the idea of her being a Pokéathlete was the fact that one of the Kimono Girls, Kuni (Sumomo/Komomo), was one of the Pokéathlon participants at the Pokéathlon Dome in the Johto remakes, specifically the Skill Course in the Supreme Cup.
The mentor thing I mentioned regarding Ash and Casey would also apply to Sakura in addition to spending more time with Misty. The only caveat with this one is that I'm considering adding an Espeon to Ash's Johto team which would clash with Sakura, so either her own Eevee doesn't evolve throughout the GS chapter (in which case another older sister would have to be added to fill in the gap), or keep her as a recurring rival for either the Gyms or the Pokéathlon.
And those are my choices for an additional Johto companion. Let me know what you think.

Which Eeveelutions are most popular among NPCs?
On today's edition of Useless Pokémon Stats: I gathered data of the used Pokémon by all major NPCs (rivals, gym leaders, villains, and any other important story figures) and scanned them for Eeveelutions to see which mons are the most common.
Read on to find out which characters have Eevees!
The least-used Eeveelution is unsurprisingly the one who's the most newly added: Sylveon.
Shauna has a Sylveon on her team in XY.
It is also Gym Leader Valerie's signature Pokémon.
Bede adds Sylveon to his team once he switches to being a Fairy-type Trainer.
And of course, Penny has one. You're gonna get tired of seeing her on these lists, because she has every Eeveelution except for Espeon & Glaceon.
Next let's look at Vaporeon, who has six NPC trainers:
Misty has a Vaporeon on her team when rematched in Let's Go!
In Pokémon Yellow, Blue will evolve his Eevee into Vaporeon if the player loses both of the first two rival battles.
Calem or Serena (as the rival) will have a Vaporeon if the player chose Froakie as their starter.
Hau will have a Vaporeon if the player chose Litten.
Adaman has a Vaporeon in Legends: Arceus.
And Penny has one on her team as well.
Tied with six trainers is Umbreon.
Karen has an Umbreon on her Elite Four team.
Greta of the Hoenn Battle Frontier has an Umbreon in both Symbol challenges, so it's arguably her signature Pokémon.
Cheryl can use an Umbreon in the Battle Tower in all Gen IV games.
Buck has an Umbreon on his team at the Battleground.
Adaman has an Umbreon...
...and so does Penny.
And finally, also tied with the above is Leafeon.
Gardenia has a Leafeon in all of her B2W2 World Tournament teams.
Buck can have a Leafeon in the Battle Tower.
N has a Leafeon in B2W2 during the Summer battle at his castle.
Hau will have a Leafeon if the player chose Popplio.
And Adaman...
...and Penny too.
Interesting that Adaman has all of the less popular ones...
Anyway, moving up one NPC with Jolteon:
Lt. Surge uses a Jolteon in the B2W2 World Tournament, as well as during rematches in Let's Go!
Blue can have a Jolteon in Yellow if the player wins both early rival encounters.
Trace will always evolve his Eevee into Jolteon in Let's Go! Kinda wish they had kept the mechanic that Yellow used, but oh well.
Volkner has a Jolteon in Platinum, the game where his gym team actually makes some damn sense.
Marley can have a Jolteon in the Battle Tower in Platinum & HGSS.
Calem/Serena will have a Jolteon if the player chose Chespin.
And Penny! (the schuyyyler sisters)
Also in a tie is Glaceon:
Lucas will have a Glaceon in BDSP if the player chose Turtwig.
Candice has a Glaceon in her rematch battle in Platinum.
Cynthia has a Glaceon on her team in Black 2 & White 2.
Mira can use a Glaceon in the Battle Tower in all Gen IV games.
N uses a Glaceon in the Winter battle at his castle.
Sina has a Glaceon in Pokémon Moon & Ultra Moon, as well as in the Battle Tree in Sun & Ultra Sun.
And Irida has a Glaceon in Legends: Arceus.
And finally, we have two Pokémon in a tie for first, both with eight known trainers. The first is Flareon.
Blaine has a Flareon in the B2W2 World Tournament.
Blue will have a Flareon in Yellow if the player only wins one of the first two rival battles.
Lucas uses a Flareon if the player chose Chimchar.
Flint has a Flareon in Platinum, the game where he doesn't have a friggin lopunny for NO REASON
Calem/Serena uses a Flareon if the player chose Fennekin.
Hau uses Flareon if the player chose Rowlet.
And Irida...
...and Penny!
And tied with it is Espeon.
Red has an Espeon when challenged on Mt. Silver.
Sabrina uses an Espeon in for her gym battles in GSC.
Lucas will have an Espeon if the player chose Piplup.
Lucian has an Espeon on his team in Platinum.
Cheryl can use an Espeon in the Battle Tower.
And so can Mira.
Dexio has an Espeon in SM & USUM.
And Irida has an Espeon in LA.

💙: Which character is not as hot as everyone else seems to think?
💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
Ask game: unpopular opinion edition <3
...I'm going to ignore the fact that I'm asexual and I have a weird rating blindness situation, but some of y'all desperately need glasses.
💙: Which character is not as hot as everyone else seems to think?
EVERY MALE PROTAGONIST FROM GENERATIONS 1-5. YES, ALL SIX OF THEM
They're the SAME FUCKING PERSON. Heck, Calem barely looks distinct.
But also
Gardevoir. I don't get it. Like, I get it on a meta level but I don't get it.
Lopunny. I see it on that like, kinda playboy magazine level, but it's... it's just a rabbit. Dawg. I swear people saw the pose in Generation 4 and assumed boobs on it.
Volo. Sorry. He's not attractive. Y'all just insert Cynthia traits on him where it doesn't belong. Either that or y'all masochists. Not kinkshaming, but that man ain't it.
N. That's it. Not elaborating. Just N.
Piers. I get it, but ig not for me.
Clair. Never saw it. She's really garish, and she's a dick to boot. Pass.
Delia Ketchum. Even with the mommy kink advantage, she's a 5 at best. Johanna and Grace are so much hotter.
Ingo / Emmet. Yeah no fam. I don't see it.
Wallace. He looks good, but not nearly as good as people say he is, both RSE and ORAS.
Steven. His dad is hotter.
Goodra? THIS SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE BUT YOU'D BE SURPRISED AT WHAT PEOPLE ADMIT TO YOU OVER TIME. I DON'T SEE IT
Giovanni. I get it, but no.
Silver. See above.
Malva. No. Y'all got bad taste
Lysandre. Absolutely not.
Diantha. She's a 6 at best. Y'all just were clamoring for another Cynthia again.
Larry is funny but he is NOT attractive. He's a 5 and that's okay.
---
💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
-cracks knuckles-
LENORA. Ya'll can't see a beautiful, lovely black momma if she smacked you in the face.
Blaine. Listen, I don't like bald that much and I don't like old men that much but HGSS Blaine can get it.
Erika. Like, I know there's SOME eyes on her, but when it comes to Kanto girls, I swear she gets passed up over Sabrina and Misty.
The Kimono Girls. I had a crush on them as a kid, okay? That crush kept going over time.
Drayden is a Zaddy and is the best-looking man of the first 5 generations. Fight me.
Drasna. Dragon GILF. Need I say more?
Jacq. Mi esposo <3
Diancie is so fucking underrated that it's not even funny.
Magearna too.
Of all things, this is going to put me on a sus list but... Celesteela. There's some, but there's not nearly enough. Not nearly enough for that.
Raifort is the most attractive person in Generation 9 bar none (yes, even more than Jacq). If you think otherwise, you're wrong.
Hydreigon can give me triple the fun and I'd still come back for more (shot)
