The Seafloor Citadel

Characters featured: Larimar Yttri (he/him), Camryn Aeran (she/her), Ne'las Andromedes (they/them), Baya Sayonna (any), Hack, Slash, Rip, Tear (all she/her)

The Triplet Spirits & co. were running out of time. They would perish any day now, due to the cursing wounds the Scourges laid upon them. They built the Seafloor Citadel to sustain them as they looked for ways to make their seals on the Scourges last long enough for the next generation of Triplet Spirits to take care of them, as well as to house the seals themselves to keep them undisturbed and intact.

The citadel, whose architecture is a joint work by Larimar, Ne'las, and Baya, is built four miles underground. It has a multi-layered architectural-glass dome that sticks out of the seafloor (hence the name Seafloor Citadel) with a view of a luminescent reef in the hadalpelagic zone. Larimar spent his final hours inside this dome, writing a final entry in his journal.

Despite the tragic, premature deaths within its walls, the Citadel was successful at fulfilling its goal, allowing the seals on the Scourges to remain strong for nearly half a century, just long enough for the next Triplet Spirits to eliminate those anomalies once and for all.

Biography: Coco was born in the forests of Northern California to Orion and Celeste Nova. The couple were refugees from a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, hidden away by powerful magic. The island was called Andromede by its inhabitants, which were an offshoot of the cult that bred powerful warriors for the gods(the same cult that the Cage family’s ancestors were from). Instead of continuing the cult’s tradition of breeding and training powerful warriors for the Elder Gods, the small sect of the cult left said cult to worship a specific pantheon of deities, and were blessed by these gods, who gave them powers directly. The power was given through a direct ritual where the god was “drawn down” into the person’s body, briefly merging with their soul and imparting the power of their choice. Because of how dangerous this could be, this ritual was only done on those whose souls could withstand the merger, and therefore wasn’t done on anyone younger than the age of fifteen.

While Celeste was still pregnant with Cora, Shang Tsung and his forces assaulted the island, determined to take the Gods’ powers for his own. However, these powers did not extend to Shang Tsung as he took his first soul of Andromede’s people; in retaliation, he razed the island to the ground in anger. Celeste and Orion were one of a small handful who managed to escape, and they made their way to America after doing so.

Corona had a brief amount of time with both of her parents, learning how to live off the land and defend herself as well as learning her culture at a very young age, but sadly Orion passed protecting the family from bandits when Celeste was still pregnant with Callisto, Coco’s younger sister. Celeste passed when Calli was only a few years old, sending both the girls to a nearby orphanage. Before her passing, Celeste asked Coco to take good care of her younger sister, to keep her safe and give her a chance at a normal life, whatever that may be.

Cora and Calli spent a few years together at the orphanage, keeping away from the other children for the most part, since they were teased a lot for their naturally light hair and lack of knowledge of modern ways of life. However, when Corona was eleven and Calli was eight, a family decided to adopt the two. Coco could tell quite quickly this was not a beneficial arrangement, and managed to convince the family that Calli was not “worth” adopting, lying and saying that the girl was more trouble than she was worth. This deception broke Cora’s heart to do and absolutely devastated the soft-hearted Calli, but it worked; the family decided to adopt Corona alone, and the two were separated for the first time in their lives.

(TRIGGER WARNING FOR MENTIONS OF CHILD ABUSE AND CSA IN THE NEXT TWO PARAGRAPHS! PLEASE BE MINDFUL IF YOU ARE TRIGGERED BY SUCH THINGS!!!!)

The family that adopted Coco was the same family that adopted Izumi Tanaka after the housefire that killed her parents(that she caused, though nobody knew this). The father of the family was one of the members of Tanaka Industries board of representatives, Izumi’s family-owned company. The man was wicked and abusive, putting both of the girls through terrible abuses of many kinds. He had a particular type of abuse he enjoyed inflicting on Cora: he would starve her for days at a time, and when she was finally fed food, it would be unsuitable for eating(moldy, cleaning supplied added into the food etc). This would give her a lifelong trauma related to food.

One night after particularly harrowing abuse in which Izumi was sexually assaulted and Corona was being tortured via drowning(her face being pushed into a sink of water and held there), while her head was underwater, she prayed to her family’s gods for anyone to help save her and help her destroy the terrible man responsible for these deeds. She did not expect any answer, but her prayers were answered by a god of vengeance by the name of Zatounin. He merged with her soul, although she was not nearly old enough to safely do so, and took over her body while she was blacked out, violently murdering the man and the rest of the family(minus Izumi, who was merely a victim), who knew the abuse was happening, but did nothing to stop it.

When Coco came to, she awoke to blood around her and was terrified. Zatounin and Izumi herself managed to calm her down, with Izumi explaining she was already planning to murder the family, but with Cora’s actions having saved her the trouble. She stole some money from the family safe and gave it to Corona, telling her to run away and hide, explaining she would make up a story that a random assailant committed the murders and kidnapped Cora, to protect her. She also made a promise to the other girl, that once she was old enough, she would be in charge of her family’s company, and she would make sure that Coco would never want for anything again.

Coco left that night, and found that because of Zatounin’s interference before she was old enough to properly merge souls, his soul was now fused to hers. He would be with her forever now, until her dying breath, as her protector. She made her way back to the orphanage that she was sold from, and found that Calli was still there, being protected by another child: a quiet boy by the name of Sascha. She decided that Calli was safer there than on the run, on the streets with her, and so she spent the next few years homeless, becoming a thief and working odd jobs to survive.

When Cora was fifteen, she found that she was making enough money with multiple jobs(and fake IDs claiming her to be older than she was) to get a place of her own. In the dead of night, she came back to the orphanage for her sister, and they tearfully made up and reunited, with Calli leaving the orphanage to live with Corona, and Sascha coming as well. The trio lived a quiet life for many years, with Sascha and Coco working multiple jobs to keep food on the table to provide some sense of a normal life for Callisto, who attended school like a normal girl her age. During this time, Calli was able to perform the Drawing Down ritual at the correct time, receiving powers from a Goddess of protection by the name of Ahksana.

When Cora was nineteen years old, Izumi managed to find the girl, having become the CEO of her family’s company and ready to finally fulfill her promise. Coco began to work directly under Izumi, while still living with Calli until it was time for her to go off to college(which was all paid for by Izzy). She and Sascha became the heads of what Izumi called her Specialty Team, a group of assassins and “fixers” that weren’t known to the public at large but helped Izzy with sensitive missions to continue to gain power, money, and influence. Corona’s darkness powers were especially helpful for these missions, allowing her to quickly and stealthily neutralize her targets, though she did not and would not kill unless it was strictly necessary. She took the codename Siren, for her love of singing and her tendency to hum or sing constantly while working(she just genuinely likes to sing AND it freaks people out! win-win for her)

At one point, in Izzy and Coco’s early 20s, the CEO struck a private deal with the Black Dragon to take out an arms dealer that both companies were unhappy with. Cora was forced to work with a pre-burn Kabal, and the two ended up warming up to each other, with both of them developing feelings for each other. However, Kano ended up double-crossing Izumi, and Siren was forced to fight the entire Black Dragon trio on her own to prevent them from leaving Tanaka Industries with blueprints Kano had stolen. She managed to defeat Erron Black and Kabal(unhappily), but lost to Kano, with him tricking her into thinking she had won, and then surprise stabbing her when she approached him to retrieve the stolen documents. They were able to escape, and Corona was left with a large scar under her collarbone for her efforts.

When Coco was in her mid-twenties, she was able to take time off for her and Callisto to make a return to their ancestral home of Andromede. The two were shocked to discover there was still a small community there, lead by the lone remaining Elder of the village, a woman by the name of Astrid Rigel. Calli left a day before Cora did due to college obligations, and therefore did not meet Astrid’s adoptive son, a man by the name of Aten Vela. Corona and Aten connected quite quickly, and started a relationship soon after, with both promising to help restore Andromede to its former glory.

However, this was all deception on Aten’s part. The young man was secretly hoping to restore Andromede for his own selfish purposes, to become its ruler and eventually take over Shang Tsung’s mantle and power. He was also quite manipulative and emotionally abusive to Coco, forcing her to keep their relationship secret from everyone, including her family, and cheating on her almost the entire relationship. She found out about eight months into the relationship and it quickly dissolved, after catching Aten cheating and him gloating about how easy she was to manipulate. She snapped, beating the absolute snot out of him, with Zatounin eventually taking over and preparing to kill the man. Cora had to actively fight Zatounin’s control so he wouldn’t do so. She returned to Tanaka Industries, defeated and despondent.

A few months later, her friend Saiyaka took her and another friend by the name of Cash Black aside and told them something shocking: Siren’s ex, Aten Vela(under the codename Charon), was the one who had shot Cash twice in the head, nearly killing her. The three of them realized that he had to be stopped lest he actually kill innocent people, and in order to do so, Cash and Coco would have to temporarily stay at the Black Dragon headquarters. Because of this, Cora would gain the opportunity to reconnect with her old flame, a post-burn Kabal, as well as challenge Kano to a fair(er) fight, to restore her lost honor.

Personality: Corona is a very closed-off individual due to her rocky upringing. She is very wary of strangers, choosing to not speak often in front of them, as well as wearing a face mask around them. She comes across as rude, grumpy and uncaring because of this, but that is more of her walls, than the real her. Once Coco gets to know someone, she is very kind, always wanting to help them and take care of them in whatever way she can. She is also a very active person, loving to sing and dance, as well as enjoying things like yoga and roller derby, though she doesn’t have time for the latter as much as she’d like. She tends to be quite emotional as well, angering easily and being prone to crying at the drop of the hat. For all her barriers to keep others out, she’s also a terrible liar and unable to hide her true emotions.

Tropes:

Be Careful What You Wish For: For the longest time, Coco dreamed of returning to Andromede, falling in love with someone there, and rebuilding her ancestral homeland. Her time with Aten and Astrid showed her that was largely a pipe dream.

Beneath the Mask: It takes Coco a while to get used to people she doesn’t know, and she puts on a decent front of pretending to not care about others on the surface. Once someone gets past that, it quickly becomes obvious that she’s a kind and caring individual, even though she has an odd way of showing it at times.

Bad Liar: Sucks ass at lying. Becomes very obviously uncomfortable when trying to do so. Especially clear when she’s trying to lie about her feelings for others(namely Kabal), as her face turns bright red and she attempts to “hide” behind her wild mass of curls.

Bad Powers, Good People: Coco is skilled at hand-to-hand combat all on her own, but the majority of her strength comes with being fused with a god of vengeance. This manifests in shadow/darkness powers. Despite all that and Coco’s icy exterior, she is committed to doing right by people where she can, and showing kindness to others who need it.

Berserk Button: Do NOT threaten her little sister if you feel like keeping all your limbs. Threatening Sascha and Izzy will enrage her as well, but Calli is her number one Berserk Button.

Dark and Troubled Past: She went through absolute hell as a child, and much of her teens and young adulthood was spent making sure Callisto didn’t have to go through similar things, and could live a normal life.

Defrosting Ice Queen: If you’re not a shitty person, and you spend enough time around her, you’ll witness this in real time.

Doomed Hometown: Coco’s ancestral hometown of Andromede is destroyed by Shang Tsung prior to her birth. She grows up with a dream to return and bring the town back to its former glory, but her time with Aten crushes that dream, and speaking further with Astrid(the remaining town Elder) confirms that there just aren’t enough of their people for this to ever truly happen.

Elective Mute: Chooses to speak as little as possible around people she’s unfamiliar with. This is largely for two reasons: 1), as a way to protect her family, specifically Callisto(the less she speaks the less she can accidentally let slip she has a little sister that can be used against her), and 2) as a means of intimidation toward others. Is actually quite the chatterbox once one gets to know her.

Hurting Hero: Coco is the type of person to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. She and Izzy frequently butt heads about this, and it results in Siren not running certain missions for Izzy because they are not morally on the up-and-up. She is also an angst factory.

I Just Want To Be Normal: She never wanted to have her soul fused with an ancient vengeance deity, nor go through all she went through. As much as she loves her younger sister, she is more than a little jealous that Calli had a chance at living a normal life than she did(especially when Calli becomes an Earthrealm defender, which Coco initially sees as throwing that life away).

Love Martyr: During her and Aten’s relationship. She tries her hardest to show him that being kind is its own reward. He returns the favor by completely breaking her heart and ruining her trust in others even further.

Pintsized Powerhouse: Coco stands at a very short 5′3″. She was also able to take out 2/3rds of the Black Dragon trio on her own, and might have taken out all three of them if Kano had played fair.

Terror Hero: She absolutely leans into her darkness powers and stony personality to scare her enemies and break down their defenses. If she can defeat a foe through scaring the shit out of them, as opposed to having to kill them, she will happily do so. Unless they’re a threat to others, of course, but she doesn’t like to kill regardless.

The Cowl: Spent her homeless years as this, defending innocent people with Zatounin’s powers and teleporting away before anyone could spot her.

Knight In Sour Armor: Coco is very prone to cynicism and constantly seeing the negative in any situation. Despite all that, she still always strives to do what’s most beneficial and “morally right” for everyone, specifically because it is the right thing to do. When she and Kabal finally get together, most of their disputes come from her disapproving of his more callous behavior as a mercenary.

People of Hair Color: Everyone from the island of Andromede sports silvery-white hair, Coco included.

Secret Relationship: First with Aten, as he didn’t want her to tell anyone(specifically so it’d be easier to manipulate and abuse her). Then again with Kabal, though this was agreed upon by both of them, and only extends to those they work with, specifically to keep Kano from using that information against them.

Racial Remnant: Not “racial” per se, as the people of Andromede are made of many races, but it still partially fits. Coco is the daughter of refugees, and didn’t get to visit her homeland of Andromede until her mid-twenties. By the time she’s able to return, there’s only a small fraction of people left, with those left unable to really repopulate their ancestral homeland. It leaves her with a bittersweet feeling, after decades of dreaming about a place where she might finally belong.

Vengeance Feels Empty: Coco eventually helps Cash enact her vengeance on Aten, and keeps him from hurting any more people. It doesn’t make her feel better at all about what happened between them, and being an accessory and witness to his death genuinely distresses her.

When She Smiles: She doesn’t smile often, and when she does, she usually covers her mouth with her hand to hide it. Kabal really wishes she wouldn’t, as he’s seen her real smile before and it’s one of his favorite things.

Biography:

Callisto was born in the forests of Northern California to Orion and Celeste Nova. The couple were refugees from a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, hidden away by powerful magic. The island was called Andromede by its inhabitants, which were an offshoot of the cult that bred powerful warriors for the gods(the same cult that the Cage family’s ancestors were from). Instead of continuing the cult’s tradition of breeding and training powerful warriors for the Elder Gods, the small sect of the cult left said cult to worship a specific pantheon of deities, and were blessed by these gods, who gave them powers directly. The power was given through a direct ritual where the god was “drawn down” into the person’s body, briefly merging with their soul and imparting the power of their choice. Because of how dangerous this could be, this ritual was only done on those whose souls could withstand the merger, and therefore wasn’t done on anyone younger than the age of fifteen.

While Celeste was still pregnant with Corona, Callisto’s older sister, Shang Tsung and his forces assaulted the island, determined to take the Gods’ powers for his own. However, these powers did not extend to Shang Tsung as he took his first soul of Andromede’s people; in retaliation, he razed the island to the ground in anger. Celeste and Orion were one of a small handful who managed to escape, and they made their way to America after doing so.

Calli’s father Orion passed away before she was born, and her mother Celeste passed when she was only a few years old, therefore she didn’t get to know her family or learn about her culture firsthand the way her older sister did. She did end up learning through her sister, but because she didn’t grow up enamored in it, she wasn’t nearly as enamored with it as Corona was.

Cora and Calli spent a few years together at the orphanage, keeping away from the other children for the most part, since they were teased a lot for their naturally light hair and lack of knowledge of modern ways of life. However, when Corona was eleven and Calli was eight, a family decided to adopt the two. Coco could tell quite quickly this was not a beneficial arrangement, and managed to convince the family that Calli was not “worth” adopting, lying and saying that the girl was more trouble than she was worth. This deception broke Cora’s heart to do and absolutely devastated the soft-hearted Calli, but it worked; the family decided to adopt Corona alone, and the two were separated for the first time in their lives.

This incident left Calli with a lifelong worry that she was a burden, as well as severe anxiety. However, a quiet boy at the orphanage by the name of Sascha witnessed the event, and took Calli to the side, explaining why her older sibling had said such things. The two became close friends, with Sascha taking over the role of Callisto’s protector while Coco was away, as well as teaching her how to defend herself. Both managed to not draw the attention of potential adoptive families, with Calli holding out for her sister to return.

Years passed, and when Callisto was twelve, she was visited in the dead of night by Coco, who had been on the streets for the last few years after escaping from the adoptive family. The two tearfully made up and reunited, and along with Sascha, they left the orphanage for good, with the other two going to live with Corona. The trio lived a quiet life for many years, with Sascha and Coco working multiple jobs to keep food on the table to provide some sense of a normal life for Callisto, who attended school like any regular girl her age. During these years, Calli turned fifteen, and was able to perform the Drawing Down ritual of her culture at the correct time(Coco had been forced into it early), receiving powers from a Goddess of protection by the name of Ahksana.

Because of Corona’s guidance and hard work, Callisto was able to live comfortably while in her teens. She was a straight-A student(largely due to her eidetic memory), with a love for history and art specifically. She still trained with both Corona and Sascha(who by that point was considered part of the family to the girls), though even with Ahksana’s power she was not as physically powerful as either of them. When Calli was sixteen years old, Corona was reunited with her former adoptive sister, Izumi Tanaka, who’d just taken over her family’s corporation. Because of Izumi’s success at business endeavors, and the promise she and Coco made many years ago, Calli was able to get into any college of her choice, with Izumi paying in full for her education. She graduated high school a year early, and started her college education at the age of seventeen.

College was a much different beast than public school, and despite her previous straight-A status as a student, Calli struggled to keep up in college. Her major was historical studies, with her special interest being the history of the different realms. During this time, Calli also developed a love for archery, and Izumi designed a weapon for her: a collapsible bow, with many different types of arrows, including explosive ones. She also developed her an arrow that collapsed into a bracelet, and implanted a small magnet into Calli’s wrist(at her request), so that she’d never run out of ammunition. Callisto discovered that she had a gift for subterfuge, and would occasionally do freelance work getting dirt on other tech and weaponry companies for Izumi. This was all behind her older sister’s back and in between her studies, since she knew her older sister wouldn’t approve of her doing so(Coco wanted her to have a normal life, free of all the terrible things she had to do in order to get by). Sascha was aware of this, though, and often accompanied her on these missions, while keeping her secret from Cora.

Despite her educational struggles, she finished school with an undergraduate degree in history, with her thesis being a compendium on the history of the realms. She still utilizes the compendium she made to this day, adding new information to it as she learns more about the different realms and species that inhabit them. She wasn’t sure how to turn such an interest into a career, though, and so she spent her time after college out of work, living off the money Izumi and Coco gave her.

During Shinnok’s attempted takeover of Earthrealm, Netherrealm demons attacked her city, and she saved many lives through defending people against the demons and taking them out. Her dedication to helping innocent people did not go unnoticed, with Raiden and Fujin approaching her after to train her as an Earthrealm defender. She happily accepted, and began training at the Sky Temple and the Shaolin Temple. During this time, she became good friends with the likes of Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and the Kombat Kids, as well as developing feelings for her main mentor, Fujin. All of this was a secret to Coco, since Calli knew she would be furious at the Gods for it and likely attack them.

Personality: The main facet of Callisto’s personality and what she’s most known for is her sunny disposition, her unshakeable optimism, and her near-constant smile. Calli is a very happy-go-lucky individual, always seeing the bright side of any situation, and always has a kind comment for anyone who may need it, though she is at times a bit socially awkward. Because of her older sister’s struggles in life, Calli was spared a lot of horror, and she’s eternally thankful for that. However, Callisto also struggles a lot with severe anxiety, and feeling like a burden to her loved ones for not being as strong and physically capable as them. Unlike her sister, who is unable to hide her feelings, and wears them on her sleeve, Calli is great at hiding these parts of her, with only the people closest to her being able to tell if anything is wrong. She uses this ability to mask her feelings as part of her subterfuge efforts, as she’s very adept at disarming people with her kind personality and allowing them to open up to her. As well, she’s a bit of a troublemaker, loving to prank her friends and loving ridiculous internet memes. She’s also a huge fan of the Ninja Mime series, and has a bit of a starstruck moment when she finally gets to meet Johnny Cage in person.

Tropes:

Badass Bookworm: Though Calli isn’t as physically strong as her friends and loved ones, she’s very adept with both her god powers and a bow and arrow combo. She’s also quite well-read with a penchant for history and studying her opponents beforehand if she’s able.

Barrier Warrior: Her power gift was from a Goddess of protection, and manifests as barrier powers. She can use them to deflect blows, protect people around her, can use them around her own fists and feet to enhance her hand-to-hand combat, and can make steps out of them to gain a vantage point to snipe from with her archery skills. As well, she can also change the hardness of the barriers, also using them to fall from great heights without damage by turning them into a bouncy consistency like a trampoline.

Beneath the Mask: Much like her older sister, she puts on a front to prevent people from seeing her true feelings. Unlike Coco, however, she is much better at actually hiding her feelings. Also, unlike Coco, who hides her softer side with a brash outer shell, Calli hides severe anxiety and self-worth issues behind a constant smile.

Chronic Hero Syndrome: Calli is the type to help anyone who needs it, no matter how terrible a person they are. She truly believes everyone has some level of good in them, and tries her hardest to bring that out in people. It often manifests in her helping people who go on to cause her more problems down the line.

Cute Clumsy Girl: Whereas her older sister is a natural dancer and moves gracefully, Calli is very naturally clumsy, constantly tripping on and bumping into things. Constantly has bruises on her shins and knees because of it.

Endearingly Dorky: Callisto is a shut-in bookworm who still actively works on her college thesis despite having graduated already, who draws primarily fandom related things(specifically for Ninja Mime). That being said, her happy and perky personality earns her many friends.

Foil: For Corona. The two are completely different, personality-wise: Coco being a cynic who shuts herself off from strangers but secretly wants to help people and have their affection, and Calli being an optimistic ray of sunshine whose secret depths reveal a near-constant buzz of anxiety and paralyzing fear that she’s not good enough. The two are very close and bring out both the best and worst in each other in different ways.

Height Angst: Callisto stands at five feet even and absolutely hates it. She is the butt of teasing from many of her friends because of it.

Humble Hero: She does not see herself as any better or worse than the people she protects, and simply does what she does because it is the right thing to do. Is very shy and uncomfortable when getting praise for her heroic deeds.

Improvised Platform: Uses her barrier ability for this whenever needed. Her go-to attack is to use her barriers to make steps for her to run up, to gain vantage for her archery attacks.

Martial Pacifist: Though she’s a capable fighter, she doesn’t like to fight if she doesn’t have to, and if her enemy is capable of reason, she will always try that option first.

Nerd Glasses: Cannot see at all without her glasses. Primarily wears thick-rimmed black glasses in either a large square or a large circular design.

Nervous Wreck: Is this on the inside. She hides it really well, but it still creeps out occasionally. The first time she met Takeda Takahashi at a get-together at the Briggs Family Farm, her panicked, anxiety-ridden thoughts were so loud that Takeda could hear them over everyone else’s, without even trying to.

Nice Girl: Is genuinely kind and polite to others at all times(unless she’s playing a fun prank on them), as opposed to her friends like Izumi(who is usually kind to earn favors from others) or her own sister(who is kind under her very grumpy exterior only).

Older Than They Look: Is in her mid twenties, but because of her tiny height and build, is often mistaken for a teenager.

People of Hair Color: Much like her sister, her parents, and everyone else from the island of Andromede, she sports naturally silvery-white hair.

Photographic Memory: Possesses eidetic memory, which she uses to work on her compendium on the different realms, and uses in her battles against people she was able to study beforehand. She rarely needs to write down details ahead of putting them in her compendium, since she can recall them exactly.

The Pollyanna: Has watched her loved ones go through undue, terrible suffering, has seen some of the worst that humanity and otherwise has to offer, and still always keeps a positive and sunny outlook on life, no matter how dire the circumstances.

Think Happy Thoughts: When Calli is going through difficult times, or when her darker thoughts start to get the best of her, you can sometimes hear her muttering mantras of happiness under her breath to lift her mood.

The Straight and Arrow Path: Among her friends who use magic powers, rocket-powered hammers, guns and knives, her weapon of choice is a simple collapsible bow. She’s an expert marksman with it.

Trick Arrow: Thanks to Izumi, she has a plethora of these, including but not limited to: explosive bomb arrows, cluster shot arrows, elemental arrows, and smokescreen arrows.

Socially Awkward Hero: Has fought off Netherrealm demons, multitudes of different Outworld species, all for the safety of Earthrealm. Is still terrified of meeting new people and tends to ramble when nervous, which is almost always.

Stepford Smiler: Of the depressed variety. Behind her constant smile and sunshine-y persona, she is riddled with fear and anxiety that she has or will let her loved ones down in some way.

-his lore as a deity is that he resides in the Andromede society’s version of the Underworld, not as the operator of it(that’s a different deity), but a denizen. he was once a god of a different aspect, but he fell in love with a human woman and brought her to live with him after she returned his affections, but the trickster god of their pantheon, named Lindosen, tricked and killed her, jealous of her affection toward Zatounin, since he coveted her. after finding this out, he became the god of vengeance, and Lindosen became his sworn rival.

-the process that Coco’s people go through to draw the gods into their form is extremely taxing and painful, and takes training to do properly merge and de-merge, hence why they don’t typically allow the merging to happen before the age of 15. Coco unwittingly merging with Zatounin at the age of 11 with no preparation caused his essence as a god to become essentially “trapped” inside her soul, merging him with it, and causes her immense pain. she barely remembers the actual pain of the initial merger, as she was already close to death and floating in and out of consciousness, but she has dealt with it every day since. she hides it well, but it feels like a constant and intense burning or ripping sensation inside of her. she’s very good at hiding the pain, as it’s a constant in her life at this point, but it’s always there.

-she was floating in and out of consciousness when he came to her initially, and he had to work hard to pull her from the brink of death. he called to her, over and over in her mind, and in her mind she saw a large hand, coated in darkness, reaching out to her. he begged her to take his hand, promising his protection. she reached out, and as their hands touched, the darkness began to wrap around her hand, until it covered her entirely. that and a flash of immense pain was the last thing she remembered before she passed out completely, and Zatounin took full control of her body to protect her and kill her abusers.

-his magic appears as a sort of black and purple smoke-like energy, although it moves oddly like ink in a water suspension, almost haphazard and appearing to “bloom”, with small tendrils curling away from it. Coco can use this magic to grab people, like an extension of a hand, and she can also envelope people in it, draining their life force. the purple parts of it glow.

-Zatounin himself has his own design, though i’m still working on it(and need to get a commission at some point but FUCK IM BROKE LMAO). he is almost humanoid in appearance, but much larger, with a broad chest, a head, two arms, and two legs. however, his skin tone appears to be ink-black, with a reflective purple sheen in the light. he also has giant bat-like wings, smaller wings where his ears would be, horns that curve straight up, sharp teeth, and claws. as well, his movement is very inhuman: when not using his wings to fly, he moves in an almost animalistic way, on all fours, in a very jittery and unnatural manner. his eyes aren’t black either, like Coco’s become when she uses his magic, but instead it’s the same bright, glowing purple that exists in his magic.

-Coco can fully allow him to take over her body in emergency situations, but it’s very taxing and painful, plus it takes a while to fully recover from, so she only ever uses it as a last resort. she tends to use a form that i’ve been calling her Possessed Form for lack of a better term yet, where she partially allows him to take over. (here’s a picrew i made of it!) it’s quite an interesting transformation to watch from start to finish: first her eyes will change color, becoming fully black as though she’s wearing large sclera lenses. then, her hands will grow claws and become covered in the same blackness as they were the first time she and Zatounin merged, with wisps and blooms of blackness traveling up her arm, though not all the way. she also grows his fangs, horns, and both sets of wings(the ear wings give help her hearing exponentially as well!). in this form, she can use a lot of his powers, including increased strength and speed, extra control over how his magic moves and works, and the use of portals of darkness that she can transport herself and others through, though the range these portals have is limited to small distances.

-Coco is able to use his magic without transforming fully or partially, but this has taken much practice and effort on her part. if she doesn’t want to fight someone but she does want to intimidate them, she’ll typically stay in human form(or very partially transform ie eyes teeth and claws with nothing else changing) and threaten them with the magic.

-because of the merger, Zatounin is always with her. she talks to him a lot in her head, or occasionally out loud. if he wants to make himself known to others, he will show himself as a black wisp of smokey/inky magic with only his eyes visible otherwise. he can communicate with others without taking over Coco’s body, although that is because of a lot of practice of mastery over the ability to do so on Coco’s part.

-very rarely, if Zatounin thinks its necessary, or if his ire as a deity of vengeance has been activated, he will take over Coco’s body himself to either protect her or enact his own revenge. He tries to not do this, as he respects Coco’s autonomy as much as he can, but it does slip out. Coco’s managed to stop him exactly once during these kinds of moments.

-despite his terrifying appearance, immense power, and obsession with revenge as the deity of such, Zatounin himself is a very reasonable being. he is very protective of his human charge, helping her often with words of advice and reassurance in hard moments. many people with no understanding of the people of Andromede’s pantheon assume he’s a demon who’s possessed Coco’s body, and worked out some kind of deal with her. She usually doesn’t correct these false assumptions, unless it’s someone she knows and respects.

-Coco’s fiance-turned-sworn-enemy, Aten Vela, was given his powers by Lindosen, the trickster god who kills Zatounin’s human lover. He keeps this information from her while they are engaged, knowing Zatounin would never allow his manipulation of her if he knew the truth.

-in YYH verse, Coco is in fact a hybrid demon/human, and Zatounin is her ancestor and took over her body during a similar moment as he did in MKverse(the backstory is mostly the same with some slight changes, i’ll get into it eventually lmao). because of that, she awakened her demon energy much earlier than Yusuke did, but like Yusuke, she didn’t meet him(or any of her demon family) until the Three Kings arc. she starts the series much stronger than the main four boys, but doesn’t work with them until at least the Chapter Black arc, and by the time the Three Kings arc rolls around, they all begin to outrank her.
